Massive improvement in tvOS 14.2 that I haven’t seen discussed - it will now output menu sounds to HomePods

I've seen a lot of discussion on how Apple TV now supports "Home Theater" mode, including default pairing and Atmos support with your HomePods, but for us HomePod users, there's a massive improvement that has been overlooked:

Menu sounds are now outputted to your HomePods.

This is huge and it addresses my biggest annoyance with using HomePods with my Apple TV 4K:

Up to and including tvOS 14, content would output to your HomePods but menu sounds would not. This doesn't just mean that the bleeps and bloops of swiping around the UI would play via the TV speakers. It also meant that if content was playing while the UI was visible on screen (ie. when a TV+ show ends and the 'Up Next' bar pops up at the bottom or when a Netflix auto-preview starts with sound), tvOS would default back to TV volume controls.

In other words, if I'm browsing around Netflix and a preview starts, the audio may go through my HomePods, but the Apple TV remote's volume buttons would now control the TV internal audio. So I'd have loud audio blaring, and I can't turn it down, since the fact that there was UI on screen automatically causes the remote to control the internal TV sound, not the HomePod sound. This drove me absolutely nuts.

It is now fixed in 14.2.

This may seem like something small, but for those of us who have been using HomePods as our Apple TV speakers, this is a MASSIVE quality of life improvement.

Oh, one more thing: Gaming now appears to output sound to your HomePod. Previously, it would only output to the TV speaker. Now your HomePod works for gaming. The big caveat, however, is it doesn't seem to support a HomePod stereo pair. I tried playing Sayonara Wild Hearts and I was getting audio from the left HomePod. Surprisingly, it's not bad. You'd think that audio from only one channel would mean it sounds like everything is imbalanced and coming from just the left side, but the room-filling technologies built into HomePod actually make it sound reasonably balanced. It's still obviously not the same as having the output go to the stereo pair, but it's absolutely usable and is better than having the output just go to the internal TV speaker, as was the case until tvOS 14.2.

Play content from Apple TV in one room on Apple TV in another room?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 04:10 PM PST

Is there a way to make this happen? In case the question is unclear, I'd like to put a show on in one room and if I walk into another room the show will be playing there too. I have Apple TV 4Ks in both rooms.

    Dolby vision problems on ATV4k?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 02:31 PM PST

    Hello!
I bought an Apple tv 4k for my Panasonic GZ950 oled a while ago, My settings are 4K SDR with match dynamic range on. Today i bought a movie in itunes with dolby vision, and when playing it with dolby vision the image was so dark that i had to turn off the match dynamic range and play it in SDR. Then the quality became much better and brighter. Same problem on Netflix on the ATV, DV is crispy and bright the first 2-3 seconds then its like the brightness is turned down / a shadow is coming over the screen. I do not have the same problem with the built-in Netflix app.

Someone here who knows about this problem?

    No sound...

Help, I messed around with some settings with the new software update, and now I'm not getting any sound whatsoever from the Apple TV. I've tried all the sound settings, disconnected from my sound bar, tried to go directly to TV speakers, still no dice. Even tried to change out HDMI cables. Is there a setting I may have inadvertently selected that is not in the audio section? I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out.

Navigating Locast while program is playing

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:08 AM PST

I'm toying with Locast as my local live TV option on my Apple TV. Locast's Apple TV app works fine, I just can't figure out how to navigate back to the Locast Guide when a program is actually playing.I'm sure it's probably an issue with the Locast app itself, but wondered if anyone had any ideas or has experience with the Locast app on the Apple TV.

I do not have an Apple TV4k box installed on my TV nor do I have the Apple TV App installed in my Sony XH90. Based on the screenshot I was surprised to see that it’s streaming in 4K with Dolby Vision.confirmed?

With the new Atmos support in 14.2, any thoughts on what would offer the best sound quality for a medium sized room?

Stereo pair either side of TV or Sonos Playbar on floor and Sub?
