Working at Apple - Question Thread Posted: 19 Feb 2022 03:00 AM PST r/Apple get's lots of posts in our queue asking questions about working at Apple, this thread is created to facilitate these questions. (Think of it as a Q&A) For context we get questions such as: what does an application process look like? how long does the application process take? It would be great if anyone who has experience with these aspects of applying and working at Apple are able to answer questions that people have! [link] [comments]

Anyone else getting really sick of of all the bugs with Siri? Posted: 20 Feb 2022 05:52 AM PST Anyone else getting really sick of Siri? It only seems to work around 50% of the time or less. It also quite limited in what it can do. And yeah I've already recalibrated my voice a few times. It doesnt seem like Apple has invested into fixing any bugs or enhancing it for years. I need to use voice commands a fair bit so I'm thinking of switching to a different brand for my next phone. [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Feb 2022 12:05 PM PST Here's the link to download: Download Kinetiform for iOS I've been involved with making procedural and generative art for a while now. Before I got into coding, I used to make abstract doodles - kind of like zen doodling, but a little more freeform. I knew that as I was making these doodles, I was following a set of internal rules: no straight lines, smooth curves, intersected lines end, shapes are filled with patterns, etc. I wanted to see if I could recreate these drawings through code. I first used processing to prototype the idea. The initial challenges were to draw interesting shapes autonomously while knowing when a line intersected with another line. With perlin noise and a bit of geometry I was able to quickly solve these first two problems, but then the big problem came: how do I know which what polygon has been created when a line collides with another. It seems simple at first, but the edge cases were plentiful and difficult. In the end I created a node graph that I could traverse and use some logic to determine when/if a new poly had been created. Once the poly was identified I just create a procedural texture and use the poly to mask. After some tweaking I felt i had something that represented a good aproximation of my personal doodling style. I made a post on the creative coding sub with some screenshots of this output: https://www.reddit.com/r/creativecoding/comments/9tmzx4/generative_illustrations_made_with_processing/ Some time after that I decided I wanted to port the entire thing to swift. There were many challenges involved - the biggest was probably finding out a way to use Metal and CoreGraphics at the same time. I wanted Metal so I could make a custom shader for effects, but I wanted CoreGraphics so I could use the existing drawing commands. I ended up being able to render CoreGraphics drawing commands into a buffer that was sent to a Metal shader as a uniform texture. From there I could apply any effects I wanted - lots of things from symmetry, kaleidoscope, distortion, and some animation. As I was implementing this on an iPad/iPhone, I added the ability to be able to actually draw the paths yourself instead of just having the algorithm do it. It makes for a fun doodling experience because your lines are automatically connected to other lines, and when your lines intersect another, a shape is created and it is automatically filled with a procedural pattern. You can even just start a line and then let the algorithm finish it for you. It's a bit like doodling with a little robot helper. I went pretty hard on the effects shader - it includes mirror, rotational, and hex symmetry - along with some interesting distortions and shading options. You can also create and save drawings, customize your color palette, and choose which patterns you want to use. This project represents a pretty big milestone personally - I made a moderately successful particle visualizer called Uzu a few years back and I never found the time to make a follow up project. Having a couple kids in the meantime didn't help with the time constraints - but after a few years of working in my spare time, I've completed something I'm pretty happy with. It's free to download, but I have one-time in-app-purchase to unlock all the features. Thanks to anyone who checks it out! [link] [comments]

Are Moments in Apple Photos/iCloud Photos/Iphone Photos gone forever? Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:14 PM PST Hello, I love taking pictures with my iPhone and having them on all my Apple products over the Cloud and synched etc, it's just great! What's even better is Moments that separates your pictures by day and sometimes within a day in "batches" which makes deleting, sorting, downloading batches of pictures super easy because you see all the pictures that go together. This disappeared from my iPhone a while ago. I was really disappointed but it still existed on iCloud so it was great to take pictures with the phone then delete-sort-download to my macbook through iCloud. Today I log in to iCloud. No more moments! Only all my pictures, one after the others, in a big cloud of squares with no structure to them. This is really upsetting and frustrating! Does anyone feel the same way? Or better knows how to get Moments back up and running? I can't see why Apple would get rid of such a good feature?! [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Feb 2022 07:16 PM PST Hello! Does anyone else think that Apple should include a new feature in which if you have the "Offload Apps" option enabled, you should be able to select which apps you don't want to be offloaded?? I always have to re download some apps I use eventually because this option is available and they are offloaded just when I need to use them and it reduces productivity! Hope they ever make this option available!!! Let's make it viral! [link] [comments]

Zipnote - Take Quick Notes (Promo Codes Available - More Info Below) Posted: 20 Feb 2022 01:24 PM PST Download Zipnote Today! https://apps.apple.com/app/id1603007695 About ZipnoteZipnote is an app that is designed to allow you to take quick notes without having an overly complicated user interface and features that you would never use. Zipnote is very simple to use; simply open the app and start typing! Zipnote is designed for those notes that you would need to take in a hurry that would normally end up on the back of your hand or in a text message to yourself. I personally would always be sending texts to myself to remind me of little unimportant things that I needed to remember. Things like, a friends order for a restaurant, or when taking measurements. It is a handy tool to write down what you need and quickly so. Once you are done with your note, you can simply delete it with a tap. Zipnote only uses one note for maximum simplicity and efficiency. It is not meant to be used like a traditional note app, where you store several different notes. While you may use it for whatever you would like, it works best for the short and simple notes that you need to take in a rush; and would only need to keep short term. You also have the ability to export your notes directly from the app. Zipnote also supports Dark Mode for the best viewing experience in low light. Zipnote is designed to be very clean and simplistic, so anyone can use it! It gives a premium feel without sacrificing simplicity or usability. You can use Zipnote for whatever kind of note you need; the possibilities are endless! Promo CodesPlease feel free to try Zipnote out by using one of the promo codes below! If you use one, please comment the number of the code you used, to help others get a chance to try as well. I will try to keep this list updated, and will strikeout the codes that have already been redeemed. Thank you for your support!

