Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion - What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 04:00 PM PDT

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

X-Com 2 is really well implemented for iOS.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:27 PM PDT

I play it on 2 devices, iPhone SE2 and an iPad, it runs really smoothly on both devices, though it it's much more fun to play on the iPad, as SE small display makes it a eye strain for strategy.

What is really surprising is how well the touch control work and how well thought out they are along with the interface. I have played for around 5 hours, I have not had a single misclick action, which I cannot say for the PC implementation where I would still have misclick even after 120hours of play.

The only thing annoying is how much of a drain the game is on the battery, it's surprising, it's a Full On AAA strategy title with a lot of systems and subsystems implemented without any compromise, but it does chug battery like crazy, 20ish % for an hour of play on iPad. Still would recommend the game.

Note, the game doesn't not have controller support, though it doesn't really need one, considering how well it's implemented.

Gaming on the iPad: An macOS/PC User’s Report on Going iPad-Primary

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:38 AM PDT

I recently made the move from macOS to a 2021 11" iPad Pro as my primary computing platform. The M1 chip seems like a winner (although I realize that's partially marketing speak and that the A14X is quite a chip too) and a bunch of QoL improvements in iPadOS 15 (running the public beta) made it seem like the platform was mature enough for me to make the jump.

After getting my work environment set up, I went ahead and started setting up a gaming Home Screen. I've been an iPhone user for over a decade, but never paid much attention to games simply because I didn't enjoy the small screen for games that much, and always had more powerful options at home where I did a lot of my gaming. But that's changing now!

I wanted to share a few of the games I've been playing since I picked this thing up; some of this will likely be regurgitating common recommendations on the subreddit, but I wanted to just share the perspective of someone moving into the iPad ecosystem.

First up, I wanted to get a couple of the games I was playing off the platform:

    • Divinity: Original Sin 2: An amazing port of this deep CRPG. I was able to manually transfer my Steam save over to my iPad and pick up where I left off. Not going to lie: I was blown away with how well this runs and how good it looks. This is bonfire one of the biggest, best RPGs to be made in the last several years. Not only is the story deep with a lot of player agency, the turn-based combat system has a deep elemental system where you'll be combining various effects — water, fire, air, ice, electricity, poison, etc. — to produce combination effects and exploit enemy weaknesses. All around a great game.
    • Dead Cells: One of the best rogue-likes I've ever played. Inspired by Castlevania-type 2D combat, Dead Cells impressed early on by just how good it managed to make that type of game feel. Just a joy to move around and play. It's matured into a great game with tense combat, varied environments, and a ton of fun items to unlock. Highly recommended.
    • Stardew Valley: An extremely enjoyable "farm sim" game, but perhaps more accurately a small town life simulator. I don't know exactly how to describe it, other than it's extremely pleasant with a ton to do. It's great fun.
    • Bastion: I haven't actually played this on my iPad yet, but I did pick it up a while back while I only had an iPhone. A great game I thoroughly enjoyed when it came out on PC.

I know there are a few other notable cross-platform games I should check out. Once I'm closer to the end of Divinity, I'll probably pick up XCOM 2. There are a few PC games I really would like to show up on iPad: Hades, Hollow Knight, Battletech (that one would likely be a pipe dream), Rise of the Tomb Raider (this one is already M1 compiled; I assume the iPad absence is due to memory issues and/or lack of justification to create touch controls), or games like Lair of a Clockwork God. I think that if games could be released with the requirement for controller support, it would make the ecosystem for games healthier. That said, with touch-screen controls becoming a system API, it should be easier for companies to do a quick port and throw a splash screen up recommending a controller the way they did with headphones way back in the day.

After getting a few of the PC games I've been playing, I explored board games, as I enjoy them and figured with the larger screen of the iPad, it'd be way more worthwhile than on an iPhone.

    • Root: An asymmetric area control game where various animal species battle it out for supremacy in the forest. It's really good!
    • Street Masters: A card-driven beat-em-up game inspired heavily by the arcade fighters of the 90s (think Streets of Rage). The app is fairly basic, but does a good job of providing the game to you and has most of the features of the actual board game. The game is made by the Sadler brothers, who are some of the best at creating really enjoyable combo-driven card games.

There are a few others I'd like to get, but will probably wait for a sale, including Scythe and Raiders of the North Sea.

