WatchOS 6.1 on Apple Watch Series 1 - A comprehensive review Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:28 PM PDT TL;DR: I suggest not upgrading if your older watch currently has battery issues. After the initial release of WatchOS 6, I was excited and couldn't wait to get it on my Series 1. The new features looked awesome, and the promised improvements would be just as great. I'm going to start this review off by mentioning not all features are available on the Series 1. In fact, WatchOS 6.1 seems to be a stripped down version in the Series 1, almost like a free trial. A lot of the features I was excited for just aren't there.
Updating my Watch went smoothly. After downloading the update, I just plopped my watch on the charger and it initiated the install, or so I thought. Instead, I was asked to input my watch's password to start. I didn't realize I needed to do this until an hour after putting it on the charger, so do be sure to do so if you have a password on your S1 or S2. After the human error, the update only took about half an hour to install.
Siri seems to have been improved on the Series 1, but only in certain areas. First of all: Siri can't search the web. Any requests to "search the web for X" will return an error message, quoting "Sorry, I can't search the web on Apple Watch." Additionally, Shortcuts are not available, and some app specific requests like "Pause my music" aren't working for me, even though Siri can "Shuffle my library" just fine. When it comes to Siri's response speed, the Series 1 used to slack behind the newer models dramatically. In my testing, Siri in WatchOS 6 is faster than WatchOS 5 with certain commands. Asking Siri to "Tell me a joke" or "Show me pictures of X" returns with a perfectly executed command in seconds, while "Search the App Store for X" and "Launch Calculator" can be slow. Overall, Siri is improved on the Series 1 with relatively faster responses in most cases, and new commands, but isn't feature-packed like her S4 & S5 counterparts.
With the bigger screens, the S4 & S5 introduce more watch faces in WatchOS 6. Unfortunately, the S1 & S2 are in the same boat as the S3, only receiving the Numerals Mono and Numerals Duo faces. Additionally, the Noise Level complication is unavailable on these older watches. While this is disappointing, I have to say, I love the Numerals Duo face. I like combining different bands to make a dual tone band, and the Numerals Duo face allows me to match the face to those bands. I tend to use the X-Large numerals face a lot, so it goes without saying I'm a fan of these new faces.
One of my favorite features in WatchOS 6 is the hourly chimes. I was skeptical if this feature would make it to the Series 1 and 2, and it has! The ability to set the watch to chime a bell or have a bird chirp every 15, 30, or 60 minutes may be useless to most people, but personally, I find it really awesome. Having the option to tap the watch face with two fingers to have Siri read the time aloud brings the AOD of the Series 5 to the Series 1 in a way, allowing me to check the time without raising my wrist.
WatchOS 6 also introduces new apps, such as the Calculator, Voice Memos, Cycle tracking, and Audiobooks. There's not much to say about these. The Calculator is awesome to finally have on my wrist, as well as voice memos. The Now Playing app has to be my favorite, as music controls was a big selling point when I first bought my Watch. These new apps each have their own complications.
My Series 1 doesn't seem to have gotten any faster, if so, it's unnoticeable, but in contrast, it also hasn't gotten slower. Apps are still just as snappy as before, albeit slow in comparison to newer models, and overall processing speed remains about the same. However, with my testing, Syncing between the iPhone and Watch seem to be an issue. Messages won't show up on my Watch (Which seems to just be a WatchOS 6.1 thing across many watches), Contacts don't sync, and recent calls won't load in their respective native apps. While contacts not syncing has been an issue with many watches on older WatchOS releases, I've never seen it fail to sync like this. Alright, the biggest deciding factor: how does the S1's battery last under the new update? I would like to note my battery would previously last at least 24 hours with little to moderate use. With WatchOS 6, An hour after pulling the watch off the charger, I noticed an 8% drop. To be fair, I was expecting less battery as I'd been playing with the watch's new features to ensure my review was accurate. After 5 hours off the charger, with little use, the watch dropped 25%. This means at most, you're looking at 20 hours of battery life, but I'd expect maybe 2/3 of that with average use. If your battery doesn't last all day on WatchOS 5, I would discourage upgrading.
The big question. Should you upgrade? WatchOS 6 brings a lot to the table, and can make your old watch feel like new again. There are some bugs, as with most first releases, but a quick reset or repair will probably fix most of them. Battery life is just a little bit worse (About 3-5 hours less than WatchOS 5.) Of course, your experience may vary from mine. Not all watches are worn down the same. Overall, Siri is faster (sometimes), New faces are introduced, New apps (Noise isn't available on older watches), The watch overall doesn't feel faster or slower, and battery life is reduced, as expected. All of that considered, I would encourage upgrading, but only if you have at least 24 hours of battery life per charge with normal use on WatchOS 5, or if you just really like new stuff. Just expect slightly less battery life. EDIT: I am aware battery can be iffy during the first day or so after updating. I plan to do an update on battery performance 48 hours in. Stay tuned for that! There are a lot of features in WatchOS 6 I didn't cover. This is because WatchOS 6 itself is not new, just new to the Series 1 and Series 2. For more details about the small stuff, I suggest looking at a few YouTube videos. About my setup: Apple Watch Series 1 on WatchOS 6.1 iPhone 7 Plus on iOS 13.2 [link] [comments]
Does anyone else’s watch not “mirror their iPhone? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:04 AM PDT No matter how many times I sync the watch or reset it. It never mirrors my iMessages or texts. If I delete something on my phone it should delete it on my watch and it never does. [link] [comments]
Hairdresser Wife Stands All Day - Often Doesn't Close Stand Rings Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:08 AM PDT It makes her so mad. I think it's because she stands in basically the same place for several hours of the day. She is very active, however, and goes on a 4 to 5 mile walk every morning. Anyone else on their feet most of the day yet come up short with the stand ring? Any tips? [link] [comments]
Is it "OK" to switch between faces to have access to more widgets/complications? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:40 AM PDT Hi!I recently bought an Apple Watch, first time user.I noticed that it's very easy to switch between faces by swiping left and right and there's almost no delay.I was wondering if it's reasonable practice to switch/swipe between faces as much as you need to have access to different complications because, say, all of the complications you want don't "fit" in your main face.Or is this inadvisable for some reason that escapes me? Thank you! EDIT: Language barrier, folks. I think by asking "is it OK" sounded like I'm worried I'd be punished or something. What I meant to ask is whether it's common to use the Apple Watch in such manner and if it there were not any drawbacks. That's all.Apologies. [link] [comments]
6.1 Solves Slow Wake-up time(?) Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:38 PM PDT I am not noticing the annoying 2-5 second delay when I wake my watch from sleep, so far (series 4). Anyone experiencing similar, promising lack of delay? [link] [comments]

