Did you M1 MacBook replace your iPad?

I hate to say it but I no longer need my iPad. With effectively infinite battery life and instant wake in my mbp using my iPad feels like I am handicapping myself for no reason.

AirPods Pro sound worse than iPhone's built-in microphone when walking outside

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 04:29 AM PST

I have been having issues with the call quality on my AirPods Pro. My voice is muffled intermittently, especially outside, making it extremely hard to understand. Googling turned up this thread on the Apple customer forum, which has been getting posts since November 2020. Someone in there recorded these files in an airplane to compare AirPods and the phone microphone in the same environment, but apart from that I only found subjective impressions.

To finally get some reliable data, I recorded myself speaking into my AirPods and another iPhone at the same time, and compared the results in this video. The phone sounds significantly better.

It seems that the noise reduction on the AirPods Pro (the one applied to the microphone input, not Active Noise Cancellation) is not working correctly and smothers voice along with noise.

The lackluster performance is frustrating, especially because Apple advertises the AirPods Pro with "increased call clarity in windy environments". They are certainly no clearer than an iPhone.

Does anyone else have similar problems? Has anyone done a similar test with the original AirPods (not Pro)? Is there a working solution for hands-free calling outside? I would really like to find a good means to call hands-free while walking.

edit: I uploaded an extended version with more scenes and no commentary, for a better comparison.

    Question about Maps’ algorithm

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:00 AM PST

I'm on a road trip right now and used Apple Maps to get to my hotel on a 6 hour drive that was relatively complex. When I got here, I decided to compare my route to Google Maps and found that Google would've given me a MUCH simpler route. I decided to check other places like Target, gas stations, etc. and saw the same result. There was even one point that I was using Apple Maps to look at my route home and decided to search a gas station I will literally be driving past to go home and Apple Maps gave me some weird route to go to that gas station whereas Google gave me the same route as if I'm going home. I'm pretty confused. Does anybody know what type of algorithm Apple uses?

Here is an example: Going home This is my route going home. I marked the town with the gas station with an X. Keep in mind this route will require me to turn right at Susanville, very important.

Mobil street As you can see, I will literally be driving past the gas station in question.

Going to Mobil Here are the routes Maps is giving me to go to Mobil. As you can see, these routes are completely different than the one to go home even though they're both going in the exact same direction. Turning right at Susanville isn't even an option here. My route to go home is also pretty straight shot. My routes to go to Mobil are requiring me to circle around

Can somebody explain this to me? Thanks.

Tip: If you're having problems with AirPods automatically switching from Mac to iPhone but not BACK to Mac, there is a minimally annoying fix until the bug is eradicated.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 02:25 AM PST

You can make it work with minor inconvenience like the following scenario:

    1) Listen to something on Macbook, using AirPods.

    2) Switch to iPhone/iPad

    3) Listen to something on iPhone/iPad ----> AirPods switch automatically as intended.

    4) Switch to back to Mac.

    5) Listen to something again ----> AirPods do not switch back [BUG]

    6) As the music/video plays, shortly take out one AirPod for 2-3 seconds and then put it back into your ear.

    7) Mac content resumes being played on AirPods now.

PSA: Do NOT install Big Sur without a backup. PLEASE READ BEFORE INSTALL.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 05:47 PM PST

For the record, I own a 2016 MBP with all the bells and whistles. Use it as a workhorse for video editing, etc , etc.

    BIG. SUR.

    BIG. MISTAKE.

I got tired of getting notifications to update to Big Sur and after some research where people said it was running smooth on their 2016 Macs I decided to do it.

    1. Big Sur will download as a 12gb file but when it installs it NEEDS 40gb of space to install. Something that it does not tell you and also something that will semi-brick your Mac if not met as a prereq.
    2. After the failed install you will be stuck on a perpetual 1min left, or an error could not install. The only fix for this is to launch from recovery mode BUT--
    3. Your Mac now no longer recognizes your password. If you try to restart your computer it will try to install again. If you try any variant boot up mode it will ask for your password which, still, will not be accepted.
    4. Lastly, you will be forced to call apple support and after a very frustrating 2 hour call where you try every tick in their book they will inevitably tell you that the only fix is to completely wipe your mac. After you beg them for an alternate method, maybe even bringing Mac in, they will tell you that your not the first one and if none of the prior methods work then wiping is the only option.

P.S. the Apple guy insisted Big Sur would not install if there isn't enough space and I'm the anomaly. This is a lie as many people on the forums ran into my same issues. Those same people also had to wipe their shit. I only had 20gigs available when Big Sur asked me to install.

My dumbass hadn't used time machine in two weeks. There goes any work done in that period... luckily I have some alt backups, but I absolutely still lost 1/4 of my work I'd bet. I'm so upset with apple I'm beyond words of fury.

I just desperately want to save anyone out there from going through this same incident...

TLDR: Backup your Mac before any major update. Always make sure you have 40gigs+ free when doing an Apple OS install.
