Unpopular Overdramatized Opinion. Some “pro” iPad users are trying to ruin the concept of the iPad

    Posted: 31 May 2021 03:53 AM PDT

Apple touted the iPad as a computer replacement. In the infamous commercial, the girl asks "what's a computer?".

IMO, this shows that apple doesn't want the iPad to be a computer, but a product that is close enough in functionality which would allow it to replace a computer. This doesn't mean the iPad has to mirror a computer 1:1.

But the iPad can only do this for a certain group of iPad users. I don't think power users or pro Mac users are a part of this group. What I found interesting, was that the actor in the commercial was a child. Someone who wouldn't necessarily need the pro features of a Mac. The younger generation of users who do everything on Google suite. This is who apple is targeting. Regardless of the processor IMO.

Of course some things need to be fixed/improved on the iPad. Multitasking, external displays and file management for example.

But some users are asking for terminal, Mac apps and even full blown Mac OS. That's not the point of the iPad. It's not supposed to be a computer. But its own standalone product.

Of course I don't know the future or what apple has planned for the iPad. We'll see what features we get at WWDC in a week. But I don't think we're going to see some of the features some power users on this sub want. And IMO, some of those features would ruin the concept of the iPad. A touch friendly, easy to use, portable os. Not a computer, not a phone. But an in between.

Tdrl: the iPad is a computer replacement. Which means it doesn't have to mirror a computer 1:1 in terms of functionality. Let the iPad stay a user friendly, touch friendly, portable os and leave the power user stuff to the Mac.

Edit: it's very interesting because people seem to be split pretty 50/50 on the topic. Seems like half of people on this sub are happy with the iPad as a light productivity device and others wants a more power user computer os.

New set up feat. Earl — don’t know how I ever went without this keyboard

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:27 AM PDT

Thunderbolt Display works! Speakers, Ethernet, USB work as they should. iSight camera and FireWire are no go’s. Here’s hoping iPadOS 15 enables true external display support!

    Loving my new iPad Cover!

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:24 AM PDT

Super impressed by the 8th gen iPad. With a keyboard, it feels like a full laptop experience. Just love how this Logitech keyboard doesn’t need Bluetooth connection & doesn’t need to be charged.

The iPad ruined it for me

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:27 PM PDT

The iPad ruined it for me

    MacBook Air M1, iPad Pro 11" M1

Tl;dr iPadOS is a joy to use, and spoiled me, that anything else feels slow, less optimized and less fun. Also for me, 11" is the best size to use

For the last few years I've had an iPad pro by my side, first the 11" 2017 (with the thick bezels), and then the iPad Pro 2018 11". I've used this as my daily driver

After the announcement for the iPad Pro 2021 12.9" Mini Led. It bummed me that it wasn't available for the little brother. But those few inches surely wouldn't matter, right? The only thing that was missing was a (even) better screen. Of course I've instantly pre ordered it, and I couldn't wait.

    iPad Pro 12.9" M1

    Pros:

    • The colors were great, bright in direct sunlight.
    • The blacks were deep, OLED deep.
    • Screen real estate is huge

    Cons:

    • I started to see blooming (this is something i had in mind, but didn't expect it to be this big.
    • Also I'm so used to using a 11", that the 12.9" was actually too big. Didn't think this would matter as much as it did, and made me use my iPad less.

Conclusion: The 12.9" is great for someone who is used to the size. The blooming is expected. But the device is too big for my liking.

I bought a 11" M1 again, and on the same day the MacBook Air M1 was also on sale.

    MacBook Air M1

    Pros:

    • Full fledged OS
    • Device starts fasts, also out of sleep mode
    • Optimized apps for M1 are fast

    Cons:

So far it seems like complaining, but hold up. Since I've bought both the MacBook and the iPad, I could use them side-to-side. And since the iPad was my loyal size again, I didn't have any complaints about the device for now.

The iPad is fun. This is my conclusion, and I'll explain why.

