Mac-to-PC cross-compatible external drive format options Posted: 19 Apr 2020 07:11 PM PDT Hi everyone. I would like to format a 4 TB external drive like the G-Technology 4TB ArmorATD to be able to use it with both my macBook and Window 7 PC desktop. From what I've seen, the only option for that is exFAT. Is there any better method I haven't discovered yet? Also, I've read some negative comments about exFAT not using journaling which can lead to data corruption if the drive is not properly ejected or looses power. Is this a significant problem though if I'm careful to always eject the drive before unplugging and take precautions like shutting down before completely loosing battery life to avoid power interruptions? Lastly, any speed/performance considerations for exFAT vs APFS or other unforseen problems I haven't considered? [link] [comments]
Anyone who has a 2019 MacBook Pro with a butterfly keyboard, How is it holding up? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:21 PM PDT I'm in the market for a new computer and right now the 2019 13' MacBook Pro is what I',m considering the most. I don't have the budget for a 16' MBP and I need better cooling and performance from their pro models. I know that there may be a new model coming out soon but my current computer is on its last legs so I'd rather not wait longer than I have to. I haven't found any recent news about it so that's why I'm asking. Thanks for any comments! [link] [comments]
Adding a heatsink to the MBA 2020, is it possible? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:50 PM PDT Just a thought. Is it possible to just install a heatsink to the cpu on the new MacBook airs? IDK much about tech, but I was wondering why it's not possible or what the issue with that would be. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:34 PM PDT Can someone let me know what the disk images helper is? It's funny because I force quit that, and now my mac is super quiet. On the activity monitor it showed CPU % 99. [link] [comments]
Charger stopped working, what should I do next? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:56 PM PDT I have a pretty old MacBook Pro (late-2012) that still works fine, I am a teacher so the only things I actually use my computer for are Microsoft suite and using the internet for emails. The charger that came with the computer stopped working last year, and me being cheap, I got an off brand one for $20. The cheap one stopped working after a couple months. I can't use my computer now because of the charger. Now this brings me to my question, should I: 1) get a new computer (I prefer MacBooks) 2) buy a new charger from Apple (which costs like $70) 3) buy another off brand charger and just hope for the best (any recommendation for cheap chargers if this is what you suggest?) Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Are the Latest Intel Chips causing the Latest MacBook Lineup to be Warmer than previous Iterations? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:09 PM PDT The MacBook Air 2020 and MacBook Pro 16" seem to have much more powerful (or should I say louder) fans than any previous MacBook before. It's a worrying trend, especially when these are Apple's latest offerings. Could Intel be the cause behind all of this? Perhaps the constant release of 14nm laptop chips, despite the increase in clock speed and core count annually? Would these new MacBooks be quieter if Apple were to adopt AMD Ryzen chips instead? Need help. Always get notification for update Apple ID. Posted: 19 Apr 2020 08:36 PM PDT I already know what it wants. It wants me to set up iCloud. I am anti-cloud. I do hard copy backups all the time. How do I make this notification go away without ever using iCloud? [link] [comments]

Resale price for a 2019 MacBook Pro 13 inch Two thunderbolt base model. Posted: 19 Apr 2020 02:36 PM PDT Last July, I bought a MacBook Pro 13 inch with the following specs for 1300 dollars: Intel Core i5 128 Gb Storage 8Gb Ram 2 ports How much would this go for on the resale market because I am looking to buy the upcoming 14 inch model. IS it bad to leave your MacBook charging all the time? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 08:30 PM PDT Obviously with school being cancelled I am basically on my laptop 24/7 without having to move it from place to place. I was wondering if your battery is constantly charge at 100% would it be bad for the battery health? or should I charge it then use it till it's zero. I've read from articles that it's uncertain. but if you like to give me tips on how to slow my battery from deteriorating that would be great :) Edit: I have a MacBook Pro 2019 if this does anything LOL [link] [comments]

Easiest way to upgrade Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with an SSD? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 02:40 PM PDT Hi everyone! I have an old 13" Mid 2012 Non-Retina MacBook Pro which I want to upgrade with an SSD and give it to my parents. It's running on macOS 10.14.6 Mojave right now. So what is the easiest way to do it without a SATA cable adapter? Note that I would prefer a clean install on it since I backed up most of their files and pictures. Is installing the drive and then updating via Option-⌘-R to the latest compatible version a viable method? [link] [comments]
