Wifi Phone Call Animations for iPhone

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:41 PM PDT

So not a help topic, just a wish. I really love the love the phone call animation of the wifi call that MacOS uses, and I wish they would incorporate that into iOS at some point. The only time we would see it is on speaker calls or using AirPods, but it's just so clean seeing bars modulate with the sounds.

SMS stopped syncing to macbook but imessage still works

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 06:48 PM PDT

UPDATE: Simple fix and I'm an idiot sandwhich- For SMS to appear in Messages app in macOS, you need to have Text Message Forwarding turned on in your iPhone. It can be enabled by going to Settings apps → Messages → Text Message Forwarding on your iPhone and turning on the switch which appears against your macOS device in the list. I'll leave this here for the next time I google this.

Tried googling but google cant differentiate between sms and imessage so it thinks im asking how to get the messages app to work in general. Recently with a new iphone, SMS texts (green bubbles) stopped syncing to macbook messages app. imessage still works fine though. Any ideas?

Fixing the "Update Apple ID settings" "Setting up Icloud" loops

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:19 PM PDT

Since getting a new Iphone SE the other day (IOS 13.4.1) I got an odd error where it stated some features wouldn't be available unless I signed in with my apple ID again even though apple pay, buying apps etc was all working fine and I was already signed in.

Whatever features were disabled weren't ones I obviously used so this would be fine if not for the annoying as hell pop up badge every so often on my lock screen...

When going to sign in to "fix" this problem it would just sit on a screen saying "updating Apple ID settings" and then just spin for hours. The usual advice of "log out and log back in" would lead to it getting stuck at trying to configure ICloud when you logged back in, which is the true villain of this piece and whats causing it behind the scenes.

I spoke to Apple support but they didn't have a scooby either so if your going through the same clusterf*ck then this is how I *eventually* fixed it for me. I tried a whole load of Turning it off and on again logging in and out/praying to satan this is what eventually worked.

    1. Removed all devices that I don't currently use at https://appleid.apple.com/#!&page=signin
    2. Enable and disable Icloud keychain from the phone (enabling takes you to the same error loop as the Settings badge does) cancel out once it starts spinning/hanging
    3. Make sure iCloud keychain is disabled on any devices you have currently signed in
    4. Sign out of your apple ID entirely on the phone
    5. Hard reset/powercycle the device (YOU MUST BE LOGGED OUT OF ICLOUD/APPLE ID OR IT WILL NOT FIX relogging in and out of Apple ID without powercycling isn't enough)
    6. log into the device as normal, then log into your Apple ID
    7. Enter your password like you've done a thousand times in the loop but hopefully this time it is able to do what mine did and break through to the next steps where it will ask your phone (and if you have one) laptop password.
    8. You can then re-enable Icloud keychain on all your devices and hopefully not have to see that annoying popup, fixing it on the phone fixed it across my laptop too.

Good Luck and I hope this saves you some time...and I also hope Apple figures this out soon as this problem has literally existed like 5 years in various forms.

2011 Macbook Pro won't update or install iMovie

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:44 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.6. I'm trying to get iMovie. When I try to download it from the app store, it says 10.14.6 or later is required. App store shows OS up to date, and trying to download Catalina says This version 10.14.4 cannot be installed on this computer. I tried downloading Movie 9.0.9 from apple website, but it says a previous version of iMovie is required for this update.

    Yikes... Any help?

    Thanks.

Stupid Question of the week: £ on a US keyboard?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:16 PM PDT

I apologise if this is a really dumb question but is there a way to get a £ sign on a US keyboard, I bought one along with a new monitor without realising and it's annoying.

Right now my stupid solution to my stupid problem is a shortcut on my iPhone home screen called "Pound Me" that simply adds a £ sign to its clipboard and then I paste it onto the MacBook. It works, but I figured there might be an easier way.....

Crack iPad Pro 2020 12.9 two weeks of usage, Apple care ? Warranty ?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:51 PM PDT

    image of the crack

Hi, I realized tonight that there was a crack on the microphone side of my new iPad. It is the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 inch.

I didn't drop it, could it be a flaw of the screen ? It is right were I put my thumb.

I didn't have a protection screen cause I'm waiting for it... And I'm quite depressed.

Is it be covered by warranty ? Apple store are closed in my country because of covid now is there another way to have it check ?

If not, does Apple care + cover it even if the screen works perfectly ? I'm afraid that the crack is going to expand, and I got 45 days left to buy Apple care +. Is it worth it with this crack ?

