Activity Monitor says that com.apple.Safari.History is using 11.61 GB of memory.

Just asking because that seems like far too much. It still says this even after I close Safari.

Can't open a program because MacOS Catalina can't scan it for viruses

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 04:01 AM PST

I tried downloading a program from LG called "On Screen Control" to calibrate my external monitor for my MBP. When I tried to unpack the installation file it gave me the Error that it can't scan it for viruses and that I have to contact the developers from the software.

Hotcorners and Show desktop gesture stopped working

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:06 AM PST

Anyone else seeing this problems? Seems to have happened in the last week or so (I haven't been on my laptop much though so can't confirm exact timeline) On 10.15.1 currently. No hot corners work, only some gestures (show desktop is not, mission control is not, app expose is not, switch fullscreen is, notification center is, app expose is.

This is literally laptop breaking for me, it's ingrained so deeply it subconscious trying to use it.

macOS migration: how do I automate it?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 12:08 PM PST

Hi everyone. I'm about to start fresh with a new device and I'd like to automate a few tasks so that I could have the same experience that I have with my current setup migrated to the new device.

Here's exactly what I'm hoping to accomplish and what is that I'm looking for suggestions on how to automate:

    1. Create two separate user profiles: home and work. Ok, that's the easiest part (no any automation required for that), but it's relevant for the rest of the list.
    2. Install the most basic list of software that I need and that is not in AppStore. Examples: Homebrew, Chrome, iTerm2, VS Code among other things.
    3. Install additional lists of software, that are separate: this is work, and this is for home only. If it is possible to keep application to the user's profile directory and not /Applications – even better. So that some apps are system-wide, while some are not. However, that will certainly overcomplicate things for no good reason, I assume. The only point with this is to organize apps, which is not a priority, just an idea.
    4. Import shell profiles for bash, zsh. Import settings for as much apps as possible.
    5. This one could be great only in theory (if at all), but still: Some apps tend to have a system helper. So I'd like to automate unloading such a helper and it's related objects for the apps that I'm using for home when logging off and signing in as work so that I'm not wasting resources for background processes that are certainly not going to be used for many hours. Once signed in back, these helpers will be loaded back.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I'm hoping to use basic and fundamental tools for this, such as shell scripting, some Python maybe, or even powershell or Apple script. Even though I'm not exactly good at any of the above mentioned scripting languages. Homebrew will also expected to be used here.

The idea is prepare the scripts, the payload with lists and data that is exported from apps, and then deploy and run the script(s) through ssh or ARD. I'll probably test that first on some disposable VM in homelab.

    Windows/Linux style window snapping/resizing?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 11:37 AM PST

I'm about to start a job where I'll have to use a Mac instead of Windows or Linux. I've grown really accustomed to window snapping in either OS, where you just drag the window to the side or corner of the screen and it automatically fills that portion of the screen.

I HATE how macOS does it with the whole "drag the maximize button, select grid type, then it moves to the 'fullscreen' virtual desktop thing". I just want to have two windows open, each taking up half my screen, on the regular "desktop" side of macOS and not on their weird maximized-windows-only virtual desktop thing.

Is there a mod or program I can download that mimics this behaviour? A setting maybe? Or do I have to click and drag the corners of windows every time I want something like this?

Is there an app or site that’ll notify me as soon as new releases of macOS are available?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 02:58 PM PST

I compulsively check for updates, I know it's weird but I seem to keep looking. If I could get notified of releases, I could maybe stop checking. Anything like this exist?

Contacts: Add photo from Photos not working

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 02:15 PM PST

I have a bunch of people from my contacts tagged in Photos. If I try to add an image in Contacts by going to the Contacts program > Select contact > Click contact image circle > Choose the large plus sign = "Change profile image" > Click the "Photos" tab (there are the tabs "Standard", "Camera" and "Photos" to choose from), it does not find any photos of that person. It's always just empty.

Using macOS 10.15.1. Not using iCloud Photos.

    Is this a known bug?

