Posted: 02 May 2021 07:37 AM PDT Actually I have started University and I want to major in CS. I really want to buy Macbook but new Macbook (M1) is quite expensive. I might get the old intel Macbook Air for cheaper price. Since, Apple is planning to make a complete transition to Apple Silicon chips within 2 years, is it advisable to buy Intel Macbook Air now? Posted: 02 May 2021 06:32 PM PDT So I'm seeing all these reviews online and the m1 seems to outperform the intel mbp in every way. But I found this video on youtube of a person using the matlab benchmark on his m1 macbook air (which I assume performs quite similar with the pro) and it looks like my base model 2019 intel mbp performs better and in some cases quite significantly better. I mean, the m1 is 5x slower in 3d and 2x slower in 2d. Does this mean I shouldn't upgrade to the m1? MATLAB is a really important program for me and every homework in every class I take requires using quite extensively. I assume the m1 is far behind because of rosetta. But does anyone agree that I shouldn't upgrade? [link] [comments]
Share dual monitors/keyboard/mouse across two computers Posted: 02 May 2021 08:17 PM PDT Hi all, I'm running a 2020 Macbook Pro as my work computer. I generally use it with the lid closed and hooked up to two external monitors, while using my Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard to operate it. I'm in the market for a new Macbook Air for personal use. In an ideal world, what I'd like is this:
I will never be using both computers at the same time, so there is no need to have one monitor work for one computer and the second for the other. Many of the mouse software solutions I've seen in searching for a solution allow you to move your cursor to the edge of the screen and let it jump to the next computer, but as both computers won't be utilized at the same time, and I need both screens for each computer, this solution doesn't work for me. I also recognize that I will have an issue using both monitors while charging my battery on the Air, due to only 2 USB-C slots. In an ideal world I'd have been able to plug both HDMI cords from the monitors into a single USB-C dongle so I only had to pull out/put in one cord to switch between the two, but I am coming to recognize that may not be possible. I am willing to achieve what I want by just about any means necessary – docking station, some kind of switch, software, more dongles, etc. The only thing I do not want to do is somehow link the two computers' ability to file transfer, copy/paste, and so on, which I've seen in a few solutions. Thanks in advance for your help! [link] [comments]
Do I need to purchase AppleCare+? Posted: 02 May 2021 07:39 PM PDT I've decided on buying a MacBook Air and I'm looking into the refurbished ones as well as the brand new ones. I will be using it as mainly a school laptop for college and I'm pretty decent about treating stuff well. I also have plans to purchase a nice case for it. So what do you guys think? Posted: 02 May 2021 04:17 PM PDT I was using android studio on my M1 MBA(Base variant; 8 gigs ram, 256 gb storage) when it got stuck. After 3-4 minutes I got this dialog box saying "Out of memory. The system doesn't have the required memory to perform this action". This is my first apple product and saw this dialog box for the first time as well. Should I be worried? [link] [comments]
Any way to view photos without importing? Posted: 02 May 2021 12:27 PM PDT Moved from Windows to an M1 MA, after doing some photography I want to check my photos. When plugging in my camera, I only see it at Devices in Photos but not as a USB drive, there I can see the photos as icons but can't open them at full size unless I import them. Is this normal I find it to be a huge limitation. [link] [comments]
M1 MacBook Pro fan experiences Posted: 02 May 2021 03:02 PM PDT Curious what those with an M1 MacBook Pro have experiences with regards to the fan. Preferably if you've used a 2016-2020 Intel model as well. It's hard to get a proper data on this because outside of the i9 issue, I hear tons of people saying they have no issues with the Intel MBP fan but my 2018 i7 ramps up all the time... even watching videos in a browser that isn't Safari will cause the fan to ramp up nice and loud. Has anyone had bad experiences with the fan on previous Intel models and now great experiences with the M1 variant? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Who recently ordered Intel Macs instead of M1? Posted: 02 May 2021 02:31 PM PDT Just curious and why? My client still uses VMs and BootCamp so he had to get Intel in the end of 2020. Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. [link] [comments]
Keyboards with the Search function key? Posted: 02 May 2021 01:39 PM PDT I'm using the M1 MBA. I'm looking for a separate keyboard that has the Search function key (the one on F4). I found that key to be extremely helpful and saves me a lot of time finding programs. I noticed Apple's own Magic Keyboard does not have this function. Are there any separate keyboards out there with the Search function key? Or is it possible to map this key to the Magic Keyboard? