Bootable installer for macOS; will my plan work? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:22 AM PDT Hello, I'd like to create a bootable installer for my macbook pro 2019. It's currently running Catalina. I just wanted to check with y'all that my plan makes sense. Appreciate any feedback!
Once Big Sur is released I'll try to remember to create another bootable installer of it (without mindlessly updating my macbook). The reason for wanting to create a bootable installer is because i recently erased the disk of my old Macbook pro 2010, and tried to re-install macOS via internet download, but failed because of some error (i cant remember now). So I'd like to have peace of mind that in the future I'll always have a bootable usb for my macbook pro 2019. [link] [comments]

New Macbook Screen super dim and can't change the brightness. PLEASE HELP Posted: 28 Jul 2020 10:35 PM PDT Apple wants me to take it to a store but I'm pretty sure I can fix it. Basically earlier today my screen went black. I tried everything and figured the hardware failed. But then I saw the apple logo. Just super damn dim. Using my phone's flashlight I was able to get into it and use a monitor. Everything works fine and the brightness is set to full but the screen is black. I need to shine a light and look really hard to see anything. Any ideas for how to fix it? I use it for work and am not sending it in till I've done everything I can. [link] [comments]
How can I keep my entire Photos library on the Cloud? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:13 PM PDT Just got my first (!!) MacBook (Pro, 16"). I got the 512 GB as I have a 2TB iCloud subscription and keep everything on the cloud. Since setting up my Mac, all my pictures are slowly downloading and filling up my SSD. Currently, there are about 300GB of photos (I know, a lot). I've already set up Photos so that ~if~ my Mac is low on space (inevitable), full-resolution photos and videos are replaced with thumbnails. Is there a way for all of my Photos to live on entirely on the cloud at all times. I don't mind having to call them from iCloud whenever I need them. A "dumb" solution I thought of is to move my Photos over to my iCloud Drive... Similar situation with messages in iMessage, but that's "only" about 40 GB right now. Call me a digital hoarder, I guess. [link] [comments]

Should I "upgrade" to Catalina from Mojave on my Mid 2012 MBP? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:32 PM PDT Title. I upgraded to Catalina a couple of months back and I found that it ran with high CPU, higher temperatures, and a decrease in performance. Part of me wants to upgrade to the most up to date version of OS just so I have it, however, I'm not having any problems with Mojave currently. Has Catalina been running "better"/less buggy since it's early releases? Thoughts? I appreciate any replies. [link] [comments]

Should I disable Battery Health Management? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:51 PM PDT I see my MBP's battery periodically discharges like to 90% from 100% while being on AC power. That's due to a new Battery Health Management feature that came with Catalina. Should I keep the setting turned on or off given that I almost always keep the MBP plugged in? I mean, does keeping it on the AC hurts more than the BHM? I've read some posts here on Reddit where people say that "feature" leads to a massive battery cycle count increase even on brand-new MBPs and as soon as that reaches a critical number, macOS starts showing a warning sign instead of the battery percentage, because it thinks the battery needs a replacement. BHM does not actually seem to prolong the battery life. Is the BHM broken or am I missing something? Could fellow MacBook users please share their experience on whether that feature helps them, or hurts? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Can I disable Spelling/Grammar check system-wide? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:14 PM PDT Hi, is there any way to actually disable grammar check (underlining words in red) in the whole system? I know you can disable it manually within each app, but there are two apps, which I use pretty frequently – Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp (ugh, i kno), where there is no such option. So is there any way to really disable it system-wide? I obviously have unchecked all checkboxes in Syspref–Keyboard (Correct spelling, Capitalise words,...). Thanks in advance guys. Posted: 28 Jul 2020 01:51 PM PDT Hi I'm trying to make my MacBook run like new and after formatting the ssd my WiFi was still connected now I'm wondering if the WiFi is supposed to stay connected after the format and if not what should I do? Any help is appreciated thank you. [link] [comments]
