Thoughts on Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 07:40 AM PDT

Currently all in on Apple ecosystem. Own all Apple products except for my laptop as I wanted a gaming laptop from Alienware. I've only used iPads since the original iPad Air came out years ago and currently own a 2018 11" iPad Pro. I mostly use my iPad Pro as a content consumption device to watch movies in bed or when I travel. I do some light photo editing in Lightroom with the Apple Pencil and will search the web and browse reddit on it. Don't really use many apps on my iPad especially since I feel like the full webpage version is usually superior to the gimped apps that have less features or abilities (LinkedIn app comes to mind here).

Has anyone here owned an android tablet before? Anyone else thinking of trying something new?

I think what appeals most to be is that beautiful AMOLED display for watching Netflix and Xbox Game Pass support. Sure maybe one day Apple will open up the App Store to allow gamepass but so far they are being anticompetitive because they know less people will buy App Store games if full aaa games are available.

What photo editing app (with layers) do you recommend?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 09:47 AM PDT

I recently got an iPad 10.2" and have been messing around with LumaFusion (the rendering time is crazy fast).

When I am on Windows, I edit my photos on GIMP (basically open source Photoshop) and find the layers feature incredibly useful. I've been researching apps that have this feature but want to hear what you guys have to say. I've been considering Affinity Photo but the price is a little steep for something I'm not sure I might like. What's the best I can get without spending too much money?

How do you guys find typing on the new Apple Magic Keyboard? It was an awesome experience, key travel is something I need to get use to coming from a mechanical keyboard experience. Overall the magic keyboard has a very solid build and is something I will keep and use for a long period of time

    It is my laptop replacement

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:12 AM PDT

Recently there have been plenty of posts in this sub about people who were disappointed in iPad's differences/shortcomings compared to traditional PCs/laptops, and went back. I'll attempt to provide some potential solutions for these issues, and some other stuff that works for me. Long post.

I've spent 3.5 months using iPad as my laptop replacement, very successfuly, for both work and fun - and that includes two weeks where I used it exclusively as my main and only device (apart from my iPhone). And I'm not even talking about the fancy new pro with magic keyboard (which would, I guess, make my experience even better), I've been using my 3 year old basic iPad with base 32GB storage, with separate Logitech K480 and a cheap BT mouse. No Pencil support on mine.

First of all, let's talk OS-es. Windows, MacOS and GNU/Linux are the three most mainstream desktop/laptop OSes. iPadOS does have some different strengths and weaknesses compared to them, in UI design, app ecosystem and workflow. But, these OSes all have differences between each other.

Let's take MS Office, a common complaint since it doesn't work well on iOS/iPadOS... well yes, the best version is on Windows. Not mobile platforms, not web, not MacOS - which is interesting, considering Excel and PowerPoint originated on Mac. And it is likely to remain so, considering Microsoft has a vested interest in making sure it works best on Windows. Google Docs is a similar story, but at least its web apps work fine.

My personal choice of office suite for iPad is the default iWork suite of Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Works well for everything I need. If I needed specifically to handle the creation of a large number of complex Office documents in MS's format, yeah... I'd look elsewhere. But there are alternatives for other use cases. As a Word alternative for writing longer pieces of work, a lot of people seem happy with text writing apps such as iA Writer and Ulysses. And there's always the option of learning LaTeX and compiling it within a-Shell.

Programming is a complex topic, what you can do depends on the sort of work and technologies you do. Not being able to build and distribute a fully native app on the platform itself is probably the biggest minus, if that's what you want to do. All I personally need are some small shell scripts, and a few simple python scripts; Shortcuts integration is a plus. Pythonista, a-Shell and iSH do that for me, though YMMV depending on your needs and tech used.

While not all software is available on iPadOS, there are ways to access it. iSH is an Alpine Linux distro on Testflight, which allows me to do a lot of stuff that I otherwise couldn't on the iPad itself.

