    First Time Macbook Air Buyer

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:40 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I am looking to get the 2020 M1 Macbook Air. I heard that they will be releasing a new one later this year or early next year. I'm on a tight budget, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to wait for the new one to come out so the 2020 one sells for cheaper? Thank you in advance. Edit: I'm in Canada!

When the m1 16" and m1 14"will get released do you think they'll sell out immediately? Is this what happened when the m1 13" was released?

New MacBook Air M1 battery draining when on standby. Still no fix?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:33 PM PDT

I've seen a bunch of threads of users complaining about their M1 MBAs draining overnight, and a bunch of comments saying "turn off power nap". But there has not been a power nap option in quite a while in Big Sur.

I don't have anything plugged in (USB or Monitor) and I don't have any bluetooth items connected, yet every time I open my laptop in the morning, it's down 5-10%.

Has anyone figured out a fix yet?

    Buying a new macbook

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:29 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have decided to get myself a new macbook. I haven't been using Macbook since 2011, so I'm kinda thrilled to see how it has developed.

I'm kind of stuck in my decision making, but at the same time I am very eager to get it ASAP. :)

I will of course be waiting until WWDC21 before I pull the trigger, but it will either be the MBA M1 16gb or the new MBP 14". The redesign, functional keys instead of touch bar, and extra ports would be amazing. However, if it wont be released until 2022, or very late this year - I'll go for the MBA instead.

I'll be using it docked most of the time at my desk. I have a couple of USB peripherals in use (webcam, light bar, keyboard, mouse), as well as 2x external monitors (might downsize to one, in case of using DisplayLink). In order to keep flexibility with these peripherals, I thought a dock would be neat to have.

Do you have any recommendations for a docking station?

Maybe any tips for other nice software to get? (I'm a huge fan of PowerToys on windows for example)

    Thanks!

First time using Mac. Question about a few apps, and I don't understand Rosetta on M1

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:23 PM PDT

Well, there's lots of things I don't quite get yet, i've only been using the laptop for like an hour.

I'm trying to install some of the programs I used on windows, and i'm trying to use only apps compatible with M1. AFAIK, Rosseta makes apps not ported to M1 work. So, acording to isapplesiliconready.com VLC is fully compatible with M1, but when I try to install run it, it prompts me to install Rosetta as a dependency. So it isn't compatible then?

Also, I use google drive synced a lot, but it also prompts me to install Rosetta. Are there any native options to have my files synced?

What Should I Do With My 2013 Retina Pro

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:45 PM PDT

I am looking for advice on what I should do with my still fully functioning 2013 Pro with 40GB of Harddrive left, 40% battery life(about 2 hours full charge off charger), speakers very distorted, and 4g of memory with 1-.65gb to spare.

Running Catalina 10.15.7 and have tried upgrading but my computer crashed or almost bricked in the process several times over the last year or so. Either when a new update comes out or randomly wont boot back up from the dark loading screen with apple logo.

Now recently, restarting the computer takes about 5-8min for the progress bar to finish and then signing in takes about 8-10min because of the beach ball spinning. Typing in system passwords to grant access or anything else also takes about 5 minutes also.

What are my options other than just buying a brand new MacBook? This computer has been great for me all these years but is it in it's final days?

Would like to hear if people just take it to Apple and tell them to upgrade it with what is needed to continue another 5-10 years?

M1 Macbook Pro 95% battery health after 37 cycles.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 05:18 PM PDT

Coconut battery currently shows 95% health (4857 mah / 5103 mah) with only 37 cycles. Normally this wouldn't concern me too much except on my last Macbook (12" M5) it was also dropping health rather early in it's life and by 120 cycles health was in the 70% range and I was getting a service battery warning. Not looking forward to the same thing happening. Is anyone else seeing the same thing?

First time buying a Mac, Will the M1 Air Last?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:22 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I'll be a college student this fall and I really need a laptop that's worth the investment, meaning it'll definitely last me 3-4 years or more without expensive repairs or software issues. Since Apple is one of the most reliable laptop brands out there, I decided to look into macs.

What I need to know is how long the base model M1 MacBook Air (8GB RAM) will last me. I'm concerned over the SSD issues that were all over the internet a few months ago, claiming these macs will stop functioning several years early. Also any software incompatibilities with Windows apps. I'll be using this Mac for casual purposes, just for school work, browsing the web, Netflix, occasional games of Minecraft (would also love to hear from anyone who's played on the M1), etc.

Hearing from owners of these Macs or i5 Intel Macs would really help me finalize my decision. It's either a new M1 8GB Air or a refurbished Intel i5 8GB Air.

