Keeping expectations REAL for iPadOS 15

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 06:25 AM PDT

Remember that the iPad was first introduced in 2010.

    • Having two apps side by side didn't come until iOS 9 in 2015. Five years to have two apps side by side.
    • The Dock and drag and drop didn't happen until iOS 11, in 2017. Two years from 2015. Seven years since the introduction on the iPad.
    • The naming change to iPadOS was in 2019. With it we got multiwindow support for comparing two instances of the same app side by side. Nine years since the introduction of the iPad to compare two notes from the Notes app. Everyone said that the naming change was a sure sign of a better focus on the iPad.
    • 2020 was the year we got compact designs for search and siri and better pencil support. The naming of the OS didn't do anything. Still no weather, still no calculator, still no health. Edit: We also got mouse and trackpad support.

So what could we realistically expect from iPadOS 15 given it's development history?

    • Widgets on the homescreen
    • Maybe better monitor support (no black bars) for one monitor

If you think you are going to get macOS or a crazy revamped multitasking support with windowed apps or multiple monitors or background proccesing or Xcode this year, you are setting yourself to be dissapointed yet again.

Just look at the history of the iPad operating system and set your expectations accordingly.

M1 iPad doesn't need MacOS but iPadOS definitely needs something like Rosetta

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 03:59 PM PDT

I agree with the opinion that MacOS apps shouldn't run on a touch screen device as is but the porting process should become much easier now that the SoC is the same.

Apple should introduce a process that automatically maps all of the MacOS APIs you use to iPadOS APIs you need so that the porting process can be as simple as designing a new UI. This would make everyone happy.

If iPad apps can run on MacOS, then it'd be logical to think that MacOS is a superset of iPadOS. Now that the hardware allows for it, they should just include the previously excluded under the hood features of MacOS and run iPadOS as skin on top of MacOS.

I made two concepts of how Apple could add extended monitor support to iPadOS 15:

These accessories make the iPad Air 4 just perfect! All that’s left is external screen support and maybe Mac apps one can only hope :)

My iPad Pro was stolen in Mexico and someone just emailed me about it...

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 05:38 AM PDT

Sorry if this post is in the wrong sub but I'm curious about the availability of info on my stolen iPad.

BACKSTORY: A baggage handler at the Cozumel ferry stole my backpack. It had my iPad and camera equipment inside. This morning I received an email from someone claiming that they purchased my 12.9" iPad pro from an old man for $180USD and he would like to help return it to me.

I can't figure out how this person has my email address though. I just logged into the "find my" app and edited the iPad to lost but he emailed me before that. Should I be worried that someone has gotten into my iPad and has other information about me? Is it possible my contact info was on my Lock Screen when he received it? Maybe after too many failed password attempts? I honestly barely used the iPad before so I'm not sure where my info would be accessible.

Does anyone have more experience in handling this type of thing? Any insight would be appreciated

EDIT: also not sure if this is setting up to be some kind of scam. I only received one email stating that this guy wants to get it back to me. After getting robbed I'm a bit skeptical about anything at this point.

Many people seem to like my Tchaikovsky digital Portrait. So here's Antonin Dvorak. My absolute favorite piece by him is the Symphony No. 9 "From the New World". So powerful and inspiring. Feel like it would be fair to draw him too

Users of magic Keyboard, do you still use touch?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 04:31 AM PDT

Hello. I'm interested by the MK, as I type a lot. However I'm wondering if that doesn't make the iPad lose its main interest and strength: the touch control.

I moved away from desktop computers to the iPad because I found using the mouse was 'boring' and gave me pain in my hand at times. Does the MK still invites you to touch your iPad or is it too far, or not convenient, etc... I know you technically can still use the touch screen but I would like to have more personal use experience , on the long run, by users.

    Cheers.

For those worrying about the old Magic Keyboard being too small for the 2021 12.9" Pro... I took some measurements.

For those worrying about the old Magic Keyboard being too small for the 2021 12.9" Pro... I took some measurements.

    1) My five sheets of 24lb OfficeDepot Laser printer paper measured 0.59mm thick using digital calipers. Placed between the MK and iPad, as well as trying it between the back of the MK and back of the iPad: no anomalies when closing it up; it stays closed, iPad does not shift as if it's being pinched out of the case, no new gaps appeared anywhere the case and iPad are in contact.

    2) I noticed this gap (which is annotated in the photo) when I first received my 2020 MK 12.9". Using feeler gauges, starting from .508mm (hotdog down a hallway) all the way up to .633mm is when I felt the tiniest bit of resistance upon inserting the gauge.

TL;DR -- Unless Apple rearranged the magnets on the 2021 12.9" iPad, I think those with the old MK will be just fine using it.

Will the grandfathered ATT iPad data plan upgrade to 5G for the new iPad Pros?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 06:35 AM PDT

When the LTE iPad launched ATT upgraded the grandfathered iPad data plan to 3G at no extra cost (though they did bump up the price for everyone by $5 at some point). Anyone heard if the plan will now upgraded to 5G for 5G iPad Pros at no extra cost?

