Memory leaks are crippling my M1 MacBook Pro–and I'm not alone

Apple MacBook M1 Max - Variable 48-120hz on external working with HDR.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 06:41 PM PST

I switched from iMac PRO to my new MacBook M1 Max (it's that fast) and decided I needed a new external monitor. (I had an LG 5k/2k with latest firmware that wasn't cutting it with MacBook -- flickering and HDR failing)

I would have said my dream display would be a ~50" curved 8k/2k display however having seen what 120hz looks like on the MacBook Pro, I have I've amended the dream to include 120hz+.

After several hours of searching, nobody is making my dream monitor of 8k/2k with 120hz with XDR like contrast ratios.. The closest thing I could find was the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 (LGS49AG952NNXZA).

You read recent reviews on this thing (spoiler: train wreck) and you'd think I was crazy to even try this.. however nobody is writing about this display with a Mac, on latest display firmware.. so I thought I'd take a chance / return if things didn't work out. Good news! It's working!

    The details on setup:

    • It's connected to my M1Max 64GB with an IOGear USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 (1.4 is important!) cable.
    • I upgraded G9 firmware to 1008.0. (It shipped with 1004 which is so bad, don't even waste your time until you've upgraded.. you must upgrade firmware! (steps below)
    • On Mac, I turned on HDR, set resolution to 3840 x 1080 (I'm old, I like larger text), and the refresh rate is set to variable (48-120hz)
    • Monitor is set to 120hz with adaptive sync on. Picture mode in monitor is "HDR Dynamic" with contrast set to 100, brightness set to 79, the system / display port version is set to 1.4 (this might be default) .. this isn't some custom calibration, it's just me trying to get it close to the XDR display on MacBook.

So I had a few photos I used as reference, dragging them between the G9 and the XDR, comparing the differences. I quality of the XDR display is amazing, but it's mind blowing once you compare it to other displays in real time. I think the color on the G9 is looking really good, but the *LAPTOP* display is beating it.. just wow. That being said, I am sure the G9 is beating my old LG 5k2k in terms of color range / quality. I miss the extra resolution, but so far I'm loving the real estate.

So that's it for my quick note - I just wanted to get it out on the internet - the M1 Max supports higher refresh rate of 5k monitor (and G-sync/variable refresh) which is pretty sweet.

I'm going to live with the curve for awhile and see how I feel after a few weeks. But so far, my intention is to keep it. Until someone builds my dream 8k 2k monitor.

    Upgrading firmware of G9:

You'll need a USB stick, mine was formatted xfat. When you download 1008.0 from Samsung, safari will unzip it and then you'll have a .dmg.. which being a Mac person, you might think means "hey, I should mount this and find some firmware files." .. nope. you'll get a checksum error. you're not supposed to mount it.. you're supposed to copy that to the USB stick.

So I copied it over, (including zip file because I read conflicting reports on which one worked and I didn't want to do this more than once) .. unmounted the USB and attached to monitor / Initiated upgrade using monitor's "support / software update" menu. It didn't find USB stick or files.. then on a whim I unplugged the monitor's USB cable that was attached to my Mac .. and then it was found.. so make sure monitor isn't attached to anything else via USB when you do upgrade as it won't find stick.

That's it! Fun to be using a Mac with external monitor at 120hz and reasonably good color

MacBook Pro 14" M1Pro battery not as impressive as I thought.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 12:47 PM PST

I have purchased the base model 14" for the sake of time as any modifications would have resulted in me receiving my laptop in January. Moving forward I keep seeing reviews and comments about how amazing the battery is on the 14". I see quotes of "14 to 17 hours of battery life watching videos on YouTube in Safari on full screen," for example. So I tested that. I had only Safari as the only application running, and only one tab open: YouTube. I put on a fairly long video with my brightness setting right about in the middle and volume also in the middle. I got a measly 4 hours max.. very far off from the claims of others. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Correct me if I'm being stupid.

PSA: Don't rely on the magsafe connector to disconnect and save your macbook, those magnets are strong!

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 08:02 PM PST

I've owned multiple cables with magnets that are made to disconnect when pulled on to save the equipment they are connected to. The magsafe connector on the new macbook is not like that.

I can lift my whole 14inch macbook from the table, fully in the air, by holding the connector, it can hold the full weight of the macbook and I can lift it in the air without issue when pulling on it straight. Also, probably due to the shape, when pulling sideways (left or right) it won't disconnect unless you hold the laptop, it will just drag the laptop along. But when pulling upward or downward (like breaking a chocolate bar), it disconnects easily.

Not saying the magsafe connector is bad or wrong, I like how it works, and it feels very secure and it snaps so well into place, just a PSA to make sure people don't think they can rely on it to save their macbook and be clumsy around. If your macbook is plugged via magsafe, be safe around the cable, if you (or your dog) gets tangled in the cable, it will pull your macbook on the floor.

I made an app the let's you see your battery liquid fill up and also allows you to see your phone internals along the way for an aesthetically pleasing look. Giving away codes for launch.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 09:07 AM PST

    Hi r/apple,

I've always found the charging routine a bit bland and wanted to make it a bit more fun and good looking. No more needing to go to your phone, unlock it, look at that small % to see how much your phone has charged. With Liquid Teardown, get an idea at how much your phone has charged by looking at how much the liquid has filled the battery. Each phone internals were made with the upmost precision to make sure it reflects as much your device, in terms of the location of the components as well as their size.

