Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:06 PM PDT Hello all, I don't know if this is the right place to put this question and it's a bit of a strange one but here we go. I was wondering if there is any way to make the output of a terminal window, the desktop background in macOS (Big Sur v. 11.4). I found a really cool GitHub repository (https://github.com/trehn/termtrack) that tracks satellites in your terminal and I want to be able to have it as my desktop background so I can follow the ISS throughout the day. I don't need to be able to interact with the terminal. If I could have any help, that'd be swell. I can write code if required. Thanks! [link] [comments]
MacBook Air doesn't turn on automatically when I open the lid. Help! Posted: 25 Jul 2021 12:30 AM PDT When my MacBook air has been in sleep mode for a while like overnight it doesn't turn on automatically when I open the lid. I have to hold the power button for a few seconds before it turns on. It would also ask me to enter the passwords of all my email accounts and Apple id when this happens. This doesn't happen always just when it is in sleep for over 5-6 hours. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Jul 2021 09:44 PM PDT However, after erasing the hard drive and restarting, it asked me to enter my wifi password to continue and after that I am stuck in the options screen where it only shows the option to reinstall macOS Monterey beta. When I try to do that it just stays on the time remaining screen for a few minutes and keeps failing. Is there any way to reinstall Big Sur without taking my Mac to service centre as we are under lockdown and I cannot visit any service centre for now. [link] [comments]
Going from Catalina to Monterey in the coming months - biggest changes? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 09:35 PM PDT Hi all, I'll be picking up a new M1/M1x/M2 Macbook when the next range release to replace my 2012 Macbook Pro. I know its a few months away, but what are the major changes from Catalina to the newer OS updates that I should know about? My 2012 only goes up to Catalina, so I haven't been able to use Big Sur while it's been available. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Jul 2021 12:32 AM PDT So there is this middle manager at work who uses his own macbook despite the company policies of using the preconfigured dell laptops with exchange and intranet access. The guy legit thinks that with an apple computer he does not have to think like a computer and he can simply be creative and use his instinct when "creating big things" In reality, creating big things on an apple machine for most users with fanboy mentality results in creating a big pile of garbage because the user does not take the practical limits of the machine into account. I work as an engineer and I know that the performance of a machine is there to fully use it as effective as possible. And despite these efforts we regularly hit the limits of the rig. I know, this is because windows is rubbish, I know. In the history, big things were created only when severe limits were present. Creativity needs to be facing constraints in order to grow. This guy managed to make a single product flyer and the project file in photoshop was 800 megs while my entire work folder for the complete new product was a mere 100 MB The phrase from the title is from a meeting where this guy tried to run a long, ineffectively written formula in excel over the whole column of 65000 rows and instead of blaming his own incompetency, he externalized the problem while presuming that other computers would fail with this task more miserably even though he seemed not to comprehend the root of the problem at all, because an apple user dont have to deal with such technical details, the computer is expected to effortlessly handle utterly stupid requests, [link] [comments]
Spinning Beach Ball every day since upgrading to Big Sur... the saga continues Posted: 24 Jul 2021 04:20 PM PDT So, I thought that uninstalling a crashing driver app would fix my Big Sur and Chrome problem. I switched from Chrome to Firefox, and my mid-2015 MacBookPro is STILL spinning pretty much every morning. I have to force shut down, because Force Quit won't work. Any advice before I wipe the drive and downgrade to Catalina? Will this also affect my ability to run the latest issue of Pages, which I need for work? Running Big Sur 11.4 on a mid-2015 Retina 13-inch MBP (yes, I know this is a bad idea, which is why I'm asking for help.) [link] [comments]

Is there a way to get Mac to show the current file being transferred? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 08:43 AM PDT like on Windows where it not only shows you your progress, but also the write speed and the current file being transferred? [link] [comments]
Tried to bootcamp Windows 7 onto 2011-iMac SSD, lost 156GB of space Posted: 24 Jul 2021 12:25 PM PDT As the title states, I tried to bootcamp windows 7 onto my 2011-iMac and now I'm having issues getting my space back, as I believe the MS-DOS partition was deleted instead of over-written by the Mac partition using the +/- pie chart method (doesn't work). It shows my HD is 256GB (correct) but it's showing as a GUID partition-map format, then my OS is in a 100GB APFS container. When I tried to install Windows 7 onto the MS-DOS partition it said said it couldn't be downloaded there because it was GPT. I think I accidentally deleted the Windows partition there on the Windows install screen by mistake. Now I can't seem to recover the 150GB without seemingly reformatting the entire drive, erasing the machine, and starting over. I am very novice when it comes to MacOS so I have no idea which, if any, backup method would preserve the machine as it is. I had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to put an OS on the thing after our IT dept at work scrapped it. I fixed it (and a few coworkers' machines) by replacing the HDDs with an SSD with MacOS preinstalled from eBay. I would still like to put windows on the machine, as its main purpose is going to be a gaming machine for my girlfriend, who is also unfamiliar with Apple. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's not the end of the world, as the machine still works, but it does suck not being able to use over half of the hard drive. I can send pics/videos if need be to help get a better grasp of the situation/errors I'm seeing. Thanks [link] [comments]