I'm working as a sysadmin, and the main functionality I need for my work is remote desktop. I use Jump, since it was the first post-13.4 app to really support mice well, though I hear MS RDP app got better since. Plus, I can use its app-specific protocol to remote to my home PC without setting up a VPN. Actually, it's an example of what iPad does better compared to my PC or my old laptop... I pick it up and it's on, I connect it, and it's in the system. While it's true that a PC is more comfortable for long-term work, this allowed me to react faster when something needs to be done now, and reduce some service downtime. It does well over ssh too.

iPad is my main e-mail, ebook, music and streaming device, and it's been so for a while. It's also my preferred device for surfing (unless I need heavy multitasking), social networking, reddit. It's my main photo and video editor, thanks to Pixelmator and LumaFusion - although I keep my videos short due to my low storage config. The only reasons why I turn my PC on from time to time are gaming and some heavy multitasking work, which is still better done on a PC. But I haven't really turned my laptop on in months, except to update it. It can't do everything on its own well, but it can if you have another system to remote to - or even a Raspberry pi or a VPS somewhere on the internet. All in all, I'm happy with it - and it keeps surprising me years after purchase. And I'd love to see it improve even more :)

TL;DR - it's my laptop replacement (and scanner replacement ;)), and I don't feel like I really miss much if I use it as my only device. It's not the best choice for some workflows, but it is for others, and it does all I really need it to do - though not always in the same way. It would be unrealistic to assume that any device or form factor out there would be the best for absolutely all the computing needs, in every situation. And I think that's OK.

Microsoft Officially Ends Pursuing xCloud on iOS Devices Due to Apple’s Strict Guidelines, Will Focus on Android Instead

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:45 AM PDT

    https://toucharcade.com/2020/08/05/microsoft-ends-xcloud-on-ios/

I've been using an iPhone since the iPhone 3G and iPad since the iPad 2. Due to the changing landscape of gaming though with cloud computing, I think this decision has a likelyhood of convincing me to ditch the whole iOS ecosystem if Apple doesn't change its policies.

Outlining Apps that don't require a subscription?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I'm looking for an outlining app for the iPad that doesn't require a subscription, as so many of them do.

    • The key feature I need is the ability to "fold" a line all the items beneath it can be hidden.
    • It should be available as a Mac App as well so I can also use it on my Macbook. I will gladly pay for both as long as it's a one time purchase and NOT a subscription.

Incidentally, a code editor that provides this folding feature would work just as well. My current one (Textastic) doesn't have the folding feature.

Can I remap the Numeric Keyboard 'HOME/END' keys to move to the front/back of a line?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 06:57 AM PDT

I use MacOS in my office and iPadOS when I am working from home.

I prefer using the Large Apple Bluetooth NUMERIC KEYBOARD as they have the HOME/END keys on the right as well as easy to use number pad.

One of the short cut that I often use is the HOME/END key, so I can move to the front/back of a line quickly... and I am so used to that when I work with MacOS in my office. I know I can use CMD + Arrow but that is two keys, where HOME/END keys are only a single key... and it's much more convenient.

I remember I had to remap the keys in MacOS as well... but is there ANY way I can Remap the HOME/END keys on the iPad?

I really hope that there can be a solution for this issue as APPLE is trying to push the iPad as the 'next Computer'.

    Thx.

Comparing processing powers of iPads, and comparing those of iPads with a MacBook Pro.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 02:47 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have access to an iPad 2, an iPad 5 and a MacBook Pro. I'm thinking of trading the iPad 5 for the new iPad 7. I would do this because the extra processing power of the iPad 7 could be helpful to me. But before I do, I want to know just how much extra processing power the iPad 7 has with respect to the iPad 5; and also I want to know what the processing power of the iPad 7 is with respect to the iPad 2, the iPad 5 and to the MacBook Pro. The details for the specific MacBook Pro that I have access to I will leave at the bottom of this question so you can see.

I contacted Apple to ask them about this but they said they were unable to disclose the information for the processing powers of iPads. However there are the specs. pages to look at. It seems that possibly the best indicator of an iPad's processing power is the quality of the chip of the iPad. The chips for the iPads 2, 5 and 7 are the A5 Chip, the A9 Chip and the A10 Fusion Chip respectively. It seems that the best indicator of the processing power of the MacBook Pro is the detail on the "About" page of the computer itself which reads -- 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 Processor -- but I have yet to contact Apple about this to be sure that this is the best indicator of the MacBook's processing power, though I know that they would be able to tell me this information.