    Thank you !

I have no idea what just happened!

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:24 PM PDT

I was just on my MacBook Pro when i noticed a tiny horizontal line going across the very bottom of the screen. It looked like it was glitching slightly so I restarted my computer and it was still there. I thought it must've always been tgere and i just hadn't noticed. I went about my business until my mouse stopped moving. I thought the computer must just be slow at the moment so I'll just give it a few seconds. But then the whole screen faded to black. I thought I was being hacked or something. The screen didn't fade to black all at once either. It consumed the screen from the outside in like it was on fire or something. I've never seen anything like it in my whole life. I immediately went to look up what happened and I couldn't find anything that fit my story. I couldn't even find a way to properly shut down the computer. All the methods I found require a power button, but my MacBook is the 13" version from 2016 I think with the touchscreen built into the keyboard which doesn't have a power button! I'm going to leave the thing on until it eventually runs out of battery so then I can try to start it up again. I'm panicking right now and I'm afraid I'll have to buy a new MacBook! Somebody PLEASE help me!

2019 iMac won't boot with new RAM

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:15 PM PDT

I just purchased a 2019 model iMac, it came in today. Ordered with 16GB (2×8) RAM to expand from the stock 8 (2x4). Ordered RAM from Apple (I know I know, more expensive than third party, but in case it had issues I wanted to make sure I could return it to them without issue.) Made sure it was compatible per their website when I purchased it.

Computer works fine with the stock RAM. When I add in the 2 8gb sticks then it won't turn on. I tried waiting the 30 seconds (actually tried closer to 30 minutes at one point just in case). Tried multiple configurations (4 8 8 4, 4 8 4 8, 8 4 4 8, etc), tried only the 8gb sticks without the original, basically any configuration I could think of. Only working with RAM it came with. Doesn't matter which slots the original 2 sticks were in.

I contacted support and they said take it to a technician....in the middle of COVID-19 🤦‍♂️I'm in a rural area, can't take off from work to run half way across the state to take it to a tech that's not even an Apple store (those are closed here), and definitely don't think it's a good idea to go to the part of my state that has the highest concentration of COVID...

    Any suggestions?

Early 2015 Macbook Pro Retina with blank white screen - works fine in clamshell

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:07 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am working to fix an early 2015 macbook pro retina that has a blank white screen (backlight is fine) that does not change no matter how the screen is tilted. Full specs and description below:

    Specs:

    Early 2015 13" retina

    3.1 GHz Intel Core i7

    16 GB RAM

    Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536MB

    MacOS Mojave

    The Problem:

At first the screen was flickering and had green-ish colored bars running vertically but this could be corrected by changing the position of the screen a bit and not moving it (ie. closing/opening the laptop a bit more). After about a day of that the screen just went totally white and I am not able to get a picture on the laptop display no matter what I have tried.

    Attempted Solutions:

At first I thought it was the LVDS cable so I ordered one from ifixit but this has not corrected the issue. I do not have another laptop to test the cables on to confirm they are not both faulty somehow. The laptop works fine in clamshell mode and I have run First Aid on the disk (with no issues being detected) so I know it is not a hard drive issue.

I have also tried doing a safe mode boot, a single user boot, an SMC reset, and a RAM and PRAM reset but none of these have led to anything new. Still just the white screen. I am wondering what my next steps are to diagnose the issue that is causing this....currently my next step is to take some inspiration from Louis Rossmann and get a multimeter to start trying to find a short in the board somewhere (though I did not see anything obvious at first pass and this is not something I am comfortable doing yet).

I was hoping you guys would be able to steer me in the right direction! I tried to provide as much information as I could but am happy to answer anything I missed in the comments - thanks!

File System is read only on MacOS Catalina

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:03 PM PDT

So I user a program that stores a significant large file and must have constant access to. On catalina, when trying to point to this directory for this file/program I get the message "file system is read only"

I need a way to open this one specific folder if possible even for just this app to have the ability to read and write to this folder. Is there any way to do so? Path is

Macintosh HD> Users> Username XXX> bitmonero(which is the folder I want the program to have access to)

thing is I have another folder thats practically in the same location that the program has zero issues writing to which is located at Macintosh HD> Users> Username XXX> Monero > Wallets - which it can then create new folders here for new wallets that I choose to create/setup

iMessage on macOS refuses to open, but it isn’t greyed out?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:02 PM PDT

So I was trying to modify the ringtones .plist file on my MacBook. I needed to change the file permissions to do this, and while trying to restore it to its default state I believe I removed the "system"'s ability to read and write. It's completely gone from the list and I have no idea how to add it back.

