Identified MAJOR culprit for Intel-based Mac poor performance & battery-life. Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:34 AM PDT OneDrive causes serious performance issues & Battery drain!!!Summary:
I'm actually quite shocked by how drastic the results of this where, I'd suggest some of you try it out if you're having issues and use OneDrive. 💖 For the past year or two (Since Big Sur), I've been plagued with poor battery-life and abysmal performance (The typical for Intel-based mac users). My MacBook pro constantly overheats when using Safari with all other programs quitted. Checking 'spindump', console & task Manager didn't point to any specific cause of this issue. But I had a hunch that MAAYBEEE it could be OneDrive, I've yo-yo'd from the App store version and the Original dmg, with the dmg providing better performance (I think this is more attributed to the App Store version being relatively new at the time & maybe some limitations which some with the AppStore version). Anyways, lo and behold I uninstalled OneDrive and OMG, battery-life has more than doubled and my mac doesn't even get remotely warm when watching 4k60fps video or HQ AV1!!!!. Specification:MacBook Pro (13-inch, 256Gb, 2017)OS: Monterey Version 12.0 (21A5248p)CPU: i5-7360U CPU @ 2.30GHzIntegrated Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640Just to clarify, issues occurred on both Big Sur & Monterey. Few other things to note:

Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:45 AM PDT This post is for anyone who, like me, loves tweaking their devices and making them better. I've had my MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) for about 2 months now after upgrading from a 2013 MacBook Air. Here's a list of the apps I use and changes I've made to mine : APPS
Spotlight on steroids. I don't think Alfred needs an introduction. It's definitely one of the first things you need to install on any Mac.
Keeps the menu bar clean at all times.
Life changer ! How Apple should have made the Touch Bar in the first place. I have mine set up so that dragging two fingers on the Touch Bar turns the volume up&down, three fingers changes the brightness and four fingers changes the keyboard brightness. Holding the ⌥ (option) key gives me instant access to shortcuts for window snapping, holding down the ⌘ (command) key shows my Dock, and if I hold down ⌃ (control) & ⌥ (option) at the same time I get the default Mac Touch Bar in case I ever need it. You can also disable BetterTouchTool for specific applications. I borrowed my girlfriend's MBP the other day and literally stared at the Touch Bar for 5 full seconds wondering what the hell was going on 😂. I mainly use BTT for the Touch Bar but it also allows you to customize your trackpad, for example you can set it up so if you Force Touch the bottom left corner your screensaver turns on etc. The customization is truly limitless with BTT.
This is one of those apps that will have you staring at your MacBook in disbelief. It's basically a system-wide audio enhancement app that can be toggled on or off at any time using ⌘ (command) + ⌥ (option) + B. It's loud, crisp and immersive, with or without headphones.
Adds mouse over window previews to the Dock, + quick information and basic controls for music & calendar apps that are on your Dock.
Helps clean, optimize and improve the performance of your MacBook. This app is what you need to remove unnecessary files & plugins that you wouldn't normally remove using Finder. Also, the user interface is beautiful.
Hands dow the best browser imo. Brave has a built-in ad blocker, AND a built-in Tor browser. Great speeds, low RAM consumption, WebTorrent (lets you download torrents directly from the browser without needing to use a standalone client). It also has a few nice touches that make it stand out, like giving you the option to open a page using the Wayback Machine when a 404 not found error is encountered. Last but definitely not least, BAT (Basic Attention Token) : You get paid in crypto to receive ads. ***EDIT*** Here's some of the Extensions I have on Brave : - Picture-In-Picture - uBlock Origin - All Netflix Categories
This is the app that will make you forget about Preview. No stutter, split-view that lets you open different PDF files side by side, plus a large amount of annotation tools (pencil, eraser, a text tool, shapes, stamps, notes). You can also switch to Editing Mode to edit any text by directly clicking on it, replace images, etc. Another feature that feels like magic is dragging & dropping PDF pages from one file to another. Overall, this app is a must-have & was clearly designed to work with the Mac infrastructure.
Amazing e-mail client with a ton of useful features : Smart Inbox (automatically sorts incoming messages into Personal, Notifications, or Newsletters categories), natural language search, Quick Replies, 4 configurable swipe actions, Snooze, Templates... The list goes on ! Oh and since Spark and PDF Expert were both made by the same developer (Readdle), both apps work amazingly well together, allowing you to edit, annotate and sign PDF attachments in a single, integrated, and automated workflow.
Looks and feels incredibly close to a made-by-Apple app. IINA is a great replacement for QuickTime & VLC. CHANGESTERMINAL COMMANDS ( copy & paste into Terminal)
defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier -int 0 && Killall Dock
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock I'd love to know what tweaks other people have done, so feel free to share in the comments !! [link] [comments]

M1 Mac | Parallels Desktop vs UTM Performance Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:52 AM PDT So as the title suggests, I'm interessted in a performance comparison of parallels desktop and UTM when it comes to windows 10 (ARM preview). The only thing that i would use in the vm would be an ide that doesnt need a lot of performance and a feature that makes my macos files being accessable in the windows 10 vm. I also dont need full screen or any other "big feautres" like USB forwarding etc. Normally, i would choose parallels just because of its popularity but i dont want to pay 100€ / 80€ per year for it. I'd be happier with only paying 10€ (or even nothing) for UTM. If you have tried UTM as well as parallels desktop with the windows 10 Arm preview feel free to leave a comment on what would be your recommendation for my use case and what vm software has the better performance. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Volume options for Safari in task bar just disappears when I need it? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:26 AM PDT Sometimes in my task bar it will show volume controls for all the safari tabs that play audio. So I can be in another window and not have to go back to that window to pause the audio. But it seems when I need this feature it disappears and I can't figure out how to get it to come back. The pages usually show up in control center as well, but as of right now they don't. It's like it only happens some of the time. [link] [comments]