Question of settings and profiles Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:15 AM PDT I have an annoying problem. I have a headphone amp that I use and I have to manually select it in the sound settings. If I get pulled away from the computer and someone else signs in to their own profile, they no longer have access to the internal speakers. They cannot change it and have to have me sign into my own profile to change the settings before they can get the internal speakers to work. Is there a way to allow each person to change this setting within their own profile? I find it strange to that we can't all have different settings that change once we log in. Thanks! Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:49 PM PDT Ok, so here's a really dumb question for anyone that's willing to lend me a hand: I need to find one file on my macbook pro that i worked on a couple of years ago. It is a .jpg file as i saved it from photoshop as a .jpg, i may have also saved it as a .psd file as backup but don't know for sure. problem is, i don't recall the actual name of the file nor do i remember if i tucked it into some folder that's within a few other folders. So how do i find it? Any help would be most appreciated - Thank You!!! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:35 PM PDT So i brought my wife a 09 mac the other day just off a whim, she loved it. she loved it so much that she had to do absolutely everything involved with the setup herself, but somehow when she was partitioning the HDD for bootcamp she removed the OS (I belive?) so now when it boots up it kernal panics at the apple logo causing a reboot loop, the network recovery app seems to not be there anymore, neither is apple diagnostics or single user mode, verbose just loops back to a reboot and it wont seem to find the bootable usb to reinstall the OS. Does anyone have any ideas? theres no apple store on this side of the country and shes been so sad since she done it. Any advice or ideas at all would be appreciated [link] [comments]
Help - My files have disappeared Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:39 AM PDT Model: Macbook Pro (2019) OS: Catalina currently 10.15.6 (10.15.5 when problem occurred) Note: In June 2020 I accidentally erased my hard drive so I had to install Catalina 10.15.5 from a USB and the transfer my files from my external drive. Everything was going well and I hadn't noticed any missing files until today, This morning I was reinstalling Zotero (an open-source citation tool) while watching YouTube videos when I noticed that my desktop looked less cluttered. Alarmed, I closed Firefox and noticed that all of my folders and files had disappeared from my Desktop. I then opened Terminal and discovered that all of my files that I had saved there were gone too. Even though I only backup my photos and notes to iCloud I checked to see if maybe I had been backing up my desktop and documents as well and hadn't noticed. Nope. My iCloud drive only contained photos notes. I found a lot of advice regarding what to do if your files are missing right after you updated to Catalina 10.15.5. None of that advice worked for me, and I had been using Catalina 10.15.5 for a few weeks now with no incident. I thought that perhaps my computer was infected with malware, so I performed three "deep scans" of my computer using Macbytes, Clam AV, and BitDefender. My mac was clean. I called the Genius Bar and after an hour of listening to Jazz music, I was finally connected to an employee. I shared my screen with him and after looking everywhere he could think of, put me back on hold to get his Senior advisor, who was also similarly stumped. Now, I did manage to recover some files, but they are not recent files. For example, I recovered a version of a paper that I had worked on a few weeks ago, but the most current version, which I had edited yesterday, was nowhere to be found. Also, all of my applications are still present, including the most current ones. To recap: my folders and documents are missing and I can only recover old version of some of them, but my applications are not missing and including a few I had installed very recently. I am honestly stumped. It appears as though everything under /Users/Ze_Labyrinth had disappeared while everything else was intact. I have accepted the loss of my files, but I do not like unsolved mysteries. Does anyone have any idea how this could have happened? [link] [comments]
Suggestions for best duplicate file finder w Specific Criteria (apologize if wrong subreddit) Posted: 28 Jul 2020 11:54 AM PDT I'm new to posting inquiries on Reddit or any social forum yet is at the end of the road so to speak with no options remaining I could decipher. In short, I am interested in any program, link, suggestion, or assistance in removing files that have been duplicated or some even 10x over which regular duplicate finders fail to locate...For Example, if doc1.pdf is duplicated it becomes doc1(2).pdf. The programs, apps I've used usually do not recognize the duplicated file as being a duplicate bc it is #' ed or had the word "copy" attached...Is there some way to isolate, merge and or purge these types of duplicated files? This is my short question which I would be grateful for any suggestions. A more detailed explanation of the issues which may answer questions some may consider from the onset is listed below. I realize is lengthy but hopefully provides as much info as possible for any who wish to delve that deep. Yet, the crux of my inquiry is above. Either way, I thank those who read and wishing all a blessed day. Take Care I have owned Apple products from my first computer which was a Commodore 64 with a dot matrix printer. So I'm old (pains me to admit). Regardless, I have founded companies, both small & large, worked with/assisted both public and private entities as well as governmental entities domestically & abroad. Having