| Posted: 22 Oct 2019 02:41 AM PDT I use a BENQ 3501R ultra wide external monitor connected via USB-C to a 2019 MacBook Pro (May 2019) . Netflix plays properly on the retina screen in Safari 13.1 - however when I drag the window over to the external display it goes black immediately. Drag a the window back starts showing video immediately once it even touches the retina screen. Drag a little back over to external display blacks out. Normally I work with my MacBook Pro closed and the Ultra Wide as my main screen. So it happens immediately when in this workflow. If I install another web browser - Brave, Ms Edge Chromium or Firefox - they all play without issue. I tried reaching out to Apple Support but the rep would not really do anything except tell me to reset the SMC. Meanwhile I had reset the PRAM | Erased HDD and reinstalled macOS Catalina freshly | No Apps or 3rd party programs and tested and still same issue existed. Once again Apple Support reps were pointing to my MacBook Pro, any chance there are other users out there with a USB-C connected display that could try this out? | "Other" storage consuming 15 GB of space Posted: 22 Oct 2019 05:12 AM PDT Hey guys, I upgraded to Catalina when the official build was released to the public and since then, about my mac is showing me that 15 GB are being taken up by "other" storage. I tried everything I could think of and could find on the internet to get rid of this storage, but nothing seemed to work. I'm running out of space (128 GB 2017 MacBook Air) and I really need to find a way to get rid of this junk because my school requires me to create a fairly spacious Windows partition on here. My gut tells me I won't mess anything up if I remove it all because these 15 gigs appear separate from the 10.75 GB of system storage. Before upgrading, just FYI, there was zero "other" space. None. For example, when I try to enter into the Security and Privacy in the System Preferences can take more than 20 seconds. Unlock the Mac can take more than 10 seconds (Auth the Log In too) I tried reinstalling the OS, reseting the NVRAM and SMC several times without a solution. I isolated the problem, when I realize a fresh install with a local administrator user, the issue is not present, but if I put my Apple ID in the system, the Auth services begin to be slow. | Posted: 22 Oct 2019 01:33 AM PDT I'm having trouble resetting SMC on my MacBook Pro -- In the past, when I would reset it's SMC, I would hold shift, control, and option, and then press the power button. The light on the charger would change colour, and then change back. But now that I'm doing it again today (the last time I did an SMC reset was before the last time I took this computer to Apple Store for servicing) and the charger light doesn't change, and the computer turns on, and it has never turned on when I did an SMC reset before. And the computer is still behaving badly after booting up, with really laggy keyboard and mouse input. Haven't installed any new software or anything like that. Anyone have any idea what's wrong with it? I could go into the Apple Store on the way home and make them reset it for me, and hopefully I get someone who knows what they're doing and not just some genius who has to read from an instruction book. I know for fact that all SMC resets using this method do not turn the computer on, I've done it tons of times before. If they won't do anything, I guess I could open it myself and unplug the battery and plug it back in, someone who works in AASP told me before that unplugging the battery also resets the SMC. It's just annoying that I can't use a standard screwdriver, and while I do have a toolkit with the right screw head, it's at home, and when I get home I don't feel like doing anything but going to sleep because I get home late. edit: It's the MacBook Pro 2015 15" (MJLT2LL/A) [link] [comments]  | ||

