Here is why you have a “group.system_default” file on your Desktop with MacOS 11.3 Posted: 04 May 2021 06:28 PM PDT For anyone who has upgraded from MacOS 11.2.3 to MacOS 11.3, you will notice a Relocated Items folder on your desktop. You will also find a "groups.system_default" in there. If you compare the "group.system_default" to "/etc/group", you will notice that "trusted" is missing from "/etc/group". That is the only difference; unless you edited these files yourself… So, why is this happening? Well, I was able to acquire older versions of Big Sur and it turns out that in 11.2 and older, Apple did not include "trustd" in "/etc/group". This changed as of MacOS 11.3. And so, when the upgrade to 11.3 happens, the installation takes the safe route of not touching your existing file and puts the replacement onto your Desktop (actually just symbolically links the folder that contains the file…). Do a fresh install of 11.3 and you will find that "/etc/group" contains "trustd". Do a fresh install of 11.2 or 11.2.3 and you will find that "trustd" is missing. System defaults changed…Apple could have handled this better. Now, does this "/etc/group" file really matter? No, it does not. A couple of MacOS versions ago, Apple switched to using OpenDirectories to handle users and groups. Some things left in the "/etc" folder are due to the Unix roots of MacOS. Do you need to worry about this file? No. Remove the Relocated Items folder from your Desktop. If you didn't know anything about this before, then chances are that none of the above is of importance to you and you can ignore changes to the underpinnings of MacOS. UPDATE: After upgrading from 11.2.3 to 11.3, I went ahead and replaced my "/etc/group" with the "group.system_default" version. I got rid of the Relocated Items folder. I then upgraded to 11.3.1 today and the Relocated Items folder did not come back. [link] [comments]
If you didn't know you can run Windows apps for free Posted: 04 May 2021 08:54 PM PDT Many people do not know this so I decided to share it. You do not have to buy a Parallels and Windows license to run Windows apps. You can download and use the FOSS WineHQ. It really does work. The caveat is that not all apps run well you have to check their AppDB if your app works and if its not listed you can try testing it yourself. Anything rated Bronze or Garbage is as you expect won't be a pleasant to use. I suggest you buy a copy of CrossOver which is WineHQ packaged in a nice and friendly manner with technical support. For every purchase part of the sale goes to WineHQ's development. WineHQ works on both MacOS and Linux. Here is a mind boggling video of a Linux system running Cyberpunk 2077 via WineHQ shared from /r/wine_gaming . EDIT: I just wanted to make clear that Wine runs Windows apps as if native. Virtual Machines runs a whole OS over your current OS fighting for RAM and CPU not to mention having to install another whole OS on your HDD. Might not be an issue if you are running a beefy iMac or Mac Pro. [link] [comments]
URGENT: Can’t open important Word Doc (MAC OS Big Sur 11.1) Posted: 05 May 2021 12:11 AM PDT Spent 3 days typing an important outline, saved it on my Mac. Saved it several times as I was going through it. It's showing in "Recent Documents" in word, under the name that I saved it as, but it gives me an error when I try to open it I have the path to it: /private/var/folders/4y/nkzqdmf506d10r6l_8fkw4_w0000gn/T/com.microsoft.Outlook/CRIMINAL LAW FINAL EXAM OUTLINE.docx But, when I go to the path, it isn't there. I tried going to the AutoRecovery folder (I may not be going to the right one), but the file is not in there either as far as I can tell. Desperately trying to figure out a way to access this doc. Rental Computer Return: Erase Hard Drive Posted: 05 May 2021 01:01 AM PDT I rented a Macbook Pro that has macOS Mojave on it and before I return it, I need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS. Unfortunately, I cannot find the Macintosh HD icon in the sidebar of Disk Utility after starting up again and pressing Command + R. The only file that appears in the internal is: Apple SSD AP0512M Media > Container disk2> Preboot. When I am in my user account and I display the hard disk on my desktop, an icon that looks like the Macintosh HD one appears, but it is called "Preboot". The rental company suggested I reach out to Apple tech support , but because the item is a rental I do not have access to free Apple tech support. Is "Preboot" the one I should actually erase? Maybe someone else who rented the laptop before named it that? IDK. Any advice would be very helpful. [link] [comments]
Choppy Animations on MBP 16inch. Posted: 04 May 2021 03:34 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro 16inch 2019 i9, and I'm experiencing choppy animations when the laptop is using integrated Intel graphics card. It goes away only when I switch to AMD Radeon Pro ; Tried reducing transparency and motion from Accessibility, but still experiencing the same issue. I'm currently running MacOS Big Sur (11.3). Is there any fix for the same? [link] [comments]

