My Watch Told Me I had Covid-19

My Watch Told Me I had Covid-19

    ...in a manner of speaking.

It started with this Apple Watch Heart Rate alert, which I had only ever seen while screaming at the TV from a barstool watching a Patriots game. But never that number—never that high. I was about to leave for work at my pub, but instead checked all my vital signs. I used the Heart Rate app to see my heart rate had climbed to 135, then 142, then 148. Sitting still.

    Yikes.

No other symptoms besides a vague bit of a headache and some lightheadedness. BP, Oxygen levels, temperature all normal, no shortness of breath or any pain at all, just a scary spike in HR. A fine local hospital is just 2 miles away so I headed to their ER where in minutes I was wired to an EKG machine, cleared triage, and in an ER bed on a heart monitor, oxygen sensor and automated BP cuff. Blood drawn, chest X-Ray, urinalysis, a line and IV fluids going in, Covid PCR swab done.

Heart rate hit 152 lying in bed, then came down a bit but still scary high.15 minutes later my doctor comes back and. says "Your Covid test was positive." Two YEARS of winning at 'Covid Dodgeball' had come to an end.

The ONLY symptom I had was a rapid spike in heart rate—that's how my body responded to antibodies fighting a virus. My Watch detected it and alerted me. No head, nose or chest symptoms, nor any loss of smell/taste. Some anti-inflammatory meds, 2 liters of fluids and electrolytes to address dehydration (also a symptom apparently) later, and with a more normal pulse rate I walked my vaccinated/boosted self out the door, 3 hours after I walked in, in time to drive home and start my isolation time watching the Super Bowl. I spent the past 7 days in isolation, then got 2 successive negative antibody tests, so the health department says I am in the clear again.

I'm a lucky guy, and CHEER the folks at Apple who put sophisticated active and passive health monitors and alerts inside a thing I wear on my wrist almost every waking second. I also CHEER all at Moderna and Pfizer who allowed me to walk away from the ER rather than be admitted.

    GPS from Apple Watch

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:50 AM PST

Hello, I used to run with my watch only leaving the iPhone at home and the gps track obtained on the Exercise app was really perfect.

However, at the beginning of the month I became unwell following hypoglycemia and I decided to leave only with my watch and Iphone for more safety in case I feel bad again.

But the track is becoming worse and worse, the lines of the gps path no longer follow the roads and make totally approximate lines crossing rivers, gardens… Do you know how to use only the watch's gps, because the iphone seems to create interference with the watch and the tracks are terrible.

However, for cycling I don't have this problem.

    What to do?

Green exercise ring is acting weird

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 10:45 AM PST

I have a Apple Watch 5, it's a year old. Since I got it I've clocked in around 30 exercise minutes while at work. Suddenly I now have 60 minutes before lunch, and my step count has not gone up. Could there be something wrong with my watch? Has anyone else had the same problem? Thanks.

    Alarm: vibrate before sound

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 10:31 AM PST

I've recently started wearing my Apple Watch again. I'm pretty sure there was a function in Sleep, or something similar, that would let you set the wake up alarm to vibrate on the watch first, then initiate the siren if you didn't respond. Is this a thing, and if so, how do I set this up?!

Apple Watch se Vs Charge 5

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:49 AM PST

The only reason I am considering charge 5 is because of its battery. I don't want a watch that I have to charge on daily basis. Questions:

    1. What am I gonna lose if I buy charge 5?

    2. Is there any better alternative?

PS : I own an iPhone

    Choosing wireless service

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 08:28 AM PST

I'm getting my kid an Apple Watch with GPS + cellular. My spouse and I currently have AT&T service. I understand I can add my kid's watch to my plan for $10/month + taxes/fees. That watch line is fine, but AT&T unlimited is expensive, so I'm thinking about switching.

I hear Visible is cheap for group plans. This thread in r/Visible says I can't use Family Setup though. Does that mean Visible won't work for me?

