Newest macbook makes loud fan noise for one second and shuts down

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 09:49 PM PDT

    Macbook 16 inch

I recently bought 16 inch with 3k lol, and one thing really frustrates me. I am curious if i should return it.

I usually program with external monitor connected and macbook lid closed. Everything runs smooth and good, but when I press sleep button, and when screen goes black on external monitor, I unplug the external monitor connector. I now expect my macbook to go to sleep, but it doesnt. It stays on for awhile, and suddenly a really loud fan noise for 1 second, and shuts down. Is my device faulty? I didnt have this issue with my old 2017 macbook. Should I return and repurchase?

Macbook Air Replace Soon Battery sign

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 06:26 PM PDT

So my mac's the Air 13-inch mid 2013 so its been 7 years now. It showed the "Replace Soon" Battery last month and ive discovered ive reached the maximum cycle count (1000) mine being 1181.

However I have no plans of fixing it because I plan to upgrade soon. But i want it to reach the "Service Battery" phase—only then will Ask my parents if i could upgrade (bc a new laptop is v expensive altho 7 yrs is a pretty good run i think)

Q: is it okay to max out my battery life until the service battery appears? How long do i probably have? (I charge abt 2x a day)

Internet recovery HELP- First Time Mac user

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 08:06 PM PDT

Hey!Recently acquired a MacBook Pro A1286 from a friend. It Was boot looping and Geek Squad said it needed a new HDD. Long story short, they didn't want it. No big deal, pop the back off, clean up a bit and install a new SSD. Tested old HDD with a bench kit, and was not spooling. Done. Boot into "internet recovery" and all seems well. The machine will download the utilities, go through the installation process with the grey bar and apple logo screen, and then show the spinning wheel. Then BAM! Black screen, and computer restarts to a white screen and does nothing else. If I leave the initial internet recovery screen, where it asks to select network, the computer will stay on for however long I want it to. Kinda racking my brain here. Any type of help would be awesome!

    P.S.

I have absolutely no idea what OS X it was using. Maybe Yosemite or El Captain? The old HDD is a paperweight at this point.

Best Macbook for a college student and Adobe Photoshop?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 06:56 PM PDT

I made the mistake last year of getting an ipad, which worked fine but couldn't do everything i wanted it to.

Now i'm trying to find the best macbook to use for college this year. The most stressful thing i'll use it for is photoshop. having a light and mobile laptop that's also powerful seems to go against itself but maybe i'm wrong.

i've been mainly looking at the Macbook Air 2020 I5 quad core since Pros are out of my price range. Would the Air I5 or I3 be better for photoshop? I've heard clock speed is more important for that stuff and there's an older 2.2ghz I7 Air from 2017, i'm not sure if that will be better than a 1.1ghz I5 Air 2020?

2020 Air keyboard feels different from 2020 Pro

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 04:30 PM PDT

This is going to sound really weird, but my girlfriend has a new air and I've been sharing her laptop for a couple months now, so I decided to buy the $1800 model from Best Buy since it recently went on sale for $1599. I love it but for whatever reason, the keyboard feels completely different from the Air. Her Air keyboard feels much stiffer while my keys feel much more loose and make louder clicks. It's not just one key but the entire keyboard.

Does Apple use two different manufacturers for their keyboards or did I just get unlucky? I thought I was crazy and trust me, my gf was accusing me of being crazy too but then she saw how much different they are too. I would do an exchange but Best Buy is out of these laptops everywhere. Does anyone else notice any difference if you've used them side by side?

Just upgraded my mid 2012 Macbook pro

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 11:04 AM PDT

I recently upgraded the RAM in my mid 2012 Macbook Pro as well as added an SSD and let me tell you... this computer may run better than it did when I first got it! I'd been putting off this upgrade for a couple months after going back and forth between this and just buying a new system all together, but I'm very happy with the decision I made. Does anyone have any tips to maintain this performance/speed out of newly upgraded Macbook?

    MacBook battery capacity dropped

Hey. 28th of March I bought a brand new MacBook Air. Today I saw that the battery capacity is already 99.8% and only 25 cycles. I am using it for school, surfing the web and Netflix. Is it normal?

macOS Catalina in a MacBook Air early 2015

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 04:54 AM PDT

Hi! I have a 13-inch macbook air from early 2015. The last update I installed was High Sierra (obviously I continued with the security ones). My Mac is in its fifth year and works like the first day. Even the battery still works for about 9-10 hours.

