    I still don’t understand why macOS Big Sur treats icons differently. There are gigantic icons and tiny icons that used to have the same weight but different here

    So my 2016 macbook air screen suddenly just turned black and when I restart the Mac I get this screen. I tried restarting while holding command option p r and shift control option respectively but it didn't work. Should I just send my macbook for repair and any idea how much it will cost?

    I made a simple menu bar app to Turn Off the Touch Bar while keeping all the personal config and cool features at hand.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:59 PM PST

    The app is called Hide My Bar. The details are below:

    Update on macbook air display problem

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:21 AM PST

    So I just went a repair shop and he said that it will cost 450 dollars to repair the display and 150 dollars to replace the battery.

    I asked him for his honest opinion and he said that he would get a new laptop/computer if he had the budget. I also asked him about how to transfer the data from my macbook to the new computer but he said that I would have pay 450 dollars to repair the display first and the transfer was only possible from one Mac to another Mac.

    I don't really have anything important on my macbook as I mostly store everything in drive so should I get windows or another Mac? Furthermore, which model do you think should I get if I want to use it mainly for schoolwork with a bit of gaming on bluestacks? Advice is much appreciated. P.s my budget is around a thousand dollars

    Questions from a Windows User

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:03 PM PST

    Hello! I have recently purchased a MBP 16" and love it, but there is some functionality that I feel lacks compared to Windows (each system has it's own strengths and flaws). I'm wondering if there are ways to do a few things...

    1. Lock Dock Apps to current Space
      In W10, you can force the taskbar to only show apps being used in that "Desktop" to prevent swapping to another "Desktop" when clicking an icon. Is there a similar way to do this with a Mac?
    2. Web Search
      In W10, I used Listary (awesome program), and I could default it to search with Bing (my personal preference). Spotlight does not seem to have a web search built in by default (with the exception of CMD+B), and Alfred forces me to use Google by default. Is there a way I can add web search easily to Spotlight?
    3. Doc Minimize
      Finally, is there a way to add functionality to click the dock icon to minimize the window? This one isn't huge, but it would be really convenient.

    If you have other tips or recommendations you'd like to share, I'm all ears! Thanks for all the help in advance!

    Content Caching - What is it and how to use it (Writeup)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:56 AM PST

    Content Caching - What is it and how to use it (Writeup)

    I've recently gotten this set up and wanted to share info about it - and what I've learned / experienced.

    For those that aren't familiar - content caching (a form of proxying) enables a machine(s) on your home or corporate network to act as a local repository for updates and cloud content. So if you have multiple Apple devices on your network, as they install updates you gain efficiency and speed with content caching. The first device that downloads an update for example, will pull it down the "long way" (called origin) from the internet. However, this will flow through the machine running content caching and it will be saved. The second and subsequent devices that try to download this same update will pull directly from the cache. This saves your internet bandwidth, as well as likely running much faster as most folks home/corporate LANs are much faster than the internet connection.

    Here are some of the official documents from Apple on this - including how to set it up:

    https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/what-is-content-caching-on-mac-mchl9388ba1b/mac

    https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/set-up-content-caching-on-mac-mchl3b6c3720/10.15/mac/10.15

    There are two categories of content that can be cached:

    • Shared content - these are iOS/iPadOS/macOS/tvOS/etc. system updates as well as app (store) updates.
    • iCloud content - these are users personal cloud items (photos etc).

    You can choose to cache all, or just specifically one of these (for example I only cache Shared).

    Here are some tips and things I've learned along the way:

    • I would highly recommend you run this on a "dedicated" machine. Meaning - not a laptop that gets frequently moved around, taken away etc. A Mac mini or iMac would be perfect for this.
    • Your machine running this should have wired ethernet if possible. Wifi will work, but your clients will be bottlenecked by the speed of the wifi. Also, since wifi is a "shared medium" - you will have contention with the cache downloading from origin and trying to stream to the client at the same time. So tl;dr - connect via wired ethernet if at all possible.
    • After you set this up, your clients will "eventually" find the cache. I don't know what "eventually" means and can't find any hard details. However, a simple reboot of the client device will speed this discovery up - and it's next attempt at accessing cacheable content should hit your caching machine immediately.
    • The cache location needs to be on an "Apple" filesystem (ex: APFS, HFS+). I have mine set on an external drive that's always connected. However, initially the drive was formatted ExFAT and the settings would not allow me to use it as a location. I have since reformatted it (to HFS) and was able to set the cache location there.

    If you want to see the activity and stats, once content caching is running and actually doing something - these are visible in Activity Monitor in the Cache tab/section:

    https://preview.redd.it/nmm7azc14nx51.png?width=1704&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae1c685be8bde0093a150682eca02e7b151f0d5b

    So as you can see in my screenshot - I've served a total of ~ 35 GB in the last month. Of that, ~ 24 GB had to be pulled from origin (internet). ~ 10 GB was able to be served directly from cache.

    Yesterday Apple released a supplemental update to macOS. I did this on my wife's laptop first - and it came down at the speed I would expect for our home internet. But when I did this on my laptop, it was lightning fast as it pulled from the cache. I run my laptop "docked" with two external monitors. So even though it's a laptop, it might as well be a desktop machine. With COVID and work from home - it definitely doesn't go anywhere. The other cool thing, is since my machine is the content cache for our network, if I install an update that's already cached it doesn't even leave my machine across the network. It runs as fast as possible by pulling from "localhost".

    I hope this post is helpful and somewhat interesting. Thanks.

