Malware infection? MacOS Kernel attempting to connect to external IP address in Lagos, Nigeria Posted: 17 Apr 2020 04:51 PM PDT I am on 10.14.6. I have a program called Little Snitch running, which is an outgoing firewall. Two days ago, it alerted me that the "macOS Kernel" was trying to connect to an external IP address that resolves to Lagos, Nigeria over TCP port "afp (548)". Little Snitch also stated that the code was not signed. The Little Snitch assistant states that port 548 is used for AFP and SMB file sharing services. This seemed suspicious to me, so I checked the Little Snitch connection log for "MacOS Kernel" and in roughly five years of running Little Snitch, "MacOS Kernel" has only ever connected to three internal IP addresses (192.168.x.x) and zero external IP addresses. Of those three internal IP address, two have been connected to once each and the third address has been connected to 157,230 times, according to the log. Regarding the third address, the first connection occurred in Nov. 2018 and the last connection occurred in Oct. 2019, although I have owned and used this computer daily since October 2013. The whole situation seemed really suspicious to me, so I permanently denied the connection via Little Snitch. Since then, I have been keeping an eye on "MacOS Kernel" via the Little Snitch network monitor, and "MacOS Kernel" seems to be trying to connect to that external IP address roughly every two hours, with some larger breaks between some attempts. I've run an anti-virus scan already and it hasn't come up with anything. Does this sound like my system has been compromised by some form of malware or something like that? Is it normal for the kernel to be making connections to external IP addresses? Is it normal for the MacOS kernel to not have a code signature? I tried Googling about it, but could not find anything related to my issue after trying terms such as "macos kernel [suspicious external IP address]", "macos kernel little snitch", "little snitch [suspicious external IP address]". I'm pretty good about my computer security, generally, so a little concerned and hoping this is just some kernel extension I have that decided to make a connection randomly. I've got a password manager and very strong passwords for all my accounts, plus 2FA for all accounts that support it. Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]

Fresh Start vs Migration Assistant Posted: 18 Apr 2020 02:11 AM PDT Apologies if this is a common topic (it feels like it should be!) but search didn't turn up an answer. I have a 2015ish Imac, which is due an upgrade to Catalina. It was setup originally from a much older iMac hdd, so there's stuff on there dating back to 2011. There's a whole bunch of issues with keychains and iCloud is a little janky, so there is a definite temptation to just nuke it and start afresh. I've recently started using a macbook pro with a fresh catalina install and it's striking how much nonsense I've just been putting up with on the iMac just because I was used to it! As I see it I have two options (following complete backup obviously): 1) Nuke everything, fresh install of catalina, manually transfer documents back over, reinstall apps via downloads/app store et 2) Nuke everything, fresh install of catalina, use migration assistant to put back apps, documents etc Obviously 2 would be less work , but 1 gives the "cleaner" start. Anyone know whether option 2 is likely to bring over some of my old conflicts and weird os behaviours? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Failing to Upgrade to Catalina Posted: 18 Apr 2020 01:46 AM PDT Hey i recently bought an Macbook Pro 15" 2012. Lion was preinstalled. I could Update it to El Capitan. Wanted to make the Update to Catalina, but there ist always the error message „Running Bless to place boot files failed (-69583)" i tried it several times but it wont let me install it. Because i bought this Macbook new, there are no important files on it, can anyone help please? [link] [comments]
Remote into MacBook from Windows Posted: 17 Apr 2020 06:06 PM PDT I want to be able to remote into my macbook pro from my windows pc with the low latency. They are both on the same local network. I have a dual monitor setup and would like to utilize both monitors for remote work if possible. Any suggestions would be great. [link] [comments]
dlt'ing Music.app? and i assume other integrated apps... Posted: 18 Apr 2020 01:27 AM PDT just tried my old technique in Terminal to sudo rm -r Music.app under macOS 10.15.4 and got this: "permission denied: /System/Applications/Music.app" so ya... thoughts on how to deal with this situation under macOS Catlina? Moving photo's library to External HD Posted: 18 Apr 2020 01:19 AM PDT When moving a "Photos" library to an external HD, will photos not just create a new one when there are new iCloud photos to download? I have the "Download original photos" option selected. Im just trying to keep the photos files off my Mac and on to a hard drive. Any Advice appreciated, Thanks [link] [comments]

