Why does zooming in Safari trigger responsive design?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 10:42 PM PST

Anytime I double tap or pinch to zoom, I have to re-frame what I'm trying to zoom in on because responsive design gets triggered on the website and everything gets shifted around. Who thought this was a good idea, and why? Other browsers don't behave this way, and seeing how it's pretty much every website, it's not on them either.

Need a MacOS keyboard shortcut -> Windows keyboard translator!

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:55 PM PST

I have a Mac Mini at home. It's my first-ever Mac, and I'm still getting used to it. I am using a Logitech G613 gaming keyboard with my Mac Mini. So, a Windows keyboard with a Mac OS. There are several keyboard shortcuts I would like to learn to do, but trying to find and figure out which keys on a Windows keyboard are the correct keys for a Mac OS is frustrating. I've figured out the really simple ones such as copy/paste/undo/etc. However, is there a guide or reference anywhere that shows where the more "unique" keys on a Mac keyboard are on a Windows keyboard?

One keyboard shortcut I could really use help with right away is the shortcut to immediately put your monitors to sleep. All the Google results say the MacOS keyboard shortcut is Control + Shift + Power. What is the power button on a Mac keyboard? And is there an equivalent on a Windows keyboard? Or does this shortcut refer to the actual physical button on the back of the CPU? If the button on the CPU, that seems like a wholly inconvenient keyboard shortcut!

DropShare-like Mac app that works with Google Drive

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 10:48 PM PST

I'm looking for an alternative to DropShare that works with Google Drive (only). I once purchased an app called OneShot which works well with DropBox but it has been removed from AppStore.

All I need is to quickly upload a file to my Google Drive and share the link with someone. Any app recommendation for that?

Issues with internet access after logging in via Captive Portal (Catalina)

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:50 PM PST

I've seen a lot of posts about Catalina not showing the Captive Portal for public/work/school WiFi networks.

However, my issue is with internet access after I log in to the CP. Everyone else in my school's office can log in and access the internet without issue. But when I log in, the CP tells me my username password are correct but then cannot load the next page which says 'Success' (this final page means internet access is good).

Anyone else having this issue? There are other teachers using a Mac in the office but they're running Mojave. They're not having this problem.

If I want to install Catalina from USB drive, do I need to do log out of iCloud before starting my installation?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 01:58 AM PST

I have two concerns about installing Catalina from a USB (fresh install):

    1. Deauthorizing iTunes
    2. Find my Mac

Do I need to perform these operations before fresh installing Catalina? Additionally, is there anything else that I should log out of or remove before performing fresh installation?

    Thanks!

Tutorial: Manage Libvirt Using Vagrant-Libvirt on macOS

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 01:06 AM PST

I've written a tutorial on how to get vagrant-libvirt running on macOS to manage remote libvirt based virtualization hosts using Vagrant running on my Mac. It's mostly based on work done in an issue over at the vagrant-libvirt repository.

Maybe someone will find it as useful as I have. :) Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Broke right side of screen. Anyway to shift active desktop area over or change resolution to a specific size?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:32 PM PST

so like 1/12th of my mac screen is blacked out towards the right. I would like to shift everything on my mac, desktop and all to the left. I want to treat this dead area as if it doesn't even exist. Is there any way I can just shift the active screen area over to not include this dead space that I can't see?

Sorry if I'm not explaining perfectly it's a hard thing to explain.

    Email issues

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:54 PM PST

I've been using an iMac and my iPhone XR, both on the current OS, to access my email.

This past week, I've noticed some emails arrive on my phone but not on my Mac. It happens every few emails.

Another issue has been if I move an email into a specific folder using my iPhone, it hasn't moved into that folder on my Mac.

Has anyone else been having these issues since the new updates?

    Alternatives to Time Machine?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:08 AM PST

    Hello all,

So Time Machine used to be great. Back in the good old days... primarily before APFS became a thing...

