When copying and pasting a file, in addition to its original name, the file gets a "copy" in its name. Further copies get "copy 2" etc. I'd like to know if that can be changed. Is that too deeply buried in the OS? I'd like copies to have "v2", "v3" etc instead of "copy". Is that possible? [link] [comments]  | ||

Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:54 AM PDT In the office I work on a Windows which works will alt codes. e.g alt + 0215 you get × So on Mac, divide (÷) is alt + / But what about multiplication I can't seem to find a way to do it with a keyboard shortcut. alt + 8 gets • which I understand in some occasions is another way of writing × After some googling and apparently alt codes are not a thing on MacOS? Why would a user click this tab? It's clearly just a repository for movies the user already owns. But why would a person go here? Well they don't want to pay for content, they just want to watch something. But what about all those moves that are available to the user through subscriptions? We've already started out with a confusing design problem. The user needs to pick from available content, but they have no one place to go to access all available content. It feels ripped out of iTunes and tacked on. Now How about buying movies and tv shows? Well apple has no way to do this, they've shoved streaming service content, rental and purchase content all into the same tabs. Want to view top 100 movies in romantic comedy? Nope. Most of the moves tab is filled with suggested content categories with only a dozen or so movies. Even when you get the the very bottom, there's a list of categories and if you pick one, you maybe get a list of 50 movies. This is an app that tells you what it wants you to watch. There is zero discovery. Live TV Did you know that you can watch live tv in the TV app? well to find this you have to navigate to a 'channel' then scroll to the very bottom. There is no single list of Live TV, there's no up next. Live TV needs its own tab. Streaming Service content. Well on Catalina, you only have access to channels content, unlike the apple tv app on iOS/tvOS. do brows channels, you have to scroll to the list of channels, remember which ones you have subscribed to and click in, once inside, you'll have similar lists of content and available moves as on the main TV / Movies tabs. Many of these movies and tv shows don't show on the main page, so lets say you want to watch an action movie, you have to navigate in and out of each and every channel, find the action movies tab in the channel and select it. this app has no idea what it's doing, finding something to watch it torture. What it should have for Tabs: Watch Now -List of moves saved to watch later -List of tv shows you are currently watching -List of streaming services -NO ADVERTISING Discover -This tab should be for finding new content, it should largely look like the old iTunes store -It should have real search options for meta data, like year, genre, actors etc -It should have ability to filter already watched moves and tv shows, and lists of top movies like iTunes had TV -This tab should list ALL tv shows available in the streaming services and already purchased content, with the ability to filter already watched content -It should NOT have content that the user doesn't own or has to rent. Movies -Same as TV Live TV -This should have all live tv channels available and schedule with the ability to add reminders for upcoming shows Library -same as it is today, but the user should also be able to save movies and tv shows from their streaming services here as well like apple music does. Search Bar -should allow you to search your library (it doesn't today, if you own content that is no longer for sale, it doesn't show up) should allow searching via meta data "Action movies from the 90's" That would be just a start to making this app useable. I'm forced to use third party solutions to find content and then just search for it in this app. [link] [comments]  | ||
| Unable to install MacOS from recovery mode Posted: 23 Apr 2020 01:16 AM PDT Hello, so I have a 2012 mid MacBook Pro and I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS in it since I upgraded to an ssd. I'm unable to do so in recovery mode(cmd + r) I've formatted the drive and selected "Reinstall Mac OS X Lion" but once I've accepted the terms and conditions it start to download and then says "couldn't download addition files" and that happens ever time I try to install it. I do music for a living and some of my daws that I use are crashing on a regular basis. Make a long story short...I want to install osx on an external drive, reinstall all of my apps on it...test it...and move it over to my actual computer. So my questions are - 1.does anyone have an article that could explain to me how to do this and 2.can I install this on an external using a different computer, then transfer it to my normal computer. The software is up to date, and my girlfriend also has a 2019 13" MacBook Pro w/ touch bar and she is having the same issues. I'm indoors and the lighting is not changing at all. | Posted: 22 Apr 2020 06:32 PM PDT So I'm in a predicament. I decided to give my nephew my old 2007 iMac. I'm not sure what OS I was running on it, but I think it was El Capitan. Well, I read online to do factory reset on before I gave it away. I popped in the installation discs and it was a fresh iMac with 10.4 on it. I did the software updates available for it. I found a download for 10.6, downloaded it onto a thumbdrive, and plugged it into the iMac. It says it needs 10.5 first. I can't find 10.5 anywhere, but I do see that you had to buy it. I don't remember paying for it back in the day. So I'm kind of stuck. The version of safari won't hardly open any pages. I went from a functional iMac to almost a brick. I updated my OS to the latest version of Catalina a few days ago Since then, I've noticed that the internal fans haven't been running at all, no matter how hot the computer gets or how many programs I am running. You used to be able to hear the fans running throughout the times I used video conference software; now they do not, even after an hour+ of video conferencing. I have run diagnostics, but it didn't reveal any issue. During the diagnostics, you can hear the fans run full blast, so they obviously work. I have also restated the SMC. Nothing works--the fans simply won't run anymore, and this is not how my Air usually runs. I tried downloading Macbook Fan Control, but I couldn't get it to work, so it wasn't any help. I would like my internal fans to kick on periodically as the computer gets hot, as it used to until a few days ago. Any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments]  | ||

| Google Chrome causes Sleep Wake errors Posted: 22 Apr 2020 06:18 PM PDT Hello, all! I hope you're all well! My 2018 MBP had been crashing intermittently the last few days and seemingly shutting down every single time it went to sleep. With the aid of Apple Support, I trouble shooted with resetting the SMC, PVRAM, and reinstalling the OS. Nothing helped until I wiped everything. Fixed!! ...except I have none of my stuff. Rather than installing my backup, I troubleshooted by reinstalling my apps one by one and putting the MBP to sleep. The errors never came back up until I installed Chrome. To REALLY make sure, I uninstalled Chrome. Sleep error gone. Reinstalled Chrome. Sleep error back. Apparently this was a rare but known issue in late 2019. Google has released a Terminal fix, but I didn't care to try at this point as it was an OS or two ago and frankly I just can't be bothered. Anyways, just wanted to share! After I ran restore on Boot Camp Assistant it said "Your Disk Could Not Be Restored To A Single Partition" and now that partition and it's storage have disappeared.