[Advice] Just got the MacBook Air 2020 and... Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:54 AM PDT TL:DR MacBook Air 2020 getting hot with 4K vid Hi, I just got the Air 2020 on the 17th of April. So far, temps rise to around 60c -65c with normal tasks, is sometimes lower, but as soon as I run 4k video in youtube in Firefox (I try to avoid chrome), the cpu goes to 99c-100c (using intel power gadget to track it), and fans go to around 4,000 rpm. Fans don't do anything literally, cpu stays at 99c... I plan to use 4k video a lot as I always did with windows (with no issues).... it's not like I'm video editing or gaming, why is 4k vid making it so hot, and why the hell are fans not doing anything? I know the fans aren't connected to the heat pipes, but what the hell? TL:DR MacBook Air 2020 getting hot with 4K vid [link] [comments]
Help retrieving photos from a MacBook ca. 2011 model Posted: 19 Apr 2020 04:37 PM PDT Hey gang. My neighbor's father passed away a few years ago. They'd like to save family photos that are on the machine (was his work computer) but haven't been able to figure out the password. All they want is the photos. Anybody have an idea how they could? They've offered to let my daughter use the laptop even if we have to wipe it clean to use it, but if we could give them their Dad's photos I'd like to. Update: It's a 2008 Macbook. Macbook Pro 16" problems - INSOMNIA Posted: 19 Apr 2020 04:14 PM PDT Hey All, I've been experiencing some issues with my 5-month old, fully maxed out MBP 16". Wondering if any others are seeing the same problems, as I'm currently months deep into frustratingly unhelpful AppleCare correspondence: - Biggest problem is the laptop has insomnia. When I close the lid, it "goes to sleep", but only for a few seconds, before it wakes itself up while closed. Sometimes it's a few seconds after closing, other times its several minutes. It was hard to notice this issue at first because the Macbooks no longer have a backlit Apple logo. Also, the machining of the laptops are so tight and sleek these days, there's no light leak emanating from the opening of the laptop when closed. This problem went on for a few weeks before I really noticed what was happening, and I'm very nervous there was damage done to the 16" screen, OLED touch bar, backlit LED keys, and most importantly all the internal components. There were a few times I returned to my closed laptop only to find literally cooking with heat. As in worse than any of the other 4 Macbooks I've owned have gotten. - It seems that the computer dynamically switching between the two graphics cards is causing some havoc. The computer should auto-switch seamlessly for the best user experience, no? Instead, it appears rapidly switch (2-3 times a second) during normal system processes, and therefore not able to do it's thing. For example, when loading up a webpage with many photos using just the integrated Intel graphics card, it takes several seconds and scrolling is very chunky. When the computer is auto-switching graphics cards, it's even worse. When I default to using the discrete AMD Radeon card, it's faster but doesn't seem to resolve all the lag. I'm still seeing lots of chunkiness when resizing/moving windows and scrolling. - My apple bluetooth magic keyboard 2 is also quite laggy. There's a subtle but noticeable delay between keystroke and when the letter appears on screen. Also, occasionally the keyboard registers a single keypress as multiple of the same instance when I type. For example: I hit the spacebar once between words of a sentence, and it shows up as about 10 spaces in my sentence on screen. Not sure if this problem is with the MBP 16" computer, or the keyboard itself. I also notice decent lag with 2 other BlueTooth mice I've tried (2 Logitech, and 1 3DConnexion). For all the above, the lag amount varies from time to time but seems to be made worse when I'm moving quickly throughout my workflow. - Airplay from this computer is more unstable than my older machines. About once or twice an hour, it will switch back to computer speakers, and I need to re-select the airplay speaker from the output list in my menu bar. - I had the speaker popping issue, but that resolved with an OS update somewhere. - I'm pretty underwhelmed by the construction of this $5000 machine. It feels like the body is flimsy and bends when I pick it up. If I pick up with one hand, I hear a snap sound every time - not like something is broken, but like a screw is loose somewhere within the body, triggered by the flexing aluminum body. - USB C ports can be frustrating. Often I have to remount any peripherals for them to be recognized. - I haven't measured yet, but it doesn't feel like I'm getting fast read/write speeds over USB C onto a Samsung T5 SSD (cables are all rated properly). No noticeable difference between this comp and those 5+ and older. - I still can't reliably predict when the fan noise will ramp up to really loud. It's all over the road, independent of heavy or simple tasks going on. Anyone else experiencing issues like mine above? What did you do to resolve? I'm in a battle with AppleCare as we speak. They