Why has Apple never developed its own graphic design / photo editing software? Posted: 04 Mar 2020 01:11 AM PST I mean, Apple has developed its own software for music making (Logic), video editing (Final Cut), motion graphics (Motion), writing (Pages), and so on. Has always (or almost) offered an excellent alternative to softwares developed by other companies, such as Ableton, Premiere, After Effects, Word...allowing users to work in a 100% Apple environment. Spotlight calculator slow in Catalina Posted: 03 Mar 2020 11:40 PM PST After upgrading to Catalina, using spotlight to calculate numbers takes up to 5 seconds. Anyone know why it could be so slow? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2020 06:54 AM PST Not sure if this has been posted, however for the longest time the start up chime has been gone and even with command line voodoo it still did not work with late 2017 and later MACs, however somewhere down the line they re-enabled the functionality that allows it to play. Tested within current version of Catalina (10.15.3). Command: sudo nvram StartupMute=%00 [link] [comments]

Is there a way to show the Apple Mail icon and unread inbox in the menu bar? Posted: 04 Mar 2020 05:53 AM PST My organization's email account is not supported by many third-party email clients, so I have to use the native email client (goodbye beloved Spark). My dock is set to automatically hide, and it is so annoying that I have to manually check dock to see if there is a new email in the inbox. Is there a way to show the Apple Mail icon and unread inbox in the menu bar? I found two plugins that could do that in the past, one is Mail Unread Menu, another is Mail Satellite. The first one can not work in Mojave, and the second one is not supported by the developer anymore so I could get the latest version (the previous versions all require payment and you can not make payment to the developer anymore). Batch file like function for GUI Posted: 04 Mar 2020 05:18 AM PST Many years ago I was able to create a sort of batch file on a Mac for the GUI. I would tell it to record what I was doing, then it could save a series of mouse movements and clicks in a certain order to do certain things. This was an extremely old Mac, before OS X, but that's a useful feature that I am hoping is still there. Can anyone tell me something helpful? I am trying to help an older relative here. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Mar 2020 02:59 AM PST iMac 27" i9 and I had a problem with Folding at home I deleted it but it kept running in the background, of course the activity monitor won't let me shut down programs so it's still there, then mail went corrupted and just like that the screen went black. I am scared and panicking The boot screen now says to press any key to start but I've never seen that before in my life and I've made some Macs crash completely in many ways but I've never seen something like it. Please, tell me what you think happened and how to get out of this bad situation I am on Catalina [link] [comments]
Change icon in Preview "Favorites" column Posted: 04 Mar 2020 02:29 AM PST Hello, I'm customizing folder icons on my Mac. I've changed the icon of a folder. However, when I add the icon to the "Favorites" tab, it's showing the icon of the default folder. Is there a way to change the icon that appears in the tab? As seen here. I've changed the icon of the "git" folder, but in the favorite tab, it shows default folder icon instead of the icon I've chosen. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:31 PM PST Hey all I have 3 external hard drives containing Time Machine backups of various dates from an iMac over a few years of use. I'm wanting to copy off only the unique data from each drive, and not all the hard links, and then use Gemini 2 to scan and remove any duplicate photos I may have, so that I can place all my unique photos in one place without duplicates. The problem is that there's a lot of variance in data between the dates, for example Pictures > Album 1 will contain 20 photos at backup date 1, and 10 photos at backup date 2. I don't want to have to extract each date's backup with hard links, and scan dozens of copies of large sets of hard-linked data with Gemini 2. Is there a way I can extract only all the unique data from all 3 of my externals, in order to cut down on data transfer and scanning time? Should I simply clone each external to another drive with Disk Utility or SuperDuper!, and scan each clone with Gemini 2? Will it work around the hard links in finding my duplicate photos? Or what would you suggest? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments]
Mid-2012 Macbook Pro WiFi Issues & Battery Posted: 03 Mar 2020 11:36 PM PST Hey! Posted in /r/Macbookpro as well, but thought id try here also. I have a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro with 1TB SSD & 16GB Ram running macOS Catalina 10.15.3 & Windows 10 via Bootcamp. I was having issues where the Wifi randomly turns off, and I'm unable to turn it on again. Restart sometimes fixes it. Other times it has been working fine, turn it off for the evening, and back on again and WiFi is off and unable to turn back on. Wifi adapter doesn't show up in Network when all of this is happening. It's also happened in windows as well. Devices say the adapter is having a problem and is unable to be fixed. Basically the same as what is occurring in macOS. I did a fresh install of macOS as well to see if this has helped. Hasn't seemed to have helped :( Unsure if this is connected to the cause, but about a month ago the battery stopped charging. Plug the charger in green light straight away. macOS says no battery installed. So I've unplugged the battery to avoid it trying to charge a dud battery. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
Any way to get time machine backup data individually? Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:25 PM PST I have a MBP 2018 and a Time Machine Backup. The backups were working fine and all was good. I found out about a month later that I accidentally deleted some photos of my son who was 3 at the time and I really want to get them back since he's turning 18 this year. I know the photos library was backing up so I went in to Time Machine but I cannot restore anything before a certain date and I know the backup I need is before that. I have never really understood how TM works and why this happens. I am positive there are files backed up before then but TS won't get them. Is there any way I can go in manually retrieve and open the sparsebundle or whatever files by accessing the disk directly?? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

