My surprising opinion comparing a 2020 macbook air vs my old 2013 macbook air

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:41 PM PDT

Ive been using my new purchased macbook air for the past two weeks and I've come to a conclusion that I actually prefer to my older laptop than this new laptop. Some things I like better include:

    - Way better battery life ( 11/12 hours browsing in chrome vs. 6/7 hours browsing in chrome)

    - Way less heat. I can use for hours on my lap and it doesn't even get warm even with 30+ tabs open. According to TG PRO, my old mac stays about 30% cooler compared to the newer laptop. The new macbook air will get to 100c occasionally just watching a youtube video which blows my mind. I'm trying to have kids in the future.

    - Better ergonomics especially when used in a lap or laying down. The elevated screen area with bezels and bigger palm rest area actually help my wrists and make it easier to see from most sitting up angles.

I do acknowlege that the newer macbook does have its advantages:

    - Better cable management. I can plug in a usb c dock and one plug can control my external display, power, usb etc.

    - Better input performance. My usb c to ethernet adapter works twice as fast than a usb a to ethernet adapter ( 600mb vs 300mb)

    - A little snappier and fluid. There's not much of a difference though the 8gb memory makes the computer seem a little more responsive and able to multitask a little better. If the old macbook air was a 8 in performance the new one would be a 9. A little upgrade but by not by much.

It is crazy than in basically 7 years the innovation and difference gap are is relatively small. Overall the small performance upgrades don't seem to worth the trade off of considerably more heat, 40% less battery and the better ergonomic form of my older beloved macbook air. Anybody feel the same?

Which Macbook among the current lineup is best for a Premedical/Data Science Major

    Posted: 27 May 2020 06:50 PM PDT

I know this question has been asked before, but since the lineup has changed I'll ask again. For me, this will be my primary computer to go along with a base model iPad, and I want it to be powerful enough that I never really need to worry about it slowing down or lagging; however, I won't be doing any super graphic intense work outside of running programs like SPSS, R, Stata, Python, Excel, and all my assignments for my biology classes. I want this computer to hopefully last me the next 6-7 years through medical school, so therefore I'm not afraid to spend a little extra. Given this, would the $1700 Pro be the best option for me, or is the weaker battery life and higher price not worth it (and should I stick with the $1300 Pro?). Any help is really appreciated :)

    Square trade and MacBook

    Posted: 27 May 2020 10:24 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I recently bought a MacBook through eBay and I got the square trade warranty with it. I was curious to see if anyone has used square trade warranty with a MacBook before? I was ready that there is no deductible, cost of parts or labor. I wanted to see if anyone else has had experiences with it? Thanks!

Can I put an Android USB-C dongle in my Macbook without damaging the Macbook?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:10 PM PDT

    The Scenario:

So about a week ago I have bought myself a personal Macbook Pro (the 2020 one) with all my hard-earned money as I am going to high school. I have been pretty satisfied with it so far, but yesterday our cat bit our only wireless mouse and broke it (she has sharp teeth, and yes, that is quite ironic).

Now, whether I am doing work and being productive or casually gaming, I always use a mouse, and I personally feel like a mouse makes using a computer so much better. So I was naturally upset when this happened, and it isn't like I can't connect wired mice to my Macbook because the ports on the laptop aren't USB-A ports but actually USB-C ports.

My Samsung Note 9's (it's a phone) box came with two USB-C/USB-A dongles since the phone also uses a USB-C port. I wanted to know if I can plug in the dongle into the Mac in order to use a wired mouse without hindering it in any way. Keep in mind, this is the newest Macbook Pro, so it costs a fortune, and I don't want to do any damage to it at all.

    Photos and syncing in Catalina

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:56 PM PDT

Just stumbled across this sub and had a question so apologies if this is deeper down the threads.

I just purchased a 2020 MacBook Air, coming from a 2015. On my 2015 I could no longer sync it anymore with my phone and a folder of 28,000 photos. When I set up my 2020 I synced my phone erasing the data from the 2015 and it brought over everything.

