Maps needs to stop using Yelp. Posted: 14 Nov 2021 07:53 AM PST I'm sick of it. We've known for years that Yelp is a POS company. They extort businesses for good reviews and I hate having to deal with them. And yet, all of the reviews on Maps come from Yelp. I can't even tap one to show the full review without being prompted to download yelp. It's not acceptable for Apple to continue using this garbage company. TL;DR: Yelp is a terrible company and Apple has every capacity to get rid of them. Do it, Apple. [link] [comments]

I made an Apple Watch game. A safecracker on your wrist! It's called UN:SAFE Posted: 14 Nov 2021 07:55 AM PST I made an app for a platform that is really not the biggest gaming platform 😅 un:safe app is a watchOS app, which uses a combination of tactile, auditory, and visual queues to help you nail that sweet spot in the dial and open the safe. Hone your skills and train your senses to reach the highest level! Maybe it's only for the bragging rights, but hey, you are no thief, are you?! I made a nice promo Video: And here it is on the store 🙌 Hope you like it! Any feedback is more than welcome! 🙌 [link] [comments]

The M1 Pro has completely exploded the amount of research and modelling I can do in a day! Posted: 14 Nov 2021 04:15 AM PST Hi, So, I run a lot of stochastic simulations. They're on my blog here if you're interested in mathematical modelling in biology. Upgrading from a 2018 iMac 27in to the base model 14 inch pro has cut the time it takes me to run a single experiment from 15 minutes down to 3 minutes! That might seem like not a lot of time to be so excited about, but I run HUNDREDS of these experiments a week. I cannot explain how much more productive I am from such a simple upgrade. Has anyone else felt their workflow change so dramatically the upgrade? If so please do share, I'd love to know. Especially any research or scientific fields! [link] [comments]
Time with the 13 Mini has me asking myself, “Are Phones Getting Too Big?” Posted: 14 Nov 2021 05:33 AM PST Every year when Apple announce their new range of iPhones I get wrapped up in my love of tech and as I always I order my new iPhone for launch day. This year for me it was the iPhone 13 Pro and I love it. That being said I have always preferred a smaller form factor iPhone with both high end features and performance. Dating back to the iPhone 5 and 5S I loved the 4" form factor, I even loved the 5.8" form factor of my 11 Pro as it was still manageable and then when it was increased to 6.1" with the 12 Pro I was somewhat disappointed and I thought to myself, "But why?". Being the Apple fan I am, I accepted the size increase and upgraded to both the 12 Pro in 2020 and then the 13 Pro this year. I have loved the 13 Pro for its incredible battery life, impressive cameras and the 120hz adaptive ProMotion, faults aside (more on that below). However, the 13 Mini like last years 12 Mini again caught my eye and with the significant battery improvements across the 13 line up, my interest had further spiked in the 13 Mini. Despite enjoying the feature set and improvements of my 13 Pro, it was sent in for repair and was replaced due to a number of issues. Upon being unboxed it had a number of scratches on the display, a scratch on one of the rear camera lens, touch screen issues (both response and calibration) and camera issues (freezing and blacking out requiring the device to be restarted every time). During that time I decided to purchase a 13 Mini as I did not have a spare phone to use and simply put, I fell in love with it. The ease of use with being able to reach all corner of the screen, being so pocketable and barely noticing it was there, using it one handed confidently while on the go and then there is the feeling of having a device so small yet as powerful as it's larger counterparts. It was a breath of fresh air and I know that content consumption in the way of social media, streaming online video or gaming may feel less expansive for some, however I was more shocked at how I wasn't at all phased by the loss of realestate going from 6.1" to a 5.4" screen. It's as if I almost had not noticed, in the initial moments of holding it in my hand I spent more time focussed on how cute it was and how easy it was to hold. Honestly, for me it wasn't any less of an experience compared to the 6.1" display of the 13 Pro. I found that the screen realestate was more than enough and in no way did I feel it was hindering my use or taking away from my experience be it watching YouTube or TikTok, scrolling social media, browsing the web and typing was a minor adjustment that I made within a few hours. What I did notice was how it did not fatigue my hand during extended use compared to my 13 Pro with shorter periods of use. The only thing I felt I was missing was the telephoto lens and the stainless steel frame. These are two options that I genuinely do love about the Pro series iPhones. The telephoto for those more flattering images when it comes to portraiture or further reach without loss of quality. Then there is