2016 Macbook Pro (i5/8/256/ntb) vs 2020 Macbook Air (i3/8/256) Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:17 AM PST Hello everyone, My wife and I have a 2016 Macbook Pro (i5/8gb RAM/256GB SSD/no touch bar) and recently received a 2020 Macbook Air (i3/8GB RAM/256GB SSD). My wife asked me to pick the one I prefer and she would use the other one. I'm in a bit of a dilemma because of a few reasons, so I wanted to ask for your opinion.
I'm getting the first dibs because my birthday is coming up. Which one would you recommend for me? EDIT: Thank you for all of your responses. I tried using the new keyboard and ran a few applications I would typically use on both machines. The performance was nearly identical except for the keyboard feel. The Pro definitely had the slightly brighter screen, and I should have very little issue with the butterfly keyboard. I have decided to give my wife the new 2020 macbook air and keep the Pro for myself. Thanks again everyone for your input =) [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:15 PM PST I recently decided to start to clean up my MacBook Pro a bit after having it for a little over a year, and I noticed I have almost 79 Gb of "Other" storage taking up my memory. I haven't been able to find a straight forward answer as to how I can find and review what's in this category. Any help with this? [link] [comments]
Casting desktop via Chromecast from MBP Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:06 PM PST Is casting to a chromecast enabled Android TV possible using a MBP? I'm able to cast a specifc tab in Chrome, but not the entire desktop. The error says to check screen recording permissions under Privacy, however that screen doesn't show Chrome requesting access nor do I have an option to enable it manually. Is this not supported? Is there a wireless way to cast a MBP screen to a network enabled TV without using an Apple TV? [link] [comments]
iStat Menu battery drain issue Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:37 PM PST I wanted to use a system monitor app similar to HWINFO64 on windows, and I found iStat menu. However, after I installed it through web(not App Store) and Intel power gadget, my MacBook Pro 13" 2020 has been dead overnight when I closed the lid. My suspicion was that iStat menu was keep monitoring even when I closed the lid and Mac went to sleep. I tested once to see if my Mac would went to sleep after 5 mins as I set it. The display was turned off after 5 mins but I didn't know if it actually went to sleep. I was still in trial period so I don't know if this would relate to my issue. I never had such battery drain overnight issue before I installed iStat Menu. It seems a very good app, and I saw a lot of people recommending it. Could any explain why I was having such a battery drain issue, and how to fix it? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 11:23 AM PST My professor wants us to record our presentations as a video to submit as an assignment. What's the best, free video software recording where it can record my screen (I will be presenting a powerpoint), my voice, and also my face (with the macbook camera)? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:31 PM PST Are macbooks good for coding and learning coding? I wanna learn c++, java, python, everything! And I want to code with the languages too. Could I use a macbook? Btw, I'm not asking about performance. I'm asking if coding on a macbook is good. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:11 PM PST can somebody please tell me how to free up system storage? i've factory reset 5 or 6 times, cleared up everything in it, and reversed updates 3-4 times and that doesn't work either [link] [comments]
Thoughts on setting up a Network Attached Storage(NAS) for Macbook pro Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:04 AM PST I am about to buy a Sandisk Extreme Pro 1TB SSD for my MacBook Pro (Because my MacBook has only 128gb of storage and since it is 2019 model, the SSD is soldered in and cannot be upgraded). One of my colleagues told me about setting up a NAS with a raspberry pi. It sounds interesting because I would be able to free up my thunderbolt port which would always be connected otherwise with just the SSD(my MacBook only has 2 thunderbolt port). I am planning to install applications on to the external SSD(which is one of the main reason I wanted to upgrade in the 1st place). Now my question is, is it feasible(or possible) to install applications on the NAS. Has anybody done this? Are there any bottlenecks to this approach? [link] [comments]
Can I connect my MBA to my monitor with the power cable? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:31 PM PST I'm trying to connect my 2020 MBA to the monitor I use for my desktop pc. The monitor has a usb-c port on the back, but when I connect it to my MBA with the laptop's power cable, it charges the Macbook and the USB-C input stays blank. Can anyone help me? Should I just buy and HDMI dongle? Thank you [link] [comments]
The Intel MacBook Pro pricing after Apple Silicon launched Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:14 AM PST Last Tues. I bought a MacBook Pro 2020, 10th Gen. Intel refurbished. After the announcement of Apple Event this Nov., I am so torn between 1.making a refund for my new MacBook to await Apple Silicon, and 2, keeping using it. I always do something intensive(4K video editing, motion graphic and playing Sims 4) on my laptop. What makes me thinking about refund is the price of Intel MacBook Pro being lowered. Is it reliable anyway? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:49 AM PST I just want to put this in a safe place as all of you know that external hard disks are doomed for failure anytime. I have both a new macbook and tried to use the migration assistant, however, I don't have enough space to transfer the old backup. I don't need the old backup to be on the new macbook, is there a way to upload directly to icloud? [link] [comments]
Looking to replace my Dell XPS 13 with the most 'similar' Macbook Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:41 AM PST Hi, I'm looking for some help regarding purchasing a Macbook Pro. I currently have a Dell XPS 13 from either 2018 or 2019 and it's been great however I'm extremely invested in the Apple ecosystem and find Macbooks are slightly more suited towards my needs and preferences. I'm not great with specs so I was wondering if somebody could help me out - I'm essentially looking for a Macbook (I'm assuming Pro) that is basically going to be the most similar performing to my XPS, as I obviously don't want to go to an inferior performance. I'm also aware that the 'equivalent' Macbook will likely be more expensive than what I paid for this, I'm willing to pay the 'Apple tax'. The specs of my 13" XPS are as follows: CPU: 8th gen quad core i7-8565U 1.80GHz RAM: 8GB I'm not fussed about the GPU (in terms of gaming etc, I have no interest in this) nor am I too bothered about storage - my Dell has 512GB but I'm more than fine with a 256GB SSD - just no less. Again, apologies for being a little bit spec/tech illiterate if I've omitted any necessary information please let me now, and thanks again. [link] [comments]
Is the touch bar an annoyance? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:12 AM PST I'm thinking about getting a 2020 i5 or i7/16GB/1TB MacBook Pro 4TB3 13" from a 2014 i7/16GB/1TB MacBook Pro 13", but I'm a bit concerned about the touch bar. How is it? [link] [comments]

Sound shutting off randomly while gaming Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:08 AM PST My friend has recently encountered an issue while playing games on his mac book. Randomly, in the middle of gameplay, the sound shuts off for the entire system. We're not sure if it's a keybind he's accidentally pressing or a problem with the game, but he had to fix it by draining the battery life and charging it up again. Is there a simpler way to turn the sound back on? Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:52 PM PST I currently have 2 choices, either: 1) 16gb ram but 256gb ssd 2) 8gb ram but 512gb ssd I'm currently just a college student focusing on typing essays and presentations, I do ocassional light editing (not 4k) and also light games like terraria, stardew valley and minecraft. I initially wanted to just go for the upgraded storage options but am wavering on the ram because so many users online are mentioning how 8gb is not enough for futureproofing purposes. But, the most multitasking I do would maybe be 10 tabs open and spotify on alongside word documents. Would an upgraded SSD be a better option than an upgrade for the RAM? [link] [comments] |
