Mojave(or even Catalina) worth patching to MBP Early 2011? Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:49 PM PDT I've just upgraded my RAM and gotten a SSD for my early 2011 Macbook Pro. It's running High Sierra at the moment(really well if I might add), but I just really like the look of Mojave. I'm wondering if the patch to Mojave(or even Catalina) is worth it. Is it going to make my Mac slower overall; making my upgrades useless? [link] [comments]

Use Time Machine? Make a restore drive. Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:55 PM PDT TL;DR: Time machine restore rendered my iMac unbootable and trashed its recovery partition. I restored everything by using a flash/USB drive. Instructions for making your own drive (totally legit, cites Apple instructions) at the end. At the risk of offending many in this sub, I claim that Apple fucked up big time. I keep my 2017 vintage iMac scrupulously updated. And backed up, via Time Machine. And today I got into a state where the machine could not completely boot up. My suspicion rests on a piece of Intel shitware that I installed from their web pile, but I digress. No worries (yet). I have backup media. Lots of them: seven to be exact (you don't want to know). So I hit command-R to bring up the recovery dialog and initiated a Time Machine restore from my latest backup job. Several hours later, the restore operation completed. My iMac rebooted, and ... flashing file folder icon. Which means: no bootable media found. I tried the obvious: removing power from the machine and rebooting. No improvement. I booted my TechTool Pro portable USB drive and ran Disk Utility | First Aid from there. No errors found, and all my files seemed to be in place. I resigned myself to trying another Time Machine restore. Or maybe re-install the O/S from scratch and use Migration Assistant. So I rebooted and pressed command-R for the Recovery dialog. Flashing file folder icon. I tried again with command-opt-R for internet recovery. Flashing file folder icon. I will admit to a bit of panic at this point. This is my WFH machine and Monday morning was only hours away. Now this is just random, but I plugged in my TechTool Pro USB drive again and booted with command-opt-R. Internet recovery initiated! I will give Apple this: Internet recovery re-installed the O/S in such a way that all of my restored files were still restored. I was back in business, no further Time Machine operations required. This is disgraceful. If I did not have the TechTool Pro USB drive in hand, I would have lost at least a day getting assistance from an Apple store, or perhaps from my employer's IT department. As it is, I was damn lucky that I stumbled upon this solution. It was not skill, it was flailing, and luck. In case you missed it, command-R worked fine before I performed Time Machine restore. In fact, command-R is how I got access to Time Machine restore in the first place. After Time Machine restore completed, no more command-R. No more command-opt-R either, which is the last chance, final recovery method. I suggest that Time Machine users keep a bootable MacOS recovery drive on hand at all times. I don't think you need TechTool Pro software. You just need to make a recovery drive using Apple's resources. First, download your MacOS operating system install file from the App Store. For example, if you have the Catalina operating system, look for something like "MacOS Catalina" in the App Store. Hold on to the .dmg file you get. Then, find a flash/USB drive to use as your recovery drive. Use this procedure: How to create a bootable installer for macOS [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:53 AM PDT I've been doing udemy classes with my iPad as second screen via duet display (I'm using 2012 MacBook so sidecar doesn't work for me). The advantage of using duet is I can control pause and play without having to lift my hand off the keyboard. Lately the shortcuts (f7 &f8) don't work anymore. I've tried following everything form the net but they don't work. The media buttons will open and play my music apps instead (Spotify or Apple Music). Anybody know how to make the shortcuts only work on active media apps? [link] [comments]
Can sidecar utilize my iPads camera? Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:06 PM PDT Hi. Since my online school is starting soon, I need to have a camera, but I don't want to buy one as they are kind of expensive. I do however have an iMac and iPad, and since my iPad's camera is good, I was wondering if I could use it in sidecar as an external camera and secondary screen. Will this work? Thanks! Do you have an SSD? Did macOS "partition" your SSD automatically? Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:39 PM PDT I'm having a million different issues that I won't go into right now involving restoring a time machine backup. I noticed that after erasing my internal SSD, there are two separate "drives" listed in macOS, and they are formatted differently. One is APFS, and the other is Mac OS Extended. Is this normal?? Btw, the Extended drive is tiny, only 28GB, whereas the APFS is the full 2TB. I only have a single physical SSD. [link] [comments]
Best Options for Sharing Files with Macs in a Files Hosted on Windows Server Posted: 04 Sep 2020 03:16 PM PDT Looking for some recommendations for on sharing files on a Windows Server with Macs. Around 5 years ago the files were shared using SMB but Mac users were having lots issues with files staying locked after being closed out so the admin at the time decided to purchase Acronis Files Connect, which if you aren't familiar with it shares out a Windows as AFP for Mac clients to use. It worked well enough, but we have to renew and it is pretty expensive, $2,500 for 10 users. Should Macs work just fine with SMB? I looked and some of their macs are still on 10.13 and 10.14, and it looks like MacOS 11 is coming soon. If SMB works fine now might be better to spend that money upgrading their older Macs. Another possibility I was brainstorming was using a NAS with NFS. They currently only have ~5TB of files and its mostly files for Adobe Creative Cloud, so doesn't need to be fast either. Do Macs work well with NFS? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments]
youtube videos wont play in safari, loads videos instantly on other browsers though Posted: 04 Sep 2020 02:13 PM PDT 📷 When using Safari on my new MacBook I can click on YouTube videos but they just show a black screen and then a playback error if I try to start playing them. However if I open the same video in an incognito tab it starts playing right away. I've found that I can get the video to play if I clear all of YouTube's data in Safari but it goes back to not working almost right away. Has anyone had a problem like this or know how to fix it? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Could someone test if this app runs on Mojave? Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:36 PM PDT Hello everyone. We've built an app for Mac, but all of our dev machines are installed with Catalina. Could someone check if this app runs on Mojave? (just download & double click to see if it opens a window would suffice) Thanks for your help! ---- Not needed anymore! I've successfully installed Mojave on VMWare Fusion as suggested below. [link] [comments]
Help: Find Files with the same name but different file extensions and easily delete one type Posted: 04 Sep 2020 04:06 PM PDT I have 25,000+ audio files in my music library. Today I go through them and for some unknown reason, several thousand (~10,000) have .m4a counterparts (versus their mp3 originals). However, SOME of my audio files are, indeed, .m4a files and I don't want to delete THEM. I ONLY want to delete a file that has a duplicate .mp3 file in the same folder. Is there a fast way of identifying such files and deleting them? (Faster than me going through each folder and hand-deleting them) [link] [comments]

