Apple Watch Activity Challenge algorithm is unrealistic.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 11:53 PM PST

Apple needs to change the algorithm that calculates each monthly challenge as it is becoming a demotivator.

One month it can be very achievable, and if you exceed that challenge, the next month will not just increase in a small increment, it will jump to something that is almost unachievable.

In January this year, I had to double my move goal 3 times. I did this, and as it was dry January, did exercise every day, accumulating 60 miles of walking. The February challenge turned up, and it was to walk 103 miles, not just a simple increment, almost doubling. I'm not even going to bother going for it.

Last year was the same, January fairly achievable, February was to close all three rings every day, and March was so unachievable that I gave up with the intention of resetting the challenges to something realistic. This took until December, and looking back at the last year, my activity dropped off considerably during the year until December, just to get a challenge to something realistic.

    AirPods tracking story

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 07:10 PM PST

So my kid always has his AirPods on him 24-7 and has been pretty responsible with them. He stayed at his friends this weekend and they own a landscaping company. They asked him to go shovel some driveways to earn some cash. They did about 4-5 houses before he realized his music wasn't playing in one ear. We picked him up from his friends house and he tells me he lost one of his AirPods. I literally just got him the 3rd gens for Christmas too. I figure maybe we can track it with the find my app. Lo and behold, it showed the last location!!

We drive to the persons house and ask them if we can search around for it. They said it's cool and even loaned us a shovel. After about 5 minutes of walking around the property, the app says that we're connected and getting closer. We played the sound and it was so faint but we could follow it. My kid is digging through the snow with his hands and realizes there's a bucket on the neighbors property where they were shoveling the snow towards earlier. He said I think it's in the bucket. We grab it dump it and spread the snow around and we found it! I never thought we would find his white AirPod in 2 feet of snow. Thank you apple for adding that awesome feature!

Apple Probably Won’t Buy Peloton Despite Investor Push

Rant about MacBook Air and Apple Service Centres.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 11:52 PM PST

I bought an M1 MacBook Air in July 2021. I love the device! It is my first Apple Product and it just works flawlessly except... 2 really bad issues.

    1. The base is uneven. The laptop would wobble when kept on flat surfaces, nothing I could do to fix that. This didn't happen with a friend's M1 MacBook Pro 2020 on the same flat surfaces, so I knew it is an issue with my MacBook Air only.
    2. The right speakers produces a crackling noise when playing music at high volumes. It happens at certain frequencies, mainly piano music.

So I went to an Apple Authorised Service Centre in August 2021. Showed them the issues and they just say "The wobbly base is because of uneven table, not the laptop" even though I literally proved that issue with another of their device on the SAME table! What's worse is they refused to tell me there's an issue with the speaker even if I showed them. After some arguing, they took in the device and replaced the speakers and sent it back.

The issue remained. I was beyond pissed since I had to travel 20km just to reach the Apple Service Centre! I went back in in September again and told them the issue remains. They again argued with me and told me they would not repair the bottom case because of the serial ID. They took it in again and replaced speakers but to no avail!

Fast forward to now, I figured out the issue is with the keyboard according to other Apple Forums with the same issue on their laptop. So I went in again, but a different Service Centre and they took my laptop in immediately. They replaced the top case and gave it back but alas, the issue still remained.

The issue is that certain keys on the right side (right shift, return, delete, \) start vibrating producing the crackling noise. It could be fixed by putting my hand over the keys.

So I asked them and showed them that the issue still remains and they bring another laptop to check. EVEN THAT LAPTOP HAS THE SAME EXACT ISSUE but at a different frequency. I was pissed at the Apple Design to mess up this bad. What's worse is that the Apple Service guy told me that "Your laptop only has 2 months warranty left" - false, it still has 6 months remaining. "We had a take a huge exception because of warranty shortage and was not easy to repair your device. Since we went through so much trouble, please give us good reviews". I asked him that he did not repair my issue, and he uses the same line again. "Warranty is only 2 months. It was very big exception."

At this point, I'm just done roaming around Apple Service Centres to fix this one issue. 3 repairs and it still remains. I paid $1000 for these issues? It's just baffling.

