Weird: MS Edge is actually better than Safari (now).

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:24 PM PDT

Hate to say it and probably get downvoted for this: For me Microsoft Edge is now the superior browser on a Mac (compared to Safari), which is somewhat ridiculous. Not only does it have no compatibility issues, it also feels a lot snappier and "lighter". For me Safari is getting worse every year and "World's fastest browser" my a….

What do you guys think? Do you still prefer Safari (which I also did for a long time) and if yes, why?

Switching from a 2015 to 2020 MBP. What to expect?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 12:44 AM PDT

It looks like my company has bought me a new computer to help speed up my my workflow. I'd only ever owned a Retina iMac until starting here, so I'm still pretty clueless about the world of MacBooks—are there any big differences between the 2015 and 2020 models besides the Touch Bar and M1 chip?

I found a quick little thing to do to quickly "un-minimize" your application window (not the right-click the app on your dock method) when you find yourself opening the app from cmd+tab after minimizing it! (Would greatly help new macOS users too)

Noise cancelling software for mac? Is this even possible?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 01:20 AM PDT

I'm not exactly sure how noise canceling works apart from the self explanatory part; it uses microphones to send "opposite" sound waves (into a headset) of the ones that the microphones are picking up. I'm not sure if it's possible to do this at a software level or it's at a deeper level. Is this even possible for ANC or PNC? If so, are there any softwares I can download on mac os that I can use to at least mask some sound? I have a pretty good pair of headphones which also has a pretty good mic, but no built-in noise cancelling/masking.

    All comments appreciated!

Can anyone provide screenshots of macOS on a 27" 4K display? (Need it to compare 1440p and 4K displays)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:44 PM PDT

    Hey there,

As the title says, I want to see macOS on a 27" 4K screen with (Looks like 2560x1440) and without scaling (Native 4K) if possible. This will greatly aid in my decision between a 1440p screen and a 4K screen at 27". (Although 4K does have better text clarity by default)

I want to see if things are too small for my liking. Personally, I like things small. The text size on my iPad is set to the lowest, I use the small taskbar in Windows, etc.

I found 1440p screenshots here: Comment on 1440p Scaling | Difference with 1440p

Thanks, Have a Great Day :)

Microsoft bluetooth mouse on intel Mac Mini feels spotty?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 04:13 PM PDT

Hey folks, got a Microsoft mouse recently and thought that if it were Bluetooth it'd at least be better than the Dell USB based wireless mouse I was using. I'm on a bit of a budget currently so a Magic Mouse 2 was off the board.

This mouse feels slow and spotty. I didn't expect it to be as responsive and accurate as a wired mouse but it doesn't feel nice to use whatsoever. Is there something I'm not picking up on? Am I better off just saving up and grabbing a Magic Keyboard and Mouse combo?

    Thanks in advance!

    Disk Utility

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:02 PM PDT

I have a very dumb question... if I erase my hard drive using disk utility will I be able to access it again to reinstall the system or my mac will be totally empty?

I have a Mac book pro 2012 and it is stuck on the loading screen, I've tried everything I found in the internet but nothing works.

If i try to reinstall the system I get this message "Failed to Download MacOs Sierra, Use the Purchases Page to Try Again"

My last hope seems to try to install Catalina from the internet utility but I don't have enough free storage space, that's why I'm wondering if I erase the disk I will still be able to access this option.

Does anyone know a way to go into a program by hovering over it?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 03:28 PM PDT

I'm sure the title doesn't make too much sense, but here's the situation.

I have two screens. One screen has Chrome running YouTube the other has Blender open (3D modelling software). I use YouTube to play the tutorial for learning Blender.

A problem I have is that I'll press a shortcut thinking that I'm in Blender, when really I'm still in my Chrome instance. Which will do some odd things in Chrome sometimes.

What would be awesome, is that instead of having to click in Blender first before I can use it, is if the window context automatically switches to Blender, simply because my cursor is over that window. Is this possible at all?

2020 iMac RAM upgrade best options?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 03:17 PM PDT

Hello! I have an iMac 2020 3.6 GHz, 10-core Intel i9 machine which originally came with 8 GB and I upgraded it to 40 by adding a 32 GB RAM. I use Lightroom, FCPX and Photoshop everyday and do heavy browsing in Safari. I noticed that my less than an year old machine started slowing a bit especially when I do tasks like exporting images in Lightroom and things. I was thinking to upgrade my RAM and currently my RAM slots are 4-4-32-X. There is an empty slot and I would like to know if I should go for a direct 128 GB or 64 GB? Budget is not a problem.

Asking here cos I once read (don't remember where) that memory allocation works the best if the RAM is installed like 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256. It sounds weird but I wanted to know your advice before I pull the trigger.

    TIA

Messages missing history in side panel

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:19 PM PDT

Messages missing history in side panel

SITUATION: After a reboot yesturday, when I opened Messages on my iMac, the history side panel was empty (except for one random message).

    https://preview.redd.it/n0kpxmtw5dk71.png?width=1076&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e5a713e2a25ee874d20c64dec8dd205c41cc348

My history of messages are still on my MacBook, iPhone, and iPad. The message files are still in the archive folder of ~/library/messages.

New messages come in fine, but don't connect to the old messages to build the history on the imac.

FIX ATTEMPTS: Another restart - nothing.
    Toggled iCloud sync. - nothing
    deleted ichat preference - nothing
used ONYX to clean various caches and stuff (also to try fixing another problem where some media files are listing as folders) - nothing
disabled/re-enabled (signed out/in) of Apple account for messages. - nothing
Left on for a while to see if slowly rebuilt - nothing.

Supposition: Messing around with one of these might do it, but I have no idea what.

QUERY: Can anyone help me out on what to do next?

Help with Mac OS X Reinstall

Help with Mac OS X Reinstall

So i already went through with the install. Took about 45 minutes and it brought me back to this point. I made a post previously about the entering the date in the terminal and some one pointed out that most people do that when bringing the computer back to a older version. My goal here is to just do a clean install from factory of Mac OS. This is my little brother computer and he wanted it wiped since he has not done that since he got it. I believe he got the computer in 2016-17 Brand New. When ever i go to start up disk, there is not one for me to choose from. Like i said im a windows user and a little lost with mac. Im thinking that i have to make the SSD with the operating syestem installed on it the start up disk but i do not know how to do that. Any help would be great!

Family Photo Backup Drive SSD Recommendations?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:55 PM PDT

TL/DR: Looking for suggestions on a decently priced SSD that can be popped in an external drive housing.

So as a family, we back up our photos to a single hard drive that is backed up at home and at my office. The main backup is a pain in the ass because the library has gotten so large and the backup drive is a Seagate HHD drive.

I'm wanting to move the main backup from HHD do a SSD drive. I'll keep the redundant copies on HDD because I can usually just let them run and not worry about what they happen to be doing.

Any suggestions on decently priced SSD drives that can be popped in an enclosure?

Wiped my mac but now cant seem to do anything?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:06 AM PDT

My macbook pro has been ungodly slow for the last couple of weeks (15 inch 2020 model i9 cpu). So figured Id try to just wipe it back to factory settings.

However now when I boot up my mac I get a globe with a "enter your wifi". I do this it then takes 10 minutes loading/downloading something before giving me a mysterious -2004f error with a warning sign infront of a globe with me being unable to continue any further.

I tried googling it but got nothing for the error and the apple reset instructions are beyond useless. So is there any way to fix this or do I now own a fancy silver paper weight?