| Internet Sharing macOS Catalina Posted: 22 Oct 2019 02:27 AM PDT Previously, my rMBP 2015 13" 10.14.6, the Internet Sharing via WiFi from Ethernet was doing all good and all devices are connected to the Internet. But now on 10.15 Catalina, suddenly most of device weren't connected to the Internet even tho it is connected to my SSID of Internet Sharing from my mac. On Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet, it shows Internet Service Not Working. While on Xperia X Performance, it just doesn't load anything. However, all of my iphones and PS4 works flawlessly with this Internet Sharing on 10.15. Any possible solutions or methods i can do to solve it? I'm re-considering to roll back to Mojave but I do love Catalina new features. Thx PS : I'm in my university right now, so i couldn't make any changes to the router as its only accessible by the network admin. But i'm pretty sure there was no changes to the router. Is there any built in Mac feature to draw a line to point to, highlight, underscore, to bring attention to whatever is on the screen during presentations. Or do I need to install some apps? | Local music stops playing early? Posted: 22 Oct 2019 04:12 AM PDT Has anyone else been having an issue with songs ending early since upgrading to Catalina? It might be just a coincidence but that's when it first started happening. For example, there is a song that is 3:46 in length and yet the Music app stops playing the song at 3:33. This has happened to at least 4 different songs. I don't use Apple Music, my music is locally stored as mp3s ripped from CDs. If I play the music in VLC, it plays the full song, so it doesn't seem to be an issue with the file. I've already checked to make sure that the checkbox isn't marked to end the song early. I've also tried adding/re-adding the song. The only thing that helps is converting the song to a different bitrate. I noticed that if I use the in-app feature to convert to AAC, the song also cuts off at 3:33. [link] [comments]  | ||

I have an old user message that displays on the login screen from boot and does not match an updated user message on the lock screen from wake, set under Sys Prefs>Security & Privacy. | New to macOS and question about hosts file and safari. Posted: 22 Oct 2019 02:45 AM PDT I have been using a modified hosts file for years to block ads and such along with Firefox and multiple extensions like privacy badger and uBlock Origin. I was able to get just the hosts file to block most ads it seems in safari but YT ads still play. FF blocks them. I would like to use safari on both Mac and phone but want full ad blocking. Anyone know what other urls I can add to block them? On a side note does safari offer extensions like FF, I use multiple privacy focused ones and LastPass as well. Thanks. [link] [comments]  | ||

For the most part I am able to make calls and send text messages without any problems at home with no issues. It is only every so often that I'll get the message that I can't use my iMac or iPad to make calls because my devices are not on the same Wi-Fi network. So far I haven't found a conclusive reason as to what's causing it and resetting the NVRAM and PRAM, or logging out/in in iCloud, hasn't fixed this issue. What is causing this exactly? After that my Wifi takes priority over Wired. In my work I'm connected to the corporate LAN via wire and the Wifi is generally connected to a guest network. After the update the Wifi guest network always takes priority and I can no longer connect to our corporate LAN until I disable wifi. I'lve already been in settings - Network and rearranged the connections in "Set Service order" but to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this? [link] [comments]  | ||
| Help with hiccup setting up external drive as main drive Posted: 21 Oct 2019 08:39 PM PDT Hello there! I am currently running High Sierra (10.13.6) on a mid-2012 macbook pro. I am attempting to use an external hard drive as my main drive and outfit it with Mountain Lion (there are quite a few programs I'm trying to get back to using that are not compatible with High Sierra and while I would like my internal hard drive to be as up to date as possible its becoming a necessity for me to get back to using Mountain Lion in some circumstances). I followed the instructions in this article (https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/macos-external-drive-3659666/) which helped me quite a bit until it actually came to installing mountain lion on the external drive. The steps were roughly as follows:
But when I attempted to follow the instructions to use the installer to install on the external drive I got the error message "This copy of the 'Install OS X' application is too old to be opened on this version of OS X". Supposedly you're supposed to just go through the set-up as normal but choose the external drive... but the example they used was the new Catalina beta so obviously they didn't hit that same issue. | Unable to sync iOS device via wifi on Catalina now Posted: 21 Oct 2019 05:00 PM PDT Since moving to Catalina, it seems there seems to be no way (unless Im missing something) to sync my iPhone over wifi. It works fine via USB-C to Lightning cable, but I want to sync via wifi like I used to be able to on Mojave and iTunes. Ive unchecked the Sync this phone over wifi, disconnected cable, reconnected it, checked that option, disconnected cable, restarted the Macbook, still no luck.