My problem seems to have continued on the 2020 where I updated my folders with new photos of my newborn and even after a few hours it still does not sync.

I was hoping a new MacBook would take care of the issue I was having on my old one but it seems to be an issue ever since they got rid of iTunes.

Tell me I'm not alone in this?

    macbook pro return question

    Posted: 27 May 2020 11:20 PM PDT

Soo... I received my macbook on the 19/5/2020 and I placed a request to return on 25/5/2020 and the delivery people are coming to collect the macbook on 29/5. So the problem is dumb me dropped the macbook and it got scratches at the aluminium hinge area(everything is still working fine tho). I called apple support and they told me just put the macbook in the box and I might get the refund.(the person said that it was up to the warehouse and she was the front line customer service) So my question is do you think i will still get the refund??? Cause if i think it would be pointless for me to send the macbook back if it is unable to be refunded because i would rather keep it then send it and god knows what would happen?? Has anyone experienced this issue before?

    New MacBook advice

    Posted: 27 May 2020 10:53 PM PDT

Hi during lockdown I've recently got into DJing as a hobby, so I'm looking for a new MacBook. My initial plan was to buy the base 13" MacBook Pro and upgrade to 16GB RAM, with student discount this would be £1258.

However I've come across an authorised Apple reseller with very good prices. My only use case will be downloading music and using rekordbox. I may get involved with trying to produce music for fun, but it will be very basic if I do. My options are mentioned below.

    Base 8th gen MacBook Pro 13" - £1052

    Base 8th gen w/16GB RAM 13" - £1258

    Base 10th gen MacBook Pro 13" - £1460

Base 16" MacBook Pro (opened, probably a return) -£1644

As far as I can tell my use case is light and could get away with the base 13", however are any of the other options worth the extra money specifically for my use case?

college fashion student first time buying macbook.

    Posted: 27 May 2020 08:39 PM PDT

I believe as of right now my courses are just normal microsoft word, excel, powerpoint & illustrator. i take photos sometimes so il probably use lightroom or photoshop from time to time. Minecraft if possible & netflix from time to time. Id like it to last as long as possible.

Will a refurbished Macbook Air 2019 with 16 gb of ram & 512ssd be alright with me or will a refurbished Macbook Pro with 8gb of ram & 256ssd ($100 dollars cheaper than the refurbished air on the apple refurbished website i think)?

    thanks in advance

    2015 MBP to 2020 MBA?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 11:46 AM PDT

TLDR: will the 2020 MBA feel like a downgrade from the 2015 MBP if I don't do any photo or video editing?

I currently have a 2015 MBP but am looking to upgrade it to either a MBP or MBA.

I used to do a lot more photo editing which is why I had the pro, but I don't do any type of content creation now.

I'll be using it for grad school and will need it to perform well specifically for video conferencing, word processing, and internet usage while being hooked up to a monitor. Note, I typically use chrome and have a lot of tabs open at once.

Understand the MBA probably makes sense for my work flow right now, but would it seem like a downgrade if I'm coming from a MBP?

    MBP 2020 upgrades worthwhile?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:40 PM PDT

I know, another one of these posts lol

I'm trying to decide between MBP 2020 models:

    10th gen i5 with 16GB RAM (cheapest)

    10th gen i5 with 32GB RAM

    10th gen i7 with 16GB RAM

All would have either 512 or 1tb storage (haven't decided yet; might consider external ssds)

I'm going to college and am going to majoring in computer science and also do android/hopefully iOS app development on the side as a hobby. I'll need to run VMs (probably one at a time) and possibly run Windows in boot camp

I also run Lightroom and photoshop for my own photography as well as UI design, and occasionally premiere pro for 1080p video (rarely 4k)