You can get it here or read more here

For the giveaway, just leave a comment letting me know whether you're team :

    • Cable charging
    • Wireless charging
    • MagSafe charging

I'll choose 15 winners in 24h, good luck and thanks for taking the time to read this!

    Intik.

I recently launched Phazr, a free app that enhances your music with haptics and visualizers

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 07:59 AM PST

Phazr is a multisensory music player app. It works with either local DRM-free tracks in your music library or Spotify if you have a premium account.

Haptics are dynamically generated based off the bass frequencies in your music and play on devices supporting Core Haptics and/or connected game controllers.

Visualizers target your device's full resolution and frame rate, with support for Pro Motion displays.

Apple won't take trade in at store if your new item is something that takes a while to ship.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 02:18 PM PST

Bought a new iPad 9 Oct 3rd, it had a delivery date around Nov 2-7th. November 3rd they shipped the new device to me and the trade in box for my old iPad. Received new iPad on the 4th and the trade in box on the 5th. Today, Nov 7th, took my old iPad to Apple store and they did all the diagnostics and checked the old iPad and it checked out in their system fine with the original quoted value. However it would not let them complete the transaction because the system sees the date of purchase being more than 14 days ago. Guy at Apple store and manager looked into it and there was nothing else they could do. Now I have to hope the 3rd party trade in service that Apple uses is going to honor the quote, which in my experience twice before has not been the case.

This script can notify you when MacBook Pro models are available in-store

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 10:49 AM PST

After seeing so many people with shipping issues and delays on their 2021 MacBook Pro orders, and how few models Apple Stores are getting in stock, I decided to try and figure out how I could keep tabs on my local Apple Store inventory. If something like my preferred build became available, I wanted to know immediately so I could put in an order for in-store pickup.

Turns out, Apple makes that pretty easy - the Apple online store (and presumably the app) uses a very simple, though undocumented, web API to check local stores for in-store pickup availability. Once I figured that out, I just had to write a script to poll this API for models I was interested in every minute, and notify me when something was found.

And it worked! The script found my model (14" M1 Max 32c, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD), notified me, I put in an order, and I had it home within the hour. Boom.

I touched up the script to make it a bit more generalizable, and threw it on GitHub - if you're ok tinkering with node scripts and crontab, this will be a huge help in getting your hands on one of these awesome (and exceedingly rare) machines!

1 Year later: what are some iOS Apps running on Apple Silicon that are actually worth checking out?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 03:03 AM PST

I'm using a MacBook Air with M1 since January. I never really tried iOS Apps on it. And the surrounding conversation kinda died out. At first I thought Apple would massively revamp how iOS Apps on the Mac work with Monterey. But apparently they didn't. Windows 11 now does the same thing (though through emulation) and people really look forward to it.

Is this a "would be nice to have as long as you don't have it" but never actually use feature?

In theory, it would be really strong to have to develop an App once and have it in the AppStore for all Apple Devices. But that is kinda Happy World nonsense. I work in a UX focused company. We mainly develop Apps nowadays with Flutter. But UX is nothing you can develop once for every Platform. There are some basic concepts that work differently on a Computer and a Phone. UX will be bad if you don't alter your App. The App will feel foreign on either a desktop or pc.

I really wonder what you guys think about it. Especially devs in the UX space.

I created Pikchange, an easy-to-use iOS photo editor build around automatic human detection that helps you enhance your pictures.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 09:00 AM PST

Pikchange is a photo editor that helps you take your pictures to a new level.

With automatic person segmentation built-in, you can create beautiful pictures by adding blur to the surroundings or setting a completely different background to your portraits.

Refine your photos, make different adjustments for foreground and background, move people around, add effects and much more!

Here are some of the features detailed:

    AUTO-DETECT PEOPLE

Pikchange can detect human faces and bodies using the best-in-class algorithms, thus offering you new possibilities to edit your photos.

    ADD BLUR TO YOUR BACKGROUNDS

You can set different blurs to your background and even change it completely. There are four blur types for you to choose from, fully customizable: Standard, Motion, Radial, Enlight

    MOVE AND RESIZE PEOPLE (BETA)

You can position and scale humans on your custom backgrounds to make them look more natural.

    ADJUST FOREGROUNDS AND BACKGROUNDS

Edit front and back separately. Make great portraits by manually changing image properties individually or by applying custom filters. You can edit just the background, just the foreground, or both. Change brightness, saturation, sharpness, and many others. Add a sepia effect or change the background to grayscale. The possibilities are limitless.

All the computation is done on your device using the latest iOS 15 algorithms so your photos will never leave your phone while using Pikchange. In addition, it has no ads and does not gather any private information.

The app is free to try but in order to share all your edited photos anywhere and save them at full quality, you'll need Pikchange Pro. As an extra perk, you can also change the app icon. Choose from monthly ($2.99) or annual ($9.99) subscriptions or a one-time purchase ($14.99) to get the Pro benefits. The subscriptions have a 3-day free trial.

    Get it from here: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1584013858

Please give it a try and let me know what you think about it! Thank you!