    • Scrolling through anything I throw at it, is buttery smooth, this is not only the 120hz display, but it's the software
    • Switching between apps is fast, really fast. I've had Divinity 2 open in the background for a day, while watching YouTube and Reddit, and the next day i went to open the game again, it was just standing there, loaded, in-game.
    • iPadOS so fast has been amazing, the things I do the most. It feels faster than a normal OS. The applications are fully optimized for the screen and hardware, which makes the device fly
    • The thing is easy and versatile. Scrolling on a web page? Open it in portrait mode. Drawing? Lay it flat on the table. Watching something? Put it in landscape mode.
    • You grab it and play. And since it's only 11", you can easily take it anywhere you go.

Sure, it's not a real computer, not it doesn't need to be. When you know it's downsides, and know how to work around it, it's the only device you will need (okay, not the only device, since I'll still keep my Windows gaming rig, but you know, Apple and gaming). I will happily use the iPad. And cannot wait for what WWDC got for us.

The iPad ruined it for me, I cannot use another OS that is this much fun again, I am spoiled. And that is a good thing

The iPad ruined it for me, I cannot use an other OS that is this much fun again, I am spoiled. And that is a good thing

iPad Air 4: Power rating when using the iPad as an external battery?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 07:45 AM PDT

I've noticed that, if I plug my phone to the iPad's USB-C connector, my phone charges. Neat. However, I wonder what is the voltage and amperage offered by the iPad in these instances. I googled, but I couldn't find any relevant result. Do you guys know how much power the iPad outputs when used as an external battery?

    iPad Pro M1

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:46 AM PDT

I really hope this device gets popular because if it does we can finally start seeing more m1 native apps.

Would love to use same apps on my iPad and MacBook.

I'm just imagining being out on a shoot, loading footage on iPad and editing with final cut and then when I get home moving over to MacBook to finish.

It's a really bad example but I'm just super excited to have streamlined work flow (hopefully)

Question about iPad Pro 12.9 Storage

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:02 AM PDT

Recently I've been getting into digital art and procreate. When my iPad arrived and was messing around with it, I kind of started to get doubts about whether the storage option I selected was the best choice. If anyone else is a digital artist using CSP or procreate would you recommend I return my 128 gb iPad pro for a 256 gb model, or should I be fine with the amount I have right now? (I'm planning on keeping this year's new iPad model for several years at least.)

Did the Magic Keyboard take away the tablet experience for you?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:54 AM PDT

I've been eyeing the Magic Keyboard since the release but was always on edge cause price (should have snagged it when it was $199) and the fact that I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro.

Im wondering for those with the Magic Keyboard (specifically those with an 11 inch / Air) does the keyboard take away that tablet experience for you?

Does the 11" M1 iPad Pro heat up in Notability?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:28 PM PDT

I have a 2020 11" iPad Pro, and when i'm using Notability, it heats up considerably. It heats up much more than it does when charging, so much that i feel concerned my iPad will malfunction. I don't know the cause of this, and i could not find a solution. What i wanna know is if anyone else with any iPad model experience the same heating issue with Notability, and if the new 11 inch M1 behaves any different?

Controlling Intelligent Lighting from and IPad

    Posted: 31 May 2021 07:47 AM PDT

Hello everyone, so I work for a wedding event company and we setup the DJ booth for weddings and other events. As of now I am just a roadie/sound tech and setup all the audio and lighting (DMX intel lights) and video. They want me to become a light tech as well which pays significantly more, however I would need a windows laptop to do this as the software they use only runs on windows. However I am wondering if anyone has any experience controlling DMX lighting from an IPad, I was browsing the App Store and saw some really cool apps like Photon which seem to do everything I need but I'm wondering what sort of hookups I would need to have my IPad interface with DMX wires. I have the Magic Keyboard and IPad Pro and love this setup as my mobile computer and would love to have this as my technician setup as well. So I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this before I bring up the idea to my company.