I don't get Apple News (AN) in watchOS Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:52 AM PDT I mean, I really don't get it. There's no Apple Watch (AW) settings for Apple News (AN) on either the watch or iPhone, the app itself shows just a few tickers, and, the worst bit, it's absolutely out of sync with my iPhone. It shows me only articles from one site I even don't have on my iPhone. Once a while I get a notification but it seems to be from the iPhone. Now, to Apple's defence, I was changing AppleIDs - I have two, one in UK, another in a country where there is no "proper" AN yet (I do have some feeds though on my iPhone), and now it's jut one AID. So maybe the AN are choked after the change. Are your AN on AW working fine? If you say so, maybe I need to re-pair my AW as there's no settings for separate Apple IDs for iCloud and App Store... Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:04 AM PDT Hi, I'd like to be able to either use Siri to dictate a short note and have it send automatically to my Trello board. Unfortunately, Shortcuts is not currently working in WatchOS, so that's a no go. Ive tried Drafts, Things, and Brill to make this happen, but could not. Drafts 5 does not support Trello actions as of now. Does anyone know of a solution where I can tap a complication on a watch face and have it automatically record, transcribe, and send to an email or integrate with Trello? [link] [comments]
Which app do you use for face? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:58 AM PDT Any good app with a cool selection? Not one when you need to build it all from scratch but maybe the option to just choose a background pic? [link] [comments]
Mega battery drain and background usage on series 5 Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:17 AM PDT Hi guys. Bought a series 5 on release day and every other day it's dead after 7-8 hours with no usage. I took it off charge 10 hours ago, went to bed, woke up and it has 15% left and 8 hours usage time. Theatre mode and do not disturb were on while I was asleep. Any idea what the hell is causing this? It's so unreliable as I use it for medical reasons. Background app refresh is off so nothing should be used in the background. It's driving me mad and apple store won't refund. Been like this on intermittent days since purchase. [link] [comments]

Stand Hors not updating after watchOS 6 on Series 3 Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:06 AM PDT Hello, Day before yesterday, I upgraded my iPhone from 8 Plus to XS Max, also I updated watchOS from 5 to 6 on my Series 3 watch same day. I restored my watch backup. But post upgrading, its not updating "Stand Hours Ring" though it is counting & showing "Stand Minutes" on iPhone. While now I could see two Apple Watches for all Activities in Data & Sources (one which recorded all activities on 8 Plus i.e before upgrading to Xs Max and second Watch (the same watch) post upgrade). While it is tracking all other activities like Calorie burn, Flights climbed but not showing Stand hours; I have to restart my Watch every hour & then only after few mins walk it normally shows/increments the stand hour count. Let me know if anyone has solution on it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:05 AM PDT I have an Apple Watch series 2 on watchOS 6.1 and I can't install any apps from the watch app on my iPhone (8, 13.2), it just keeps spinning. When I try to download from the App Store it asks me to log in with my Apple ID from the watch app, but it already is. If I go to the bottom of the App Store in the account section it says that there's no account. Is there an App Store account section that I don't see in the watch app? Or how can I log into my Apple ID if my watch is already linked to my watch and my account? [link] [comments]

What’s the best series (and maybe case?) for a ‘labor intensive’ job? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 09:07 PM PDT I have a refurbished series 1 that I bought about a year and a half ago after much skepticism and fell in love w it. I've raved about it to my dad, sparking an interest in him. He really wants one, mostly for his work, but would never spend that much money on himself. So I decided I want to get him one for Christmas. However I wanted input on the best one for him. I just work in an office and go to the gym, so my watch is pretty safe and perfect for me. He works around water and chemicals all day, so it would need to be one that can get wet. He needs to record times so I was considering the series 5 since the screen stays on. Can it handle getting splashed and maybe him sticking his arm that it is on in a tank for a bit? Scratches will probably be inevitable, but whatever could handle them best. He also has to be on call while not at work, so if any of them have better speakers than the other, incase he isn't right by his phone when it rings? [link] [comments]