Which carrier do you use, and what are you paying for 2 phones and one watch (3 lines) w/unlimited everything?

    Edited to remove typo

Looking for an app to track calories & spending on Infograph complications

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:30 AM PST

I am looking for a tally counter app that can create complications for the Infograph watch face to track and see my calories and spending against a set goal(daily and monthly).

I am using Healthface presently but I can't create a separate tracking category for spending. Also the lack of a number pad is annoying.

Clicker only counts in multiples of 1 - I need a keypad.

    Any pointers?

Can't update (not enough space)/Can't manage space unless I update

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:42 AM PST

My phone (12mini) and watch (Series 3) are pretty insistent that I need to update, but the update requires 1.1gb and I don't have that space (I assume it's my music on the watch, although it could be Messages). However, I can't seem to manage the space on the phone app-all that's popping up is "update required". I also can't figure out how to manage space and delete apps/data from the watch itself. Am I missing something obvious here or am I stuck in a feedback loop and need to reset the watch?

    Configuring Sleep Schedule

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:23 AM PST

I know this has been asked in some form but couldn't find answer to this specific set of circumstances:

I want to have my Watch alarm go off each morning but Watch is kept on its charger. I do not want my iPhone alarm to go off, as it's kept in a different room.

Is there a way to utilize Sleep Schedule to where Watch alarm, on charger, will go off but iPhone alarm will be silent and/or disabled?

Is There A Way To Disable The Vibrate You Get For Every Mile You Complete?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:46 AM PST

    Hello,

So got an apple watch 7 recently, first day, I ran outside, and the speakers announced it every time I finished a mile. I was able to disable the speakers. Today I ran on the treadmill, and I get a vibrate on my watch for every mile I completed.

A bit annoying, is there anyway to disable the vibrate I get for every mile I run?

Watch 7 - Workout - Heart Rate Monitor

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:22 AM PST

I have a bit of an odd issue with the heart rate monitor on my Watch. The issue first started last October when I had Apple Watch 4. When on a running workout, the HRM started only recording intermittently with lots of gaps in the chart. It had worked flawlessly for the previous 2 years in all weather (hot and cold, wet and dry). I put it down to the age of the device as I'd seen these problems reported online.

Fast forward a few months and I now have an Apple Watch 7. I paired it with my iPhone and restored the data from my Watch 4. The first few runs were fine, with a nice solid HRM chart. However, for the past few weeks it's started to not record the first ten minutes or so of my run, then suddenly starts working without issue. Two runs I've done recently had no data at all and simply said 'Chart not available.

This is using the native Workout app. Last week I did a single run with the Nike Run Club app and it recorded my heart rate chart flawlessly. The very next run, on Apple Workout, same issue - nothing for the first ten minutes then a very patchy chart thereafter. Today I did a lunchtime run - no chart data available. Immediately prior to my run I did a manual heart rate check and it picked up my heart rate instantly so there's nothing wrong with the sensor. And given it has been doing this on two separate watches and (apparently) only doing it in one particular app, I now think the issue might be corrupt data when the 7 was restored from the 4.

I read that cold weather can affect it, but it's had the same issue when it's been 12C outside - which is hardly cold. However, the fact it usually kicks in ten minutes into a run may suggest this is the issue as the Watch would have warmed up by then from my body heat.

I've re-calibrated the fitness settings - no change.

I've adjusted the strap (Apple Sport Loop) - no change.

I've tried different straps - again no change.

If I do a full reset on the Watch and then re-pair it and set it up as a new Watch rather than restoring old data, does anyone know of:

    A) It'll lose any of my workout data for today (has already sync'd to the phone)

    B) When it's added as a new watch, will all the Move, Exercise and Stand counters reset to 0 or will they pick up existing data from Activity on the Phone?

    C) Does anyone know if this will actually solve the HRM issue?

I am loathe to wipe/reset if it messes everything up, such as custom settings, Apple Pay etc etc and still doesn't fix the issue.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has experience of similar and found a solution.
