Coming from Linux/Win, I bought an old MacBook to give MacOS a try, and I am pleasently surprised that there is more to learn than I expected.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 03:06 PM PST

Just wanted to share my experience. I didn't want to invest in an expensive laptop just in case I didn't like the UI, so I started small and bought a 2011 MacBook Air running High Sierra.

I didn't know that the terminal operates very similarly to Linux command line interfaces, and I like that. I installed MacPorts and have installed some things with it to get familiar with it such as Emacs.

I like how clean everything operates. Everything seems very stable, for a decade old computer. I'm currently using it for DJing too, and as long as that's the only program running, it seems to work fine.

    New to me laptop

Does anyone have suggestions for someone wanting to dig deeper into seeing what MacOS can do?

What’s preventing Apple from bringing the orientation dependent volume control buttons of the 2021 iPad Mini to older iPads and iPad pros in a software update?

It seems almost silly that this was omitted from iPad OS 15 on the pros at least. It's such a great feature, but I often find myself monetarily confused when switching between devices. Thoughts?

Perspective: average user still considering the the transition from intel to M1?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 06:13 AM PST

About a week ago, I impulsively picked up an M1 MacBook Air from the refurbished section; biting the bullet and upgrading from my i3 2020 MacBook Air which I regrettably purchased in the fall of 2020 (during the student promotion), just prior to the M1 Mac release.

While this has been iterated time and time again online, WOW! The performance gains are noticeable literally just through navigating the UI and browsing the web.

While I wasn't unimpressed with most of the hardware of my previous model (except for the webcam, which hasn't noticeably improved), the dual core i3 processor in that 2020 model was a serious let down. I could feel (and HEAR) it buckling with minimal chrome usage (5-10 tabs); system animations would become choppy and multitasking became a chore. At times, I wondered if it was even slower than my previous model ( 2014 Quad Core i5 MacBook Air).

Being able to do all of this and more without the computer even becoming warm… and not having to hear those god awful fans ramp up again… was seriously worth the $250 I lost after re-sale. The battery life really is as good as has been iterated online as well…it sips power so much more slowly than my intel MacBook, I don't even look at it anymore.

I'm hoping the performance of these M1 machines are supported well into the future and that performance is sustained, because as of right now, this is the laptop I would recommend to any of my student friends or any family members looking for a solid all around computer.

Switched from Android to iPhone SE! Review.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 02:23 PM PST

Hello! I been a Android user for about 9 years. I switched to the iPhone SE 2020 2 months ago. I am so far LOVING IT! There are other posts like it, but I just want to make a review because there is so much to write about. Here is my review:

    Performance:

So, I switched from the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which I been using since it's release, 2016. In the beginning it was very fast, especially with the OS updates. But over the years, it started slowing down. Around the time I switched, you would start wifi searching, and it would take like 30 seconds to pop up. Apps also took a bit long to boot up. Camera also takes a little to focus. And you can't take a photo until it focuses. And a lot of app crashes. Also, when you restart, the phone takes forever to boot up fully. You could use it, but its extremely slow right after you restart it.

However, with the iPhone SE, it was so much faster. You tap on something, it instantly opens up. You didn't have to wait for the camera to focus (the camera focus is very quick). And, you open up wifi, bluetooth, or something, it instantly starts searching! App crashes are very occasional, the only time it happened was with google maps.

    Features:

My Samsung S7 Galaxy Edge had it's fair share of features. You had Galaxy Store, one handed mode, viberation patterns, bixby, shortcuts. Oh, and themes. Themes were amazing. You had a pack, which had icons, wallpapers, sounds, it changes the entire style. You can make it look like anything. Bixby. I hated it. For android, I used google assistant. Google assistant was my favorite voice assistant. It could do everything. I love it more than siri.

Features on iPhone. A LOT. iMessage and Facetime were a gamechanger, because everyone around me had a iPhone. I liked the idea of iMessage and Facetime. Device exclusive. And these special games, which you can't get on SMS. Like gamepigeon! And also, SHORTCUTS. This is the coolest thing ever. You can automate your device to do anything! I have a shortcut for everyday of the week, and it toggles alarms, changes my status. Widgets are also a lot better than the widgets on Samsung. Its more smooth.

    Price:

So, I don't remember the price I bought this phone before. I do remember, that they also gave me a VR headset with it. They actually gave me 2, so I gave one to my cousins, and they loved it. It aas actually worth the price at the time, because it offered better quality than the other phones at the price. But that quality did not last.

So, because I haven't had a iPhone for a long time, I can not say how it went overtime. The iPhone SE is the cheapest in the lineup. For its price, its amazing. Its very fast, camera is decent. I have friends who have the 11 and 12, and those are also amazing. But their a bit expensive and big for me. Even though the iPhone is expensive, the price is worth it because you get good quality.

    Battery:

Battery life was terrible on the Samsung. It would drain within like 3 hours. And I wasn't even using it! I checked the battery usage, and most of its being used by google play surfaces. And its unremovable :(

The iPhone SE battery life is ok. But it lasts longer than the Samsung, because you can close it and it won't lose a lot of battery life by having it in your pocket.

TLDR: Samsung has good quality but it doesn't last. iPhone has more to offer.

I will follow up in 6 months! See you guys then!
