- Monterey install stuck like this for almost two hours, how long should I let this sit? I'm updating from High Sierra and had to delete stuff to free up space for the update.

I always had "free" copies on Windows but after switching to Mac a year ago, I left the pirate life behind. But I'm coming up on the end of my $19.99/month student promo price and in general hate subscription software. For the same $240 I paid in the last year I could have bought a lifetime of the Apple Pro Apps Bundle for Education ($199.99, includes FCP and Motion) and Affinity Photo which often goes on sale for $38. Photoshop → Affinity Photo This seems like an easy transition despite being a 15+ year Photoshop user. I like how there's Raw editing for my photography side hustle and supports PSD. Premiere → Final Cut Pro I really like Premiere. I started on Sony Vegas for video editing and when I moved to Premiere 2 years ago, it clicked. I've messed around with Final Cut in an Apple Store and the workflow feels very different with the snapping timeline. I can't decide how I'd like it. I do a lot of effects and automation, my videos involve a lot of editing and layers and nested timelines. So the FCP timeline being less predictable seems like it could be really annoying. Is it? After Effects → Motion After Effects is something I haven't dove into much, but I've always wanted to learn it for visual effects. From what I've heard, Motion doesn't compare. Just not sure in what way. I'm mainly interested in motion tracking, 3D assets from Blender, VFX, things like that. Other software Lastly I used to be really into Macromedia Flash (now Adobe Animate) as a kid and was looking into it again. Character Animator, I haven't used, but the face tracking and lip syncing looks really cool. I was going to dive in both but might wait in case I switch. Any alternative for those? Also I do know there's the performance benefit, but honestly I don't care that much. I wouldn't be switching for that. Adobe suite, especially now that it's M1 native, is plenty fast in my opinion. I have had several instances where it seems like an app is using the microphone (specifically Telegram Desktop and Slack), even though I am not making calls. Sometimes it is even showing the indicator even though the app is not even running (checked in activity monitor as well). Anyone else with similar issues? [link] [comments] | ||
| Bluetooth Mouse - USB Dongle Range? Posted: 11 Dec 2021 02:21 AM PST I use a couple of bluetooth mice with my M1 MBA, in both cases connecting via the supplied USB-A dongle rather than directly. I've found that unless the dongle is no more than a few inches away from the mouse, the connection is stutterly. This means having to use an extension cable in addition to the USB-C hub. On Windows, the mouse seems to work just fine even when the dongle is much farther away (e.g. on the other side of the laptop). Has anyone noticed this or have any suggestion on how I could improve the connection? I would of course connect directly to the Mac via Bluetooth if that option was available. [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 10 Dec 2021 04:36 PM PST I swear I used to summon spotlight (command-space), start typing something (e.g. 6*4), see my answer (e.g. 24), then hit "escape" to make the whole thing disappear and go back to what I was doing. Now, the escape key seems to do nothing and I can't figure out how to dismiss the spotlight search box (and suggested results). Please help! EDIT: I figured it out: just hit command-space again. Apparently they changed it or at least removed the escape key's functionality. | Monterey Battery Drain Intel Mac Posted: 10 Dec 2021 06:07 PM PST I moved from Catalina to Monterey. I tired Big Sur before but it killed my macbook. It's an 2017 intel mac with a new battery. I did a clean install. It just seems like Monterey uses almost twice as much battery than Catalina did. Maybe I should go back? Has anyone ever done a battery comparison test between these two operating systems? I feel like the issue with the battery is so important that even if everything else works just fine, I should downgrade. What do yall think? [link] [comments] | ||

| installing iPadOS apps on M1 iMac - Some aren't there, some I need to repurchase? is this a bug? Posted: 10 Dec 2021 06:31 PM PST I've just switched to an M1 iMac and discovered than on the App Store there is a tab to search for iPadOS versions of apps! However, some of the apps that I have on my iPad are not even available under the "iPhone & iPad apps" tab as if they don't exist (eg. Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Procreate, Affinity Designer, Nomad Sculpt). And then, there are a few that I have purchased on my iPad (using the same appleID) and while they appear under "iPhone & iPad apps" tab, I need to repurchase them (eg. Sculptura 3D)! Some other apps (games mostly) that I have paid on my iPad report properly as purchased and I download them straight away. To clarify, I'm speaking for the iOS versions of the apps, not the Mac App Store ones. Is this normal? Why the inconsistence? is this some bug or is this some option that the developers have to either completely prevent a desktop computer from installing their app, or forcing the user to repurchase (very strange)? I locked it and went to sleep, woke up the next did not think about it, and realized a couple of weeks later that I forgot to write down the new password I had created. I have been trying every combination for months but I cannot find the answer. I took the decision to erase the drive so I can at least use it for other files. I am looking for the following answers.
