Posted: 11 May 2020 08:24 PM PDT Hi. I will soon buy my first Macbook. There is the MBA 2018 for a little less than 800 euros on the Apple Refurb Store. I don't know if it is still good and up to date or if the price difference between it and the 1200 euros MBA 2020 is worth it. Do you have some advices on what I should get ? I will use the Macbook for software dev. (As a student) Thanks [link] [comments] |

.MOV and .MP4 files won’t play Posted: 11 May 2020 10:16 PM PDT I recently found an external hard drive that I downloaded pictures and videos on years ago. Most of these were shot on iPhones ranging (probably) from the 4s to 6s. Now, whenever I try to open these files on my Mac, they won't play. When I click on a file (either an .mov or .mp4) it opens in QuickTime, and an image of the video downloads. However, the run time of the video says 00:00... nothing plays and no audio. The only difference when I try playing it on VLC is there'll be an actual run time, like 00:45, with an image... but the video still does not play. I've been looking online for answers, but I'm not tech savvy and I'm hesitant on downloading random programs without fully understanding whats going on. I'm going to continue my search for answers and information tomorrow, but I figured I might ask on here to see if anyone has had the same problem. I'd appreciate any suggestions, answers, or other subreddits that could possibly help! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
HDR option in 16” MBP just vanishes Posted: 11 May 2020 10:02 PM PDT So I just bought a new 16" MBP two weeks ago (MacBookPro16,1). 2.3 ghz 8 core i9, 1TB, 16GB, Radeon 5500M 4GB. Set up as new system but logged in using my iCloud account. First thing I wanted to do was see some 4K HDR content on my Samsung Q70 UHD tv. Using the latest Apple Digital a/v multi port adapter to HDMI I was able to successfully get 3840x2160 60hz with HDR box checked. https://i.imgur.com/lQuy6U5.jpg I later learned that 4K HDR YouTube playback isn't supported on Apple devices right now, but I could still play downloaded movies, etc. Installed windows 10 pro on a 300gb boot camp partition so I could actually watch YouTube 4K HDR and all is good. I'm able to switch the "play hdr games and app" switch on Display settings in windows. Then about a week later, I'm watching more YouTube 4K HDR stuff on the windows side, I shut the computer down, go to bed. When I wake up the next morning and boot in Mac I noticed I only get 4k60hz, no HDR Option. https://i.imgur.com/5OI6EF8.jpg https://i.imgur.com/jPlDnSZ.jpg Using the same adapter and usb cable as before. Nothing on the hardware side changes. I boot back to Windows 10 and now even there the "play HdR games and apps" switch is missing. Can't explain or even figure out what happened. Aside from just installing programs like Microsoft office and adobe creative suite, I'm not sure what I could have done in software to cause this to happen. I tried turning off automatic graphics switching off to force the system to use the GPU. I tried this while plugged in and on battery power. Still can't get the HDR option to come back in either operating system. I was on the phone with Apple support for nearly two hours on Saturday and they could not come up with an explanation other than having me run a diagnostic which created a file that I sent over to them. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. Just to make sure the issue wasn't with my TV or HdMI cable, I hooked up my roommates PC using the same TV and cable and HDR option worked normally. https://i.imgur.com/e52sKgc.jpg https://i.imgur.com/MoDKtiP.jpg Just to eliminate another possibility, I bought another Apple Digital A/V multi port adapter to make sure my original one wasn't defected and there is still no HDR option on either of my OSes on my MBP. I have to imagine this is a hardware issue, as the software no longer detects it. Anyone else having this issue or have any suggestions before I totally wipe this system clean and start from scratch ? For reference, here is apple's memo on Mac compatibility and HDR Just to add another wrinkle, I just bought my mom a new Mac mini (Macmini8,1) today, which according to the above document should support HDR output as well and i don't see option in the display settings for this system either. I tried using HDMi direct out of the Mac mini and both Digital A/V adapters to HDMI. Nothing works. Both systems are MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 Thanks so much in advance. [link] [comments] |
[help] iPhone X bottom speaker not working at all Posted: 11 May 2020 10:00 PM PDT No matter what I do I cannot get my bottom speaker to work. Sound only comes out of the top / earpiece speaker. It's extremely frustrating and much quieter than it should be because of this. Every once in awhile, and I really mean every once in awhile, it will pop on for about 10 seconds and then stop working again. I'm out of ideas honestly. Please help. [link] [comments] |

FileVault was not disabled (-69595). Posted: 11 May 2020 09:16 PM PDT Hi, I realised I couldn't find my FileVault password so I decided to decrypt and re-encrypt. Bad idea. Initially decryption seems to start normally with a progress bar but then when I checked again the UI didn't show any sign of ongoing decryption PLUS the "Turn Off FailVault" button is now greyed out. I'm on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) running Catalina 10.15.3 (19D76) and (probably related?) I cannot upgrade to 10.15.4. The upgrade seems successful but after I reboot I'm still at 10.15.3. The laptop is constantly running on power (not batteries).
Any idea? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Sandisk Extreme SSD Taking Forever to Mount? Posted: 11 May 2020 09:09 PM PDT Hello all! I have a 2Tb SSD from Sandisk and it takes forever to mount. I would open disk utilities to mount and it doesn't seem to mount. I would have to leave it connected for about 5ish minutes until it shows up as mounted. Is there a fix for this? What usually happens? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |

HELP: iCloud Drive using too much space on my phone's storage Posted: 11 May 2020 03:56 PM PDT I am seeing a very big amount of space being used by iCloud Drive on my phone. I have everything I can think of turned off. All iCloud related services, backups, etc. When I go in to the Files app, the drive is empty. When I look at the usage only 3GB of 5GB is used by messages but that's all. I don't know where this is coming from. Does anyone know how to remove this? [link] [comments] |

Looking for a way to reduce the file sizes of PNG screenshots taken with the IINA Player Posted: 11 May 2020 06:53 PM PDT I know this is a bit of a specific thing, but I looked all over to find a way to do this without finding anything. Basically there seems to be no restriction on how big a PNG file if a screenshot is taken with IINA as opposed to say VLC. I sometimes get single files at around 8-10MB and would prefer to somehow cap the sizes at around 2 or 3MB. I know I can choose between PNG and JPG files, but JPG is much more lossy and doesn't look quite as nice a lot of times for higher quality stuff. I know there are mpv options for IINA, but I am not quite sure how to make use of that. I hope someone knows more about this stuff here. Would really appreciate any help. [link] [comments] |
