    How can i fix this

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:05 AM PDT

Hello, hopefully I have the right group...

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:24 AM PDT

I have a 2009 iMac 24inch that I want to use as a tv monitor. I would prefer to use it as the sole monitor as in connecting it directly to the cable box. I have a Mini Display Port to HDMI connector and an HDMI cable. When I connect my cable box to the iMac nothing happens (which isn't surprising since I figured I'd need to use a certain app).

I have googled on if this is possible and a lot of results say to use Target Display Mode and that this will only work with the 27inch. TDM isn't showing up in my applications folder nor the App Store and I do t know where else to get it.

I'm not very tech savvy but I'm thinking it's 2020 someone must have figured out a workaround. So is there anyone out there with advice or a solution on how to do this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hopefully unbiased opinion needed, should I switch from my new-ish chromebook to a macbook?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:16 AM PDT

I have been a windows user a majority of my life and bought a Chromebook less than a year ago for my grad classes. I'm realizing that the more I use it, the less I really enjoy it. It's a good looking computer (not to mention relatively cheap) but the ChromeOS system is just too far behind. I'm not a fan of the app store and the limitations that come with it. Plus, for programming it's not the best since it's built on Linux and requires me to learn more than I need right now. I've been figuring it out, but I'm thinking it might just be better for me to buy a new laptop instead of driving myself insane with these shortcomings.

The main issue I have if I do buy a new computer is that I have no idea what I would use my chromebook for after that.

Which MacBook should I get for college?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:40 PM PDT

Hey all! Next year is college and I've been saving up money for a computer and I'm thinking of buying a MacBook. I'm studying film so I'll most likely be using this computer to do some editing, writing, web browsing, etc. I want this computer to last me through college and some time after. Would the MacBook Air be a good choice? If so what which specs would work?

    Thanks!

New MacBook owner... Is there any reason to get an iPad now?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 09:22 PM PDT

Just picked up the MacBook Air the other day

Is there any reason to get an iPad now or is it redundant?

Just don't want to waste cash now seeing that the economy is slowing down.

If there is a good logical reason to get an iPad with a Macbook at my side, please advise.

    Doubts

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 02:48 PM PDT

Hello! I'm going to study marketing in september and I'm in need of a new laptop. I saw that they updated the MacBook Air and it seems really good. Now the problem is that I'll probably have to use a lot of MS Office, which isn't a problem to run on Windows, but I'm scared that it may not work for Mac. I rarely game, and if I play something it's just Minecraft, so I was also wondering if it can run that at a decent framerate?

Downgrade? (2019 Pro to 2020 Air)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:38 PM PDT

I currently have a 13 inch 2019 MacBook Pro and a desktop gaming computer.

I am about to go into college next semester, and have been hearing tons of good things about the 2020 Air. I obviously don't need any laptop that is too powerful as all I will be using the laptop for is notes, school work, light Photoshop, etc. Something about the thin and light form factor of the Air is appealing to me and it doesn't seem like it will be any slower for what I use it for.

My 2019 Pro is fine but the keyboard is just so bad... the Touch Bar I could go either way on. It's the 8GB/256GB version.

If I switch I would get the 16GB/512GB Air... would this be a downgrade?

    Refurbished 13"

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:54 PM PDT

My parents were fortunate enough to receive $1000 for a new laptop, so they want to purchase one for my younger siblings (elementary) that will last them a long time. I think MBPs are great. First uni laptop was the 2017 base 13" model and now I have a 16" so I gave mom my 13" and she loves it. Easy to use for all the non-tech people at home including the kids.

Is $1269 a good price for a refurbished 2019 MBP with 256GB storage and 8GB ram? I think RAM size is fair given that it's for elementary students so my question is mainly if the $130 discount is good or too small.

    Opinions needed (MacBook Air 2020)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 11:29 AM PDT

I'm a senior at a university that has gone online for the rest of the semester. I have an early 2015 MacBook Air that is not doing too hot in terms of managing zoom, my tasks, etc at the same time so I figured it's time to upgrade. I'm going to be an elementary school teacher next year, so I was just going to get the 2020 air with the i5 processor. However, my current computer is seriously shitting out and it says expected delivery is April 20-27 which is my finals week and then I'm done with school till fall. But, if I did the base version, it'd be here next week.

