Are these upgrades suitable for a non retina mid 2012 MB pro?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:53 PM PST

Should I upgrade to MacOS Catalina? Also, is there any way to make sidecar work on a early 2015 MacBook Pro retina?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 12:41 AM PST

My early 2015 MacBook Pro retina is running Mojave and I was curious if it's worth updating to Catalina or if I should keep Mojave. A lot of online reviews say Catalina is terrible/buggy but I wanted some personal input/suggestions please!

Also, is there any way to make sidecar work on my early 2015 MacBook Pro (since sidecar only works on 2016 models or newer)?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

    Reviving an older system

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:57 PM PST

A friend recently gifted me an older Mac Pro. I suspect it is from 2009 or 2010, it's the generation right before the trashcan.

It booted fine but still had the old user info on it, sadly this seems to be right before the "reboot while holding cmd + r" trick worked. I don't have his passwords, and I doubt he remembers the ones for this machine as he has been on a newer MacPro for the last few years while this was collecting dust.

I ripped the primary drive (an OCZ 3.5'' SATA2 ssd), plugged it into one of my Windows machines and did a hard wipe. I was reading online trying to find older file format that could be done from Windows and work for Mac OS. I know the OSX Journaled is recommended but I was reading that exFat should work, though I am unsure if that is true or not. Regardless the primary drive is now wiped and is exFAT format.

I have Yosemite installed on a USB using the createBootableMedia command, but of course there is more and the magic just isn't working. Ideally I want to boot that, as it is one of the older versions of MacOS I could find, and I suspect this thing is not going to be booting Catalina or Mojave, but it would be nice to get it up and running.

I would greatly appreciate any help on the matter. I know it's legacy gear, but it would be cool and I figure this is probably the best place to ask as a lot of the online resources are out of date, or just plain wrong.

How to get autocorrect to activate with Enter as well as Space

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:50 PM PST

Shorter version: Is there a way to fix this behavior? On my El Capitan device and an iPhone on iOS 12.4, just pressing enter as soon as the message is typed corrects the last word (as would pressing space, but that doesn't send it). On the Catalina device, I have to press space or wait for a second for autocorrect to give me the correction box before I can press Enter, otherwise I'll send a message with the last word misspelled.

On the Messages app on a Macbook Pro 2013 on El Capitan, when I type 1 word or at the end of a sentence, when I pressed enter, autocorrect would activate. For instance, If I typed, "Intersting," or "This car is intersting," it would autocorrect when I pressed Enter to send. However, on a Macbook Pro 2015 on Catalina, this doesn't work, and the message sends as is. Pressing the space bar before Enter kicks in autocorrect, and I can send afterward. However, on El Capitan, pressing enter would activate the autocorrect. If I wait for a second after typing the sentence, then the autocorrect box will pop up, and then pressing Enter will send the message correctly. So I have to press space to get autocorrect to correct the word and then press Enter, or I have to wait for a second after typing my message for the autocorrect correction to pop up, then I can press enter.

How to prevent a full screen application from minimizing when losing focus?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 06:51 PM PST

More specifically, I'm running a dual screen setup and playing EVE online in full screen (runs in Wine), everything on the second display is visible and I can move the mouse right over there but as soon as I click on anything on the second screen the game minimizes to the dock. Is there any way to prevent this behavior?

    MacBook Pro 2012

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:58 AM PST

Hi. Recently got myself a MacBook Pro mid 2012. I have upgraded the ram and also fitted a 1TB SSD. It's perfect, speedy and exactly what I wanted.. There's just one problem; the speakers.

Is there any way or any app that could boost them? They're so quiet and the only drawback of having an older MacBook for me.

    Thanks

How to stop mission control from automatically rearrange spaces?

How to stop mission control from automatically rearrange spaces?

    Hi,

Firstly, have you turned off "Automatically rearrange spaces based on most recent use" in the mission control preference pane? => YES that is OFF.

Let's take the following screenshot as example. When I open Slack, it stays on the right side of Desktop. Then, after a while using the Macbook, navigating around, switching apps, working, watching Youtube, chatting on Slack, etc, Slack just randomly moves to the left side of Desktop. This is annoying to me.

My question: How can I stop the Desktops and fullscreen apps from automatically randomly rearranging the order?

I just want it to stay the same order everything I swipe up. This issue happens with my 2019 Macbook, but never happens with my old mid-2015 Macbook.

    Thank you

    AirPlay Audio destination

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 08:31 AM PST

I'm pretty sure I've done this before but I can't figure out how I set it up.

I want to use my 2018 Mac mini as an AirPlay audio destination using the headphone port. I have an Airport Express that I can use for audio but the connection is really unreliable these days and the sound drops out a lot.

I thought there was a way in Sharing preferences to share audio but I'm not finding anything.

How to download Catalina from mac app store

    Spotify desktop app works terribly

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:38 PM PST

The Spotify desktop app on Mac is beyond bad. I have a 2017 13" MacBook Pro running Catalina. It's always been terrible, but since Mojave things have gotten significantly worse. With each update a there's a new error. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it doesn't solve anything.

Now, if I'm playing a song on Spotify and then pause the song and play something else on my browser, like a Youtube video or a song on Souncloud, when I'm done and I press play on Spotify again the song doesn't play and after a few seconds the "Can't play current song" pops up. The only solution to this is to restart Spotify, which is highly annoying and I have to do that constantly throughout the day. There are many other things that bother me but this one is by far the worst. Also, the media keys (play/pause/skip,etc.) don't work exclusively for Spotify and they start playing random things on the browser such as ads, videos on twitter, etc.