the stainless steel frame for durability and not to mention it looks beautiful the fingerprints aside. It got me thinking, have phones gotten too big? Have we been conditioned to think that "bigger is better?". Is screen size being prioritised over practicality? Are there not enough high end compact options? For example, why exclude those needing or wanting a small phone from having a telephoto lens? Just because someone wants a smaller phone, does that mean they automatically don't want to zoom in on their subjects when taking a photo? Having an iPhone that compliments my life and doesn't consume my hands, my pockets and storage in my car is both refreshing and practical, it made sense. My replacement 13 Pro has returned, I have set it up and am now using it but my mind keeps wandering back to my 13 Mini currently sitting in my tech bag. I almost felt more enjoyment using the 13 Mini due to how practical it is and how seamlessly it fit into my day. Telephoto lens aside, It did everything my larger iPhone 13 Pro does functionally yet far more comfortably by being less intrusive and more complimentary to my day I know there are people out there wondering, "how's the battery life though?". Well I'm happy to report that with my use case consisting of multiple alarms, email, SMS/iMessage, multiple calls (some of which are at length), searching the web, social media and YouTube I managed to hit just over 6 hours of screen on time with 20% battery remaining. I was impressed as with my 12 Pro last year, I would average 5.5 hours to 6.5 hours, sometimes much less. Although it will never see the light of day, my ideal iPhone would be a 13 Mini Pro. Carry over the 3X Telephoto, stainless steel frame and LiDAR, remove Face ID leaving a hole punch camera, place Touch ID in the power button, for me it would be an ideal device and also realistic with current technology. On the smaller 5.4" screen I did not notice the omission that was ProMotion. I'd be happy to drop the 120hz for the battery gains that we saw this year as iOS being so well optimised along with the smaller screen, it wasn't hugely obvious that it was 60hz and not 120hz. Although this is a long winded post based on my own personal experience and my own perspective, it may offer some insight for those of you that are considering the 13 Mini. [link] [comments]

As an amateur coder, I have released my second app into the App Store! Posted: 14 Nov 2021 04:26 PM PST I created a new app that is super simple! It started as a personal project, something I wanted to use to help myself, and then I built it to release to all! It's called "Hey Me, Remind Me" It's a silly play on words similar to talking to a virtual assistant, such as Siri. But towards yourself! This differs from a standard reminders app by being simple, quick to setup, and have an element of randomization! In the app, you type a reminder to yourself of what you want consistent reminders about. You can adjust how many times per day you are notified and the app handles the rest! Reminding you at random times to keep this persistent reminder in mind! Personally, I've been using it to remind me to eat healthy and watch my spending. But I've seen some other uses such as checking posture, get up and clean something, get a drink of water, and even just take a moment to step away, breathe, and smile. Think of it like a buddy, or a companion, that follows you around and taps you on the shoulder from time to time to remind you of something, to help keep it in the forefront of your mind! I'm probably over explaining something that is meant to be simple, so I'll just drop the link and get out your hair! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hey-me-remind-me/id1594956671 Thanks for looking! How often do you use your iPad? Posted: 14 Nov 2021 06:48 AM PST Hey all! I'm curious, how many people bought one with the intent to use it everyday, replace their main computer with, or just use it in conjunction with their other devices, and it sits idle because it's perhaps just your phone but larger? Not trying to start a battle thread, but a, do you use it as much or more than you expected to? Or does it use sit? Thanks for your thoughts! [link] [comments]
Apple needs to make it so you can mute app groups from the home screen Posted: 14 Nov 2021 04:34 PM PST I have all of my work apps in one folder on the Home Screen (outlook/teams/etc) and when I take PTO I like to unplug fully and turn off notifications from all work apps. Would be so convenient just to long press the whole folder and turn off notifications for all apps within that folder. Would make it easy to do it at the end of the day when I sign off for the day as well when I don't want to see notifications after work hours. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
