    Benefits to owning a Macbook?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 06:12 PM PDT

    Greetings r/macbook!

I just thought I'd stop by and ask what are some of the advantages and benefits of owning a MacBook. For context, I have an iPhone and an iPad currently but for computers I have always used Microsoft/Windows, but I am looking to soon upgrade to a new laptop, and I'm considering trying out a Mac for the first time with the new 2020 MacBook Air. I will still definitely use windows PCs often, as when I work I am provided with a windows based laptop (as I'm a public school teacher). Anyways, what key points should I consider as reasons to switch to Mac for my personal laptop? Thanks for the help!

    MacBook Air Heat Issues

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:03 PM PDT

Hi, I recently purchased a 2020 MacBook Air (i5 model) to replace my 2016 non-touchbar MacBook Pro (also i5 model, but only a dual core).

I've noticed that the Air gets considerably hot doing fairly simple tasks (playing YouTube videos or sometimes just browsing reddit). I decided to measure this compared my Pro today and it seems like the Air runs quite a bit hotter.

My test was to play the same 45 minute 1440p YouTube video using Chrome on both laptops. I had no other applications running on either and both were sitting on the same surface.

After 45 minutes the MacBook Pro was measuring 45-50 Celsius and the Air was measuring 80-85 Celsius. The MacBook Pro fan was not spinning and the Air's fan was spinning at 2700 RPM. I was mainly using "Mac Fan Control" to measure temperature and fan speed, but confirmed the measurements with "Turbo Boost Disabler" which also shows CPU temp and fan RPM.

Is the quad core too much for the little Air to handle? Anyone else having this issue?

Any recommendations for laptop case that doesn’t show fingerprints/smudges? (MacBook Air 2019)

My MacBook fell and I’m wondering if it’s ok, or if I’m worrying over nothing

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:03 PM PDT

I've got a 2019 MBP. I try my absolute best to treat the thing with care. I do have AppleCare. It was in a tomtoc case, the blue one with orange logo and accents. I dropped it about 24-30 inches off the ground. I'm pretty sure it landed on the bottom parallel to the bed. I opened the case and have closely inspected the laptop. This has been a few days ago and I absolutely can't find any marks or any signs of damage whatsoever. Maybe I'm just being too overprotective but I'd like to know if anyone else's MacBook has taken a little fall and been ok.

The case is foam lined, it feels like memory foam and the case is quit protective. It fell on a wooden floor with carpet on top.

    Here's the case - https://www.reddit.com/r/macbook/comments/f0v0p7/tomtoc_2019_macbook_pro_13_inch_sleeve_works/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Would a refurbished MacBook Pro 13 Retina Mid 2014 last another 4 years

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:11 PM PDT

Was considering buying a Macbook Pro Retina 13inch Mid 2014 8GB 256gb which comes with a new battery for $550AUD. Was just wondering if it would last for the next 4 years for basic OneNote, Excel, 4-8 tabs open at once on safari. Nothing too big.

ELI5 difference between Pro and Air?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:26 PM PDT

I need a new laptop. I have a Pro, but I like the idea of the Air being thinner, lighter and cheaper.

I keep reading that the Pro has better specs and is more powerful. Can someone explain what that means? I'm not tech savvy.

My main usage is Chrome with lots of tabs open, I download torrents a lot, watch movies and TV shows and use some other apps like Notes and OneNote.

    Thanks in advance.

    2020 or 2019 MacBook Air?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 03:31 PM PDT

I'm planning on purchasing either a 2020 or 2019 I5 MacBook Air. It's going to be my first laptop so I want to last me a couple of years. I'm a college student I'm only going to use it for writing essays, watching YouTube and streaming Netflix. Although due to quarantine I am planning on learning some basic coding. What do you recommend?

What is the best filesystem to use with Synology from a Macbook Pro based on your experience?

I have had problems with AFP, SMB and NFS. I sometimes get errors and problems while moving files, sometimes loading the directory takes ages.

I would love to hear your personal experiences.

How do you get rid of Search Baron?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 06:39 PM PDT

I've had search baron pop up on my MacBook Pro 2015 since last month and I have no clue how to get rid of it! Can someone please help me. I'm a college student and it's made it so I can't even attend my zoom calls. I've done everything the websites have send and I'm not finding weird apps or anything. I'd be so thankful for some help. This is happening on every search engine I have including chrome and safari.

MacBook Pro 2017 13-Inch Screen Issue

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 06:24 PM PDT

Whenever I open my laptop lid further then 80 degrees, the screen goes black even though the keyboard is still lit. The screen does not go back on until I close the lid completely and re-open. Over the past two days the issue has gotten increasingly worse and am quickly losing degrees in which I can open the lid. After some research I saw that this is a hardware issue. Unfortunately, due to coronavirus many stores are closed and I have not been able to get an estimate for how much a fix would cost. Does anyone have any idea?

    MacBook Air dimming issue...

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Hi! Not sure how this happened, but my mac has been a little strange lately with dimming. The screen brightness is always maxed out. When I try to use the keyboard shortcut (as well as the slider in settings) to lower the brightness even one notch, it completely goes dark as if I have turned off the display entirely. Any ideas?

    Should I get a 2017 Macbook Air?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 01:35 PM PDT

I'm currently in the market for a new laptop since my 2013 ThinkPad stopped working; and due to the fact that literally all of my other devices (my iPhone and iPad) are from Apple, I really want to switch over to macOS.