The, it was onto iOS/iPadOS games. So far, I've ended up with:

    • Alto's Adventure|Odyssey: Both are beautiful and enjoyable 1-tap/button auto-surfers.
    • Mini Metro: Do your best to create an ever-expanding subway system and keep overcrowding at bay.
    • Mini Motor Racing: This one I did play on my iPhone years ago and I downloaded for the memories and to see it on a bigger screen. It hasn't been updated in forever so it doesn't support the new screen sizes or controllers, and the AI is pretty dumb. But the steering wheel controls still have a great feel and reward smooth drifting through curves and the tracks look pretty good. It's a solid 3⭐️ game, but is a bit long in the tooth at this point.
    • Motorsport Manager 3: I've been enjoying the F1 documentary on Netflix lately, so I picked this up. Free to play and years without an update. Doesn't support the newer screen sizes, but on the bright side I haven't run into anything that makes me feel the free-to-play extortion tactics are coming out yet. It captures the feeling of managing a racing team quite well and it's been fun training up drivers, improving our cars, and trying new race strategies.
    • Rush Rally Origins: I just picked this up yesterday, but it's a banger. I don't think the cars handle realistically but the model is consistent and rewards skillful mastery. The cars feel like they have weight and when you're able to get to the point where you can whip out the tail and drift around a corner at high speeds, it feels really good. The driving model is taking me a bit of adjusting to; it features a lot of understeer and doesn't really punish at all for oversteer (you can correct from oversteer situations far, far easier than understeer), but I think that's part of what makes it feel so good to drift around the corner and pop out down the straightaway. Graphics are good, but are lacking a certain je ne sai quoix. It could be the low-poly cars, it could be the absence of any depth of field or motion blur, or...something. It looks fine. The only thing that I wish were better were the engine noises. They're fairly generic sounding, and when racing with other cars on the track, they all use the same sound and it's just a racket of a high-pitched buzz. All in all, though, this game is a ton of fun to play, is challenging, and rewards skill.
    • Space Marshals 3: Tried out the demo and really enjoyed it, so I purchased Chpaters 1+2. I haven't seen anything quite like this on iOS where you're given a relatively open level with linear portions and have an option to tackle things with stealth or guns blazing. So far I've run into a couple issues: (a) there seems to be no music at all while playing? Is that right? (b) I'm experiencing crashes part-way through the first level of the first chapter. I'm not sure if this is due to my controller use, using the public beta of iPadOS 15, or an actual issue with the game on all platforms. I haven't seen much about it anywhere else, so I'll chalk it up to the OS beta? I've e-mailed their support about it. It's free to try, so I recommend you do!
    • Threes: Another one of the limited games I played on my phone. Just a sublime tile sliding game.

And that's about it for now! I haven't dived too deeply into iOS gaming simply because so many games seem like cheap knock-offs of other things, and many of the good ones even have cheap sounding names that might subvert my expectations of quality.

If anyone has more suggestions for me, I'd love to hear them! I'll be gaming mainly on my iPad, and controller support is a huge plus.

All in all I'm quite happy with things so far. Divinity shows that you can create high-quality AAA experiences on the device given the time and effort (please, if you're interested, buy it! The price is a steal compared to other platforms and companies need to see the investment is worth it). I hope that Apple making on-screen controls a system API, combined with system support for Xbox, PS, and MFi controllers, will make it easier for console/PC games to make the jump. And Apple, please add a system API like you have with videos to allow 16:9 1080P output for games to an external display.

They don't seem to have released any new games for a while now? Is the service still actively putting out more games or is it just kinda hit its limit now?

Any repair games like Assemble With Care ?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:07 PM PDT

The story of the game is amazing and the repair mechanic really complements it very well.

But I enjoyed repairing objects a lot so I am looking for other games with similar mechanics -- not necessary with a good story

Something i can dissassemble, move around, unscrew things, fix it, then assemble everything back again. Dealing with circuit board / wires / parts to make it work again is a plus.

Looking for a game recommendation similar to Valor HD

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:43 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I used to try to "play" Valor HD way back when. I enjoyed the fact that it was battles based on a real time clock. Any newer games that are similar? Main downside to this game was the well established clans could and would bully the new players out of worlds quick. Clash of Clans was fun for a while but not quite the same.

Calling players of Battleship & Monopoly!!

Who wants to play? Way too many AI generated games which is pretty eh. Please pm if you play these and want to have a game!!

Even though Hasbro is a big franchise I don't see much of a fanbase for these ios versions.

    Trying to find a game

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:23 PM PDT

I used to play this fun game when I was younger and I can't find it or remember it's name. Has anyone played stick wars? It was a similar style of game but it was based on World War Two and you would go across the war with different maps and the game got progressively harder as you went from Sicily to Italy to Normandy to France to Germany. I loved the game and hate I can never find it again.