Does anyone know of any good alternatives? I just need to back up to a standard usb 3 external hard drive. I suppose I could just copy stuff manually with Truecrypt (if that's still a thing)..

How did Apple block execution of 32 bit code?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:12 AM PST

32/64 bit is a CPU feature, so even if Apple blocks execution of 32 bit programs and removes all 32 bit libraries/system calls apps internally could use 32 bit instructions right? Its not like the kernel analyzes each instruction.

On the other side, Virtual Machines can run 32 bit code anyway, where is the difference?

I'm just curious, I want to know why Wine doesn't work.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 03:17 PM PST

SOOOOOOOOO, my 2012 Mac Pro earlier today decided to do something stupid, I was on OS X Catalina sadly and I kept going into recovery mode. There was no way out, did everything possible. So I EFFIN erased Mac. Anywho after I did that it literally brought me back to mountain lion, now I cant even update it back to Catalina cause it says, this update requires macOS version 10.9 or later but it's not letting me update because iTunes doesn't want to update to 12.4.3 it gives me an error code 102

What is happening to Mac OS? More buggy then ever?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 02:01 PM PST

Especially recently, with last update. I'm rebooting my computer in the middle of work at least daily, usually more. The microphone quits working, SMC reset doesn't fix it.. not detected or recognized hardware until I restore from backup... then sound decides to crash.. fixed upon reboot. AppStore comes up blank and I quitting the app or rebooting doesn't help- spent 15 minutes on google finally finding a solution- close the app on my iPhone. Upon changing iCloud password have to log back in 20 times before it finally cycles through. Randomly mouse stops working.. cursor moves and computer is still running but not responsive until rebooting. And yes, after having it replaced and a couple months of light use I'm having the double keys and random periods, which oddly seems to disappear for a duration upon SMC reset so I've yet to have that replaced.

I have a nearly maxed MacBook Pro 13 2018 with the i7 and lots of ram. Latest Catalina. It seems the 2019 has gotten great regards. This isn't a problem with my specific machine but the software as Apple says it's fine and everything functions- as mentioned a restore to backup works if not a reboot or accessing a feature through my phone.

Some of these bugs are older but it's become a daily hassle since newest update. Some things arent very user friendly, less than it used to be not to mention...

I was in love with Mac OS for most of my computing needs since finally buying a MacBook around 6 months ago. But I feel like the software development is going down hill. I know this isn't just my problem. Maybe the 2019 is designed to work better and any older machines forgotten about. I'm just worried where apple is heading especially because my phone has lots of bugs in the safari app even now... for that much money you'd expect them to release decent updates not so bug ridden.. That used to be one of their selling points, being Apple only has to make the operating system functional on their own machines and not a wide selection of brands and hardware. Does anyone know the dynamics behind their recent trend downwards?

Anyways... hate to come here complaining about Macs and hopefully people aren't offended that I'm saying what needs to be said. But I hope the next update actually is finished when released and it not being the new bugs you notice, but bug fixes. I'm hoping to stay team Apple as it's a shame things are going down hill.

How do I hide recently added items in the new TV app?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:43 AM PST

In the old iTunes, I could just remove items from recently added list without deleting them from the library, but this new TV app doesn't give you that option, only to delete it from the library, which I don't want to do.

I've searched all over looking for a solution before I came here, hoping that there's simply a menu item I've just overlooked. Or maybe there isn't a way to do it (which would really suck), but I had to ask anyway.

What's up with Adobe's continued lack to fully support dark mode?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:38 AM PST

Anyone using Adobe apps in dark mode must notice that the open/save window and other UI aspects don't fully support dark mode. So even though the app has a dark setting, every time you open or save a file you get blasted with a white background.

Today the 2020 update released and there's still no support for this. At this point the Adobe apps are the only apps I use that don't support it.

This isn't a big deal, but at the same time it's puzzling. Does anyone have insight as to why this is? Are Adobe apps just different and this type of update not possible without major redesign? Seems like it would be a simple fix that could have been done shortly after Mojave's launch.
