PSA/Warning same day shipping Apple Online Store

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 05:28 PM PST

I needed an iPhone urgently for someone in my office on Thursday when the carrier didn't fulfil an order and bit the bullet and ordered directly from Apple. On checkout there was a lovely offer to send it same day for $13.99 which seemed like a no brainer. I completed the order and went about my day. The next morning I realized I never received it. Checked the reception logs and see nothing. I check my profile and see a note that Apple says it's delivered. I check around again and nothing. I go back to the site and try and track it and am given an Uber Eats splash page that says "Order Cancelled". Ok I figure he arrived after hours and returned the phone. Check my credit card to see a full charge. Decided to call Apple to be told they see it as delivered and to contact Uber or my credit card company. Uber of course is a non starter as the delivery isn't in my account and they have no way to even pull up the order (apple says they can't see any of the delivery info on their side). Only choice now appears to be to issue a charge back. Kinda messed up. I guess the PSA is if your Uber Eats iPhone goes missing, you're seemingly on your own. Apple is going to "monitor" to see if the retail store reports it was returned. Nice. Will see if Amex can get their attention.

    Macbook M1 is a MONSTER!!!

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 10:10 AM PST

So after upgrading my machines to Windows 11 and finding that I hate the new explorer and settings, I decided to consider the Macbook M1. I have a top of the line Thinkpad Yoga that's about 1 1/2 years old and I upgraded that to Windows 11 as well. The Thinkpad only gets at most 2.5 hours on the battery so every time I am traveling or out at client offices I am constantly searching for a power plug. I was in Costco and was looking at the Macbook Pro M1 and my wife kept pushing me to try it. I can return it if I don't like it so what's the risk. I purchased it and man I am glad I did. The M1 is a monster. It tears through every task and program at record speed with no heat and barely any battery use. I was at the hospital working on the M1 all day while my wife was having surgery and I used it hardcore for about 5 hours and the battery was only down to about 84%. My Thinkpad would have needed a nuclear power plant to run for that long.

I have purchased Macbooks in the past only to return them because I didn't like the hardware or software. They never really impressed me. The M1 is a completely different animal. The hardware is well built, the software is solid as hell and everything just works so well together. I have an Iphone and can send/receive texts, make calls, contacts, etc. Everything is just so nicely integrated I can just get work done. With the Windows machines it's always CRASH, DRIVER PROBLEM HERE, PROGRAM DOESN'T WORK THIS TIME, CRASH AGAIN, FREEZE, CRASH, FREEZE, ETC. I could never get work consistently done on any Windows machine for years. Even on my top of the line Ryzen 7 that has a top of the line ASUS Motherboard and two AMD RX580 GPU's, it's still not completely stable. It doesn't matter how much hardware you throw at it or what you do - Windows will always crash and cause issues. One of my hobbies is producing music and I use Ableton and the system always maxes the CPU and glitches the software and does all kinds of crazy crap that ultimately stops me from working nonstop.

Furthermore, even if you don't have stability issues, the integration of trying to use MICROSOFT PHONE between the laptop and IPhone is sub-par at best. Nothing integrates well and that ultimately causes loss of time. Yes, I am a technical person but I also need to get work done and pay bills so screwing around with OS's and software isn't a luxury I have when running my company. I just need something that works and is super stable.

Yes, I have tried Linux and Linux is incredibly stable and I love it but Linux doesn't have native Microsoft Office support or an alternative to Outlook (Yes, I have tried them all including Evolution). Linux is just missing too many commercial software programs including MS Office, Ableton, Etc. I have tried the Linux alternatives and they always fall short or I just don't have the time to reinvent my entire workflow after 20 years of use. Maybe when more commercial software comes to the Linux side, that will be the way to go but it's not there yet.

Anyway, after using the M1 Mac for about 2 months, I freakin love it. It's literally the best laptop/computer I have ever used. I was having my Ryzen desktop run all three of my monitors but I have since replaced the 3 monitor home setup with my M1. The M1 is so powerful it has no problems running multiple monitors without delay. Try that on my Thinkpad and you will see performance loss immediately. Trust me, if you are thinking about getting an M1, get it. It's a monster.

The M1 burns through everything you throw at it and memory management is just ridiculous. I can have a Windows VM running, all my regular software, Outlook, etc and the memory never gets overloaded or maxed out. I only have 8 GB memory and I have yet to hit a wall. And believe me I have tried. If you hit the memory limit which is very difficult, the SSD caching is so fast you don't even notice.

Mac OS is much better now and they really cleaned it up and made is so much better. It does take some time to get used to it coming from Windows but if you stick with it, you will get it. Expect a couple months to get really proficient and used to it. I struggled for a couple months with the key shortcuts etc but now it feels normal. Stay with it and you will get it and it will be worth it.

