OLED PWM Results: 226.2 Hz on iPhone 12

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 04:18 PM PST

Notebookcheck's iPhone 12 review is up, with iPhone 12 PWM results.

    Google Translate:

The display flickers at 226.2 Hz (most likely due to pulse width modulation PWM).

The frequency of 226.2 Hz is relatively low and therefore it should lead to problems such as flickering or eye discomfort in sensitive people.

    ...

Since OLEDs do not have a backlight that can be dimmed, the entire screen has to be switched on and off again at very short intervals in order to achieve a lower luminosity. This creates a flicker that oscillates around 226.2 Hz on the iPhone 12. It is only not measurable when the display is at full brightness.

The Russian site ixbt.com has measured 240 Hz on every OLED iPhone, including the iPhone 12. Interestingly, their charts barely show a change between devices (iPhone 12 vs. iPhone Xs).

    What is PWM dimming?

Pulse-width modulation reduces the power delivered by rapidly cycling the power source on and off. For an OLED display, rather than feeding a pixel 50% of the voltage, we can instead flash that pixel on and off to achieve the same effect. This is done for a variety of technical reasons (efficiency, colour stability, pixel degradation).

Notebookcheck has some excellent articles on this topic (PWM explainer, OLED DC dimming).

    Why is this an issue?

A very small percentage of people are sensitive to this flickering, and can suffer from eyestrain, headaches, and nausea.

Notebookcheck results for past iPhone models:

    iPhone Model Frequency (Hz)
    12 226.2
    11 Pro 290.7
    11 Pro Max 245.1
    Xs 240
    Xs Max 240.4
    X 240

For comparison, here are Notebookcheck's results for some recent Android smartphones:

    Android Model Frequency (Hz)
    Google Pixel 5 367.6
    Galaxy S20 242.7
    Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 245.1
    OnePlus 8T 458.7

Some previous OnePlus models had a DC dimming option available, but this seems to have been removed with the 8T. Android users have access to apps like OLED Saver to simulate dimming.

PSA: if your iPhone 12 is draining battery overnight, it could be because of Siri and Shortcuts

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:54 PM PST

My iPhone 12 Pro was dropping > 10% overnight ever since I got it. When I check the battery use, Siri and Shortcuts were the main ones listed. Almost for the entire night.

I tried this to fix Siri:

    1. Disable Siri in Settings (turn off the toggles for "hey Siri" and press for Siri)
    2. restart the phone
    3. turn Siri on again

For shortcuts I had to disable background app refresh for it.

My battery life is so much better since then (easily a couple of hours more)

    Here's another thread about shortcuts

    MagSafe Charger Issues...

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:05 AM PST

Bought an iPhone 12, case, and MagSafe charger. Love the case and the phone. However, the MagSafe charger gets incredibly hot when being used. I am using the 18w charger, from apple so maybe thats the issue. However, I cant imagine that would be the issue... Does anyone else use MagSafe to charge regularly and experience the same thing?

Wokeup today to my phone really hot, and only at 30% with the charger plugged in.

MacOS external display handling is awful

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 12:46 AM PST

I just spent a good amount of time yesterday figuring out how to do something that is very simple on Windows: Set my desired external display color bit depth and chroma subsampling. You can see my specific woes and solution detailed in this thread.

But the gist of it is that because MacOS does not expose these settings to the user in any way, it does all kinds of awful things depending on what display you connect. In my case it defaulted to 10-bit color 4:2:0 chroma subsampling which is an awful choice for desktop use because HDMI 2.0 bandwidth is not enough for 10-bit 4:4:4/RGB setting that you should use on desktop for proper text rendering and color. Instead it should have used 8-bit 4:4:4/RGB.

    • Retina options might be missing on 4K displays and who says you can't use them on say 1440p as well if you want?
    • HDR option does not seem to be detected based on display HDR support but some other way or is limited in how it detects it. I never saw it on my LG CX48 OLED TV.
    • Available refresh rates are well hidden behind the completely non-obvious "hold option and click Scaled" in Display settings. Why isn't there just some "advanced/simple" toggle?
    • The afore-mentioned bit depth and chroma subsampling options are simply not available so a regular user has no way to correct these if they are not detected correctly. Even for advanced users it is a pretty involved process (see thread linked above).
    • When an external display is connected, there is no way to disable it apart from unplugging it.
    • MacOS loves to just rearrange your desktop when disconnecting displays. While this is expected behavior, the problem is that it often cannot restore the previous arrangement correctly when the external monitor is plugged back in. There are 3rd party apps like Stay to fix this but again, should this really be needed for basic functionality like that?

This has been going for years as far as I know with Apple providing no solutions to what are ultimately simple problems. Even 3rd party apps like SwitchResX cannot configure bit depth and chroma subsampling settings.

This is again one of those things where you are unlikely to run into problems as long as you are using an Apple display or one that hooks up directly with Thunderbolt. The options for those are few and expensive in the first place.