    BLOATED BATTERY

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:33 PM PDT

My Macbook Pro 15 2015 battery was replaced by Apple in 2019 due to bloating. Now, it has started again to bloat for no apparent reason. Can anybody shed light on what could be the reason? I plugged in all the time due to nature of work.

    Dell D6000 docking station and a 2014 MBP. How can I connect the 2 as I don’t have usb-c?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:30 PM PDT

I have access to a d6000 docking station and a 2014 MBP. I don't have usb-c on the MacBook though. The docking station does have an adapter from usb-c to usb 3, would that work?

    MBA 16gb/512ssd OR MBP 16gb/256ssd..?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:29 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm looking to get myself my first MacBook. I hope to broaden my horizons with it and use it for educational purposes. I'm currently searching for my career path, and I want a laptop that'll allow me to do so and hopefully last me a few years too.

The price difference (with Student discount) is very little between the two specs I put in the title.

Apart from the MBP having a fan, and 100nits more than the MBP... I need some help making an educated guess.

I hope to experiment with Video editing, running DJ programs, maybe even coding, some light gaming, and all round standard office use. I don't want to be limited as such.

I have also thought about waiting for the 2021 releases.. I am very grateful for any advice.

    Thank you all in advance.

    Macbook Pro 17" (early 2009) in 2021

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 05:41 AM PDT

Hello, I'm hoping for some advice. I am looking into buying a 17" macbook pro with 8gb ram, core 2 duo 2 66ghz and ssd drive as an only computer in 2021, do you think it's a good idea? I can get it for 250€. I'm a student but I don't think I mind the large format for portability and I'm curious if it would be powerful enough for basic photoshop, indesign.. mostly office and document browsing though.

Hope to hear from you.. Thanks

New Macbook Pro M1 and a cheap hub?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:29 AM PDT

So my new Macbook is about arrive today. I stille have a cheap dongle that used to work fine with my old Macbook Pro (2018). My question is will this dongle work with my new Pro? Read some stuf about dongles/hubs bricking the M1 Macbooks but also read that Big Sur 11.2.2. fixed this?

Can anyone confirm this? Can I safely use this dongle or not even risk it?

We need a 2021 version of 12-inch MacBook!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:28 AM PDT

I can't begin to explain how much I'm in love with this form factor! I recently got the 2017 model used, with brand new topcase and I am so happy with my purchase! However, it is flawed and I'm probably going to sell it in couple of months as there are couple of issues I can't get past.

    1. The Core m3 is fine for all the basic tasks people who buy a laptop this size would use it for, but when you consider its original price ($1299), it's just ridiculous to put a processor this underpowered in it.
    2. The 480p camera was an embarassment in 2017 and it still is. I mean even the 720p ones are, but at least they are HD.
    3. The butterfly keyboard doesn't bother me personally, but it's pretty unreliable with all its issues.
    4. One USB port is extremely limiting since you practically can't plug anything else your laptop it while it's charging.
    5. The bezels could be smaller, although I'm okay with them as is.

So, if Apple ever releases the refreshed version of this laptop, they NEED to: 1. Put an M1 inside. Maybe some smaller 6-core CPU/7-core GPU version if the regular 8-core CPU/7-core GPU version they used in the latest 2020 Air can't fit. 2. Upgrade the front camera to AT LEAST 720p. 3. Put the Magic Keyboard in it. They have ditched the butterfly switches since the 2019 16" Pro and 2020 13" Pro and Air, so they must do so in this model as well. 4. Add an extra USB port, either next to the 3,5mm port or the already existing USB one, but the two USB ports are a must in 2021!

Bezels aren't the huge deal IMO, even tho it would be nice to shrink them a bit.

What do you think? Should this model be revived or are the ultrathin 12-inch laptops a thing of the past?

    macbook pro + 4k monitor

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:20 AM PDT

    Hello!

I recently bought a Dell U2720Q 4k monitor to enhance my music production a bit.

My MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) however has issues with the fans going crazy loud when I tend to open bigger project files in Ableton. This is the case with or without my 4K monitor.
My goal is to be able to use my new monitor to the fullest. I didn't buy it to use it scaled to 1920...

Currently I'm using the standard USB C - USB C cable that came with the monitor, I heard some thing about how a different cable might help but for now I'm not exactly sure if that's the issue.

I suppose my only options are:
    A) some different crazy high-end cable
    B) an eGPU (blackmagic, Puck RX 560...?)

What is the best thing I can do to get the fullest out of my setup?

    Thanks in advance!
