How do I actually install the OS? Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:17 AM PST I just bought a 2007 macbook pro and it just boots into this utilities thingy and when I choose to reinstall mac os x el capitan it asks for an apple id, but when I fill it in it just gives me a popup saying "this item is temporarily unavailable, try again later" I've been fighting with this stupid thing all day, I have never used mac os and I have no other macos machines. I tried making bootable usbs with mountain lion and el capitan but they just give me a prohibited sign after booting from them. Please help. [link] [comments]

QuickTime supported file types Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:51 PM PST I normally use VLC for all my video needs but tonight I opened a file that nativity played using QT and was able to airplay it to my TV with just 1 click. I very much liked that and was wondering if there was any way to add plugins to support files types like AVI and MKV. VLC is fine I suppose but would be nice to just play movies with built in app and no extra AirPlay steps. I also noticed that VLC doesn't seem to support my ATV remote even with option checked but QT did without any issue. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jan 2020 11:42 AM PST Hi People's. Please bare with me as I try to explain. I'm a Windows user, but an iPhone user. For a few reasons, I'm planning to invest in a Mac, but it's unlikely to become my primary device, unless I fall in love with the OS, but I'm looking for the best of both worlds, if anything. I have a fairly capable windows machine, with a fairly decent CPU and 8 GB memory. Because of that, things like virtualisation, etc, will not be done on the mac. In fact, the way things stand now, I probably won't need to virtualise at all. I'm thinking of buying one second hand. I know already that I won't need an i7, and that I most probably won't need the pro, either. I can bootcamp an air just fine, and throw win8.1 on it if I have to. And yes, 8.1 will work with 4 GB absolutely beautiful, (had to use that config for almost 2 years...) But, I'm worried about memory. I don't want to over spend, but don't want to buy something that will get dropped next year either, (yet another reason why I'm pushing for an air, want as long support as possible). Because of support, and price, I'm looking at 2015, possibly, 2014 airs, with 5th or 4th gen i5s. And this is where I hit a dead end. Seeing as I got no MACOS experience, I have no ideas how well 4 GB RAM will work on it. I know I can get away with 4 GB on win10, as long as I disable memory split. For an average user of browsing, writing, messages, discord, Skype, etc, etc, nothing that would exceed the limits, (maybe a bit of audio editing here and there) would I be fine with 4 GB? Or would I be better off getting a 2014 for the same price with 8 GB, but I may lose support a year earlier? Or possibly anything else I should be aware of? Obviously I'd upgrade it to Catalina, and keep it up to date, I just don't know how the OS manages memory, and how apps crunch on it on the other side of the pond. I don't know how much tweaking can save up, either. Not to mention it being 2020, and we're going to get a new OS release, which slightly worries me with 4 GB as well. For the record, I don't care for it not being Retina, I want to avoid the butterfly keyboards, I want 13 or 11 inch, and want to keep the thing until Apple officially drops software releases, or until it dies, whichever comes first. Any tips or ideas would be appreciated. PS. If you guys think it's worth it, I could wait until I find a 2015 with 8 GB for the same price, but not sure if the additional 4 GB would benefit me. Filevault being de/activated instantly on macOS? Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:51 PM PST I've just bought my first macbook (air) and tried enabling FileVault. It did turn on but it only took a couple of seconds, which seemed unreallistically fast. After some googling I found people saying the process took them hours to days (granted their disk was rather full, maybe even used older hdd/ssds and my macbook just arrived today...) so I was wondering, is that normal? I ran the command "diskutil apfs list" in the terminal (also thanks to google) and the volumes with the name Macintosh had "FileVault" set to "Yes (unlocked)". The other volumes (recovery, preboot and vm) have "No" at "FileVault". I tried disabling it and that also only took a couple of seconds. Is that how it's supposed to work? Also, is there supposed to be a pre-boot password because it looks like I only need to log into my user account? Thanks fir any help. [link] [comments]

Wired Keyboard not working with USB dongle Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:42 PM PST Last week I got the new MBP and a Caldigit dock. That dock was for home use when I need a monitor and multiple hard drives so I purchased the Amazon Basics USB C to USB dongle which I had hoped to use at work for a wired keyboard and mouse. For the past two days, the keyboard and mouse work fine with the dock. Today, I got the dongle I get no connection with the keyboard. If I plug the mouse directly in, it works so I know the adapter is working. I know I COULD keep the dock hooked up, but I don't want to travel with it every day, I want it for home use only. I just want a dongle for the keyboard and mouse at work. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Parallels on Retina MacBook Air 8GB? Posted: 03 Jan 2020 06:36 AM PST I have a 2019 MacBook Air 8 GB that I am considering running parallels on so I can run a work application on it. Is 8 GB enough to run parallels? I don't do any heavy duty computing, just normal business administrative stuff and occasionally play old computer games. [link] [comments]

Bring back dashboard widgets on Catalina! WTF Apple! Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:54 AM PST I used the overlay dashboard constantly for a time saving toolset right at my fingertips. Particularly conversion tool, weather, calendar, calculator etc... Why is this useful feature gone??? 64/32bit issue? 3rd party issue?? What can I do to bring back these features in a pinch on Catalina ?? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:00 AM PST Hi. MBP 13" 2018 model with Catalina. Worked perfectly until I powered it off yesterday. Today it is stuck on the Apple logo. Was able to boot into recovery once, cant repeat that anymore. Only way to boot is to hold down Shift on power up. Once the boot is complete, everything look normal, all apps works, network is fine, external Magic keyboard works. Have tried numerous time to power off and retried different boot options, but the Shift key is the only working solution. Tried the Cmd+Opt+P+R too without any different result. I have a timemachine backup on an external USB disk. Maybe I should attempt to do a recovery, but I am reluctant to do this unless all other options are tested. I do have a local Apple store in my hometown here in Sweden, maybe I should go there and ask for help. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST Hey I know this isn't really MacOS but hopefully the admins won't kick this since it sorta relates. No one wants to buy the $5k Apple Monitor that replaces the Thunderbolt Monitor. At one time I found and purchased an LG monitor for a staff member that had speakers, ethernet, and USB-C. Now it wouldn't charge a MacBook nor did it have a webcam but otherwise it was good BUT I can't find/get it anymore. So what monitors are you all buying for MacBooks? [link] [comments]