I have a call with a senior adviser at Apple scheduled in the evening. Hopefully, they can give a final resolution.

[RANT] Why do I need an external drive to backup my MacBook but I can backup my iPhone to iCloud without the need for an external drive?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 10:06 PM PST

Why can't I backup my Mac to iCloud but I can with my iPhone? My iPhone has 256GB storage and my MacBook has 256GB storage so there's no way my Mac's backup could take up more storage than my iPhone's and even if it did, I have 2 fucking TB of iCloud Drive storage so even if I had larger capacity MacBook I would probably still be fine. If the mods ban this post I will post it in /r/MildlyInfuriating because that sums up my predicament.

The rollout of ProMotion support has been frustratingly slow.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 02:54 PM PST

So ProMotion 120hz displays were a big selling point both of the iPhone 13 Pro series and the 14"/16" MacBook Pros. On the iPad Pro it has been fully supported and implemented perfectly for years.

It seems to be a little absurd that even now, on iOS 15.3, applications using Apple's own native frameworks are stuck at 60 hz for animations - especially considering all of Apple's first party apps run at 120 hz out of the box for all animations. There are even system animations, like reachability, that are stuck at 60 hz for no obvious reason at all.

Similarly, macOS is still working on implementing smooth 120 hz animations and scrolling, with every .x update getting better.. but still in a number of ways it remains janky. Official Safari support is still in beta.

The hardware capability is there, but about 4 months after hardware release, it is still not properly implemented or supported in software. And if we stick to iOS 14's timeframes we're not seeing 15.4, which enables 120hz in all applications, until April - more than 6 months after release.

Considering 15.3 seemed to be a bug fix release and did not include major new features, I really think that core animation should have been updated/fixed by this version. I hate to harp on the "3 trillion dollar company" line of thinking, but honestly, it seems like Apple should have the resources to match software support with hardware features each year. The integration of hardware and software is Apple's defining competitive advantage.

What do you think about this? Should we be holding Apple's feet to the fire a little more about them not supporting a headlining feature? Do you notice it in every day use? Or does it not bother you?

How is Music.app on macOS this buggy?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 04:06 PM PST

Specifically playlist management. Spotify has dragged their feet so long on needed improvements and lossless and are now trying to shove podcasts I don't want into the app with no option to turn them off, cluttering the app. I imported a playlist from Spotify to try out Apple Music for a month. This playlist is about 1600 songs. I turned on Lossless downloads and streaming in my preferences.

    • There are songs on the playlist that are missing album art, but if I go to the artist page while playing them, the art is there.
    • Sometimes it indicates it's playing the same version of the song as in the playlist, sometimes not
    • Sometimes when playing from the playlist, it doesn't pick the lossless version, but the AAC version. If I play it from the artists page, it plays the lossless version. WTF?
    • I hit delete/backspace to remove a song from the playlist and get an "are you sure" prompt, hit yes, and it doesn't remove it. If I right click and select remove from playlist, I get the same prompt and it DOES remove it. WTF?
    • Why are the heart icons so incredibly small?
    • Why can't you see a list of all liked/loved songs in Apple Music?
    • MiniPlayer doesn't show the title and artist of the currently playing track? Why?

It's not all bad, coming from Spotify, I'm blown away by the availability lossless audio just thrown in for free. On my desktop where I actually have good speakers, it makes a noticeable difference. Lyrics on Apple Music is probably the best implementation I've seen, letting you seek to parts of the song through the lyrics is awesome.

I wish this wasn't so friggin buggy though. The quality of Music.app on macOS 12.2 (not the beta) is just terrible. People crap all over Spotify for using an electron app on desktop, but at least that app works consistently and doesn't have glaring UI inconsistencies/behavior like Music.app. Come on Apple, you can do way better.

How much do you use Apple Cash?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 08:16 PM PST

Seems like Apple Cash was/is a good idea but it's kind of stagnated. I don't see a lot of people use it, and it doesn't seem as full featured as Zelle/Venmo/Cash App.

Do you see a lot of people using it? Any features missing that you'd like to see?
