Does anyone use their iPad connected to an external monitor?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:18 AM PST

I gave my MacBook to my sister after graduating college because I don't need it that much any more. But, I still need it. My iPad is sufficient but also pretty annoying (9.7") just due to the small screen. I do use with an external keyboard and I have an external monitor that I used with the MacBook. Has anyone used an external monitor as a desktop substitute? I'm concerned about the whole mouse/cursor issue, but I assume I could use the iPad on my right as sort of an awkward mouse right?

I'm mostly just applying for jobs and general internet surfing. Thanks for any inputs.

Any Flash Drives that don't need a powered adapter?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 01:11 PM PST

So I recently got the 7th Gen iPad. I love it and I'm eager to try out the new expandable media feature since I only got the 32gb version.

That said, I've gotten conflicting info on weather or not there are ANY thumbdrives that can work without a powered adapter. I'm happy to get a USB to lighting but the idea of needing to plug it in all the time sort of defeats the purpose of a portable tablet.

I'd also be fine getting a flash drive with a lightning port but all the ones I see online seem like they only work through a specialized app rather than by just using the files app in the OS. Any suggestions?

If I disable iCloud messages on my iPad, will disable it on my Mac and iPhone too?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:10 PM PST

I have an iPad Pro with only 32 GB of memory, and it's running out of space largely because of iMessage attachments. I don't really use my iPad for messages, so I want to turn off iCloud messages on it. I'm just worried that if I do so, it will disable it on my other devices and I'll lose my messages. I would think that wouldn't happen, but I just want to make sure.

Also, if I do leave it on, and then delete attachments on my iPad- Will that delete the attachments on the cloud too?

The UX around this stuff is really not that impressive.

How to create a DIY Magnetic Sleep/Wake for my keyboard case?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:18 AM PST

I currently have an iPad Pro 11 with a Zagg Slim Go keyboard case, but it doesn't have a sleep/wake function. So I purchased 50 small neodym magnets and magnetic field viewer paper to do it myself. I tried to use this guideline from Apple here (p 166), but I'm not really getting anywhere.

I'm not an engineer and I'm really struggling to know where to put the magnets to activate the sleep/wake function and which ones are really relevant for this purpose. I can't imagine I have to align all magnets illustrated in the Apple guideline.

    Can anyone help?

    iPad video/audio editing

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:36 AM PST

New to this Reddit but long time iPad user.

I've recently started getting into recording myself singing/playing piano, and wanted some advice on how to better create a setup using just an iPhone and iPad

I currently have tripod with my iPhone which will record video (without audio)

I then will use my iPad and connect a blue Yeti to record my piano playing and voice

So the questions I have are

    • What's the best way to connect a Blue Yeti mic to a 2019 iPad Pro 11"?
    • Is this the best set up to record, and then combine in something like iMovie later?
    • Any other tips or hints would really be appreciated as I'm quite a novie

    Thanks in advance

Is my mind playing tricks on me or is it more friction on the 11” with the new pencil?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 02:48 PM PST

So i tried the 11" with the pencil 2 at my local store the other day, and the first thing that strikes me is better feel when writing. I have used a pro 10.5 for the last 2 years and it's real slippery (don't want paperlike). Is there a difference or is it just me?

Fellow photographers, please help -- I edited some photos on the iPad with Snapseed, but I can't transfer them to my Lightroom library on a PC

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:21 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm using an original iPad Air with iOS 12.4.5 and a PC with Windows 7 and Lightroom Classic CC 8.1.

I've transfered some RAWs from an SD card to my iPad using the Lightning adaptor. Then I used Snapseed to edit those files.

Now, if you are familiar with Snapseed, you'll know that when it comes to saving/exporting your work, you have three options: "Save", which implies modifying the RAW itself with the possibility of coming back and editing the file again or undoing the changes (iOS wil ask for permission to modify the photo), "save a copy", which creates a copy of the RAW that will be editable too, and "export", which just creates a jpg copy with undoable changes.

Now, having edited some photos and then saved them with the first option, I want to transfer those modified RAWs from the iPad to my Lightroom library on the Windows PC.

Before doing so, I've checked the Photos settings on iOS. In the "Transfer to Mac or PC" option, you can choose "Automatic" or "Keep Originals" (according to iOS: "Automatic transfer photos and videos in a compatible format, or always transfer the original file without checking for compatibility).

I checked "Automatic" and then connected the iPad to my PC via USB. However, neither File Explorer nor Lightroom recognize the iPad as an available source. In fact, the iPad appears nowhere except iTunes. So I go back to the Photos settings and this time choose "Keep Originals".

Now both File Explorer and Lightroom recognize the iPad as a source and all the photos are there. The big problem, however, is that Lightroom can't seem to recognize the changes made on the RAWs by Snapseed. After I transfer my photos to the Lightroom library via USB, all I see are the original RAWs -- not the edited versions.

I'm guessing that the "Automatic" option from iOS will work only with Macs and their official Photos app (I'm not sure though). However, this Windows PC with Lightroom is all I have and definitely I don't want to lose the edits that I've already done on my iPad with Snapseed.

So the question is -- is there a way of transferring those modified RAWs to my Lightroom library without losing those changes? Something on the Lightroom preferences side maybe?

    Any help will be appreciated.