I'm saying that because I think this is the reason messages preferences won't open. The option isn't greyed out, it just won't open after pressing the button. Trying to change a contact's ringtone causes contacts to crash. The .plist may be the problem—do you guys have any ideas?

Turning an old iMac into an external monitor for another iMac

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:15 PM PDT

    Corona virus project.

I had a broken late 2009 iMac in storage which I gutted for another project. Now I'm left with the monitor and case. I was thinking I might be able to reinstall the screen to make an external monitor (like in this ifixit tutorial)

    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+turn+a+iMac+Intel+into+an+External+Monitor/62918

but can't find any information on whether I can use such an external screen with my 2013 or 2019 imacs. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on this?

(and if this is the wrong forum for this question, what would be the right one?)

Why does streaming movies on the Apple TV App look choppy (MacBook Pro 16”, latest MacOS version) but it looks great when I airplay it to my tv?

As the title says, when I watch a movie using the Apple TV app it looks a little choppy but when I use airplay to watch it on my tv it looks great. Does anyone know why? It seems like I'm not getting past 30fps even when downloaded.

iPad Air 3 running iPadOS 13.4.1 shows Pointer Control settings in the search results, but the options are not present anywhere within accessibility

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:53 PM PDT

My mother received an iPad Air 3 around Black Friday last year, as a present for Christmas 2019. It has worked fine, and so has the Logitech Combo she received today from Apple. There is one exception, though: despite having the keyboard/trackpad connected using the Smart Connector, she is unable to find the Pointer Control settings anywhere within Accessibility settings, despite being on the latest 13.4.1 software. I verified that the settings do exist by visiting Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control on my second-generation 12.9" iPad Pro, which is connected wirelessly to a standalone Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2; this shouldn't make a difference, should it?

[Macbook 2017 Base Model/Mojave 10.14] Lines occasionally appeared.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:53 PM PDT

Okay so. These lines first started appearing when I would play video games and overheat my laptop. After a while I decided to leave a fan on behind it when I play video games which usually made my macbook overheat. Then I stopped playing those games and now they just randomly appear. I think its when I have my screen on for too long. Sometimes they go away, sometimes they get bigger. Most of the time I just close it for about 10-15 minutes as soon as they appear then open it back up and they are gone. This happens about 5 or 6 times a day, I use my Macbook for a large chunk of my day.

    Any ideas?

MacBook Pro 2019 screen glitch when iPhone touching

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:48 PM PDT

Hi all, I am looking for any advice regarding this issue I am having.

So I recently got my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) back from apple repair. I was having some light bleed in the bottom right corner so I sent it away and recently got it back.

I have noticed that when I rest my iPhone (XS Max) Against the display (kinda like a stand) the screen flashes purple lines. Now I at first thought this was a hardware issue. Probably something with a pinched display cable being affected by pressure on the screen.

Here is the kicker. The only time I can replicate this issue is when my phone is touching the display (in any area with or without pressure). I have tried (lighty) applying pressure with my hand, touching it with an eraser, and other items. I even tried touching it with my apple watch (series 5) and my brothers iPhone (X).

None of these items or attempts were able to replicate the issue. However, every time my specific iPhone touches the screen it glitches purple lines. I, unfortunately, don't have another XS Max to test it with. I have no idea why this is happening or how.

My thoughts: Maybe it is something with a magnet in the XS Max? Maybe my phone has somehow became magnetized? Maybe my type of Iphone exerts a very specific amount of pressure on the display?

I literally have no idea what could be causing this. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated!

How to revert OS X Terminal's keyboard shortcuts for changing windows?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:46 PM PDT

In older versions of OS X, cmd-[number] in Terminal would jump to the window with that number. In Catalina, it requires opt-cmd-[number]. I use these A LOT so having to hold down both option and command is really really bad. It changes Terminal from very usable to nearly un-usable for me. But I've been searching online and cannot find a solution to revert these hotkeys back to what they were. Is it possible?

If it's not possible, I need to abandon Terminal, and will take suggestions for alternatives. But I'm very used to Terminal, so I'm not interested in changing to a different terminal app unless it's not possible to change these keyboard shortcuts.