such a diverse background forced me to be proficient with Windows as well. In addition, utilizing both platforms & nature of my business requires multiple layers of security to be in place as well as much more than standard storage devices will accommodate. I closed my primary business after 20+ years not long ago and with it, my ability to summons my IT department or SEO to assist or do something for me no longer exists leaving me realizing I didn't and do not know as much as I thought I did. Long & short is this, with the primary computers I use @ home office are older macs (2010 & 2011 iMacs with 3 Seagate SLIM External Harddrives attached-2TB/each to store records, pics and now even as my start-up disk. When the High Sierra update occurred several years ago causing massive security issues for millions & also caused 1000s (perhaps millions) of Macs internal Hard drives to not download the upgrade and or when it did the update did something to the hard drive which rendered many read-only, loss of permissions & altered partitions, etc. I share ALL of the above as a backdrop to what my primary question is for now although what I mentioned above and several critical issues which resulted from the update I have yet to be able to resolve. Nonetheless, utilizing iCloud, Onedrive, Evernote, Google Drive, Dropbox, and external hard drives I found uploading 1 pic, 1 article, 1 document and more so with embedded programs such as contacts, photos, apps, etc (specifically Libr Sata, VM Sata, USERS SATA, Apps Sata, etc) would lead to the 1 document for example named "doc1" would be saved, located at nearly every location regardless of my settings, preferences (or that which I understand before me)....With many copies of doc1 existing but none have the same file name, file path or even permissions...when viewing info for the file I noticed instead of my username, admin & obligatory Everybody being listed which changed permissions to "No Access" where I had permissions to do so...yet there were/are some locations where my username doesn't appear, only wheel, Syst admin and Everybody...I can not change nor add myself as a user either noticed by system w admin rights although I assigned such under the system preferences. I also have used Terminal commands extensively researching literally hundreds of hours over the past 1-2 years yet nothing I do include a factory reset does anything towards granting access or treating me as a Super Admin using single-user mode & the command lines for such. All of this results in the following: doc1.pdf as an example yet is placed in numerous different locations and now I have thousands of files which have been 2-3-4-5-6x duplicated...a simple duplicate finder will not locate because the file name is not exact due to each time the file duplicates it changes from: doc1(1).pdf or doc1.pdf (copy) or doc1(2).pdf, etc, etc etc etc... With pictures, it is a nightmare due to the sheer volume/quantity. With some files, I can not or the programs I've tried will not delete them if they are miraculously located because of lack of permission which I have no idea how to gain...although I had access prior to the upgrade...Apple walked me through formatting a flash drive and reinstalling the OS X from an external source, adding user through system preference as admin and utilizing terminal both as regular app while system running & upon booting with Single user mode...also have gone through clearing NVRAM, PVRAM, Verbose, Safety Mode, D Diagnostic & as mentioned a system reinstall using both CMD+Shift+Opt+R to simply Cmd+R and all in between... I have ~15 or so different Apple devices (newest is 2016) and ~20 or so PCs used primarily as workstations off my main servers which I also still have 5x Dell R710 and 720 R Poweredge Servers...all taking up space & I would like to sale once I find someone to assist me but before that, I want to make sure the systems are truly erased and reset to either current OS or original OS and really need to merge then purge the multiple files, folders...even the "vm, Libr, Apps, Users, etc" folders have been copied and I don't know what is what now...I can figure out some simple things using terminal and the disk util list commands but nothing verifies or repairs, seems recovery files have vanished and any duplicate file finder app 95% time does not recognize "doc1(2).pdf is a copy or duplicate of doc1.pdf Therefore, as thorough as I can possibly be, probably overkill, is there a program which will locate files which have been duplicated or replicated or x"-Folded" ... lastly, is there a legitimate, cost-effective program or means to remove the files denied by the lack of permissions which I can not correct for whatever reason....not just one device or computer but this is on 2 iMacs and 3 Apple laptops...not to mention killing me with storage costs and issues. I apologize if this is the wrong forum to ask such a question. I also apologize for being so wordy but wanted to eliminate any back and forth which I anticipated may occur without placing all upfront. Any suggestions, links to articles, references, or names of programs/apps or willingness to assist me in these endeavors (willing to pay or provide a % of a sell)...I'm new to Reddit or using credit so again apologies if not appropriate. Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