That's why I'm hesitating to upgrade to Catalina as I read that subsequent upgrades to High Sierra slowed down the system.

However, there are some programs that are starting to give me problems and I suspect that the reason is that I am still using High Sierra.

Anyone who has the same model with Catalina and can tell me their experience? Or any advice about it?

    Pro 19 13’ or Air 2020 (i5)

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 12:23 PM PDT

Which would be best for a college student? I will sometimes edit videos/pics but mostly for essays, pdf's and zoom. I need this computer to last at least 6 years... If I do buy the 19 Pro I will buy it refurbished so the price would almost be the same as the air 2020... which is the best choice?

My 2014 MacBook Air died recently, can I remove the SSD and plop it in any computer and use it as a boot drive to get macOS on another device?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 11:43 AM PDT

Basically the title but some added details.

I know that the point of failure was the RAM so the SSD is in good shape.

Even if I can't remove it and use macOS on another computer could I still potentially format the drive and use it like any other drive?

New MacBook for my Birthday (Question in Comments)

    Buying today. A few questions!

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 11:06 AM PDT

okay so i'm deadset on purchasing a MBP 2020 today. It's just i'm wondering if I upgrade storage 128G > 256 GB or upgrade memory 8GB > 16GB? I'm using it for my last two years of university and then for future prospects. I'm in a criminology major so a lot of essays but no programs needed to be downloaded. Any thoughts? Is 8G of memory a lot? Also is there a big difference with 8th gen and 10th gen?

Please suggest a MacBook that allows multitasking and playing Football manager or Civilization on max settings (or as high as possible).

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 10:47 AM PDT

Ladies and Gents: Classic annoying question of "WHICH MACBOOK SHOULD I BUY"

    What do I have?

I currently have a Late '12 rMBP. 8GB RAM, 121 GB SSD. 2.5 Ghz. etc.

What do I do on it?

I have 10 tabs open on Opera for redditing including YouTube. 2 tabs on Safari, 1 has netflix which is hooked up to the TV through HDMI and 1 for emails; Same time, I'm playing either Football Manager 20 or CIV VI. Discord, Mail App and Whatsapp are all open in the background too.

    Does my Macbook handle it?

It "does" handle it, but as much as an Indian Water Buffalo in the summer Months of August while I whip it mercilessly. I have to use Macs Fan Control to put the fans on Full Blast.

    What do I want?

I'm not sure. I'm happy to pay for more RAM to future proof it. The only thing I want is that everything I already do (and I sometimes use Final Cut Pro/ Camtasia etc.) to run quicker than Usain Bolt being chased by a Cheetah with no hiccups and smoothness. I don't want the fans to be so noisy.

Why do I want a replacement?

I hate the heat and the fans noise and the stuttering of graphics. I even returned my xbox one x after 2 hours because the fan was loud. I hate fans that I can hear.

Please Reddit, I'd be extremely grateful for any guidance.

Ps. This is a repost because I didn't specify that I'd like to run the two games on max settings (or as high as possible) while doing many things including watching shows at the same time.

    2020 MacBook Pro battery?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 08:47 AM PDT

Sooo I just recently bought the 2020 base model MacBook Pro and I've noticed the battery dies sooo fast! If I watch a 40 minute show, the battery is down to 20-25% by the time the episode is finished! Can anyone tell me what is going on? I've had it for less than two weeks! I don't get it! The description says you get 10-11 hours of battery life but mine definitely does not, unless I'm not using it!

First time buying Macbook, should I wait for release of ARM?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 07:26 AM PDT

    Hi,

I know this question has been asked many times for "upgrading" macbooks questions. However, I am in the market to buy a new Macbook for the first time. Currently I am using my laptop from work.

I want to buy a Macbook for the long term (5- 7 years) and therefore wanted to buy the best one: the macbook pro 16 inch.

I almost wanted to buy but then news came out of new macbooks with ARM chips in it. As someone suggested in a news article, this could mean that new apps in the future will be developed only for ARM-based macbooks and/or support of apps will stop in the future.

I would not be worried if I would buy this macbook for only 2-3 years. But since I am buying a Macbook for the next 5-7 years, is it advisable to wait for more news on the new ARM-based Macbooks, or just buy the Macbook 16 inch and hope that this will be fully featured for the next 7 years.

Your help would mean a lot since I am not knowledgeable about Macbooks at all.