    Macbook pro 16 running catalina external monitor problem

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:16 AM PST

    Hi everyone, I used to have a 2012 15"mbp running catalina and a 27" 1440p monitor all nice and dandy. Loved the thunderbolt 1 socket, cause I could just plug in my monitor in displayport mode and use it to my hearts content. Went and replaced it with a mbp 16" unit a couple of weeks ago, a nice upgrade except for all the tb3 jacks. So got me a usb-c to hdmi converter, plugged in the monitor and 1440p 60hz, all nice and dandy (at work it'll drive my 4k monitor at only 30hz but thats another can of worms). Anyway when I closed the lid the adapter would act up and sometimes (more often than not, not five me 1440p and scale to 1080 or even 900p, anyway it did the same today, and while fidgeting with it I inadvertently (curse my hands) chose 1080i and the next thing I know I'm stuck with a white screen. When I open the lid I get 1440p and sometimes scaled 1080p but whenever I close the lid to disable built in display I get just white washed monitor. Tried a bunch of stuff including resetting nvram, spd (or some such thing), did the safe mode thing, to no avail. So here goes; Does anyone know how to fix this?

    iPad OS new circular cursor; implementation in future Mac OS Version?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:01 AM PST

    As I'm sure many of you know, Apple has updated the cursor for iPad OS with mouse support. I really like it, and that got me thinking: since Apple is already trying to streamline their operating systems, making them similar and whatnot, I think that would be a perfect opportunity for them to 1) Perfect the iPad cursor in iPad OS, then 2) port it over to the next release of Mac OS. Further streamlining their ecosystem. What do you think?

    Time Machine

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:58 PM PST

    Hi , I'm really interested in knowing what external hard drive Mac users have great success with for Time Machine. In the past two years I have been through two or three WD easy store and my book and they always end up with this error that the Time machine back up failed because it could not create the back up folder. Then I have to reformat the drive, erasing the data, and then eventually the drive fails. So I've lost two years of back ups and although WD wants to send me a new drive I really don't want to go through all that again. I hope someone has a suggestion for me. It would be very much appreciated. Or is that normal these days? Drives going bad every few months? I didn't expect this because I have a similar , but older, WD product on my other Mac and it has been running without any errors for four years straight. Thank you.

    Stuck trying to reinstall mac os

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:13 PM PST

    So i'm in recovery mode trying to reinstall macOS Catalina, but It gives me the error: "The operation couldn't be completed. Permission denied." I was told I had to delete the disk in disk utility to fix that. But even though the First Aid checks it out and everything is fine - I get the error: "Couldn't open device. : (-69877)" Anyone know what I'm suppose to do here?

    Got my MBP 2016 keyboard replaced due to the faulty keyboard design flaw

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:11 PM PST

    Hey guys,

    As said in the title, Apple replaced for free my keyboard (I got a new battery too so yay me), now am I to expect that the new keyboard doesn't have its predecessor's flaws?

    I want my retina screen like 1920x1080

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:39 AM PST

    So I got a MacBook Air 2020 and upgraded to Mac OS Big Sur which doesn't really matter. I went to change my screen but noticed that only on MacBook Pros is the availability of the option that says: Looks like 1920x1080. I do like 1650x1050 but my personal preference is for everything to be a bit smaller if possible. If you can't help, that's fine and I hope you have a great winter and in a month and a few weeks, a great Christmas! If you don't celebrate that... then... uh... have a great holiday!

    Virtual IP on MacOS does not receive any TCP data, why? (with details)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:59 PM PST

    $ ifconfig en0

    en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

    options=400<CHANNEL_IO>

    ether a4:83:e7:d0:e7:a5

    inet 10.0.0.134 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255

    inet6 fe81::10e6:131:5a4:51f0%en0 prefixlen 64 secured scopeid 0x6

    nd6 options=201<PERFORMNUD,DAD>

    media: autoselect

    status: active

    Then I go ahead and add a virtual IP:

    $ sudo ifconfig en0 alias 10.0.0.200/24 up

    en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

    options=400<CHANNEL_IO>

    ether a4:83:e7:d0:e7:a5

    inet 10.0.0.134 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255

    inet6 fe81::10e6:131:5a4:51f0%en0 prefixlen 64 secured scopeid 0x6

    inet 10.0.0.200 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255 <=======================

    nd6 options=201<PERFORMNUD,DAD>

    media: autoselect

    status: active

    Now let's test it. In one terminal I do:

    $ nc -l 10.0.0.200 55555

    In another terminal I do:

    $ nc 10.0.0.200 55555

    test1

    test2

    But the first terminal, which is listening, gets nothing :( :( :(

    So It is able to connect, but TCP data does not flow!

    Why?????????

    If I instead use 10.0.0.134 for my netcat it works as expected.

    10.0.0.134 is a WiFi IP network interface.

    multiple simultaneous user sessions possible via screen sharing in macOS?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:39 AM PST

    Hi All, I could really use advice on this problem. There is a Mojave Mac pro used for serious scientific computing and development. Currently I am the only user and can remote screen share just fine.

    I am now being asked to share the computer with another user who will have their own account. Do we have to take turns using the computer?

    Or is it confirmed possible to have multiple simultaneous user sessions via screen sharing? So while I use a remote mac to screen share my user account, he at the same time would be able to use the physical desktop &/or a remote mac to screen share his account. How to setup and enable?

    I found this old article suggesting it is or was possible: https://www.macworld.com/article/2012784/simultaneously-working-with-two-accounts-on-a-single-mac.html

    Any advice or tips you have will be greatly appreciated! Cheers, fellow redditors!