    Database App

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:25 PM PDT

Looking for a good database app. I currently use HanDBase which has pretty much been abandoned. I previously used it on Android, but switched to Momento which isn't available on iPadOS or iOS. IIRC I previously used Smartlist to Go back in my original iOS, but don't see it anywhere, but I could be mistaken. Thank you in advance.

    Help with AppleCare/Keyboard

So i just got the new ipad Pro 12.9". It says on apple care that it will provide care for an apple branded keyboard. Will this support the old magic keyboard or only the new one, as the old one works with my ipad. Thanks a lot.

Would you buy an iPadOS 2n1?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:51 PM PDT

I'm talking about a legitimate dock that fully turns your iPad into a laptop. Something like the surface laptop 2-in-1s, except being actually good tablets.

    Properly weighted.

Additional ports, like more usb-c, sd card reader etc

Extra battery that increases device longevity and keeps the iPad at the perfect charge level to prolong battery health.

    Backlit keys.

And a magnetic dock similar to the current magic keyboard so I can easily remove it.

I just recently got my first iPad and if I could turn it not just into "a" laptop, but a "good" laptop, (you know something I can actually use on my lap without it being too heavy and falling over) I would do it in a heart beat. I can almost do everything work related on it now super easily. I say almost because an actual laptop dock that isn't trying to also be a carrying case ain't working for me how it was dreamt up as.

I would legitimately consider selling my new M1 MBP to someone that needs a more fully fleshed out operating system if I could get my hands on the above mentioned dock. I don't care if it's twice as thick as a MBP, the versatility it offers is more than worth it. Most people don't need all of macOS or windows I for computing, but they do need an actual clamshell computer that isn't just a fancy kickstand with a keyboard attached. Although tbh, I can see my wanting to get rid of an apple product as a reason as to why this accessory, no matter how expensive, may not be made.

    What do you think?

    The Perfect iPad

    Posted: 31 May 2021 02:41 AM PDT

    The Perfect iPad

Loving my M1 iPad Pro 11 inch a ton. While my 2018 iPad 12.9" with Magic Keyboard was amazing, the M1 Macbook Pro had such good battery life, and the 2018 iPad had such inferior battery life (I'd get maybe 5 hours of watching YouTube while I worked before the battery would be dying), so the two devices weren't a good match. The larger iPad with keyboard was also way too heavy.

    My most common use situation

The 11" iPad is way better for my needs. Super fast, with booting after a restart about 10 seconds. It feels so compact compared to the old model. Instead of the clunky Magic keyboard, the Satechi Slim X1 keyboard is outstanding, and supports multiple devices, too. I can pull this out of my bag when using it in a coffee shop, though I am using it for YouTube or Reddit and not as a Mac replacement, as the M1 Macbook Pro is so good.

(For anyone who wants to avoid getting a dedicated keyboard for your iPad, I was surprised how good Type2Phone works. You can basically use your Mac as the keyboard for your iPad if you always have your Mac with you.)

Battery: as expected, Apple over-delivered here, once I can watch 5-6 hours of YouTube and still have 45% battery left easily.

Speakers: much, much better than I expected them to be. Watching anime for my blogging on the new iPad is outstanding.

An example of the magnetic power adapters inserted

If anyone is curious, the iPad works with the magnetic adapters that are all over Amazon, allowing us to have only one cable. Some Apple products refuse to work with the magnetic adapters (the AirPods Pro do not work, and AirPods Max work if you reset the headphones before charging them). The magnetic power system can't charge anything power hungry like a Macbook, but iOS devices are fine.

    AhaStyle Apple Pencil sleeves?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 09:13 PM PDT

Has anyone tried the duotone style Apple Pencil sleeves from AhaStyle? I heard the cap slides off here and there, is that true? And also the cat ear sleeves from Hydream? I'm specifically looking at those because I hold the pencil really low and most sleeves don't go that low.

I had the pineapple one from them and I returned it because the cap would slide off and it was annoying to put it back on.
