| How I setup and manage my Mac with Ansible Posted: 27 Dec 2021 07:42 PM PST Hi all, I wanted to share my Ansible playbooks for bootstrapping macOS and managing my dotfiles. Here's the repo: https://github.com/bradleyfrank/ansible The resulting desktop/terminal: https://i.imgur.com/Affyxgz.png I try to stay up-to-date with the latest Ansible practices, and I try to stay consistent with my own style choices. But, I'm always looking to improve the playbooks in ways that are efficient, clear, and straight-forward. The bootstrap playbook, as detailed in the README, assumes no prior knowledge of the local workstation, so it's geared towards running locally and not remotely. I use Homebrew to manage all my packages and apps. It may not be as robust as a Linux package manager but it's made the terminal experience in Mac bearable for me. I love the OS and the ecosystem very much, but the command line tools leave a lot to be desired. I will say that it can sometimes be annoying to chase down OS configs that change from release to release, as I apply a long list at bootstrap. | Posted: 28 Dec 2021 07:16 AM PST Well, I use my macbook on two modes, docked in to a desk setup with mouse and standalone with its trackpad. Its baffling that apple doesnt give us seperate options for mouse and trackpad. I simply want to be able to toggle the natural scrolling via a shortcut, or a bash script, which can be run as a shortcut again. I did check out the defaults interface but it seems theres nothing about the natural scroll setting in the defaults interface. Is there a way to access this setting via bash or as a shortcut? Btw, no, I dont care for app solutions. This is a simple setting which I should have control over without the need of third party apps, I'd rather go into settings and manually toggle it like a barbarian than install a third party app for something this trivial. Couldn't find anything on Google either. I am using a Razer headset, that I now connected with my old Logitech G430 USB adapter, since the Mac mini's jack is apparently only audio out. | Can´t access Recovery OS - my Macbook is completely useless right now, help please :/ Posted: 28 Dec 2021 05:07 AM PST Hi there, I was facing an issue with my touch id - it wouldn´t work. I tried restarting computer, reseting smc, even reinstalling mac os. Yet, when I tried to add new touch id, it failed every time and I couldnt even scan my finger. So I did little bit of google search and I found command xartutil --erase-all. I entered this command in the terminal in Recovery OS (knowing that my data will be gone and I will have to reinstall Mac Os). The problem is, I can´t access Recovery OS at all. I can´t boot to bootable USB I have created, or reinstall Mac OS using Apple´s reinstallation toolkit. When I hold power/touch id button, it just keeps on restarting and restarting and nothing else ... I´m kinda desperete, is there a way to solve this? Thanks a lot! | Posted: 28 Dec 2021 04:05 AM PST Hi Guys. I'd like to know if there is a way to set up a PPTP VPN in Mac OS Monterey. I know that the option from the VPN menu in the settings has been already removed. But some users claim that were able to set up the connection anyway using the pppd Plugin found the Mac OS system until Catalina. The folder PPP still exist in the computer. If I try to launch the pppd command it respond that does not exist. If I type sudo pppd it starts responding with strange characters on the terminal windows (probably is a bug) Can you guys confirm me that the PPTP plugin was removed after Catalina? However this app has not been updated for like 3 years and thus it's not native for ARM (now I got an M1 Pro MacBook Pro). I know it's not a big deal to run it in Rosetta (especially something like a JSON editor), but I would rather use an app that's been actively developed (this app was last updated when macOS Mojave was released). I would like to take over everything from my current MacBook Pro running Mojave over to the new laptop running Monterey. Can I just create a Time Machine backup and then use the Migration assistent to setup the new one? Or what would be the best and hassle-free way to switch to the new machine. Safari keeps crashing / loading websites forever. The problem occurs in Chrome, too. Only once I disconnect my Dell Docking Station and therefore the external monitor, all goes back to normal.