I can drag a photo from Photos to Contacts to manually add it, but that's very cumbersome. And the photos should already be connected to the contacts since I have them all tagged in Photos with their respective contact.

    Thanks!

Display mouse clicks during QuickTime screencapture?

I've seen videos with a red ring around the cursor and a yellow circle popping whenever mouse button is clicked. Is this a built in feature or 3rd party app?

Mojave on 16 inch Macbook pro

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:08 PM PST

Is it possible? I didn't realize how many apps I depend on and since most of them are 32 bit....

I know that probably due to missing ktexts, it might be a dead end, I was wondering if someone attempted it with the latest version of Mojave

    Thanks

Photos app stuck “downloading 17 originals” from iCloud since updated to Catalina

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 04:56 AM PST

I updated to the latest version of Catalina about two weeks ago. The photos app then began and completed its new "curation" process which took a couple of days as I have 35,000+ photos and videos.

A couple of videos I took with my iPhone XS prior to updating play fine on my phone, but when I try to play them from Photos on my MacBook, an error pops up saying "the resource is not available, try again later." They are not downloading from iCloud as they should.

Now when I take photos with my iPhone they upload fine to the cloud in full resolution, but only some seem to download in full to my MacBook. I tried turning off "download and keep originals" but the full versions of a few recent photos still won't load, there's only a (!) at the bottom right of the photo, not the loading circle. I took a couple of test photos this morning and the thumbnail appeared in my MacOS Photos app, but the full download is still not happening two hours later.

Has anyone else experienced this or know of a fix? Everything worked fine prior to the update, so clearly Catalina has messed something up with how my MacBook is pulling from iCloud.

Why do my photos in iCloud show up as using storage on my Macbook?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 11:52 AM PST

Running macOS catalina 10.15.1, I have photos in iCloud. I recently (few months ago) enabled iCloud photos on my iPhone. After they finished uploading, the photos were no longer stored on my iPhone, and are now stored on iCloud.

I enabled iCloud photos on my Macbook (so I would be able to quickly find photos taken on my iPhone) just about two weeks ago and am looking through my Macbook storage use now. It states that my photos are using 11GB of disk space on my Macbook, but I have not downloaded them onto my Mac, I only enabled iCloud photos. My photo library that is stored in iCloud photos is 15GB. Why are 11GB of it being stored on my Macbook?

    What am I missing here?

Adding artwork to Catalina TV app

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 11:16 AM PST

As many know there have been issues with getting cover art to load in both the Music and TV app in Catalina.

I've managed to restore my Album art by deleting my music library and re-adding all my music into a fresh library. The same procedure has not fixed the TV app library content though and so I've resorted to manually adding in new 16:9 formatted artwork. Problem is, changing the artwork on a single file takes upwards of half an hour. It's slower than even copying the video file between drives. Anyone else encountering these issues of the app freezing with basic tasks?

    MacOS Photos Options

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 06:27 AM PST

Is there an official setting (or otherwise backdoor way), to force all my iCloud photos to stay in the cloud, yet still be viewable on my computer, without having to go to iCloud.com?

I want to be able to open my photos app, see all my photos there, however not have them downloaded to my computer. When I click on a photo, that single one would download, and I could delete it and send it back to the cloud (kind of like how Apple Music works for individual songs/albums--they are streaming from the cloud, until you click the "download button" next to it).

    Advice for HDD

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 05:54 AM PST

    Hi girls and boys!

My HDD time capsule using a Western Digital Elements Portable 1To is slowy dying.

As I'm looking quickly for a replacement, i'm hesitating between with those 2 models:

1To WD SSD and Seagate Expansion 4 TB.

I already got an enclosure for the SSD and I'll only use my new HDD as a Time Capsule Backup disk.

If you have other suggestions I'm in, as I would prefer not to spend more than 150$CAD.

As well, it's the second Western Digital Elements Portable I got that crashes... I won't buy any other HDD from that range.

    Thanks a lot!