I felt old seeing the good old 3GS Posted: 14 Nov 2021 11:26 PM PST Coworker brought in an old 3GS and I looked at the 11 PRO MAX in comparison (https://imgur.com/a/LFUCohl) It's crazy to think how far technology has come. Yet the old device was a literal breakthrough I couldn't not post this. [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Nov 2021 05:43 PM PST Hi r/apple! I created my first Safari extension app. Y2G Mapper offers a simple yet powerful Safari extension that redirects Yelp links to Google Maps! With this app, you don't need to copy/paste business names/addresses since the redirect can work automatically or manually based on your preference. The application is made primarily for those people who prefer to use Google Maps app to check the business information, menu, and reviews. Features:
Users have an option to give access to yelp.com links which should be enough for those located in USA. There is an option to give access to "Other Websites" to allow detection of Yelp pages in other countries. Yelp has multiple country specific domains (e.g. yelp.it, yelp.com.br and many more) and allowing access to Other Websites is the only way to support those links. Inside of the application you can find tutorials that explain more details and provide steps. The Y2G Mapper extension will only work if you visit Yelp pages and other links are ignored. App Website: https://y2gmapper.app You can download Y2G Mapper: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1593332528 I am also giving away promo codes for this app. All you need to do is leave a comment with your favorite type of cuisine. I will choose 10 random winners in 48 hours! [link] [comments]
Inevitable trade-in drama - thanks Apple or Phobio Posted: 14 Nov 2021 08:43 AM PST Hey guys, here is another drama report about trade-in in this sub, and second time for me to go through this process. So the thing is, I bought the 14-inch MacBook and tried to trade in my 15-inch 2016 MacBook pro. The estimate was $750, and I had no complains about the price. After sending it to Phobio, there was no update for a week-ish. Since I had some drama with them before, I kinda had the feeling something would happen, like reducing the price to $0 for devices not wiped or any other bs. But yesterday, I got their email saying the trade-in was approved, for $750. I was kinda surprised and happy because there is no drama at all this time. Good job Apple and Phobio! Then this morning, the drama came, lol. I did not even expect this. I got their gift card (instead of refunding my credit card), and it is only $70... Then I have no option to decline or do anything. On Apple's website, it says the order is not under my account, even though it appears under my account... Funny. I have also checked my credit card, no refunding from Apple at all. Since it's sunday, I cannot even call them to confirm. I guess I will just follow up on Monday, and give updates here about it. Here are some screenshots of the emails: https://imgur.com/a/JOVI9k2 [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Nov 2021 10:40 AM PST I know, it's super niche but I think it's a unique app with cool features.
I have a subscription to help support the app and server costs. It's entirely optional but does give you the option to customize the cards you see in the lists. I made this project in SwiftUI and used Firebase Cloud Messaging to implement notifications. Information is retrieved from my Node API. Feel free to AMA! [link] [comments]

HDR content disabled on Youtube? Posted: 14 Nov 2021 04:54 AM PST I posted last week on the issue that the HDR content was causing a kernel panic on the new M1 MBP. It was crashing mainly with Chrome and Safari (Tab Layout Separate) while working fine in Edge, Safari (Tab Layout Compact), Opera, Brave, Vivaldi. I went to watch HDR content again today on Youtube, and to my surprise it's been disabled. Now it shows only in normal mode. I tried several browsers and all the same. So I guess it's Youtube who disabled it. The good news is it's no longer crashing... Here is an example of a video that was HDR: https://youtu.be/njX2bu-_Vw4 Edit: [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Nov 2021 07:18 AM PST I've just released a new app called Fit500. In a nutshell, it reads your Apple Health and Fitness (i.e. Apple Watch) workout data and allows you to build customisable "cards" to view, track and compare this data. You can summarise stats over a time period, compare one period against another, or track progress towards a goal. Some example use cases would be tracking your fastest 5K run, comparing your swims this month against the previous month, or pretty much any stats that are gathered from workouts you've recorded with Apple Watch. I've basically built this with my own needs and wants in mind over the last year of running and exercising, so hopefully it'll appeal to other stats/numbers driven users too! It also makes easily shareable images showing whichever stats you like. There's also an iPad companion app that syncs from your phone so you can view your cards on a bigger screen. And a macOS app on the way very soon! It's free to download on the App Store, with a once-off in-app purchase to unlock all its features: https://apps.apple.com/ie/app/fit500/id1592125362 [link] [comments]
