Experiences from macOS holdouts Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:59 PM PST First, let me say that i do this with a clear conscience.. since recently discovering the joys of apfs volumes not using any more space than the files on it, i absolutely dual boot with Catalina for the security patches and the music movies app (content consumption). I like it for what it is and looking forward to Big Sur as well. But because you can, i've also discovered the following which seem interesting.. just wondering if anyone else has similar or different experiences: For 3d games performance + battery life, nothing beats High Sierra. This was an interesting find.. fps in at least 2 games i play are noticeably smoother compared to newer os. To respect that its not supported anymore i avoid using the web for anything but the big services, but its nice. Activity monitor is still super quiet when you're machine is idle compared to the other os. Mojave seems borked after security update 2020-003. Maybe its just the apps that i'm running, but while serviceable, its just not as sharp as it used to be. Catalina is a menace. If you just leave activity monitor running, so much stuff is constantly flying around in the background. The end users experience seems sharp, but given that from an end users perspective, you launch and run programs in the same way over every version of the os.. the mind boggles on what apple have come up with to constantly use cpu while you do nothing. It does have nice end user features and is needed for development so i use it often.. but in my mind its a desktop os there are better versions for laptops. Sure, most people don't care, but if you stick to post apfs macOS, if you can and do care, its a joy how easy it is to tinker around and find the best version for your own needs.. given the relentless yearly change for changes sake. 2TB HDD with USB 3.0 -> wireless time machine backup? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:00 PM PST Greetings: I am trying to figure out how I can get my Time Machine backup going with a portable 2TB hard drive and a USB 3.0 connection. I have Orbi routers in my house, and they do not have any USB ports. What do you suggest trying? I want to give it another shot before I drop money into a NAS. Thank you [link] [comments]
iStat Menu battery drain issue Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:38 PM PST I wanted to use a system monitor app similar to HWINFO64 on windows, and I found iStat menu. However, after I installed it through web(not App Store) and Intel power gadget, my MacBook Pro 13" 2020 has been dead overnight when I closed the lid. My suspicion was that iStat menu was keep monitoring even when I closed the lid and Mac went to sleep. I tested once to see if my Mac would went to sleep after 5 mins as I set it. The display was turned off after 5 mins but I didn't know if it actually went to sleep. I was still in trial period so I don't know if this would relate to my issue. I never had such battery drain overnight issue before I installed iStat Menu. It seems a very good app, and I saw a lot of people recommending it. Could any explain why I was having such a battery drain issue, and how to fix it? [link] [comments]
Can you run an app as a different user like in Windows? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:30 AM PST I need to log into Microsoft 365's portals as a different user that has elevated rights. I can do this in Windows and create a Chrome shortcut dedicated to this other user. I haven't been able to figure it out on the Mac. Any ideas would be extremely helpful. Thanks all. Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:04 PM PST Hello, I am trying to learn how to "clean" my computers software. I have a MacBook Air, therefore my software is macOS Catalina. I tried looking it up on google but it would only send me to websites where I could download cleansing software. I did not do so because I am aware that in some cases these programs themselves are corrupt. If there is any manual process or a reliable program, please let me know! [link] [comments]
Is it possible to record the screen with audio without playing the sound out loud? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:53 AM PST Hello. I've tried to search on this, but wasn't able to find any answer or otherwise I don't understand the guides I'm reading. Is it possible to make a screen recording of a video and record the sound _without_ the computer playing the sound out loud for the mic to record? Some guides point in direction of a program called loopback but I'm not really sure if it's even possible to let my macbook 'direct' the sound directly to be recorded instead of having to play it out loud for the mic to record? Ideally I would either like to be able to watch my lectures on university with headphones on and record the audio or otherwise just being able to record the video with sound without having the computer to play it out loud. Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:34 AM PST I have the same SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. I can't change SSID's or disable 2.4GHz. The neighborhood is crowded with 2.4GHz, I'd really like to use only 5GHz. I've tried airport from Terminal but isn't consistent. Do you guys have any other ideas? [link] [comments]

"You may not install to this volume because the computer is missing a software partition" Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:57 AM PST Hello, I have desperately looked all over the internet and I cannot find an answer relating to my case. My iMac desktop's internal HDD is completely gone and broken so it's running on an external HDD. It's been working good for now but I want to upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra but I get the message "You may not install to this volume because the computer is missing a software partition"... Any help would be greatly appreciated 😅 [link] [comments]
Can't set-up unlock with Apple Watch Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:20 AM PST Trying to set up my 2015 iMac 27" to unlock with my Apple Watch 4. Watch is unlocked, iPhone X is unlocked, but I get this message that "Your Mac was unable to communicate your Apple Watch". Blue tooth is turned on on all my devices. Is there a solution for this that I'm missing? [link] [comments]

MacOS application unable to open my user folders Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:14 AM PST I recently installed Xournal++, but am hitting an issue. Trying to open any of the following folders they all result in the message I have tried rebooting my system. Funny thing is though, if I use the terminal and run Is there some flag I can set using the terminal, to make the application actually work on MacOS Catalina? I'm guessing the application container needs some magic to tell my computer "Just let me open the files, thanks!" Thank you in advanced! [Edit] Funny thing, even if I open it with my terminal in either way specified before, it still yells at me [link] [comments]
PDF reader which is free, non-hacky, supports DARK MODE and allows smooth scrolling for macOS Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:20 AM PST Hello. Sooo: On my search I came across some readesr like Foxit. But many of them are shareware, but I need something that's free all the time (cos student & on a budget). (And inverting my screen on my Mac is not an option, I work with many windows and my system settings are set to dark mode. And I already did that btw: I changed the shortcut for inverting. And that's only helpful if I want to only focus on reading the slides so I can have one big screen or fullscreen for it.) I just want a proper PDF reader for macOS that supports proper dark mode (editing is not necessary, but would be fine). [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:07 AM PST Anybody knows how to make Photoshop CS6 work on Catalina? Saw some youtube tutorials on it but has problems with opening files. This is the only reason I am considering downgrading from Catalina to High Sierra [link] [comments] |
