    Third Party Widgets

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 05:40 AM PST

I'm a little lost as to why popular apps like FB, Insta, Snap, Twitter, ESPN, etc. are not offering widgets yet. I've seen a few third party widgets added as the weeks have went by but for the life of me can't figure out why the major players haven't introduced them yet. Is there a reason behind this?

Files.app - how to control what app opens when you click a file?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:31 PM PST

I recently started keeping more stuff in iCloud Drive. One thing that's driving me mad is - it seems like there's no way to change the default file associations on iOS for what app opens when you simply tap on a file from the file browser. It's like russian roulette, you never know what's gonna open.

Example- I click on a TXT file. It opened in Documents by Readdle. So I deleted that app. Then I clicked the file again, now it opens with GoodReader. Why? If I long-press I can do quick look and view the file just fine in Files.app without ever leaving, so why isn't that even an option?

So the question is- is there ANY way to control this?? Seems like a huge shortcoming...

update: just posted to AskDifferent https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/405528/files-app-how-to-control-which-app-opens-when-a-file-is-tapped

Tip: How to force download original quality photos from iCloud

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:29 PM PST

I upgraded from a low-storage iPhone X to a larger 12 Pro. On the X, I had "Optimize iPhone Storage" enabled and since I had so much extra storage, I wanted to just keep all the originals on my phone.

Normally, just going to iCloud then Photos and selecting "Download And Keep Originals" should fix that, but I noticed it could take a VERY long time for the iPhone to slowly download photos. Seeing how mine looked like it would take around a week of slow overnight downloads, I searched everywhere for some sort of workaround to just force downloading all the originals to my iPhone at once, and found a post on the Apple forum by FA-RO, in case anyone else is having similar issues:

" Here is a solution to force downloading all originals:

    • Create a new album and add all photos (it was not easy to select all photos, as in iOS 13 the select all button is gone, but you can do it manually by tapping, holding and swiping during selection, or you can do it on a Mac (cmd-a), this album will sync to your iOS device)
    • Then open that new album and select all photos
    • Tap the share icon on the left bottom
    • Select "Save to files"
    • Your photos app will now start downloading all originals, as it needs them for sharing and you will see the progress in a popup. Just leave your phone until it downloaded all originals."

Only change with iOS 14 is I think you can just go into your recents for Step 1 and select all the media, then Save To Files, saving a step of creating another album.

What are all your opinions about Apple's native WebView being forced to used by all the browsers rather than their own WebView engine?

New Auto 30 & 60 FPS video mode for iPhone 12/Pro

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:56 AM PST

Been playing around with the camera on my iPhone 12 Pro and noticed a new Auto FPS mode.

In my testing it will transition between 30 and 60fps based on available light/ISO (not motion like the description suggests), pretty much staying 60 outdoors and 30 indoors.

It is a somewhat jarring transition and I'm not sure if I want to use the setting or not. I remember my Pixel 3 did something similar, but there was no option to disable it.

What do you all think? Do you shoot in 30, 60, or the new auto mode and why?

Update: I've been diving a bit deeper into the auto 60 mode and watching frame rates in iina on my Mac - it seems to be a variable frame rate, not just flipping between 30 and 60 like the pixel 3. It is constantly balancing frame rate with ISO and it's quite amazing. There's no transition it's very smooth, but you do notice the motion get noticeably blurrier in darker scenes - but at the benefit of a way (way) better picture. I think I'm sold on the feature!

Control center swipe up/close on iOS 14

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:33 PM PST

Is anyone else finding the control center harder to dismiss/close in iOS 14?

In iOS 13 you could swipe up from anywhere but in iOS 14 it seems you need to swipe up from the bottom.

    News link redirect removed?

Did this feature get removed in 14.1? I thought it was helpful for WSJ articles.

Tap the status bar to scroll to the top

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:50 AM PST

Don't know when it was added, or how old it is, but you can tap the status bar to scroll to the top in any app, as far as I can tell. Figured I'd share since I'd never heard of it or seen anyone use it.