The difference now, I think, is that ATT requires a 5G cell plan to get 5G data and also I'm sure ATT would love the opportunity to finally get rid of those of us still hanging on to the plan.

iPad File Transfer Using SD Card

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 06:05 AM PDT

    Hi all,

This is concerning the Apple Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader, White..

Can you use this to transfer files such as Word/PDF/PPT/excel from the SD card to the iPad or is it only photos and videos? So I want to be able to open these in Files..

Searched high and wide but people Only ever seem to be talking about using it for photos and videos but I want to transfer documents into keynote/good notes so I can use them for teaching.

Any help massively appreciated. I have a iPad 6th gen. Would it work on this?

If not an SD card, is there a way of doing this with a USB stick?

AppleCare+ New iPad Air and used Magic Keyboard

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 06:47 PM PDT

I've been reading some posts and searching around online, but I'm a little confused as to how AC+ applies to the iPad accessories. I'm picking up a 3 month old magic keyboard tomorrow and I just ordered an iPad Air with AC+ to replace my iPad Pro 10.5 that is on the fritz. How are accessories added to AC+ coverage? Must they be purchased from Apple.com? What about new accessories from other vendors like Amazon? And looking into it, I'm even less clear on the used Magic Keyboard. What if it was a gifted item? I haven't seen anything that stipulates when and where the accessory must be purchased. I'd like to purchase an Apple Pencil 2, and I'm looking at used and refurbished, so I'm trying to figure out if it is better to just buy new in order to have the accessory included under AC+. But if all accessories are covered regardless, I might as well buy used.

What do you mainly use your iPad for?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 04:46 AM PDT

Just curious, what do you use their iPad for, and do you also have a MacBook or a Windows PC? What do you do on the PC that you don't or can't do on the iPad? I ask this because there are some people who have said they bought it and barely use it and others who say that they haven't touched their laptop in months since getting one. For me the main uses are: social media, e-mail, photo editing, note-taking (which I do less now that I'm graduated from college), discord, watching sports games and other videos in picture-in-picture view, and some light gaming. I have the Magic Keyboard and it is really a great keyboard, typing on it is really nice as well as having the iPad float above it is great. Lastly, the iPad is simply way more fun to use than my MacBook, I'm not sure why but it's true. Thoughts?

Went in-store to check-out the Pro XDR Display Monitor to guage the new iPad Pro XDR Display on the 12.9"

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 07:41 AM PDT

So today I went in-store to have a look at the XDR Monitor $5999 to get a reference point of what the display on the new 12.9 Pro is going to feel like.

It was phenomenal, blew me away. The colors were brighter than any other display I've ever seen, and the vibrancy was parallel to being actually there as the scene in the videos playing. Razor sharp edges of every detail.

What do you guys think about the XDR? Have you experienced it in person, if so what do you think about it? Is the new iPad Pro 12.9 a good device to get the feel of that display for much less $$ to begin with?

    Missed FaceTime call bug

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 11:30 AM PDT

Every time I get a FaceTime call and answer it on my iPhone, my iPad tells me I have a missed FaceTime call. I've had this bug for at least a year. Does this happen to anyone else? How has this not been fixed yet?

Anyone have experience with Fledging's 7-in-1 USB-C case?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 11:11 AM PDT

I bought a SSD from Fledging a couple of years ago and had a great experience with the company when the SSD started causing sleep problems on my mac, they replaced it no questions asked. My family member just bought an iPad and I want to get an iPad accessory as a gift for their bday. Has anyone tried Fledging's Hubble? If not this, I'm open to any suggestions for useful accessories, but I was thinking either a hub, a case, or magic keyboard.

Looking for help brainstorming a product that combines sketch board pro and Microsoft surface studio hinge for a iPad Pro stand

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 06:59 AM PDT

Looking for help brainstorming a product that combines sketch board pro and Microsoft surface studio hinge for a iPad Pro stand.

I have been searching for any accessory manufacturer that can get the magic keyboard floating look but position down into a drawing angle as well. I don't need a keyboard as it would impede the drawing angle mode.

I had the thought of tearing down a Microsoft surface studio and mounting the sketch board pro to simulate the weight and mount position of the surface pixel sense display and that theoretically would provide an expansive comfortable drawing experience but might not work at the viewing angle to have a big black bezel around everything.

I would love the community's help to brainstorm a solution to an alternate magic keyboard accessory that doesn't rely on clamps or holder protrusions that detract from the display of the iPad Pro. And with a magnetic connection it would be easy to undock.

I saw the Kensington Pro Stand look alike but that has the problem of not being able to hinge to a drawing angle.

The moft float is unstable at the viewing angle

The lamicall aluminum stands and their clones are usually missing one or two things, can't pivot, can't hinge, uses holder prongs, uses clamps, unstable, unattractive, uses hex screws, obnoxious branding, bad cable management

I'm investigating prototyping suppliers but I don't have an industrial design or free body / stoichiometric, or mechanical engineering background but would love to collaborate to make something like this a reality

    quick question about thunderbolt

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 08:45 AM PDT

I am wanting to upgrade to the new ipad pro... it has thunderbolt that they were featuring in their presentation. I was wondering if this means I could come home from school, hook it up with thunderbolt to my monitor, and use it like that on my monitor? Or am I way off thinking this?