I'm honestly leaning towards the cheapest one since the new 10th gen chips seem to be pretty powerful. As for RAM I have 16GB now on a windows machine and I'm comfortable, and I've heard MacOS does a great job with memory management so 16GB should be enough (I think? I'm a first time mac purchaser so don't quote me on that) Just wondering if there are really any benefits to the i7 or extra Ram to justify an upgrade

    Air 2020 I3 or PRO 13 2019 Base models

    Posted: 27 May 2020 02:09 AM PDT

Hello, please can you help me? I'm making decision between those two models. I'm 16 years old student, I usually do only some documents work like word, excel etc. I use photoshop once per month, so I'm not heavy user. My work looks like: word, spotify, youtube video and netflix opened on the same time. Will be air I3 enough? I would like to have one of these laptops for like 5 years and still have good performance ( or enough). I live in Czech Republic- AIR costs 30000 CZK( $1215) and PRO 2019 is 32000 ($1297). What will be better choice? I know that air is 256 ssd in the base model, but I think I can live with 128 too in PRO. Like I said, I'm not super heavy user, but I would like to have still good performance for 5 years. Benefits for me in these two models: AIR 2020 I3 Base model + keyboard + battery life + Bigger storage

    PRO 2019 13 Base model + performance + trackpad + touch bar + better display (?)

Thank you so much for you comments.

    Apple Photos

    Posted: 27 May 2020 04:13 PM PDT

I recently moved from Google Photos to Apple Photos. Google photos exist as a file that I can move around and attach. What's the trick to doing the same with Apple Photos, which seem to like to live nowhere but Apple Photos.

    Thanks in advance.

Why is Android File Transfer so unreliable?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 12:21 PM PDT

Maybe it's just me but Android File Transfer has been really flakey for years. It's so unreliable. I'm using the lastest version of MacOS and Android File Transfer. I have a patched and up to date Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G (I had the same problem with my previous phones). The USB cable is fine (I've tried others with the same result).

I'm at a loss as what to do. It works fine with a Windows PC and laptop, which is annoying. I wish my MacBook would play nice with my Android phones.

Traded my iPad Pro 2018 for Macbook Pro 2017. Is it worth it?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 03:08 PM PDT

So I already traded my iPad Pro 2018 11" (bought last March 2020 so has warranty until next year) with Logitech Slim Folio Pro, a 20€ case and 10€ tempered glass & 220€ cash for his Macbook Pro 13" 2017 256gb ssd and 8gb of ram (out of warranty) I wonder if I did a right choice or I lost? Mine's complete with box and charger and manuals while he doesn't have a box but has charger and manuals. I checked the serial number of his macbook on some website and says manufacturing date is October 2018 and that it has 1 year and 7 months age. Has battery cycle of 119

    Water Damage

    Posted: 27 May 2020 03:06 PM PDT

    Water damage

I just spilled some water on my macbook, and the keyboard is working just find but the trackpad is like, wayyy too clicky. It almost auto clicks for me, and I feel like I can click it without barely putting any pressure on it. It also double clicks and just goes crazy with clicks sometimes. It does fix for a couple seconds though when I give my macbook a good shake. It's a 2020 13 inch base model macbook pro. How do I fix this??

    Longevity of MBP 2020

    Posted: 27 May 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I am planning to buy the MBP 2020, as my usage will somehow exceed the capabilities of MBA. Given it's an i5 8th Gen, i am just skeptical about it's longevity. Will it last another 3-4 years at a good performance. Also, should i add boost it upto 16gigs of ram for futureproofing?

    External monitor

    Posted: 27 May 2020 08:02 AM PDT

Hey guys looking for an external monitor for my 2019 MBP.

The only things I really want is C-USB 1 cable connectivity, Anti Glare and Eye Protection.

Haven't decided on any screen size and resolution.

I'm going to be using it for studying 10h/day so I don't need any professional color accuracy or anything like that just screen space so I can have Safari + Something else open.

    My price range is 300-500$