I have a question about permissions. Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:16 PM PDT I was installing something and something popped up, it said something about installing or giving permission. I accidentally clicked yes, but I want to go back. Is there any way to look at your history of permissions? I'm worried I might have downloaded malware or something like that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:10 PM PDT Thought we could share some funny translation errors in macOS. I'll start: in the icon of ZIP files the "ZIP" text got erroneously replaced with "PLZ" in the German language, which is short for "Postleitzahl" — or "zip code" in English. [link] [comments]
Opinion - MacOS needs another Snow Leopard, badly. Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:44 AM PDT Maybe I should have titled this as a rant. I'm honestly at the point now where my iCloud Keychain and auto generated passwords are close to being the sole reason my Mac still has a place on my desk at home. Mojave started being problematic for me late in it's life cycle and it honestly just feels like Catalina has just made everything that bit more annoying and then some. I really wish I was kidding when I say that this is now a more infuriating experience than either Vista or ME (Horrific ME memory leaks included) ever were but yeah, that's where it's at now. Here's a probably incomplete list of some of the issues that are currently causing me headaches lately: Mail randomly opens and steals fullscreen view (I've disabled google calendar notifications to no avail, unsyncing my calendar is not an option, windows has no problems with this). Sometimes I can go a day without this happening once, sometimes it'll be happening multiple times in the hour. Full screen video markedly shifts the colour space and temperature within Safari when on screen video controls are shifted on and off the screen. I sometimes also see issues where I'm not able to actually click on the controls in fullscreen particularly on Youtube, although this has been very sporadic and currently is working correctly. Finder, oh finder, where to even begin with you now. SMB support is just a horrible irritating mess for me now with shares randomly being inaccessible and failing with completely nondescript errors. It almost feels like a DNS issue as trying to connect via IP always works as a backup, however if I save a share as a favourite and select there rather than via the network list, that also works most of the time. This is consistent across all versions of SMB when connecting to Windows Server shares. Whilst I'm on the subject of Finder quirks. Renaming files without a default association defaults to highlighting (And often wiping) the extension, whereas files with a program associated doesn't. Who thought this was a good idea? Correct me if I'm wrong (hurr hurr), but auto correct has never been more overzealous than it is now, I'm fine with it jumping on actual typos, but it's acting like the thesaurus and grammar police, merrily stomping on my sentences and changing perfectly fine grammar just because it thinks that I want one word over another. If I delete a word that just got autocorrected and retype the original word in again, that should not be a cue to simply autocorrect it in exactly the same way again, especially if the original word I typed isn't red flagged in the first place. I'm almost certainly missing a bunch, these are just the first that spring to mind in my personal daily use. There are more problems that I can run into from an IT support perspective, time capsule used to be rock solid for me, now I don't even bother setting it up as it's just not going to be dependable, and this is backing up to Apple's own Time Capsule. Another favourite of mine is how awful recovery mode can get once you step outside of the expected box. Battery gone flat and lost your time and date? Having to use Terminal to fix this in 2020 is embarrassing, let alone needing to do this for large numbers of Legacy Macs via USB. Fusion drive array gone bad? That's not something I want to see dumped on my desk ever again. Another one that's gotten progressively worse is Macs with layers of duped APFS partitions that just don't want to go away. Everytime I have to boot a Mac from a Windows 10 USB just so I can hit it with a Diskpart Clean it really does make me cringe. It's pretty frustrating as my iPhone is a mostly flawless experience. It has the same aforementioned overly aggressive autocorrect, but I guess I'm just more sympathetic to that on the phone. The mail app can be a bit sluggish with gmail occasionally but eh, I can forgive that as well. It's still does the job I expect of it and doesn't get in the way or grate with repetitive niggles. I'm still running one of the prior Quad Core i7 Mac mini's and my upgrade path is looking pretty bleak from here, a 10gbe equipped Mac mini is mighty tempting, but hard soldered storage is hugely off-putting especially given the upgrades I've done to my current Mac over the years. Thankfully performance isn't an issue, it's still plenty quick, rather I suspect the integrated graphics will render it obsolete for MacOS updates long before it starts feeling sluggish for day to day use. So yeah, here's to holding out hope that Apple shove the interns aside for a bit and put some effort into polishing and refining what they have rather than shovelling more unwanted iOS features our way (and that it'll actually run on my Mac mini rather than pushing me to buy new hardware only to find it still has the same issues). Here's hoping =/ [link] [comments]

Alt-tabbing a full screen application question Posted: 17 Apr 2020 10:16 PM PDT New Mac user here with a question about alt tabbing from a full screen app. So let's just say I am watching a movie full screen while also messaging a friend. Alt tabbing from the app the movie is playing from causes the movie to swipe away completely and it brings me back to what I guess is the "space" where my messaging program is open, along with other windows I have open. Is there any way to alt tab from the movie to the messages app, and just have the messaging window displayed on top of the movie? Sort of like so I can message my friend while half watching the movie. It's a "feature" that Windows had (I know this isn't Windows, but I'm just wondering if it's possible). Thanks for any advice! iCloud drive "optimizing" my storage - problem Posted: 17 Apr 2020 09:52 PM PDT I recently reinstalled Catalina and I noticed that by default, my files [from desktop & Co.] get uploaded to my iCloud drive and removed from local storage. If I want to access a file on my Desktop for example, I have to download it from iCloud first and then I can access it. This is pretty stupid so... How can I turn off "optimize local storage" for my iCloud? [link] [comments]
Is there Column Browser on Music? Posted: 17 Apr 2020 03:45 PM PDT Just migrated to Catalina from High Siera, so far the Music seems far worse than iTunes. Is the Colum Browser still available still somewhere? What about the feature of showing the artwork next to the tracks? Do you seriously need to "Show Filter Field" every time for searching and is it possible to make it search the whole library instead just the currently selected playlist? If all this has been seriously striped out, is there some way the get the iTunes back, or is there some software close to iTunes available? [link] [comments]

Posted: 17 Apr 2020 04:05 PM PDT Hello I wondered if anyone could help me. I have a mid 2014 MacBook Pro (it has HDMI ports along with USB and thunderbolt ports). I'm trying to connect it to an older Samsung tv with a HDMI to HDMI cable to use as an extra screen while the lockdown is happening. I usually use an iMac monitor (thunderbolt to thunderbolt) and a secondary monitor at work (don't remember the brand) connected with VGA port to thunderbolt. These work fine. I was running Mojave and couldn't connect to the tv via HDMI to HDMI and stupidly upgraded to Catalina which I thought might fix the problem. Obviously it did not. I have tried the fixes I've read online - reset SMC and NVRAM as well as multiple restarts etc. Has anyone managed to fix this problem? I'm at my wits end and it's borderline impossible to do my work on the tiny screen! Other suggestions/workarounds are very welcome. Edit - HDMI cable connects a Windows 10 laptop to the tv just fine.