The only system crash I have ever had was the Brave browser getting hung up on a music video one time. Besides that, I haven't had any crashes or problems. The underlying linux/BSD is just so dam stable. One program can crap out and the OS just keeps going. You will never see a blue screen or driver issue bringing the machine down. It just doesn't happen.

This has to be the biggest leap in technology in a long time. The M1/ARM platform is amazing and Apple actually pulled it off when Microsoft tried so many times and failed. Trust me, if you haven't tried the M1 yet, you are missing out.

Anyone else disappointed in the iPhone 13 Pro telephoto (3x) lens?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 08:47 AM PST

First of all, portrait mode is harder to use in a few ways. The 3x zoom factor zooms in closer to the subject, but the camera itself cannot focus on closer objects, so it keeps telling you to move backwards. The net result is you get the same framing (or even wider framing) as the older 2x and 2.5x of the 11/12 pros, instead of a closer framing that you would expect from a 3x zoom factor.

This is especially annoying for things like food photography or taking a photo of someone across the table. Now you need to do a severe lean back or get out of your seat to take the photo.

Also the slower aperture results in significantly more blurry images, especially for indoor photos like in a restaurant or home at night (even with bright lights turned on).

Another issue is that when taking photos with the normal camera, the phone will often use a digital crop of the 1x camera instead of the 3x (decided based on lighting conditions). When this was 2x, this was less noticeable. Now that the button is 3x, it's very noticeable when it's a digital crop because of how unsharp/noisy it looks. Obviously you can still pinch or slide the 1x to get to a different zoom level, but tapping the 2x or 3x button is much easier, especially if you want to capture something fast.

The last thing I noticed is that there is sometimes a big shift when the phone changes between the 1x and 3x lenses. Half the image will shift to a different position. A similar thing happens with the macro mode, but that's been talked about a lot already.

It's unfortunate, because the 1x lens and ultra wide are really great now and have kept improving. The 3x feels like a big step backward.

    Easy Lossless Audio Update

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 02:45 PM PST

If you want to update your music to the lossless format like I did you might have struggled to do so without one by one going through each song removing and re-downloading them. If you have a large library like I do that would be torturous. Here's the easy work around:

    1) Go into the music app. Select either all of your songs or, alternatively, just the ones you want downloaded to your device. Add them to a new playlist. If you have already enabled lossless audio skip to step "3." If you have not continue to step "2."

    2) Go into Settings -> Music -> Audio Quality. Turn on "Lossless Audio." Ensure where it says "Downloads" you have selected "Lossless" as well.

    3) Go into Settings -> Music -> Downloaded Music. Select "Edit." When the red minus icon pops up next to "All Songs" select that. This will remove all downloaded songs on the device.

    4) Go back to the music app. Select the playlist you made. Select the down arrow icon or, alternatively, select the three dots and then select "Download."

That's it. Depending on the amount of songs you wish to download this may take some time, even over a high speed connection. You do not need to stay within the music app; the songs will download in the background.

The same process can be done on any current, updated device. This method can also be used to downgrade back to "High Quality" or up to "Hi-Res Lossless." Note that "Hi-Res Lossless" consumes an enormous amount of storage.

    Hope this helps!

Could Apple update Camera software for all the iPhones ?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 06:38 PM PST

Hi guys, Just a discussion I had with a friend last night comparing the Google Pixel and iPhone.

Usually when we buy an iPhone, we get the final product (camera wise) and despite a few bug fixes pushed, we rarely see any Camera updates. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't most of the treatment entirely software based ?

If so, why can't Apple upgrade previous generation of iPhones with HDR and new modern iPhone capabilities?

It could be as little as adding HDR to older iPhones, to add Cinematic modes from the 13 pro max to the 12 pro max for example.

I know that they have their own marketing and they probably want you to feel like when you upgrade, you get new features that no one's else have. But still, I think it'd be appreciable in a near future.

Anyone else feel like Apple has ruined the photo memories with Apple Music soundtracks?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 06:15 AM PST

Just today i tried to share a memory with a family member. With previous iOS versions the process was straightforward, you press share and send the video.

But with Apple Music soundtracks its way more difficult. Know that smooth electronic tune playing in the background? Want to share the memory with it? Too bad, only you can enjoy it like this, to share the video you have to choose an alternative.

So I try to choose an alternative even though the whole point of memories is to automate the process of creation. I choose a tune, and then it creates a whole new and different memory with the soundtrack of choice, leaving the original one unchanged and still not shareable??

So I didn't share the memory at all and I'm ranting about it instead. Talk about "good UX".

TLDR: Apple please go back to making things simpler to use instead of overcomplicating stuff to upsell your other services.

