This may be a very stupid question: Are my applications saved twice? I don't understand this:

    Mac purchase

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 08:14 PM PDT

I want to purchase a Mac for school and coding but I have a tight budget of $650.

Products - I need some kind of product running native Mac OS, what would be the best (iMac 27", Mac mini), also what model or type should I get. I thought of getting an iMac as I don't really have a monitor, and iMac mini would be more expensive. I spent a few weeks on eBay and other stores, but I don't really know if I am being riped off for the pricing of them.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Best USB-C adapter for MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 04:56 PM PDT

I'm looking for a USB-C adapter to plug these things into my MacBook Pro:

    1. x2 USB ports (usb 2 or 3)
    2. SD card port (and ideally mini SD port, I know I can use an adapter, but prefer to not)
    3. HDMI port
    4. 1x USB-C port.

    Any recommendations?

I'm liking the new MacBook Pro 2020 but the lack of ports is definitely an adjustment.

I've done research on these ones before posting:

    • Satechi USB-C adapter: mid price point, has mini SD card slot, but many people are reporting issues such the adapter causing to wifi cutt out, overheating. $109AUD
    • VAVA USB C Hub 9 in 1: this one seems to be the most comprehensive hub. Haven't seen reported issues. ($42USD but $240AUD ugh?!)
    • Belkin Multimedia hub: seems good, but no mini SD port. $129AUD.

    MacBook Air - Base i3 & 8GB Ram - Quick Review.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 11:39 PM PDT

    Heya Team Reddit!

TLDR of review - Base model Macbook Air is a great little laptop, no overheating, lack of performance or subpar screen brightness for your "everyday" office/work laptop. As a reference, I own the Macbook 16 (i7), Surface Laptop 2 (i7) & iPad Pro.

I wanted to share my thoughts on the Macbook Air, base model as an everyday laptop. The everyday use of this machine sees two or three Chrome windows open all the time that hold anywhere between 8 & 10 tabs on each of them. I run a Digital Marketing agency, so Chrome is generally used for Google & FB Ads management tasks, Wordpress & other major CMS web development (generally just theme orientated). Our agency runs GSuite so all email, calendar & virtual/online meetings are handled via Chrome through the appropriate GSuite software.

I'll normally will have YouTube streaming a podcast, tech review or music in the background "most" of the time.

The only other non-browser work that I've been doing with the laptop is within the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint etc).

I sat on the fence about upgrading to the i5 for a few weeks and have read too many personal reviews & YouTube reviewer vids about this "must-do" upgrade. However, for me, the i3 hasn't missed a beat and to date, the only time that I can get the fan to be audible is if I'm streaming something in 4K from YouTube for 20 minutes or more. Other than that this i3 has been great, I can't even detect a micro stutter from the laptop yet.

So while I do think the i5 at a $100 is a good value upgrade, it's also incredibly smart of Apple to make it such a "to-do" upgrade - I don't know that most people would ever notice the difference but I do think that Apple would notice the difference of 10's of thousands of people paying for the upgrade!

The ram for my above use case also hasn't been any concern, like none, zip, nada, zilche of an issue has arisen from only having 8GB of ram.

Overall this Macbook Air i3 8GB model is doing everything extremely well for my use case and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it without any upgrades if all you're doing is similar to the above.

Lastly, battery life - I'll easily get 15 hours before charge BUT that's not continual use. It is, however, a full day of using the Air between meetings, before work starts and in the evening. If I had to guess, it's probably 6 to 8 hours of proper continual use.

If you have any questions about the Air, ask away :) Thanks guys, hope some of you have found this useful.

2020 13” MPB Fan whine/ high pitched noise

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 11:16 PM PDT

Does anyone else hear a quiet high pitched whine in the new 2020 MBP fans when they're going on medium/high? Starts at about 3000rpm. Want to determine if it's normal before I swap it out.

    Setting up a new Mac??

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 06:22 PM PDT

So I'm getting a slight upgrade from my function keys 2017 MacBook Pro to the base model 2020 and I was wondering if I should use migration assistant to transfer all of my stuff over in one rather than a clean slate and just reinstalling everything?

I like all the settings I have set to my Mac right now and would love to be able to keep them so I don't have to do really nitpicky changes to the settings but don't really mind reinstalling all of my apps etc - I have heard that its best to start fresh in case you have leftover data from software that's clogging up the hard drive but hard to locate.

Would be so thankful for any quick replies!

    Reinstalling MacOS? Unavailable?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 09:39 PM PDT

Hello Reddit, so recently I have reset my dad's old 2009 MacBook pro. I found someone that's wants to buy it and I can't reinstall the software. It's the disk utilities application that's open and Everytime I click install it tells me temporary unavailable. Also I'm a paranoid person and I have to ask, the MacBook is completely reset right? Like non of my stuff is on there? I'm new to Macs and I just wanna make sure, the os x utilities is what shows up when I restart it so I just wanna know if it's completely reset.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 02:59 PM PDT

OMAN, I NO GOOD WITH MAC COMPUTERS PLZ TO HELP.