So here is my question: would you be able to clarify which are the best indicators of the processing powers of the iPads and of the MacBook Pro? Would you be able to spell out just what are the relative processing powers are of the iPads 2, 5 and 7 and of the MacBook Pro? It would be very useful for me if I could have these processing powers described in a ratio with respect to the MacBook; with the MacBook Pro as the most powerful, considered as maybe 1/1 or 100% processing power, and the iPads considered as fractions of that processing power -- 40%, 60%, 80%, for example.

By processing power I mean the ability of the computer or device to quickly perform functions and use apps such as a web browser, media apps, word processing apps, and so on. I have a wired 50Mb/s internet connection so internet connection speed isn't a factor for me in the device's processing speed. I know that the MacBook I use is very quick, more-or-less instantaneous, when using all ordinary functions. The iPad 5 is pretty quick, maybe as quick as a library computer. The iPad 2 I haven't been able to get the Ethernet connection to work for properly yet, but when I'm using it with Wi-Fi it is significantly slower than both the iPad 5 and the MacBook are when I am using them with the Wi-Fi (I don't use all three devices with the Wi-Fi at the same time, in case that's what you thought I meant).

Here are the details of the MacBook Pro, as the "About" page on the computer gives, so that you can see which one it is specifically: MacBook Pro; 13-inch, Mid 2012 (year); 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor; 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory; Mac SSD Startup Disc; serial number C02JCFF0DTY3. On the bottom of the computer there is the year 2010 printed, which doesn't match with the 2012 year given on the "About" page, so I don't know what that means.

I thought I'd list the "About" page specifications for both my iPad 2 and for my iPad 5, in case that helps you answer my questions. So here they are:

    IPad 2:

    Capacity: 57.1 GB

    Version: 9.3.1 (13G36)

    Model: MC916B/A

    Serial Number: DN6G8ESUDFJ0

    IPad 5:

    Software Version: 13.4.1

    Model Name: IPad (5th generation)

    Model Number: MP2F2LL/A

    Serial Number: F9FTTZ2YHLF9

    Capacity: 32GB

Virtual audio mixer to mute certain apps

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 10:42 PM PDT

I am trying any means to mute Skype or Zoom sound completely while still being able to play videos and songs at full volume on my iPad. These two apps always keep a small amount of volume no matter what, and other sound of video gets muted at the same time.

A virtual audio mixer seems like it could solve the issue, let me adjust the volume of my video and mute the sound of my group chat. I'd like to try a few and see if they work for my purpose, but they are all a little expensive on the App Store and I have no guarantee that they could work for me. I don't mind paying if it does what I want though.

Does anyone know of an app that could help me out with this?

    Multitasking on an iPad Pro

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 09:01 PM PDT

For a while now, I've been thinking of purchasing an iPad Pro (2020, 11") mainly because I could draw on it, but since online school started, I began wondering if it could handle multitasking well since I'm having problems doing so on my current iPad (mini 4). If you own an iPad Pro and use it for online school, is it enough or do you think I'm better off purchasing a laptop?

My current iPad sucks at multitasking whenever I'm on a Google Meet call and the teacher asks us to open another site or app to do a separate activity. I get disconnected from the call repeatedly and it's so frustrating.

Embarassing but I cannot find a quality wallpaper for the Ipad pro.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 01:54 AM PDT

Shame on me, yet I'm not an internet newbie but I don't know why, I can't find it. (Ok I'm new to IOS but it doesn't change anything)

All the wallpaper I find are blurred or not exactly designed for the iPad

Do you have any suggestions for apps or sites?

I suffocate at the only sight of the generic, bland and soulless wallpaper that I have so far

    Thank guys

Best way to quick send a pic from iPad to Android?

I went back to the 2012 Apple website to look for the 6 foot long power cords they used to sell but it seems they stopped selling them for iPads. What a bummer. They should really update it. Anyone else have one still?