New to the Apple - need help with 2007 iMac OSX installation Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:45 AM PDT Hi reddit. My school threw out their old hardware and we could take whatever we wanted for a small donation. I've never had any apple device before, just Windows and Linux. Also English is not my native language so beware of some grammar mistakes and Google-translated program names. I'm sorry My school had all of their accounts, files and programs still on the computers so what I did, was boot into disk utility and format the hard drive for a clean installation of Yosemite. I know that Macs can download and install the system if they have none on it so I figured that would be the easiest and "cleanest" way to get rid of all unwanted stuff and have an fresh system. After the wipe I tried to install Yosemite but Mac wanted me to log in with an Apple ID to download and install the system. I didn't have an Apple ID before so I went to my laptop and created one. When I wanted to log in on the iMac it asked me to type in the verification code. When I created my Apple ID I had to also type in my phone number for 2FA which I can't turn off. So when I tried to log in, I got a 6 digit code to my phone but the installer has no field to type it in. I tried to type it into the password field, I tried to type in the password with the 2FA code and other variants, but none of that works. So as of now I have now way to re-install OSX back on the Mac, and it's just a beautiful brick standing around in the middle of my living room. Is there any way to install the system on the Mac if I have no other Apple device and the Mac and the system is no longer supported? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Time Machine Backup "Not Enough Space" Issue Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:21 AM PDT I have this weird issue with Time Machine and cannot figure it out. My 2015 iMac runs the latest macOS 11.4, has a 2TB drive in, about 1TB of which is in use. It backs up to a 3TB external drive. However, the drive constantly runs out of space and complains that there is not enough space left. There is only one 3TB partition on the external drive and it is not used for anything else. It APFS formatted with one volume. It currently hold no more than 1 backup, so it's not like old ones are being purged. It seems to not be able to even fit a second one on there. Anyone have any idea what to look into? Could it be APFS-related? I am out of ideas where to look, so any input is much appreciated. [link] [comments]
Samsung T7 Touch - Relock without unplugging Posted: 26 Jun 2021 09:52 PM PDT I have a Samsung T7 Touch SSD 1TB which has a fingerprint scanner on it. When you plug it into any computer, you have to use the fingerprint scanner to decrypt the SSD. However, there doesn't appear to be any re-lock option on the Samsung Portable SSD software to re-lock the device, so the only way I have managed to do this is by physically unplugging the device. Ejecting the device using Finder, and remounting via Disk Utility doesn't relock the device. So it appears that all power needs to be removed from the SSD before it relocks. Any ideas? Mouse scroll wheel doesn't work in Catalina macOS 10.15.7 Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:05 AM PDT As in the object, my mouse scroll doesn't work anymore on Catalina 10.15.7. It was a gradual "lost": first I noticed it wasn't fluid as usual, then stopped to work. Sometimes, when I startup my mac, it works for some reasons, then stop again and remain locked...I tried it to turn off, restart system, unpair and pair again, reset: no luck. The mouse is perfectly working on WIN systems. Can't try it on other macs anyway. My mouse is a Microsoft Sculpt. Any advice would be much appreciated! Have a nice day! [link] [comments]
BetterSnapTool not working since 11.2.3 Posted: 27 Jun 2021 02:40 AM PDT Hi all, Since upgrading to 11.4 from 11.2.3 (I had to skip 11.3 but that's a other post in itself) BetterSnapTool has stopped tiling with does correctly, when you drag a window into a tiling position it places the centre of the window into the edge of the screen instead the left or side side however the window size is correct, so you should be able move it into place right? Wrong, when you drag the window out of it's strange position it puts itself back to how it was before you initially tiled the window. I tried on another system that has 11.3 and it does the same thing but systems running 11.2.3 are fine. I'm on the latest update of BST (I'm not sure how many use BST these days, Magnet and others are much better so that's what people get.) Doesn't seem to be a known issue. [link] [comments]

How to make a Big Sur bootable USB drive using windows? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 01:33 AM PDT So I'm trying to install Big Sur on my MacBook Pro 2015 without access to a working MacOS computer. I've got a .dmg of big Sur and transmac (the software mentioned everywhere) but it didn't work when booting my MacBook holding alt, the usb drive wasn't shown. If instead I load a win 10 iso with the software Rufus my MacBook detects it no problem. Where do I go from here? [link] [comments]
Upgraded to macOS Big Sur 11.4 on my MBPro amid 2014, now its stutters and lags Posted: 26 Jun 2021 03:35 PM PDT A quick google search returned a shed load of reddit threads and this: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/666661 I am yet to figure out a solution. When I use my trackpad every 15 seconds it will freeze, and then go back to normal again. I understand the threads I read and the replies to the forum above are probably from version 11.1. I thought by 11.4 these issues would be solved? Any help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
Is there a list of iOS apps that can be installed on an M1 Mac? Posted: 26 Jun 2021 04:43 PM PDT So, I recently got a M1 MacBook Air through work and I've been trying out some iOS apps & games. Is there a definitive list of which iOS apps can be installed on an M1 Mac via the Mac App Store? Or is there a way to search for just iOS apps? I know that there is the Apple Silicon Games site but, it's strictly for games. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]