Spacebar Doesn't Resume Playback in Music App?! Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:47 AM PDT I am so used to quickly pausing the music playing in Music app (Catalina, btw) by pressing spacebar and then pressing it again to resume. However, lately, I swear the behavior has changed – 9 times out of 10 I'll press spacebar to resume the music and it will restart the playlist/song entirely. Any thoughts what could have changed or what I could have done to cause that? [link] [comments]
What annoys you the most about MacOS? Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:24 AM PDT This question is especially for users coming from a Windows/Linux experience. What do you find annoying about using MacOS? For example I know that if you press the red dot the window won't actaully close(?) or that the App Store is way too confusing to use. I was considering switching to a MacBook for the fall semester of university; the hardware does not worry me but I'm kind of scared I will not like the software. [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:33 AM PDT I googled and didn't find anything, I know changing wallpapers is allowed for different spaces, on a single macbook is it possible to have the second and other spaces be different from the first like an extended display? Like having no dock and no menu bar and no icons while the first main space has all of that? [link] [comments]

Is there a setting to automatically decline calls that are not in either my contacts or recents? Posted: 04 Sep 2020 01:03 PM PDT Hello I'm running 10.15.6 on my iMac and was wondering if anyone knows if there's a setting to automatically decline calls not in my contacts or recents. I have this setting on my iPhone but can't seem to find it on FaceTime preferences on my mac. Whenever a call comes in, my iPhone automatically declines the call but keeps ringing on my mac. Thanks everyone. [link] [comments]
'Other' taking up over 300GB of my 500GB Storage Posted: 04 Sep 2020 04:08 PM PDT I have been having storage issues for a while but it just got very weird. I recently cleared up over 80GB of photos and other junk from my Mac when I had 8GB of space left. After deleting the 80GB junk, the storage only improved by 3GBs. I used OmniDiskSweeper to check where the 300GBs of data were but OmniDiskSweeper only reported 215GBs being used up. So I have a mysterious 300GB 'other' eating up space in my computer that does not get smaller no matter how much space I free up. Does anyone have the same problem? I am currently running Catalina 10.15.5. [link] [comments]

Looking for alternative to Fluid App Posted: 04 Sep 2020 10:09 AM PDT Does anyone here know an alternative to Fluid App? (https://fluidapp.com) I basically want to turn certain websites into "standalone apps" rather than having them as a tab in a browser. I have used Fluid before and was wondering if there are any alternatives - and I couldn't find any. [link] [comments] |
