3 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 93) Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:15 AM PDT Today is Friday. AND my Birthday. So let's make this a great episode of my weekly mobile gaming recommendations, shall we? ;) I hope you'll enjoy it. Support these posts (and my content on YouTube + development of MiniReview) on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/NimbleThor <3 This episode includes a story-driven RPG fighting game, a unique 2D AND 3D puzzler in one, and a huge fantasy survival game. Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below. New to these posts? Check out the first one from 92 weeks ago here. The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is. Let's get to the games:Flat Pack [Game Size: 95 MB] (free)Genre: Puzzler / Platformer / Nitrome - Offline Playable Orientation: Portrait Required Attention: Full tl;dr review: Flat Pack is a level-based platform puzzler by Nitrome that mixes 2D and 3D to create a fun and unique gameplay experience. Each level is made up of a 3D block full of 2D platforms that our character can walk on. To navigate the block, we swipe left or right to move and tap to jump, which we can do continuously to ascend. If we move across one of the edges of the block, it rotates so we can continue moving on the other sides. Our goal is to collect all three stars that are scattered throughout the block in hard-to-get places, and then reach the exit without dying from obstacles and enemies. One of the most impressive aspects of Flat Pack is that each of its 30 levels feel completely unique, forcing us to constantly adapt to new enemies and obstacles. This keeps the game fresh and entertaining. The flat art-style isn't stunning, but it does give the game a unique feel that fits the gameplay. The game is rather hardcore, and a single lethal mistake can force us to start the level all over again. In my experience, most levels can still be completed in relatively few attempts, however. Flat Pack monetizes through occasional ads shown between levels, and a $3.99 iAP to remove these ads. The game is an easy recommendation for anyone fed up with the standard action platformer formula. App Store: Here Slash of Sword 2 [Total Game Size: 413 MB] (free)Genre: RPG / Adventure / Fighting - Offline Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Full tl;dr review: Slash of Sword 2 is a story-driven adventure RPG fighting game with an open world full of NPCs, quests, and sword fighting duels. The game has been made by the Glory Ages – Samurais developer. During a fight, we use our attack, block, and kick buttons, the latter of which can be double-tapped to perform a jump roll perfect for getting out of tough situations. Both attacking and defending cost stamina, which recovers over time and forces us to mix offensive and defensive play. Every match also permanently decreases our total stamina, which we can increase again after the fight is over by consuming food and potions that also recover any lost HP. By completing quests and fights, we earn gold used to unlock new skills and buy better equipment and different types of melee weapons. Gold is a rather scarce resource, but if the campaign becomes too difficult, we can play training matches that also reward us gold we can use in the campaign. The world can be slightly confusing to navigate but features a nice atmospheric art-style with well-made low-poly 3D models. The main drawbacks are that the left-side joystick can take a bit to get used to, and once the campaign has been completed, there isn't much else to do. Thankfully, a multiplayer mode is in the works, according to the developer. Slash of Sword 2 monetizes by showing ads between fights, which can be removed through a $2.99 iAP. There are also a few incentivized ads and iAPs for potions to revive and gear that lets us progress faster. Slash of Sword 2 provides a fun RPG fighting experience with a solid combat system that is worth checking out for fans of the genre. App Store: Here Grim Soul [Game Size: 267 MB] (free)Genre: Survival / Fantasy / RPG - Requires Online Access Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Some tl;dr review: Grim Soul is a popular fantasy-themed survival game by Last Day on Earth developer Kefir! The game has us travel to randomly generated areas via a world map to fight monsters and collect resources used to craft new items, improve our home, and slowly level up to unlock new RPG-style skills and improve our stats. There's a ton of things to craft, and the mystery of never knowing what we'll encounter as we travel from area to area makes for a highly addictive experience. Unfortunately, traveling takes a long time, often 20+ minutes, or requires energy that recovers very slowly over time. This limits how much we can travel without paying and contributes to making the game extremely grindy. The game also deliberately makes us think we meet and fight other players from time to time, but these are all just AI NPCs with look-alike player names. The only actual online element are the guild-based co-op raids. The art-style is okay, but nothing about it stands out, and the dark, grey, color palette makes everything feel slightly washed out. Grim Soul monetizes through iAPs for gear, equipment, resources, and run energy. Ultimately, it's easy to get hooked on the game's fun core gameplay loop, but the energy system is very limiting, and its iAP shop makes it incredibly pay-to-win. With a few tweaks, the game could have been fantastic, so it's truly a wasted opportunity. Looking for a passive roguelite Posted: 01 Jul 2021 08:44 PM PDT I recently downloaded SNKRX and having a lot of fun. I love that my party basically does all the fighting and I just stear them around. Would love an almost one hand play roguelite with a fun upgrade progression system. Are there any other roguelites that have features like this? I'm not looking for a platform we (deadcells) or a strategy game (slay the spire) any thoughts? Edit: Almost like an idle [link] [comments] | ||