brand new airpods pro doing strange things Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:20 PM PST I bought myself airpods pro less than a week ago and i've already had a few problems with them - right airpod has made some strange noises when noise cancellation is turned on - right airpod also seems to die faster than the left one - when opening the case near my phone multiple times the red ! has appeared next to the right airpod however when i take them out of the case and putting them back in it disappears?? - connectivity to mac is really unreliable and although the airpods are still connected to my mac, it disconnects as the main audio output is it worth going to the apple store and if so will they be able to do anything? they're obviously still under the 14 day return policy so im not sure what to do [link] [comments]
I just bought my first MacBook Pro, any advice? Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:34 AM PST Hello everyone. I use Windows machines regularly, but in my recent job as a help desk technician prompted me to gain some practical knowledge of macOS so I can better help customers. previously I just stayed away from Apple products in general because of the ridiculous pricing, even for used devices, but I finally found a MBP on eBay that's within my price range. When I look at most mac reviews, it's usually from the perspective of video editing, but I really need to use it for common tasks. I bought a 2012 13" MacBook Pro. The hardware specs doesn't matter to me, as long as it can run a modern version of MacOS. I plan on using it as my primary laptop for about a month or two so I can get used to it's UI. I'd like to hear if anyone has advice for first time mac users. [link] [comments]
Copy Photos library of old MacBook Pro (mid 2010) to External Hard Drive Posted: 03 Mar 2020 01:25 PM PST I have an "old" MacBook Pro with High Sierra with over 100GB of photos and videos in the photos app. What is the best way for me to convert this photos library to normal files like (JPG's MOV's etc.) to store them on my External HDD and I can view them on other devices too like windows driven PC's? 2019 MBP running Catalina 10.15.3 - after reboot, wifi doesn't turn on Posted: 03 Mar 2020 04:14 PM PST Is this normal, I could have sworn on an older mbp, my wifi would turn back on automatically from a restart or start up. Currently I have to right-click the wifi symbol in the top bar and tell it to turn on. Is there a setting I'm missing? [link] [comments]

Find My problem and uninstalling apps Posted: 03 Mar 2020 02:57 PM PST Hello, I have a problem on my macbook pro 2019 with app Find My. As a screen shows, I am not logged in but the truth is, that I am. I can locate my mac via my iphone or web but with this app I cant. The second problem what I have is that I cant get rid of one app called Tuxtera. I removed it, also all debris but app keeps launching after startup. I also scanned my system with many cleaning apps but without any success. Thanks in advance for your answers. [link] [comments]
Command line advice for extracting several archives Posted: 03 Mar 2020 02:31 PM PST I have literally thousands of archives containing Amiga adf files that I've downloaded and want to unpack them all. Can someone please tell me the command line i need to use in terminal in order to extract multiple archives (mostly zips but some rars and i think gzips maybe) that are in multiple sub folders please? I want to make sure all files including hidden and system files are extracted (i read somewhere that unzip can't process system files or hidden files or something like that - is that correct?). I'd like the extracted files to be placed into folders (along side the archive they have come from) named after the archives (they don't necessarily get named after the archives name when i double click them). I also want the archives removed to the trash once they are successfully unpacked. [link] [comments]
Newton Mail shutting down (again) Posted: 03 Mar 2020 06:58 AM PST It seems like we only just got saved and Newton Mail was back form the ashes, and now it is about to be killed off again. Myself and every person i have recommended it to who uses it is gutted ....and it defies logic how something so good can be killed off, twice, with a paying user base. So, time to start this conversation again ... alternatives? Requirements would be: - simple clean interface [link] [comments] |