Basically, in short, should I be prioritizing the upgrade above delivery because it'll make that much of a difference, or in the grand scheme of things it's not a dealbreaker and I should just get the base model sooner. I'm truly stuck — please help me out!

best macbook for an undergrad cs student?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 04:56 PM PDT

Will the new macbook air with 16 gb of ram be good enough for computer science, or should i go with a macbook pro? I want around 512 gb of storage, but these upgrades start getting expensive on a macbook pro. I also want to do some light gaming, but I'm willing to use an online cloud service like stadia/geforce now.

    Spilled soda on 2015 MacBook

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 04:49 PM PDT

I spilled almost a whole soda on my MacBook keyboard. Computer works fine but my keys are now sticky. Usually I use an external monitor and keyboard so it's not a huge problem but I was curious if someone could direct me on how to clean/fix this problem. Every video I find just tells me how to fix the key stick problem due to debris. Thanks in advance!

How to get log of data transfer from MacBook

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 04:07 PM PDT

I noticed over last 24hours, my ATT gateway has my one of my home MacBooks downloading 30+gb.

My daughter has used it for school streaming/zooming etc but still seems too high of data transfer so I'm obviously concerned of either some hacking/malware. I haven't used this MacBook in a while so have to check if it could also be background process uploading photos maybe google photos or amazon photos.

Is there a internet data transfer log in MacOs or perhaps one I can install?

    Thanks!

Spotlight search results constantly in flux

Spotlight search results constantly in flux

I'm running OS 10.15.2 Catalina. 2017 MacBook Prio 13-in (touchbar model)

I'm getting pretty annoyed with Spotlight's search priorities, and it looks like they simplified Spotlight settings removed the option to prioritize certain applications over others. Spotlight's top hits seem to change from day to day now which is annoying. This morning typing in "out" would bring up Outlook as the first hit, but now it's bringing up Messages as the top hit.

Another example is for a while typing in "spo" stopped making Spotify the top result, and instead was bringing up some random document that I couldn't even locate the word/letters "spo" in. Seems the results prioritization learns or updates itself based on app info/data maybe?

I use Spotlight a ton, mainly for application access. I use a lot of different applications for work, and am constantly jumping around. I do also use the CMD + TAB option for cycling between applications that are already open.

Is there a solution to fix its priorities?

One or two cables for external monitor?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 09:00 AM PDT

MBP 13 with touchbar 2017 Was just given an MSI Optix MAG272 display

Currently running a Satechi dongle to plug in via HDMI. Monitor supports USB C input and output. So I am charging using the cable from my power adapter

Can I use one cable to charge and run the display a la the expensive LG monitors from Apple? Or shall I stick to two and refine what I have: - shorter USB C to USB C cable for charging - HDMI to USB C for the display

    Thanks reddit :)

Is it worth it to get a 2020 MBA?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I like the sidecar possibility let my iPad be a wireless second screen. My 2017 MBA doesn't support it.

My 2017 MBA has 2.2 GHz dual-core i7 processor and works beautifully.

Wondering if the 2020 model has more to offer than Sidecar.

Macbook Pro is "raining" Pixels on my screen - Need a fix

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:26 PM PDT

    Hello!

I have a Late 2013, Macbook Pro Retina (specs below). Just yesterday I opened my laptop that has been working flawlessly, to see what looks like pixels are raining sideways from the top left of my screen, to the bottom right (see video for reference). The same day, I had a battery notification pop up for the first time stating "replace soon". I'm not sure if these two events are at all correlated, but my batter has well over 1,000 charges at this point, so I do likely need to have that replaced. Has anyone had a similar problem or found a fix for the screen issue? I'm thinking it may be a graphics card or possible loose hardware inside?

    Specs:

Processor: 2.3 GHz Quad - Core Intel Core i7

    Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Storage: 500 GB SSD PCI Drive (I had this installed less than a year ago)

TLDR: My macbook has pixels raining sideways across my screen. Does anyone know of a fix or does a trip to the Apple store my only choice?
