    MacBook Pro (mid 2012 )

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:53 PM PDT

Hi guys , Am I the only one who feels that eventho this MacBook looked good but had the shittiest processor, my MacBook was almost always slow since I purchased it back in 2015 , the folders took almost 2 mins to open , one day it stopped working I had to send it for servicing and ended up losing all my data , then suddenly the trackpad stopped working , it was hell tho it t functioned for good 6 years. The hardware was amazing but the software and basic functionality was crap . Tho I managed to sell it and ended up buying the new MacBook Air (M1 2020 ) today but I was wondering was this the issue with every MacBook Pro mid 2012 or was mine a special case . Need to know for closure😂

Macbook Air M1 Battery Life 'Time on Battery' vs 'Screen Time' vs 'Screen on Usage'

Macbook Air M1 Battery Life 'Time on Battery' vs 'Screen Time' vs 'Screen on Usage'

I've been getting mixed battery life with my MBA M1 8GB memory, 8Core GPU, 512GB. Best I achieved (100% to 0%) was 13.5 hrs, worst 6 hrs.

Decided this time I'll track battery life with primarily just using Safari, so very light use, about 6 tabs open, no other apps open, few short youtube videos played, few downloads, brightness 50%. I'm at 50% battery now, but reading the available sources that tell me how much time I have spent on battery up until this point since last charge, it is not not straight forward and different per source. My question is, what is the most accurate source here out of the ones shown below, and why are they all different?

    1. Activity Monitor - Time on Battery

    https://preview.redd.it/6ovvbtiyzdx61.png?width=1814&format=png&auto=webp&s=debc51529afa11fcd0b34ded9068309239cad79d

According to this I'm on battery for 8:01hrs at 50% charge left.

Definition I've read for 'time on battery': The elapsed time that you've been powering the Mac from the battery.

    2. Screen Time

    https://preview.redd.it/1gh0gypl0ex61.png?width=972&format=png&auto=webp&s=38bc6046a481f04ab5b305ccaf6af16dd4dddae4

    https://preview.redd.it/pek5copo0ex61.png?width=978&format=png&auto=webp&s=b31f79bf5dca8c295f14da6086c14c6df3f6d9ff

Took my mac off the charger at 3:25pm May 4, which according to this view gives me the following screen time on battery:

    - May 4: about 330 minutes or 5.5 hrs (Deduct about 2.3hrs from the 7h57m, since the morning till 3:25pm was on running on charger)

    - May 5: 189 minutes or 3.15 hrs

So total time according to screen time since last charge = 519 Minutes or 8.65hrs

    3. Battery Screen On Usage

    https://preview.redd.it/ki86kbkz1ex61.png?width=1306&format=png&auto=webp&s=daafeb0bc3f2834166f23d960e0870d085b63906

    https://preview.redd.it/dd7t0fu22ex61.png?width=1320&format=png&auto=webp&s=28ac42945e2bab9867561e0db8266009f9ad0d23

According to 'screen on usage' under battery:

    - May 4 (Tue): 6.3hrs (but need to subtract the time used on that day prior to unplugging, as mentioned above, about 2.3 hrs ---> 6.3hrs - 2.3hrs = 4hrs

    - May 5 (Wed): 2.3hrs

So total according to screen on usage info would be 4hrs + 2.3 hrs = 6.3hrs

1 or 2 are very close but vastly different to 3. What to use? Thanks!

Which is the better processor for music production

    Posted: 05 May 2021 05:49 AM PDT

My current Mac is has a 2.3 ghz intel core i5 with only 128 G of storage.

I'm looking at trading it in to get a MacBook Pro that has a 1.4 ghz quad core 8th generation intel core i5 turbo boost up to 3.9ghz with 128mb of EDram and 256 G of storage.

I know the second option here has a lot more numbers and words than the first but I literally know fuck all about composters. I tried googling and read for like a half hour and still don't know.

Could you wonderful smart people help me and tell me which one is better? Should I trade in for the second option or keep my current Mac? Thanks!

    Case/Cover for MBA M1?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 07:58 PM PDT

I'm trying to purchase a case for the Macbook Air M1 but I can't seem to find a cheaper one that has good reviews on Amazon. Anyone have a case that works really well for them?

Ex. The mosiso cases look good but people are saying they don't fit well.

MacBook Pro Issue 7 months in

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:11 PM PDT

I bought the base 2019 MacBook pro back in October last year. It was working great until it wouldn't turn on a couple days ago. I brought it to an apple authorized repair center and they said that it is probably the logic board. Is it normal to have this kind of thing happen so soon after buying it. I am worried that it might happen again later down the road when the 1 year warranty is up. I am a student and don't want to be paying hundreds of dollars in repairs. Should I sell the Mac, after it is repaired, and get maybe the base model MacBook Air or go for a different Apple model. I will be using this computer for basic tasks: emails, writing papers. The most intensive other tasks would be running Caibre and Handbrake. Not sure if I should consider a Windows computer. I really like MacOS though. Any thoughts?