Posted: 19 Feb 2022 10:33 AM PST Yesterday had my airpod pro fall out of my ear and it went into the road and was crushed by a bus. Today I went to apple store and after talking to technician it was explained because I didn't have the damaged airpod pro it would count as lost, $90, bill rather than damaged, a $30 bill. So make sure you get those crushed remains of your airpod to avoid that $90 lost fee. Also, yes I had apple care. [link] [comments]
Sharing my experience using iPad then Mac as my main device Posted: 19 Feb 2022 05:51 PM PST I think Apple's marketing of the iPad, "Your next laptop is not a laptop" has been interesting. There is a minor group of people who use their iPad as main device or even as their sole "computer". It looks weird for the uninitiated, so let me share my experience using iPad Air 4 as my main "computer" for 5 months then the MBA M1 for the next 5 months. I was a long time Windows user. Entering into graduate studies, I was convinced of getting an iPad. When I was an undergraduate student, I used a borrowed iPad so I'm familiar with it. But that was 6~7 years ago, so many features have changed. Less than a year ago, I bought an iPad to supplement the use of my old Windows laptop. I was thinking, I will use the iPad for notetaking, reading journal articles, annotations, basically graduate studies stuff. But then, when I started using the iPad, I was blown away as to how powerful it was. It was very snappy and every time I returned to my old Windows machine, I hated it. That thing was super slow. So I transitioned into using my iPad as my main device. I found it was more or less sufficient to my use case. I use Notes and Goodnotes for notetaking, Safari for browsing and the Mail app. No problem on that part. It felt like I was really using a computer for those apps. Media consumption is also great. But every now and then, I encounter some limitations with the iPad. All of which are software-related and not hardware, I believe. Zoom is fine if you're only attending a meeting. Audio is great, as well as the camera. But it boggles my mind that you cannot access the sent files in chat through the iPad (and iPhone as well). But if you are presenting, Zoom is terrible. You cannot share your camera feed while sharing screen. There's a workaround by using the Zoom sharing file option. But it is not a good experience. And sometimes you really need to share the screen rather than a file. Excel is insufficient. For basic formulas, there's no trouble. But it is still more of a mobile app. You can use Excel online 365, which has the advanced features, but not everyone has the access for that. I use Keynote for presentation and it is great for a touch screen. (Keynote >>> Powerpoint) But sometimes you will encounter some lack of feature, which is only available in Mac. Sorry, I cannot give an example. I already forgot. I still access a Windows machine in the university via TeamViewer. It feels weird for the iPad because of the weirdness of using mouse. As Jonathan Horst pointed out in Mac address, the mouse in the iPad is blunt because it simulates a finger. That, and some limitation in the keyboard shortcuts. As a segue, it's also the reason why I now think the Mac does not have to be a touch screen. And finally, the lack of external monitor support. I think this one is a deal breaker. Multitasking in iPadOS is more or less tolerable. Not great, but tolerable. But it is hindered by the lack of external monitor support. Some apps utilize it like Netflix. But it isn't common. I found a workaround when using Goodnotes. I can open it in the side or slideover then share its screen so the iPad will show a small window of Goodnotes with your other apps then the external monitor show the full page of the shared Goodnotes file. So after 5 months of trying iPadOS and hearing all the great things with the M1, I bought the MBA. It was a very different experience. At first I was overwhelmed. The iPadOS simplified many things which is great for non-power users. For Mac, you have all the customizations available. But eventually I got used to the Mac. I am amazed to the level of customization of Mac. It felt un-Apple like. We all know the iPhone has less customization than Android, but we have peace with that because of its simplicity and stability. Same with iPad. But for the Mac, it's different. But to be fair, the customization I'm talking about are third-party apps like BetterTouchTool, Karabiner, Aerial, etc. So now, I use the Mac as my main machine, and the iPad for media consumption, sidecar, and supplementary computer. It seems to me that Apple is hindering the external monitor support of the iPad because they are threatened that it will cannibalize the sale of Macs. I don't think so. While they have some overlaps, they are fundamentally different devices. iPad is simpler and is great for touch screen/pencil stuff. Mac is geared more for the power user. So it is possible to use the iPad as the only computer, but be ready for some limitations. Tl;dr Used iPad as main device for 5 months. Great for simple stuff. Has deal-breaking limitations. Bought an MBA. Works great together. [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Feb 2022 12:51 AM PST I know they tried with Ping back around 2010, but given the massive base and putting a strong emphasis on user privacy, and recent backlash to Meta FB and Instagram, I think they could be at a strong advantage here. Probably won't happen, but it's a nice pipe dream and could be good counter programming to what we currently have now. [link] [comments] |
