Daily Megathread - On-Device CSAM Scanning Posted: 14 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT Hi r/Apple, welcome to today's megathread to discuss Apple's new CSAM on-device scanning. As a reminder, here are the current ground rules: We will be posting daily megathreads for the time being (at 9 AM ET) to centralize some of the discussion on this issue. This was decided by a sub-wide poll, results here. We will still be allowing news links in the main feed that provide new information or analysis. Old news links, or those that re-hash known information, will be directed to the megathread. The mod team will also, on a case by case basis, approve high-quality discussion posts in the main feed, but we will try to keep this to a minimum. Please continue to be respectful to each other in your discussions. Thank you! For more information about this issue, please see Apple's FAQ as well as an analysis by the EFF. A detailed technical analysis can be found here. [link] [comments]

I developed a clean TI-84 like scientific calculator (my first app) Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:01 AM PDT I'm a rising junior at UT Arlington and I've been messing around with programming/development for about 4 years now. Since I started programming, I have always wanted to develop some kind of app, but I always ran into the challenge of making something both useful and more importantly original. Stories like those about Brian Chesky starting Airbnb (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W608u6sBFpo) and Justin Kan creating twitch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUOdBXYIMM8) inspired me to start looking for simple, everyday problems that I could solve and after a few months of thinking I came up with an idea. As a computer science major, I take a lot of math and engineering classes. In these classes I am doing a lot of math that pretty much requires a scientific calculator. While there are calculator apps on the iPhone, it was hard to do any kind of math on my phone for two reasons specifically. Firstly, using the built in iPhone calculator for anything other than simple operations like 2+4 or 3/6 is nearly impossible because you cannot enter an entire expressions before evaluating it. This limits you to only simple operations and also many less common operations like sin and x^y are confusing to use. Secondly, all other calculators on the App Store either have ads, are paid, are unintuitive, look ugly, or are a combination of these. Because of this and the fact that I have always had a strong interest in math, I figured I might be able to make something useful here. I developed a free calculator for iPhone and iPad called Calculation! (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/calculation/id1574468544) using my experience and research in iOS development, UI/UX, math, and order of operations. It's a scientific calculator with an expression history similar to a TI-84 that allows you to type entire expressions (with parenthesis if necessary). It contains the most common operations like trig functions, basic operations (+, -, *, /, ^), and others like log and sqrt. On top of this, I thought that many other calculator apps didn't take advantage of the fact that they were on a platform like iPhone so I added a double tap to copy gesture for previous expressions which I felt was a much needed. It allows you to easily copy previously typed out expressions and paste them to your working expression so that you don't have to constantly retype things. All of these features together make for a calculator that really is unique on the App Store. Its simple, looks clean, does exactly what it's supposed to do, and that's it. (Btw I don't make any money on this or steal any data at all (I don't even know how to do that…)) Though school will be starting up here in about two weeks, I eventually plan on adding a few features when I can get around to it:
In total, it took me about a month and a half to develop from start to finish. I started by designing the UI in Figma and developed it in Xcode with UIKit & Storyboards. I am still extremely new to development and open to any advice or feedback. Thanks! [link] [comments]
I've built a cool new system activity monitor app for your Mac Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:12 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm Oleh, a developer of Usage for Mac, a simple, customizable, and insightful app to monitor Mac's activity. I decided to build it after its companion app on iOS got popular, users of it started asking for the Mac version, and after research I saw an opportunity in it. Currently the app has basic monitoring for battery, processor, storage, memory and network. I'm already working on several new and exciting additions. Overtime expect it to be a few times more rich product than it is right now. I'm very open for feedback, and would love to hear what you think and what ideas you might have. Most of all I hope you find it an interesting and useful app for yourself! Usage for Mac: https://apps.apple.com/app/usage-system-activity-monitor/id1561788435 [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Aug 2021 06:52 AM PDT Hi everyone, I'm looking at picking up a 12 Mini for my next phone but am seeing mixed reviews on battery, some are reporting 3 hours while the Apple site says 15 hours video playback. Can anyone please tell me what their experiences have been like with the battery? I'll be using it for social media (for work), emails, taking photos and listening to music. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Aug 2021 09:04 PM PDT Just an idea, ie. the Notch comes to Mac. (I probably don't have direct picture embed permissions, so here's the link below). [link] [comments] |