My perfect condition, fully functional Macbook Pro was apparently damaged during Apple Trade-in. After sending me back a broken device, Apple are refusing to reimburse costs or repair the broken parts.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 11:00 PM PST

I'm not asking for support help or advice here, just a warning for those considering Apple Trade-in v a private sale.

I bought a new 16" MacBook Pro because my 2016 15" was way too slow and loud for development work. It was mainly used on one desk with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, so it was in near perfect condition - the screen has no markings at all, and the only wear and tear was from tiny scratches picked up over 5 years on the desk and the odd bit of travel for study.

I was quoted $650 value for trade-in and opted for it over a private sale due to the hassle, and because I figured Apple might swap out the 5 year-old battery and give it an extra few years.

I prepared the device for trade-in after the new one had arrived, resetting the NVRM, booting into recovery, wiping the drives, reinstalling MacOS etc. - and everything worked perfectly - the trackpad, keyboard, touchbar and power button, all of it.

Funnily enough, I even shared a quick video over messenger with my brother noting how I was pleased that I'd looked after it well enough that it still looked new compared to my new 16" - and you can see the Touchbar is on and working fine. I put it in the trade-in kit and kept it on a shelf for a couple days before a courier picked it up (a day late).

A few days later, I received an email saying the trade-in value had been reduced to $0 because the keyboard or touchbar was not working. I was sure this was a mistake and rejected the trade in so it could be sent back for a private sale. I was a little annoyed, but whatever!

I picked it up from the post office and when home, had issues getting it to boot - the flashing folder issue. I called customer support, explained the issue and after eventually using a wired keyboard to boot the device into internet recovery mode, resetting the NVRM again and reinstalling MacOS. It was still broken - we agreed the keyboard was broken and that it must have happened in transit or at the trade in place. The customer support line was very helpful, but said I should go into an Apple Store and get an official service report so they could verify the issue and go from there.

I don't have a car, so it was a pain in the ass to get to an official Apple store. This service report noted exactly what I said: No water damage. No external damage, no dents etc. And that they couldn't fix the keyboard + touchbar or identify the cause. They said take this service report, call a different support number as it was something Apple online support could deal with, and go from there.

After over 30 mins on the phone, they said they could do nothing - not a keyboard repair, not a trade-in reimbursement, nothing at all. I was told I would have to wait two days to call BrightStar, the trade-in partner, to see what they could do, and was given absolutely no indication I could recover the $650 - $900 I had lost because the trade-in process broke my device.

Obviously I will try BrightStar, but they have no access to Apple's service report, so they won't see the notes that there is absolutely no sign whatsoever of physical damage that could have been there before I sent it to them.

Usually, if you engage in a service and they damage $650-800 worth of your equipment, you might expect the company to actually go out of their way to help you, but Apple has done the opposite. They've sent me to multiple places, wasted hours of my time, cost me near a thousand dollars, and they're refusing to escalate or follow up with their trade-in partner. If you are considering trade-in over a private sale, consider the latter - with trade-in, you'll be out of pocket if anything goes wrong.

iPhone 13 pro max is a fantastic phone.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 08:39 PM PST

I love how it feels in my hand. The 11 without a case always was slipping and sliding around and out of my hand. The 13, feels secure in my hand always.

The screen is bright and crystal clear. Every little detail shows up. It is without a doubt the brightest phone screen I've ever seen. I have to turn the brightness down to protect my retinas. I've never paid much attention to OLED but wow. Just wow.

I haven't played much with the cameras but I know I'm going to love the macro feature. I found with the 11 that I couldn't zoom out enough, not so here.

Everything about this phone is smooth, and fast. I have never waited for anything, and nothing stutters or lags. It's a fast phone, and I just love it.

Just had to get this off my chest. Thanks for reading.

    iMessage Voice Memos

Is it just me or is the voice memo for iMessage incessantly annoying?? As far as I know one has to listen to every single memo 100% through, with no way to skip them, fast forward through one, scrub backward/forward, and God forbid your screen turns out and you have to start over. I gotta be missing something, right?

Keyboard getting tougher to press Macbook Air M1 (6 months old)

    Posted: 04 Dec 2021 02:16 AM PST

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else is also suffering from degrading keyboard on a macbook air M1 of about 6 months old. The keyboard is my daily driver, and writing papers and code as a PhD it takes a battering. However failing after just 6 months seems a little premature for me...

    Anyone else having similar issues?

What app subscriptions do you pay for?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 05:03 PM PST

There's a lot of angst and antipathy toward the subscription model, but even anti-subscription folks, including myself, do at least understand the benefits of recurring revenue to fund continued developement of some apps.

And often, if it does fund continued development and consistent feature updates, the subscription can absolutely be worth it.

I'm curious—what subscriptions do you pay for, either happily or begrudgingly? Which premium app subscriptions do you think are totally worth it?