Also any idea why the computer failed?

Right speaker doesn't work after battery replacement (MBP 2015 15)

    Posted: 05 May 2021 01:47 PM PDT

Recently had a battery replacement at the apple store for my macbook pro mid-2015. 2 months later, the right speaker doesn't work. The laptop was barely in use during that time, so I suspect something might have went wrong with the repair. I tried resetting PRAM and SMC, and checked the Audio MIDI setup already. I plan to give the apple store in my city a call but I highly doubt they will admit this was caused by them or be willing to help without a paid repair.

Does anyone have experience with this? Are there other solutions I could try?

Macbook Air 2020 - Issue with external monitor

    Posted: 05 May 2021 04:51 PM PDT

I'm having a bit of an issue with connecting my Macbook Air 2020 to an external monitor. For reference, the monitor is an Acer H236HL, I am connecting through a Hootoo hub.

The issue is that things just don't look right. For starters the colors are over saturated looking, no mater what I adjust on the monitor settings. The other issue is that the text is a bit jagged or blurry. I've tried messing with font smoothing options but this has no effect. I especially notice this in Excel or Word where text looks much smaller and harder to read then you expect even when it is set to zoom 100%. Increasing the zoom makes it larger but it is still very jagged.

Could this issue be related to the hub? Perhaps it has bad quality for the HDMI output. I'd be willing to get a new adapter or hub but don't want to shell out and then have the same issue. Does the official Apple multiport adapter make a difference? I'm not crazy about the price but I'd pay it if it gives the best experience.

Would someone mind helping me decide on my first MacBook please?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 03:59 AM PDT

    Hey,

So I need to buy a new laptop soon, I've only used Windows laptops before but thought I'd try MacBooks.

I know Apple tend to release MacBooks fairly regularly so I'm wondering what's the best year to go with?

And whether Air or Pro would be better for me? Primarily I'd use it for general use, studying and music production.

Also I'd preferably like a refurbished MacBook, so if you know of any refurbished sites for the UK please let me know!

FYI, I did a Google search but for a first time MacBook buyer it's all a little confusing.

    Thanks :)

In Apple ID, the list of devices shows the wrong OS information

    Posted: 05 May 2021 03:50 AM PDT

So on my MBA, if i go system preferences -> apple id, in the bottom left it lists all your apple devices. i click on my iphone 12 and it shows the correct OS which is 14.5.1

However when I click on the MBA, it shows the wrong OS, which is 11.3 when it should be 11.3.1

Tried restarting my MBA, didnt work. Anyone else experiencing this?

Should I use time machine or manually copy files to my external drive?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 02:22 AM PDT

I tried understanding time machine but it sounds complicated.

What is wrong with manually copying all the folders you need to your external drive? I have been doing this for my whole life with my windows pc (recently switched to apple)

Genuine question sorry if dumb. Share your opinions. Thank you.

Macbook Air 11 mid-2013 randomly turns off at different battery levels.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 02:07 AM PDT

Good day! Sorry, I'm not sure, whether I can post questions here, but will do it anyway, if you don't mind.

I've got the problem (googled a lot, but couldn't find the answer) with my old Macbook Air 11 mid-2013. About 2 weeks ago, I changed the battery, and now macbook randomly turns off (or hibernates, don't know to be honest) at different levels such as 7%, or 10% with no warning signs.

As Google says, I should try SMC reset and calibrate the battery - but I can't understand at what level should I reset SMC - when it's 100% or when it is fully discharged (impossible in my case, since it turns off at 7%)?

    coconutBattery app shows:

    • Full charge capacity: 5334 mAh
    • Design Capacity: 4680 mAh (100%)
    • Cycle Count: 15
    • macOS Battery status: Good

Could you, guys, help me, please? Thanks a lot for any potential help!

Little advice from a first time MacBook-er.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:39 AM PDT

    Good morning Reddit.

I am looking at getting my first MacBook for the last 2 years of my university degree, I already have an iPad Pro but I would like to have an actual laptop and the sidecar possibility would make writing research papers easier.

I am looking at the M1 Air right now, but as I get education discount, I am also looking at the pricier M1 Pro. Both at 13".

From what I can tell, the only advantage of the Pro is the touchpad, fan and better battery life.

I keep reading reviews on various websites of students who say their MacBooks are like jet engines with multiple tabs and screens open - is this actually true or just like, the usual internet lies (looking at you TikTok).

The Touch Bar does look amazing but I'm not 100% sure I'd find it useful after the initial gimmick period runs out.

The Pro is £270 more expensive than the Air, which is a lot of money when you're a broke ass psychology student… but I want to make sure I make the right choice.

    Any advice?