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2021 12:21 PM PDT I installed boot camp Windows10 on Macbook air 2019, it was fine until it started taking so long to boot back to IOS. I updated to Catalina, booted to windows, when I booted back to the Mackintosh partition it couldn't go back. Now I'm stuck in Windows. I tried pressing command, option, R to reset the nvRam or see disk utility but it can't respond on boot except for Option key where I click on windows disk partition. How can I wipe the disk and reinstall IOS or just boot back to the Mackintosh partition ? I think there is a problem in the drive. There are no mac professionals in my area [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2021 11:54 AM PDT My wife has a 2020 MBP and using a dock is powering 2 quite old monitors. They're both at least 8 years old (I think one is 12), 1080p 24". The laptop gets so hot she ended up buying a cooling pad, which helps, but I still suspect the old monitors are at least part of the issue. She mainly does office stuff, like email, zoom etc, so no highly intensive graphics. Are these monitors likely to be contributing or causing the heat? She can't work on just the laptop so I don't have a benchmark. If so, what are things to look for in CHEAP replacements. Not looking to spend $1000 per monitor, but got a nice tax return and could go up to maybe $250 each ($250 CAD mind you). Is it even worth it? Is it the type of screen, the connection type, resolution (very likely only to be 1080 still), something else? TIA [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2021 10:43 AM PDT I just recently updated my MBA M1's OS and now my camera is having issues. The macbook won't recognize the built-in camera unless I start it on safe mode (so it's really more likely a software than a hardware issue). I've recently reached out to apple support and now I have to reinstall the OS and back up all my files (which is annoying 😪). Is anyone else having this issue? 😑 [link] [comments]

Macbook air m1- cracked screen Posted: 02 May 2021 05:49 AM PDT Hi everyone, I bought a MacBook air M1 in February and yesterday I noticed what seems to be cracks in the screen when I brought it into direct sunlight. The cracks can barely be felt and actually, cant be seen in normal light or when the screen is on, hence why I only noticed it yesterday. I am so disappointed as I have kept good care of my MacBook and have only used a microfibre cloth to clean it. As the MacBook is still a few months old would apple repair it? Based in Ireland. When was the backlit apple logo discontinued? Posted: 02 May 2021 09:25 AM PDT This is kind of a fools errand, but I really want a laptop with the backlit apple logo for no reason other than the fact that their cool. The question is when was it discontinued and what was the computer with the most processing power that has it? Keep in mind im not looking for one to do any serious work, just a coffee shop, and web browsing computer with a really cool feature you can't get anymore. [link] [comments]
what do all the A____ numbers mean? Posted: 02 May 2021 07:21 AM PDT I always see MacBook's listed with a number for example A1370, but although I've been buying and repairing and repairing old MacBook's as a hobby for years now, no one in any YouTube video has ever explained what they mean, and I don't know what search terms too use. i obviously know that there some sort of id but can some one explain how to interpret what they mean, or do i just have to memorize the meaning of each number i come across? HELP! Creaking Noise - M1 MacBook Air Posted: 02 May 2021 07:20 AM PDT My 5 month old MacBook Air has been problematic with it's annoying creaking and loud clicking noises that are coming from the top case of the laptop whenever I rest my hands in a certain position. I've been to two apple stores. The first apple store couldn't replicate the issue, they kept it for a 24 hour diagnostic and I later found out that they didn't even touch it during the 24 hour diagnostic. I went to the second store when the issue persisted and they were a lot nicer. This is where they told me the first store didn't do a diagnostic. They kept it for another 24 hours and couldn't replicate the issue. I finally received the laptop back with the issue still persisting. I called into apple support and spoke to a senior who took my video proof of the issue occurring on the laptop and said that she would sign me up to send it out to a repair centre and it would take 8-10 business days. I have tried everything and I am upset. The clicking noise is not normal and multiple people at Apple have told me it is not normal. No other Macbooks that are around me do this. I would know as I am around a lot of Macbooks everyday. I am coming to Reddit to see what my next steps are. I am waiting for it to come back from repair, but should the issue still persist, what are my next options? I am NOT buying another MacBook Air. This issue is not ignorable, it sounds like a loud clank and frustrates me as a laptop this new should not be making this kind of sound. What should I do? Anybody experience something similar? Macbook Retina overheating playing old games since I updated to iOS 10.15.7 Posted: 02 May 2021 06:39 AM PDT I have a Macbook Retina (early 2015) that I used for old Steam games (Kotor, L4D etc) without any problems. Ever since I updated to iOS 10.15.7, I get regular error messages that the performance is reduced due to overheating. And there's a significant drop in performance compared to before. No other apps running while I play games. Any ideas/tips on how I can prevent this? Is the chip not connecting to the heatsink anymore? Or should I update to Big Sur but wont it require more resources? My specs: 1.2GHz dualcore intel core M 8 gb ram intel hd graphics 5300 Thanks! [link] [comments]
Are deliveries still delayed because of Covid? Posted: 02 May 2021 05:31 AM PDT Or does apple like to be on the safe side and deliver before the arrival date specified in the 'processing phase'? [link] [comments]
I’m trying to dual boot my MacBook Pro 2020 (pre M1) with Windows 10 but… Posted: 02 May 2021 02:19 AM PDT Keep getting the error 'Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation'. Using a genuine ISO from windows with a genuine serial number, any ideas? I'm not HUGELY technical but I've dual booted older machines with no hassle before. Machines that allowed dual booting from USB… this MBP seems to hate when an external HDD/SSD is attached during this process and the boot camp assistant seems to do all the work for you… any help would be appreciated.