I don't want to spend a lot, but I want the speed to be up to date , and possibly clean and rework the hardrive and memory / start from scratch. Additionally I want the thing compatible with faster program run time and speeds. Do mac book stores offer this kind of service ? and how much USD are we talking ? Or is it better and less trouble to buy refurbished and or new ?

    MacBook Air vs Pro?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 12:46 PM PDT

So I need a new laptop and I figured I'd give apple a try. With my budget I can afford either the Air i5 or the Pro i5. I want to do some basic school work, zoom calls, website development, modeling with blender, coding and basic game development with unity. Any suggestions? Which would be better for this or should I try and get the i7 of the air or pro??

    Thanks for the help!

Possible damage to the screen in 'closed clamshell' mode on a 2018 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 10:34 AM PDT

I've tried connecting the MBP to an external monitor with the lid open and it gets really hot. I am worried that the heat would cause damage to the screen of my MBP.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Is there any way to prevent Photos app from opening every time I save a photo?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 02:18 PM PDT

I've been adding photos to my library from the internet and I prefer to keep them in "photos" rather than my Finder docs folder. Is there a way to prevent the Photos app from opening each time I save something? If not I will just use my Finder folder. I am running Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287) on my MacBook Air 2020.

    Indecisive!

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 01:59 PM PDT

Hey everyone, i'm super indecisive and wondering what I should get.

The 2019 or 2020 macbook air or the 2019 or 2020 macbook pro?

I'm essentially using it for university and hoping it lasts me years. I'm planning on buying a new one since i'm kinda skeptical with used ones and i heard horror stories of paying lots of money for older keyboards and thermal issues with the air. I don't game, sometimes fortnite and i mostly want it to last me quite awhile with no issues considering i take great care of it.

Also, should i purchase 8 GB of memory or upgrade?

I was cleaning my MBP Late 2017 Touchbar (a1706) and I’m not sure if the batteries are starting to swell? The cycle count is only around 297-ish. Any help determining if I’m okay or not is appreciated!

    MacBook Air for Student

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 01:26 PM PDT

Hey Guys I have a MacBook Air 2018 that I want to hand down to my siblings as I've had it for almost two years now.

Mac Rumours suggests now is a good time to buy the 2020 MacBook Air as it has been refreshed in March 2020. Since it has just been refreshed, Apple will likely not refersh the line-up come WWDC / September correct? Should I purchase it now?

The age old MBA vs. Pro debate

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 11:29 AM PDT

I'm purchasing a Macbook for the first time after being a Lenovo user for 15 years. I will be waiting a month or so to take advantage of the education promos. I'll be using it for school projects, netflix, and occasional light gaming (Sims 3, don't judge). I know I likely don't need more than a base model for this, but I'm one of those people who keeps 20 tabs and multiple programs running at once (hello, ADHD), so I want the i5 processor and 16GB memory no matter which device I choose. With the education discount this comes out to $1540 (Canadian) on the MBA and $1800 for the Pro.

Another thing to consider is that I have an iPad (newest gen with the Pencil compatibility) that I generally take to school and use for lecture notes, readings, etc. I would say 70% of the time the iPad is sufficient for my needs at school or when I'm working in cafes and I favor it for portability. However when I'm doing heavier research or completing assignments, I find the iPad annoying and switch to my Lenovo X260 for the full size screen and keyboard. So the Macbook will generally be an at home setup. I'm switching over from PC largely so I will be able to share assignments and notes seamlessly between my at home setup and my portable setup. I'll be using the Ipad as a second screen frequently for this while at home. I will still occasionally want to bring my Macbook to school, but portability isn't the number one concern. The other main thing is future proofing - I expect to keep this laptop 5 years, at the very least. I'm finishing up my undergrad but will be entering grad school in a year or two.

    Any advice?

    Mac Adware Help (I'm dumb)

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 11:17 AM PDT

So I seem to have gotten Adware on my computer, random popups for porn or amazon logins are opening up. I'm already running Avast Security (free version) and downloaded MBAM. Neither of them could find it, and I suspect it's still around somewhere. Tried killing suspicious processes on the Activity Monitor too. Otherwise, can anyone give me some advice? I really don't want to have to wipe it. Running Mojave 10.14.3

MacBook Pro 2010 13” no backlight

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 10:41 AM PDT

Recently did a keyboard replacement on my 2010 MacBook Pro 13 inch, once I put it back all together the backlight on the display failed. Shine a light and you can fairly see stuff and also works with a monitor

Ive tried, reset PRAM, SMC, re-plugging it in, typing in password, brightness, different HDD, fresh install, no battery, backlight fuse and cleaning the connector with isopropyl alcohol, and so far nothing has changed

What else is there to try, and if there is an issue with the motherboard, what will it likely be, would replacing the display unit or connector cable do anything?

Looking for advise on how to further diagnose this so i can find the part to replace

If I dual boot windows 10 on my MacBook and use windows, will it support extended display instead of the dumb mirror display?