recognize the issues, and I've replicated the above symptoms for them in person. At this point, I need to relinquish my computer for a week or more for them to ship out and repair, which I simply cannot afford to do around my work demands. Needless to say, apple won't offer a loaner, and they give little confidence that the computer wouldn't be returned to me bombed back to the stone age with a clean installed OS. With Terabytes of data sync'd to online platforms like dropbox, Citrix...etc, and also with a 4 TB onboard SSD, the process of backing up and restoring is going to be a huge hassle still. I'm seriously bummed about all this. Especially considering it's a $5K computer. Especially since I've spend tens of thousands with the company over the past 20 years Come on Apple. the dream that only lasted 1day ( faulty macbook air 2020) Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:42 AM PDT so after waiting 3 weeks for my new macbook air (I5 / 8GB ram / 256GB SSD) i finally received it last week, and this is how it went: Day1: unpacked it, installed all my software, updated to 10.15.4 and used it for a couple of hours. it was docked to my external monitor (1440p) and everything went pretty smooth, using office, chrome, MS teams, spotify, everything just went smooth as butter. Day2: i got home from work and turned it on, installed 2 more applications ( 1password7 and the unarchiver) and started surfing the web, music and whatnot. Everything was going great when all of the sudden the fan ramps up and the notebook shuts down. upon booting back up i get a message that the machine shut down because of a problem and showed a log. it was a kernel panic related to the cpu. a few minutes later it happened again and a few more times after that. sometimes it would crash again before i could do something. so i installed smc fan control to check the temps, it would crash with a temp of 60°c so no overheating. uninstalled the last 2 apps i installed and again, crashing. nvram and msc reset, still crashing. did a hardware check (by holding D upon boot) and there where no issues found. So i decided to do a reinstall of the OS. booted in recovery wiped the SSD and started the install -> rip crash. because i wiped the SSD internet recovery was the only thing left to do. i started it, it downloaded the image. got on the screen where i could start the install and it crashed. made a bootable drive with another mac -> can't boot because external media booting isn't turned on... so yh nothing more that could be done so i opted for a refund and send the machine back. now i don't know what to do. order a new macbook air or go for a mac mini instead. seems useless to have 2 desktops as i have a gaming pc as well. i have seen no other reports so i'm guessing it was an isolated issue. i didn't want to send it in for repairs cause i didn't want a brand new machine that was already repaired after 1 day of use. what would you guys do? Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:23 AM PDT Are there any side effects if I'm going to charge the iPhone using only mbp? I'm talking here mostly about charging at night, when mbp is slept and with charger attached. Much more convenient than using additional wall charger. I've had some battery issues in the older windows notebook but there I was using it when without charging. It really got the battery. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:41 PM PDT Hi everyone, I have a problem that you might help fix. I have a MacBook Pro 13" Retina 2015. It was bought with an upgraded i7 CPU and 16gb RAM. It only has 120gb storage on an SSD. Lately my MAC has started getting slower, and also the battery is in a state where it asks me to change it soon (not critical but not optimal either). The Mac also is a lot slower at startup and sometimes freezes after being in sleep mode for an extended period of time. This requires me to hard restart it by holding the power button in, until it turns off. Again, not optimal. Also it tends to overheat very easily. So my question to you: Do any of you know, if there is anything besides getting a new battery, that can help speeding up the Mac again? I also want to note that there is about 20gigs of available storage space left, so it shouldn't be the SSD's fault. [link] [comments]

Please suggest me an app to screen cast to tv Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:47 AM PDT Hello, My tv doesn't support airplay 2 but I can cast stuff to it via Google Chrome or elmedia player without a single problem. Which is great, but sometimes I want to mirror other things that cannot be mirrored via chrome or the elmedia player. For example, this page I have tried some apps, airparrot, juststream beam airserver and none of them worked for my needs. they couldn't even discover my TV. All the devices are connected to the same wifi, without vpn. Or put it this way, when the apps I listed on top cannot discover my TV, chrome can. So, I believe what I need is a software that actually works. None of my macbook's, ipad or iphones that we have can connect to our TV. It is smart, but just doesn't support airplay 2 [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:27 AM PDT Sorry if this is the wiring thread!