The problem is that I'm a sophomore in high school, and I'm relatively broke, so the best deal I found on a Mac was the 2017 Macbook Air, which I found refurbished on Amazon for $615. My aunt also reached out to me and said that she could sell her 2012 Macbook Air to me for $520, but I'm worried that it won't last me that long, since I need something that can last me through high school.

I'm also thinking about getting the 2015 Macbook Pro if I can save up a little more money, but since I'm stuck in quarantine, I need a laptop sooner rather than later. Same goes for the 2020 Macbook Air, but I heard that has overheating issues, so I don't know if it'd be worth it.

Should I get the 2017 Macbook Air? Or should I get something different?

Setting up external monitor with Macbook Pro

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 04:53 PM PDT

Hi all, I recently purchased the Dell Ultrasharp 24" monitor (U2419H) to go with my Macbook Pro.

I plugged the monitor in and I'm feeling slightly disappointed in the quality of the screen. It seems blurry, but it's possible I just don't know what I'm doing.

    Three things:

    1. How do I get the best screen display from macbook pro to monitor? What do I need to do? So far I plugged in my own HDMI cable and that's it. Do HDMI cables vary in quality?
    2. There are other cords but I can't tell what they do when I plug them in. Are they necessary? It's not clear in the instructions.
    3. How can I make my setup easier/best display quality? Do I now need a docking station?

I'm feeling slightly discouraged/disappointed and it's not easy for me to return right now because of the pandemic. I didn't realize I could get the Dell U2419HC (USB-C) which would have reduced the number of cords I need (UGH, sigh).

Is there anything I might be overlooking? Any advice would be much appreciated, or if you can point me to a good tutorial.

    Dust under screen

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:53 PM PDT

    Hi

So today while cleaning my screen i noticed there was a small speck of dust under my screen right in the middle of the display.

Laptop is a 2016 macbook pro 13 inch, I was wondering how much something like this would cost to repair?

I did have the screen replaced once in 2018.

Plan on selling it soon and i'm worried people might be put off by dust under the display.

I was wondering if you could setup the touchbar so that if you don't touch it, it'll turn off. Then to use it again, tap to wake

    Is this possible?

    thanks :)

    Macbook Pro 15" 2017 won't power on

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:24 AM PDT

Just checking for suggestions before I decide if I should try getting it repaired or sell as "parts or not working".

Purchased this Macbook Pro 2017 (A1707) very cheaply which was listed as "won't power on". I've gone through the steps on this page, including resetting the SMC, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204267 and still nothing.

I've tried different USB-C cables and AC Adapters, also with no luck. I've popped the bottom case off just to see if there was any visible liquid damage, and it looks very clean. Also no indication from looking at the keyboard that it had any liquid spilled through. Of course, doesn't mean it didn't, just what I can see easily.

Any other suggestions I can try?

Can someone please explain why my Macbookpro 2019 runs worse than my Macbook air 2014?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:17 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I am not super tech savvy, so I would like some clarification about what makes these devices run so differently. I have a 2014 13" Macbookair that I have used frequently for 6 years and was looking to upgrade. It's a 1.7 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8G of ram, 256G SSD running Mojave. I use my computer for mostly web browsing/work, I have almost no programs that I run other than my browser, but the big intensive thing I do is run webinars for 500+ people. They are often live demos of a website (not a deck), so I regularly have 2-3 Chrome windows open with about 10-12 tabs on each. I never really have any issues doing this on my air, my computer does not heat up or slow down, but I figured 6 years later it's about time to upgrade.

I bought a 2020 Macbook air before returning it within a week. It would get SUPER HOT while doing very basic things on it, and I thought maybe it just wasn't enough power so I sent it back and got the pro.

Enter my 2019 Macbookpro that I just got directly from Apple. It's a beast: 13 inches, 4 Thunderbolt ports, 2.8 ghz Quad Core Intel Core i7, 16G ram, 1Tb memory running Catalina. I've had it for about a week. The things heats up like crazy even having 1 chrome window open while video chatting with coworkers. It seems to run even hotter and slower when it's plugged in, but when not plugged in, the battery lasts maybe 4 hours. It is running photoanalysisd a lot because I synced my cloud of 12k photos, but read that this is normal now. Is this something that goes away eventually?

I only have 3 tabs of chrome running in one window and it says it takes up 10G's of memory. How is that possible? When I have chrome open in multiple windows with a ton of tabs on my air it says it uses 1.4% of my CPU. On my new pro, it's 22.5%, and it has a ton of memory taken up.

    My questions are:

    1. Does it run hotter and have worse battery BECAUSE it's a 2.8 ghz i7? If I got a worse processor would it run cooler and last longer?
    2. Is this normal? Or is there something wrong with it? When I look online, everyone says "Chrome is horrible for Mac's don't use it". But I have for so long with 0 issues. Why is that?
    3. Whenever I look at what to get online, it always talks about "Are you video editing or programming?" But what I need it to do is run a ton of windows and tabs at the same time as video chatting/streaming. My job is heavily integrated in the Google environment so it's a must. What specs should I be looking for for something like that?
    4. The 13" is a high priority for me because I travel so much for work and even from room to room in my office/home, the portability is a must. Is this just how the new 13"'s are? For the amount of money I spent, I would expect to be at least AS good as my 2014 13" macbook air.

Thanks for reading, and any advice would be helpful!!!