Satechi keyboard going to sleep, help Posted: 24 Jul 2021 03:53 PM PDT Gurus I just purchased a Satechi Bluetooth keyboard and I seems to go to sleep sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. It takes a good few minutes to get the keyboard our of that state so I can start typing again. This was never the case with my application keyboard. Does anyone own this keyboard and have a solution? Looking for a way to listen in on a audio input on Mac Posted: 24 Jul 2021 02:32 PM PDT I have a capture card with a console running to my mac. I would like to use headphones so that I can hear my voice call from the Mac while also listening in to the game on the capture card. The capture card comes in as a virtual mic input, so all I need to do is tap into it. I've tried using QuickTime player to play back, but there's quite a significant delay. Any ideas? Hold my hand as I update from High Sierra! Posted: 24 Jul 2021 02:25 PM PDT Hey all - 2017 Macbook Air user here. I regularly use some 32 bit apps, and held off on updating past High Sierra for years (I realize there was another update I could have done, but I chose not to). The apps have all since updated and are compatible with the current OS. My computer works fine and I never really had a reason to upgrade, but I finally have enough functional annoyances that I'm going to do it. Before doing such a major update, I want to make sure I know what I'm doing, and have a good plan to backtrack if things get hairy. Could someone walk me through the steps to ensure I can preserve this environment and switch back if needed? Can I restore the OS from a full backup to an external drive? And should I just jump to the most current OS? What else am I missing? Thanks all! [link] [comments]
Safari new tab behavior question. Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:13 AM PDT Hi all, whenever I open a new tab on safari, it always defaults to the search bar on the search engine website I use for my homepage (DuckDuckGo), rather than the search bar on the top of safari. Is there a way I can change this? [link] [comments]
Advice on formatting External Hard Disk in Big Sur on M1 Posted: 24 Jul 2021 12:21 PM PDT Hello everyone, I'm after some advice if you can provide, please. So I've finally upgraded my MacBook Pro 2009 to a MacBook Air M1. I did use Tuxera NTFS with my external disk which has been used for just storing my iTunes Library. It worked well for me over the years and as there have been a lot of changes with iTunes changing to be just Music app now, I'm wondering if I'm still best going down this route again, or using another filesystem? I'm after the most stable option. In the past I accepted read-only NTFS out of the box but read-write with Tuxera NTFS. I'd rather not have to install additional bits just to make it work. I'm moving further and further away from Windows as I make this switch to the M1. In fact, in all the time I've had my iTunes Library on external disk, I've never once needed to load it up on a Windows machine. I used NTFS as a just in case and for support across both Windows and Mac if I found I ever needed it while using Windows in Boot Camp. [link] [comments]
Are there any system-wide sound check feature for audio devices? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 12:04 PM PDT Is there a feature or app similar to Apple Music's *soundcheck* but applies to Mac system-wide audio output? What I mean is: I want the sound level to automatically adjust when I switch my audio output from Airpods to a bluetooth speaker, either automatically increase or decrease the sound level depending on the previous bluetooth device's loudness. Big Sur keeps forgetting password to Windows network drive Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:32 AM PDT I'm running Big Sur on a M1 Mac mini and I have mapped some folders from my NAS as well as some folders on a PC running Win 10. Any time I restart the mini, I get prompted to re-enter my password for access to the Windows folders despite previously enabling the option to remember the password in my keychain. On the other hand, my Mac remembers the password to the NAS. Any thoughts out there how to get my Mac to remember the Windows password? [link] [comments]
[help] mac booting into weird disk (Macbook air 2020, big sur beta) Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:07 AM PDT everything was fine before i shut down the computer, but when it boots up again it just shows a grey screen and nothing else. i rebooted, this time holding down the option key, and i noticed that there now is a MacOS Installer disk (or volume?) that has become the default disk that the computer boots into. i was not aware of the creation of this disk and don't know how to get rid of it. any tip? also, i've not been able to install any update of the official Big Sur. i'm on 11.0 (beta), and when i tried to install the update, it tells me that my volume doesn't allow downgrading, despite the fact that this is not a downgrade. i'm stuck on beta forever. please help [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Jul 2021 09:52 AM PDT Are features like this even possible to back port or patch into older models? I just feel like this feature could breathe new life into older iMacs and repurpose them as an "Apple TV" for like a bedroom or something, it's wasted potential and the only reason why I can think of them not supporting older models is because money.