Trouble with Google Drive Desktop on M1 Mac mini Posted: 04 May 2021 08:08 PM PDT I love my new M1 Mac mini 16gb, but the compatibility issues with Google Drive for desktop have been absolutely destroying my workflow. I keep getting this error box every once in a while. It seems to be triggered by me saving Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop files, or just by navigating the folder structures themselves on my shared drive with my team. I've never encountered this issue on my Intel Macbook and it's driving me nuts. Anyone have the same problem as me? [link] [comments]
What is Mac OS's hidden text-to-speech app called, and what system folder/file is it hidden in? Posted: 04 May 2021 07:51 PM PDT About eight years ago I was digging deep into my mac pro's system files and found a hidden text-to-speech app. It was unbelievable for how low-key but fully editable its results were. If you typed in a string of text, it would output via the simple GUI a kind of log chart showing the pitch inflection it gave to each word's unique pronunciation, which you could edit like an EQ slider to completely change the emphasis and inflection that the generated voice would apply to a given syllable. You could choose from a plethora of voices and, if you had the patience, could make the results sound markedly different and eerily humanlike compared to how we've been conditioned with Siri to "know" how that voice "should" sound. I copied the app into my utilities folder and messed around with it every now and again, but eventually life happened and I had better things to do. I've since upgraded and/or formatted my OS several times over, but can't seem to find ANY documentation online that would lead me back to finding that specific *.app file. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and where I might be able to find it again? I'm pretty sure I was digging around in library audio folders when I found it, and it may have been nested in some type of archive that you have to secondary click and "show the contents" of, so it might not necessarily show up on a surface level file search. It wasn't a script or a unix executable either, it had its own dedicated icon and an *.app filetype, and IIRC was contained alongside several other oddly specific utilitarian apps with very niche purposes. Their hidden location seemed at odds with how useful I considered they must be for the people who would, I assume, have some use for them, hence their existence. I've been trying for about a year to dig it up again, any help would be awesome. Given that this was in 2013/14, I would have to assume I was using anywhere from OS 10.7 to 10.10, if this gives any clues to official software package inclusion or removal throughout the years. Desperate for help with updating Mac after wiping it Posted: 04 May 2021 07:08 PM PDT Hello, Long story short is I've tried everything to fix my Mac but it still won't work. It all started with trying to install Big Sur. I've already wiped it, was sent back to installing Catalina, and now I am getting various errors such as "MacOS could not be installed on your computer. the installer resources were not found". Any ideas?? [link] [comments]

After Update to Big Sur 11.3. battery drain and heating up while being shut down Posted: 04 May 2021 10:21 AM PDT Hey, I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2019 (i7 8th gen., 16GB, 512GB, 4 Thunderbolt ports) After I updated to Big Sur 11.3. my MacBook started draining the battery and heating up after I turned it off (Apple Logo->Shutdown). On the next morning battery was completly empty. Google didn't helped and only got back with overheating tips or battery save tips. TL;DR My MacBook is off and is still heating up and drain the battery. I know update 11.3.1 is ready. Will update tomorrow. Hope you can help me, thanks in advance! :) [link] [comments]

Disable keyboard shortcut that re-organizes my desktop? Posted: 04 May 2021 03:15 PM PDT I use my desktop to organize files I need for immediate work. I use preview a lot and there's a conflict with view keyboard shortcuts that means if I forget for one second I'm clicked into Finder and not Preview it moves all my files and folders to the right of the desktop and I have to stop and move them all back. Is there a way to disable Control-Option-1 and other desktop "cleanup" shortcuts that move all my shit around? I'm running Catalina. [link] [comments] |