Does this happen to anybody else?

    Office 365 users – Outlook.app or as exchange in Mail.app and Calendar.app?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:47 AM PST

We're running on Office 365 at work, and they recommended everyone to install Outlook.app on iOS and macOS, which shows both mail and the calendar. However, I just noticed that I can just as well set up an exchange account, which gets me the mail in Mail.app and the calendar in Calendar.app. Maybe some people like to keep personal and work stuff separated, but I enjoy having a single app for all mails, and a single app for all events.

Does anyone have some experience comparing these two solutions? Since Microsoft is pushing their Outlook.app, I'm mostly wondering whether the Mail.app+Calendar.app solution is buggy or have missing features. We're a few hundred people at work, so features like booking conference rooms, inviting people to events, global contact list, etc, needs to work flawlessly.

    Remap mouse buttons/wheel

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:22 PM PST

Here's the thing: I bought a Lofree Mouse which I'm in love with. This mouse has a side wheel and buttons and these come with pre-assigned actions that I would like to override to more useful ones.

I am a BetterTouchTool user but it doesn't seem to recognise the side buttons/wheel, therefore I cannot remap them.

Is there any other way or app I can use to do this?

    Thanks in advance :)

Upgrading my OS X and using Time Machine for the first time

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:38 AM PST

Right now I'm using OS X Yosemite on a Macbook Air early 2015. I need to upgrade to at least 10.11 because I can't update many of my apps. Do you recommend upgrading to the latest edition?

Also should I also back up my stuff by hand if I'm using the Time Machine? How would I revert back my data after upgrading using my Time Machine backup? I'm always bit worried when it comes to automatic backups... and I've never used Time Machine.

    What problem does SIP fix?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:08 AM PST

System Integrity Protection (SIP) blocks off access to certain directories even for "root" users. It was introduced not too long ago.

What problem (practical or theoretical (i.e., never happened but could)) does it fix?

I'm coming to MacOS from Linux, where unfettered access to the entire computer is a given for root, so I'm curious to know why Apple implemented this.

EDIT: Thanks for all the replies. I've heard MacOS described as "extremely curated *nix" -- I'm starting to see why.

Setting up macOS to manage windows (mostly) like Windows

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:36 PM PST

I go back and forth between Windows and macOS and I continue to be more productive on Windows. I use an extra-wide external monitor and constantly change what's on each third on the monitor for reference. I may have a ten or so applications open with several instances of different web browsers open simultaneously. I think it comes down to this: in Windows I can see what's open and don't need to hold that in my working memory. You click a tab to hide or show that application. There are no spaces to think about or otherwise hidden information about the state of the machine.

So with all that said, I think I've finally set up my mac to function similarly after trying just about everything. Here you go, I've bolded the parts that I think are critical. I can go into why command + tab, command + `, and third-party applications don't solve the problem, but here's the solution IMO:

First change the way the application buttons work. This will be the hardest part to get used to. With BetterTouchTool remap:

    • leftclick green -> maximize window (as opposed to going to full-screen)
    • rightclick green -> zoom window below cursor (sometimes the other command doesn't work)
    • leftclick yellow -> activate/bring to front window under cursor - then - command + H (hides it instead of minimizes it)
    • rightclick yellow -> minimize window below cursor
    • leftclick red -> quit app under cursor (instead of "closing" and cluttering)
    • rightclick red -> close window below cursor (some apps need to keep running in the background)

    For the Dock:

    • Remove all permanent icons from the dock and use Spotlight, Alfred, or Applications folder on the Dock to load applications
    • uncheck minimize windows into application icon (this way you can easily see applications that should have quit)
    • check show indicators for open applications
    • uncheck show recent applications in dock

    Using TinkerTool:

    • Check use dimmed icons for hidden applications
    • Check use scroll wheel or scroll gesture to access contents (now you can swipe two fingers up or scroll up on a dock icon to get expose)

I recommend adding a way to snap windows. With Magnet:

    • optionally disable all shortcuts but enable snap windows by dragging for both halves and quarters - and - thirds and sixths

Then with BetterTouchTool create these window manipulation shortcuts:

    • option + 1 -> resize window to left third
    • option + 2 -> resize window to middle third
    • option + 3 -> resize window to right third
    • option + q -> maximize window left
    • option + w -> maximize window right
    • option + n -> move window to next monitor
    • option + a -> enter fullscreen if supported (you may still want this if you are working with just the laptop monitor)

This change will be important my final recommended shortcuts. I recommend this for many reasons. In Keyboard/Modifier Keys remap:

    • Caps Lock -> Escape.

These recommended application management shortcuts can now be made using BTT:

    • option + escape -> application expose (now this shortcut is one-handed and next to other similar shortcuts)
    • option + tab -> shift + command + \ (show tabs, now logically next to expose)
    • command + escape -> ^ + F4 (switch application across all spaces. this is now close to command + tab, command + ` if you must use those)
    • option + ` -> show menubar in context menu (useful to see menubar closer to application when using extra-wide)
    • command + up -> mission control and immediately show desktop preview (improved shortcut for this, but you don't really need the messy random mission control now do you)

    ~

I'd say now it's better than Windows although I do wish the menubar could be attached to each window and that we could get multiple unique dock icons for multiple instances for the same application. Scrolling over it works and option + ` works for the menu.
