    My Mac won’t sleep

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 08:46 PM PDT

I recently got an old 2008 MacBook Aluminum Unibody that I found in some old stuff. Using Apple's own updates I was able to bring it up to El Capitan. I wanted to be able to squeeze all I could out of it and I decided to use dosdude1.com's software for updating your MacBook past it's OS cap. After using it for about a month(it was smooth sailing) it didn't go to sleep. I've tried everything I've found on google that said would make it go to sleep and I still haven't gotten it to sleep. Is there anything else I could possible do to make it go to sleep? Is there isn't is there any way that I could go back to El Capitan?

Is there anyway to disable the external display without actually un-plug the HDMI cable?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:32 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Most of time I am happy with my dual displays on my MacBook Pro 13".

However, there are times that I want to use my external display for PS4 (my external display has two HDMI ports so that I can switch between MacBook 2nd display or PS4).

During this time I want EVERYTHING to be displayed on my MacBook Pro only.

Please do not tell me to use mirroring in Displays as it's quite silly.

The MacBook will consume more CPU loading as it needs to do the samething on both displays even I am not using the external one at all.

All I want is the same flexibility external display selections as it in Windows.

I understand macOS doesn't have built-in function like this but I am wondering if there's an app that can achieve the flexible external display selection.

    Thanks in advance.

My Macbook Air 2019 doesn't always wake from sleep

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 10:10 PM PDT

Sometimes it works. Other times clicking the trackpad doesn't work and I have to physically press the power on button. This started happening after Catalina.

Just got a MacBook Pro, what are some of the things I should do first?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 12:34 PM PDT

I've had a 12.9 iPad Pro for the past year and today I saw that Costco has $250 off the Pro and and Air so I kinda impulse bought it.

It's been a long time since I've used a Mac (since 10.5) so any help and tips are appreciated!

(currently own a 2018 iPad Pro, iPhone XS Max and Apple Watch Series 4)

    The problem is that I don't know if the 2018 2,3 ghz MR9Q2LL/A (4ports) or 2019 1,4 ghz MUHN2B/A (2ports) is more suitable .

If you know anything feel free to share it.

    Which MacBook is better?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 12:19 PM PDT

I spend a lot of my time playing some games, browsing the web, and doing work for school. I was wondering whether I should get the 2019 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM but only a dual-core processor, or the base model 2019 MacBook Pro with a quad-core processor, but only 8GB of RAM. I would use my MacBook for light video editing on iMovie and playing games like Roblox.

    Help with scratch?

    Help with scratch?

I recently got a new macbook pro to replace my old one (had it for 7 years). It hasn't even been a month and I got a large scruff / scratch on the surface. Anybody else have this happen? Is it just the space grey finish thats more delicate? I have no idea what caused this as I barely use it outside of my home and haven't dropped it. Adding a photo for reference. Its so frustrating getting that first scratch so early on. If anybody knows how to repair this or make it less noticeable, please let me know!

MacBook Air doesn't charge with 45W adapter but does with 85W adapter

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:19 AM PDT

My 2017 MacBook Air just stopped charging out of the blue and I ran diagnostics and it said there were no problems.

I thought it was the charger's fault and tested it on my friend's laptop and it was working. Then I tried to charge my MBA with the MacBook Pro's 85W charger and it started charging.

The weird thing is, once I let my MBA charge with the 85W charger for a couple of minutes and then try to charge again with the intended 45W charger, it starts charging again!!

Can someone explain to me what may be going on? Thanks

    DNS server

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:40 AM PDT

I found sometimes I could not log onto the internet. Upon troubleshooting, I found the DNS server had different addresses which were preventing the Mac from going on line. I erased the two new addresses, saved, and backed-out and everything started working. When I erased the two new addresses, the three old addresses appeared but grayed out. In reading online I found it was my VPN which was causing the problem.

I found that every time you use the IPVanish Mac app to connect to a VPN server, the automated app changes your DNS settings to use their private DNS servers. This is done so your online activity is kept secure. After you disconnect from IPVanish, the app should reset your DNS settings back to the DNS settings issued by your ISP. But sometimes, your ISP's DNS settings fail to get reset on the Mac, so you have to do it manually from within the IPVanish app or through System Preferences, Network, Advanced, DNS, select the two addresses and delete them. Save and exit. That will fix it.

Should I get the 13” or 15” MacBook Pro? Please help!

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 04:09 AM PDT

What I'll be using it for: College, Internet/Netflix, Homework/Projects, Email, Social media.

I like the big screen of the 15 inch but I also really like the portability of the 13 inch one. Is the 15" difficult to take from one place to another? I'm not sure which I should get, what do you guys think?

    13‑inch MacBook Pro

    • 2.8GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.7GHz
    • 16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
    • 1TB SSD storage

    15-inch MacBook Pro

    • 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
    • 32GB 2400MHz DDR4 memory
    • Radeon Pro 560X with 4GB of GDDR5 memory
    • 512GB SSD storage

Conditions for the Keyboard replacement program ?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 05:40 AM PDT

    Hey,

My 2016 Macbook Pro is having some keyboard issues, the v and h randomly stop typing once a week.

I was thinking about bringing it to an apple store, but I'm afraid i won't be able to reproduce the failing issue once there.

People who had the keyboard replaced, what did the Genius verify/test?

    Thank you !
